With a verdict returned in the Oscar Grant BART shooting trial we now wait for the other shoe to drop. This piece has a pretty decent photo essay of Oakland's preparation of for any civil disturbance that may occur. (http://pajamasmedia.com/zombie/2010/07/08/leftist-groups-plan-a-riot-as-oakland-boards-up-downtown/) Local news is reporting that Oakland is shutting down. (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Oakland-Shuts-Down-as-Protesters-Gather-98075524.html) There is a Justice for Oscar Grant rally at 1800 PST, for which a group calling itself By Any Means Necessary has RSVP'd. As I write this it's 1750. It might be a long night in the Bay Area.

Interesting twist on Social Networking Media - used in Iran against the current regime.

About three weeks ago, a Twitter account called "oaklandriots" mysteriously popped up and quickly built a following of several hundred users. The page's design featured a policeman in riot gear, and the content of account -- news stories about potential violence following the trial -- suggested that the creator was ready to rumble.

Bizarre.

OAKLAND - An active investigation into a late-night gunbattle on Interstate 580 between a lone man and California Highway Patrol officers has forced a hard closure between several exits early Sunday, authorities said.

The driver, identified only as a 45-year-old white male with a listed address in Groveland in Tuolumne County, wore body armor and carried at least one handgun and several rifles. The man was shot several times and was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospita...

Change the color of his skin and he could almost be a profile for "generic street mujihadin'.

One quote made me chuckle a little (although somebody in body armor engaging in a protracted gunbattle with police is no reason to chuckle)

"This was a very aggressive person," Morgan said. "He shot at officers on a freeway that was opened to the public. Clearly his intentions were less than honorable."

How, exactly, would one proclaim honorable intentions during a gunbattle with police?

"Pardon me, officer. Perhaps we could best pursue this with a duel of pistols at noon? Twelve paces, I say, should be sufficient."

The guy had targets (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/21/MNMN1EHB37.DTL)in mind - good on the CHP.

Perhaps he doesn't fit the "generic street mujahidin" profile, but he does seem of a certain type (http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/19096134/detail.html).
