US Diplomat and envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke has died this evening, days after undergoing emergency surgery for a tear in his aorta.

Before his role in the Obama Administration, Holbrooke was known as one of the key negotiators of the Dayton Accords in 1995 which ended the Bosnian War in the former Yugoslavia, and as one of the contributors to the Pentagon Papers before that particular event.

This morning BBC Radio 4's Today programme had an interview, I think with John Negroponte, who added to my knowledge, that Richard H. played a crucial part in accommodating 144,000 'boat people' each year in the USA. Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9284000/9284627.stm

His role in the peace in Bosnia is subject of a wider debate; forty years of diplomatic service means ups and downs. RIP.
