I found this story on a link on a Russian news agency from a report about the Russian Navy making its first visit to Cuba since 1991.

Foretellers: Russia will dominate the world

"Recently, Russia pulled off a hat trick: hockey, football and Eurovision. The country was ecstatic and there was jubilation in the air. The press was obsessed about it, and still are. Among all the chaos I read the following comment on the Internet: When the Northern Empire wins on Ice and Grass and its Clown sings his song, Red Clouds will cover the Sky and the Apocalypse will come. This grim prophecy was said to have been one of the Bulgarian prophetess Vanga's predictions, and that made me think about Russia's future. Sear*ching for some evidence to substantiate the claim, I found out the passage was a harmless joke. Still, there are lots of prophecies about Russia that make people sit up and pay attention.

Vanga was born at the turn of the 20th century and died 12 years ago at the age of 84. Her gift of prophesy made her popular, and soon politicians visited her to have their fortunes told.

Among her most shocking predictions is what she had predicted in 1980: In August of 1999 or 2000, Kursk will be covered with water and the whole world will be weeping over it. Twenty years later, the nuclear submarine "Kursk" perished in an accident.

...

One of the popular predictions about Russia is that when the permafrost thaws and the floods come, nothing will survive on Earth but Russia. The climate will change and Russia will occupy the best inhabitable zone. Plus, Russia is predicted to herald in world peace and flourish in the face of good fortune.

Vanga also once said: "Everything melts away like ice yet the glory of Vladimir, the glory of Russia are the only things that will remain. Russia will not only survive, it will dominate the world."

Russia is on a roll with assorted victories. Whether we can believe that Russia will initiate world peace, however, remains to be seen. "

Not really sure what to make of it, but I thought I might throw it out for consideration.

The progression of Russia definitely warrants observation. Nearly a year ago FRONTLINE chronicled how Putin planned to stay in power, and how serious opposition was disqualified http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/russia703/. This is a problem that should not and can not be ignored. While the issues facing America are great, Russia requires serious and frank discussion.

Does kinda have a Goebbels/Nostradamus feel to it.

But don't worry, the Russians are our friends. After they convinced Kyrgyzstan to close Manas for $2 Billion in loans they agreed to allow us to ship in non-military supplies across their territory as long as we give them a list of everything that is in the shipments. I wonder if they will require us to buy all our fuel from them. I am sure they wouldn't dare to cut the transportation link for some perceived violation of the agreement or cut off the fuel ala natural gas to Ukraine when it suits them.

On Saturday March 1st, the Russian Parliament approved the use of armed forces in the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine,[1] marking the first possible major Russian military operation since the 2008 invasion of Georgia. In the 2008 Russo-Georgian war, Russia demonstrated the capacity to conduct joint kinetic and cyber operations in pursuit of its political and military objectives.[2] Now, there is evidence that Russia is pursing similar tactics in Crimea.

It's called "Snake" and it's being compared to another alleged state-run virus, Stuxnet. And yes, all evidence points to Russia.

According to British-based BAE systems, dozens of computer networks have been infected with the virus, which sometimes goes by the name Ouroboros (named after the serpent in Greek mythology). It works by giving remote attackers "full remote access to the compromised system." It has stealth qualities, including the ability to stay inactive for a number of days.

Russian Web Brigade?

"The web brigades(Russian: Веб-бригады )[1] are alleged astroturfing groups linked to the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation. They are purported to be teams of commentators that participate in political blogs and Internet forums to promote disinformation and prevent free discussions of undesirable subjects"

Having read my fair share of articles there is a surprising amount of much-'liked' comments on quite prominent newspapers which seem to come straight out of the Kremlin, with a free use of 'Nazi', 'fascists' and so forth. In some occasions other posters commented that the writer stucking to the Kremlin line had only joined very recently and devoted all of his posts to the Ukrainian crisis. I don't doubt that there is a fair number of guys working out of their own initiative but if we consider that the Kremlin has also payed Russian 'tourists', 'self-defense' forces, and funded anti-Western protesters it seems very unlikely that we don't see much of the same in Cyberspace.

Exactly this need to pay for most of the supporting actions is a quite striking difference to the vastly bottom-up nature of the Ukrainian maidan movement. Then again this has been the general political problem, as I have mentioned before, for Putin relative to the West, especially in regard to eastern European countries. The European attraction is a massive, vastly natural headwind for Russia in this struggle. It has to work very hard, with all sorts of clever actions, just to not lose ground.

Fascinating writeup from last year that's oh-so-timely today, considering the source is RIA Novosti.

WASHINGTON, June 26 (by Karin Zeitvogel for RIA Novosti) – The Kremlin has practiced a homegrown technique called disinformation for centuries, including using it to slander the United States, fan the flames of anti-Semitism and convince “much of the world” that US government was behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy 50 years ago, a new book by former Romanian spy chief Ion Mihai Pacepa says.

“Disinformation: Former Spy Chief Reveals Secret Strategies for Undermining Freedom, Attacking Religion, and Promoting Terrorism,” also alleges that seeds of “Russian-born disinformation” were sown in the United States during the 2008 presidential campaign of then senator Barack Obama, although they haven’t reached the same level of sophistication as in the Kremlin, which has been practicing disinformation since tsarist days.

Irony of faith. RIA Novosti promotes the book about themselves :)

By a decree of USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev, “On the Establishment of the Information Agency Novosti,” the Information Agency Novosti (IAN) succeeded APN on July 27, 1990. “To provide information support for the USSR’s state domestic and foreign policies and proceeding from the interests of the democratization of the mass media,” the Novosti Press Agency was renamed the Information Agency Novosti (IAN).

Cited material in the original post of the thread:

They were never all that good at; much of their stuff was pretty crude. The Americans were marginally better. Of course it was (and is) also fashionable for ideologues of all points on the compass to denounce reportage or opinions they dislike as "disinformation".

Dayuhan:

The definition of disinformation that is used in the book isn't what you were commenting on. You're comment, and my initial response, had more to do with misinformation. The word as it is defined in the book is something that would be done by agents of influence I believe.

But words do get transmogrified in use.

What kind of culture modern day Russia is cultivating? Is this narrative ok to west? They have cultivated the victim story since 1991. They have will to get revanche. Should west help Russia to aquire (feeding state buget) enough capacities achieve revanhce?

1. You may call it Paternalistic Consumerism. Ask Westerners if it's OK to them.
2. Bravo Sierra. There is a story of "golden age lost due to the sins of fathers", victimness is marginal in our culture, left to a bunch of crack-pot conspiracy theorists and orthodox nuts. Mirhond, this is not off topic. Audience must understand what makes Putin tick, what makes Russians tick, how Putin's Politburo makes Russians tick etc. 300 journalists got awards from Putin due to their actions in Crimea campaign. About what they were preaching? Смерть фашистким оккупантам = death to fascist occupants? Minus word occupant. Where they borrowed it? Didn't Stalin bring it to the masses in the beginning of Great Patriotic War, when slogan "workers of the world, unite" exhausted itself? Under the workers slogan Soviet Russia tried to overthrow goverments in neighbouring countries. "Death to fascist occupants" is very deep in Russians' psychology and using this bottom drives them to war mode. Today is very popular in Russia ribbon of Saint George.

So, mirhond, all those variations are buttons in the toolbox of Kremlin spin doctors.

Ps how many attempts have been made in Russia to write one history text book during last 8 years to enforce one official line? Why the attemps have failed? Why Russians are proud of Great Patriotic War that started in summer 1941, but try not to talk about period between summer 1939 till summer 1941?

2 links and questions in Russian about st George ribbon. Fascist have ribbon? No problem, historians are trying to built up story that makes this episode irrelevant. I'm waiting the moment when they present logical narrative. So far "Death to fascists!"

mirhond, you are not moderator here, so don't give orders :)

There was zero arguments in your post.

Russian propaganda avows that the ribbon — known as the St. George ribbon in Russia — symbolizes the Soviet Union's "Great Victory" in World War II. Yet, the connection between President Vladimir Putin and "Putinism" to that victory remains unclear, especially because the St. George ribbon first gained use as a propaganda tool as recently as May 9, 2005. That was when the pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi had college students and school children hand out a huge amount of the ribbons to passers-by in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II. That initiative set off an unexpected wave of patriotism across the country: Russians everywhere tied the ribbons to their jackets, cars and apartment balconies, and this fervor continued for a full year after the anniversary had passed. Those ribbons made headlines for a second time following the rigged State Duma elections in 2011, which sparked a series of mass anti-Putin demonstrations in Moscow. For whatever reason, the protesters wore white ribbons as the symbol for their movement. This prompted Kremlin spin doctors to come up with the brilliant idea of using the St. George ribbons to oppose the white ribbon. They organized counter-demonstrations by bussing in thousands of state employees from all over and tying a St. George ribbon on the arm of each. Then Putin himself made an appearance wearing a St. George ribbon at one such rally on Red Square. The message was clear: bad, unpatriotic people wear white ribbons but good people wear St. George ribbons in memory of those killed in war.

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/the-black-and-orange-ribbon-of-putins-army/498194.html

You know who are "Nashi" and who gave orders them. You know why Nashi was organised. This way we drift back to Ukraine topic. 2004. Kremlin started their own fight against orange revolution threat in Russia, due to their failure to bring to power Yanukovich. Brigadir was Surkov, who is after short pause back in Kremlin and coordinates politics in CIS. He created also "Rodina" and Rogozin to control nationalists. Rogozin just arrived from Transnistria with collection of signatures to join Russia. Surkov's team managed internal policy, but didn't hesitate to take action in neighbours yards. Etc, etc, etc. You know this better than me and there is no reason to continue.
This was "Nashi" ideology under directions of Putin's administration. This is the narrative that state sponsored talking heads are telling.

mirhond---since you are working for the FSB take the common courtesy to answer direct questions placed to you but as you yourself know from my responses to you----You are the FSB and get paid for every response you submit to this board and you cannot answer anything anyway until you ask their permission.

If you have any questions from the FSB for us simply ask them at least we will take the time to get an answer back to you---a direct exchange with the FSB/GRU might just improve the relations between the US and Russia.

Nice to see you using US slang since--- when you started writing here you barely could write an coherent sentence in English---at least your handlers will be happy that your English has improved to the point that at least you could visit New York City and not be recognized as a funky Russian tourist from St. Petersburg having a hard time speaking the word "where' without a Russian accent.

Really mirhond--just how much do you get paid per blog entry?

Here is an interesting question you specifically failed to answer me when it as asked a number of times---is Putin a "good" or "bad" Hitler.

Also since when have all Russians residing in the Russian Federation started loving fascists?-- especially yourself since it was you who compared Putin to Hitler on this board.

mirhond---and your great reluctance to admit openly that you work for the FSB explains a lot about yourself---by the way just how many "Russian fascists" have been sent to the Ukraine in order to "fight the Ukrainian fascists" who Putin complains about them "burning" Russians.

Although from the videos being shown on the Odessa fire---several fires were started in the upper floors where the "Ukrainian fascists" were no where to be seen. How do you explain that and do not state it is off topic.

mirhond---Outlaw did not stop---have been quietly watching your activities here on this board with interest and tracking you as well on several other US/UK boards.

You absolutely do in fact work for the FSB and get paid for your entries which often make no sense, your English spelling is poor to really sometimes very bad---then when directly challenged you get angry and suddenly the language abilities get far better and you never answered any of my "off topic" questions and you do the same thing on the other boards.

When you were identified it was nice that you continued as it has made a great study on mis/dis information activities being currently run by the FSB/GRU.

mirhond --Keep the comments coming as it adds to the study and gives one a better understanding of your handlers.

You really have a big problem when you are directly challenged on your own beliefs and you really have a problem in not understanding your own Russian history although you claim to be a "Russian".

A number of your answers would indicate though that you are in fact a "Russian fascist" just as is Putin but at least Putin admits to having been a KGB COL in Dresden.

In his 1997 article “Fascism – Borderless and Red”, Dugin exclaimed the arrival of a “genuine, true, radically revolutionary and consistent, fascist fascism” in Russia. He believes that it was "by no means the racist and chauvinist aspects of National Socialism that determined the nature of its ideology. The excesses of this ideology in Germany are a matter exclusively of the Germans, ...while Russian fascism is a combination of natural national conservatism with a passionate desire for true changes."[10] "Waffen-SS and especially the scientific sector of this organization, Ahnenerbe," was "an intellectual oasis in the framework of the National Socialist regime", according to him.[10]

Close call, but no. Mussolini-style Russia. If you ever read Umberto Eco's essay "Eternal Fascism" (I doubt it) you'd rather came to this conclusion. Current Russian official ideology is very eclectic but it also misses several important traits to be considered Fascism.
Jonah Goldberg in his "Liberal Fascism" wrote that Mussolini had very simple political program - seize power and stay in power as long as possible. From this point of view you may call current Russian political elite facsists - but all the nuts you've mentioned in above list (which itself begs a question "What a heck it is? What Communists have in common with Orthodox?) are just powerless political clowns.

New Ukrainean nationalists have the same goal as their glorious predecessors had - powerful and independent state. ... No doubt they all follow the one rule - "Everything which empowers your State is good, everything which weakens it is bad"...

Wow, you happened to know a lot about me, why do you still bother asking me directly?
1. I don't use Tor or anonymizers, I use Firefox, if you were real IT specialist you'd find it out in no time, along with my IP, but you are not, so your wild guess is OK.
2. You have no supernatural power to make me answer, do you even realise it? :D
3. Please, have a little common courtesy and create a topic I suggested before, you know I can't resist answering your offtopic ravings with loads of offtopic from myself.

mirhond---thanks for confirming the so called use of "Firefox" which is not true as is much of what you think you are intelligently writing.

By the way an IP address does not reflect browser use-and as you know IP addresses are passé these days in the world of cyber security since you fully understand the Dark Side of the internet--- they mean absolutely nothing to us as it is the hops you have taken and from where you started that is highly interesting--and by the way your IP address constantly changes each time you come onto the other commercial Western media boards which reflects definitely Tor usage.

But since you are not using Tor which you claim you are not then you might want to "look" at updating your "Firefox" as the IP address is indicating changes with every logon at those sites --- but again you know yourself you are on Tor so I do not need to tell you that.

Keep responding as it only adds to the depth that we have on you and the other four and will go into a interesting article we are putting together on Russian dis/misinformation techniques and how they are used with Western media based on five selected western commercial media sites.

By the way I noticed you did not deny you were on other sites as well--it is those sites that interest us the most as you seem to be working with four distinct other individuals who definitely are using Tor on those sites.

The amount of your responses here on what you have written in the last several weeks reflects a sad state of understanding even the country you claim to be from as I noticed many of your comments/photos actually could have come out of the fascist corner of six "nationalist" Russia websites. Actually several of your past photos come from one specific Russian "nationalist" website---it actually helped us link you to those sites.

Thanks again for the response ---you have my comments so there is no further need to respond to you.

As we are actually as I said far more interested in your responses on the five other commercial media sites where you seem to have improved both your English, writing style, and are heavily proRussian separatist/heavily supportive of Putin in your comments.

If this thread is still up when we publish the article in about four weeks---will let you know the source of the article so you can check out the results and pass it on to the other four writers and your handlers. It is not every day one gets a chance to have a professional rating of your writing/computer skill sets provided for free.

Enjoy Tor as you seem to not fully understand both the power of it and it's inherent weaknesses especially when navigating the internet dark web.

Dynamic IP addresses are standard in Germany and some other countries. Almost everyone here has a dynamic IP address unless one wants to run a private server.

I am also allowed to use a proxy service of an institution nearby in order to access what they have a license to access - and that's no Tor at all.

"definitely" was an exaggeration.

Then you definitely do not understand how one can even track a dynamic IP to it's originating server as all servers using DHCP have a range assigned to each server which can is often changed depending on what the administrator wants to use from his capacity and one wonders just how easy the NSA has it these days.

So if you used your institute next door one can identify first then the server/switch/router and from there it is a simple step to you. And then from DHCP range to the next DHCP server range and on and on---simple it is---what is hard is to grasp just how easy it is which your comment reflects. Once one has the server then it is easy to build the subnets, switches and routers that the server is tied to down to the single end user---come on why do cyber techs get paid so much or at least mine cost that much?

Guessing as well from you comment that you have not been issued a VPN logon in order to connect to the world and I doubt seriously if the institute server is running on a VPN based on your comments so in fact you "see" the internet and it "sees" you.

Once one has the server the world is open to anyone.

And you fully and definitely do not understand then how Tor works as you would have not made the mention of DHCP which Tor negates with each hop it takes---THIS is what I was referring to---yes we knew the servers being used and their DHCP ranges during the backtrack and none of the IP addresses matched the ranges under that particular server which we by the way double checked with the server owner every step of the backtrack who were also interested in the use of Tor against their servers---THAT is the indicator of a hacker underway using Tor ---but why do I mention it when everyone one on the thread is a IP specialist.

Stan --you all have been led around by the nose by a very efficient FSB paid hack and one does not care and you took the time to even engage---and how much of a bio does the individual have on everyone using this thread as well as emails addresses which is a great first step?

And you are from what ---the intel world as one should always understand a tidbit leads to another?

For those that find there is no intel just keep a running check daily on this site and hold on to your credit cards.

Excellent suggestion, Stan.

And so what has one learned from the over 1500 inputs;

1. the Ukraine and Russia exists as countries
2. there are problems between the two
3. no one can say here what the Russians are up to

Actually kaur has provided some of the best input to three points above but almost no one outside of mirhond seemed to get it that is why mirhond was trying to drive him off the thread if one paid attention to a couple of mirhonds kaur focused comments but which no one seemed to be interested in.

Yes you are right the thread is just a repeat of ongoing news and that is even late---again kaur has it right but again no one picked up on it---especially the nationalist fascism.

Hate to say it---one can get far more running info than this thread if one uses Interfax and kyivpost as I have seen really not a single detailed analysis of anything outside of comments from firn and kaur.

OUTLAW 09
05-15-2014, 09:45 AM
Stan---let's check the veracity of your previous comments;

1. What was mirhond's response to the single word Tor---go back and check the response and in my current world not many on this thread would even recognize the logo that is displayed on the lap top that Snowdon carries with him nor would many if not most on this thread know that there are a few other such tools not widely available to the common man that sit behind Tor---but mirhond knew as he gave the generic IT name for them which by the way is not commonly used outside of some circles.

Secondly, Tor if truly secure uses PGP between end users in the background---something that mirhond should have pushed back on because PGP cannot work when blogging --he did what--- he shoved Firefox to the forefront-a sidestep answer as he always does.

2. You complain that the thread does not contribute---here is another question-- What phase of the Russian New-Generation Warfare is mirhond supporting and how does it tie into the current political warfare being carried out by Russia against the Ukraine and for that matter eventually against Estonia and the rest of the Baltics if Russia decides to stay under the NATO Article Five definition for action threshold? Did notice that Estonia is trying to quickly make some changes for their Russian minorities in the last week or so to avoid the effects of the New-Generation Warfare.

3. By the way the "bearded Cossack" that some enjoyed here as clearly identified by kaur was involved (seen leading the RPG attacks) in the recent ambush of the Ukrainian airborne convoy with the 8 KIAs.

But again all indicators not firm but you know indicators.

So again comments about IT/mirhond might need to be rethought if you really read the eight phases of the Russian New-Generation Warfare doctrine which is now playing out in the Ukraine but again that might not be an appropriate topic for this thread your and other commenters comments as it seemed to have been missed by this thread but not by the Lativan Security Council which published the document.

Update: I have given up. It is impossible to seperate out the posts, they are spread over a month amidst four hundred posts.

Recommend renaming this Russian Cyber Operations since it will cover much more than Ukraine. Just let the thread build naturally. There is enough out there.

Added: Title slightly different now Russian Cyber & Info Ops (Ukraine & more). Sunday breakfast renewed my energy and a small number of recent posts on the Ukraine thread have been moved here.

If this is actually the case, it raises an interesting point about what we call "info ops". No matter how sophisticated the technology and how widespread the network, the effectiveness of the effort ultimately comes down to the quality, not the quantity: if the people behind the computers are inept and the arguments crude and unpersuasive, the effort will be counterproductive.

Anyone who's vaguely familiar with social media marketing knows that masses of "likes" and supporting comments don't necessarily mean you're selling the product.

Just based on observation, the Russian mantras are certainly being spread out there, but I doubt that they are gaining much traction outside those already converted to the cause. There will be some support from the reflexive anti-West crowd and from a few trogdolytes who are inspired by Putin's homophobia and cardboard "he-man" stereotype persona... but are they really selling the product to anyone who hasn't already bought it?

If mirhond is FSB - and I have no way of knowing who's a paid provocateur and who's an ideologue with a computer and too much time to kill - that could tell us something. Maybe SWC's limited readership only rates the C team, but if that's an indication of the quality they come up with, it's hard to see much of a threat there.

This piece (http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/kiselyov-defends-tv-network-after-caucasus-footage-labeled-as-ukraine/500475.html) is about Putin's propaganda from the Moscow Times.

The deputy chief of a pro-Kremlin television holding has dismissed as an "accidental error" his network's use of footage from a gunfight in the North Caucasus to illustrate supposed recent anti-Russian violence in eastern Ukraine, a news report said.

The footage — first used in a Rossiya television report in 2012 about a clash between government troops and militants in the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria — resurfaced again on the network's prime-time Vesti program last week, this time as part of a report about supposed atrocities against pro-Russian civilians in Ukraine.

....

Since the start of the Ukrainian conflict, media analysts have accused state-run television of falsifying their reports to put a pro-Kremlin spin on their coverage.

"This is how they work: Re-label militants as resistance fighters, Kabardino-Balkaria as Slovyansk, and head over to the Kremlin to collect their medals and orders," opposition leader Boris Nemtsov said Monday in his blog on the Ekho Moskvy website.

Kiselyov said the latest fallacy may have been a result of a "computer error" or a mistake by the "young nymphs in video editing," Slon.ru reported.

He did not offer an explanation for how an editing or computer glitch may have led the Vesti correspondent to comment on the specific details of the footage, such as weapons lying near the dead body.

More importantly, the Russians access to non-state information gets increasingly difficult (http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/the-incredible-shrinking-runet/500423.html), making them easier targets for the Kremlin-backed or even owned propaganda channels.

The Kremlin's Trolls Go West
By Ilya KlishinMay. 21 2014

According to the analysis, many of the pro-Putin messages have been posted by Russian expats in Germany, India and Thailand. Hackers from Anonymous, a vigilante activist network, hacked the e-mail account of one "trolling" group that is charged with running the campaign in the U.S. and gave me some of the information they discovered.

The organizers of this campaign likely studied the demographic structure of the main social networks in the U.S., the online behavior of its citizens, relevant hashtags on Twitter and groups supporting U.S. President Barack Obama.

Russia's "Internet trolling squad" made detailed studies of the such sites as The Blaze, The Huffington Post and Fox News, including their audiences, owners, official and actual editorial policies as well as their attitudes toward Russia and Obama. Screenshots show comments posted in English with serious grammatical errors.

A great number of false accounts will be created for the strategically important Huffington Post website. Hacked letters showed that "up to 100 accounts will be registered and promoted" to achieve the optimum result from the site's complex system that gives "top billing" to comments posted by users with the highest number of subscribers.

The Diffusion of Kremlin Media Values

Putin’s revanchism brings with it some distressing byproducts, one of which is the projection of illiberal Kremlin media values beyond Russia’s borders. Crimea is a case in point. In the short period since its annexation, the peninsula’s media have been subdued and integrated into the repressive Russian information space. The relative media pluralism Crimeans had enjoyed until recently is gone, replaced by a Russian standard that effectively limits alternative viewpoints.

The dismantling of Crimea’s media was achieved swiftly. Days in advance of the rigged March 16 referendum on annexation, Ukrainian television broadcasts were silenced and replaced by programming from Moscow. The first order of business for Russian-backed forces in Crimea was to cut off sources of information beyond the control of the Kremlin. The crackdown on mass media was accompanied by fierce repression of local activists, bloggers, and others who voiced opinions contrary to the Kremlin line, according to a report written by Ivan Šimonović, the UN assistant secretary general for human rights. In the end, officials in Crimea reported that 97 percent of referendum voters supported secession from Ukraine and annexation by Russia. In the aftermath of Russia’s takeover, most Crimeans now get their news from Russian television and the government-run local broadcaster. These stations tend to follow Moscow’s version of events in Ukraine, describing the government in Kyiv as illegitimate, warning of instability across the country, and generally seeking to discredit any Kremlin opponents.

The same type of propaganda invasion that coincided with the physical invasion of Crimea has been on view in eastern Ukraine. As pro-Russian forces extend their hold, Kremlin media values take root there, too, with coercive tactics used on independent journalists and dissidents in ways that are common in Russia, but had been rare in Ukraine. Just this week, separatists in several eastern cities have disrupted local rebroadcasts of Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, in some cases replacing them with Russian or pro-Russian content. Reporters from various outlets have been threatened, attacked, or arbitrarily detained.

In addition to Ukraine, Russia’s state television influences other neighboring states with significant Russian-speaking populations. As the Kremlin’s ability to project media power has strengthened over time, the authorities in countries on Russia’s periphery have been forced to contend with increasingly provocative and destabilizing messaging. Moscow’s well-funded media complex simply outguns local Russophone alternatives in places like Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and the Baltic states.

Russia's Propaganda War Will Backfire
By Mark Lawrence SchradMay. 28 2014

This "backfire effect" does not bode well for a quick resolution to the instability in Donetsk.
Of course, even if the Ukrainian situation stabilizes after the election, recent events will lead to many long-term political ramifications. Yet the Kremlin's instrumental use of state-run media to whip-up a militant furor for its own ends — both at home and in Ukraine — may be one of the longest-lasting implications precisely because it has cut the deepest.

Even though the labels of "Nazis," "fascists" and "Banderites" may gradually be replaced by more traditional homages to the eternal kinship of Russians and Ukrainians, the memory of this Russian vitriol will endure, especially when Ukrainians can easily revisit these narratives, enshrined in the eternal media archive that is the internet.

Future historians may one day write about how in 2014 Russia gained Crimea but lost Ukraine. The Kremlin's media war will play a large part in that story.

kaur posted this link and one should really look intently at the video for a number of reasons---the most important one is the use of the word "fascist" notice the old man telling a "Chechen" fighter to "kill all the fascists" take no one alive.

https://news.vice.com/video/bullets-not-ballots-in-donetsk-russian-roulette-dispatch-42

Now go back and refer to virtually all press releases out of Russian news agencies ie TASS, Interfax and RAI and then Russian tv/radio and then internationally RT and Raptly (for video footage) and count the use of the single word or groups of words using the term "fascist".

One would have a count that goes into literally thousands of times and that is actually significant in the world of propaganda. There is an old language learning rule---repeat the word seven times and it will stick in your head---the same goes for propaganda.

The ethnic Russian/Russian speaking population of the east/south Ukraine has been so "radicalized" via the words "fascists, Nazi's, radical nationalists, junta, coup" etc. that there is currently no way the Kiev government can get into a meaningful dialogue as demanded by Russia with the two areas.

If one had the link that I posted on the Ukraine discussion which was removed by SWJ one would have seen a number of cell photos on his cell taken by a dead "Chechen" fighter which clearly identified him as a member of a known fanatical Putin supporting Chechen "nationalist" grouping that has been brutal in Chechnya and in Western terms would in fact be defined as "fascist" and actually if one Wikipedias' the term "Russian fascism" the group would even be defined under Russian terms as "fascist".

What was striking in the photos was the use of the unit's Chechen logo and the Russian 4X4s in the parking garage carrying Russian plates and their carrying of the AK105 only issued to Russian GRU/SF types.

When one discusses information warfare then refer to the eight phases of the new Russian UW strategy call new generation warfare and see exactly what emphasis they place on it.

When one now sees how this "Chechen" group has formally taken over control on the ground now in the Donetsk one might in fact state the east has been lost as it is now Putin's favored "nationalist" group in full control in the Donbas---the criminals and locals have been pushed to the side and the Chechens are in full control---ie the Crimea all over it just took more time and yet the Ukraine thread does not see that shift as mirhond the FSB commenter has kept the responses going in an interesting direction and totally away from that shift by his comments which are interesting to watch.

There was a recent statement by a Russian media type who stated we "won the military war in Georgia but lost the "information war"---this time we are "winning handedly" and the West has truly lost.

This statement says it all.

Then on the SWJ Ukraine thread we get a taste of the information warfare and for some reason we commenters seem to turn a blind eye-interesting is it not that when we use the term "fascist" we in the West define and react differently to it and run from it instead of "fully understanding just how it is used"?

Instead we should be debating and commenting on how exactly this word "fascist" has become the central messaging of the Russian information war under their new UW strategy and it has been working brilliantly based on Western actions or rather inactions.

Does it "appear" that he is not just a "war tourist" but actually potentially a member of a paramilitary organization that evidently is "allowed" to exist in Russia ie Chechnya.

If there is any doubt as to where Russia stands in the eastern/southern Ukraine--this article should suffice to confirm Russian actual involvement on the ground there. THEN understand the relationship to the cell photos and the article below-significant.

Since some on the various SWJ threads take offense at the term "fascism" or "fascist" especially those say in Russia---here is an interesting article from 2010 by the Moscow Times a relatively middle of the road media website.

If one then looks at how Russia uses the term "fascist" against the Ukraine--we inherently truly need to understand how it both "exists" and is "used" by Putin, the FSB and the GRU in furthering their new UW strategy especially how it is applied to the Ukraine and potentially the Baltics and Poland.

In it's use in propaganda it is a strong "radicalizer". In it's use on the ground it is a potent irregular military force to be reckoned with.

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/putins-fascism-lite/427504.html

This article from 2012 makes several interesting comments by a Russia is in fact either close too and or already in a "fascism state of being".

So just how does Russia level the charge of fascism against the Ukraine propaganda wise but ignores itself and has no fear that the same propaganda will not be leveled against them at some point---is worth a doctoral thesis in political science.

Alexander Dugin has been more popular talking head during Putin's last term. In Ukraine theater he is also involved. So called "Donetsk republic" embassy was located in his youth movement office in Moscow. His team started cooperation with Donetsk republik cadre some good time ago. SBU intercepted his call to Republics activist's, who was under arrest, wife. I don't count all the TV shows where Dugin was present.

In 1991-1992, Dugin wrote his programmatic article “The Great War of the Continents,” in which he claimed that the representatives of this order could be found in the Abwehr, the Third Reich's counter-intelligence service, and especially in the Sicherheitsdienst, the security service of the SS. Dugin called its chief Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942, an organizer of the Holocaust) a “convinced Eurasianist,” who, allegedly, fell victim to an intrigue by the “Atlanticists.”

Recently, Dugin has adapted his own rhetoric to mainstream Russian discourse and now often presents himself as a “radical centrist” or even ardent “anti-fascist.” One might add though that, as late as 2006, he praised in public the German ultra-nationalist brothers Otto and Gregor Strasser who had helped Hitler build up the NSDAP in the 1920s (before they left the Nazi party because of a personal conflict with the Führer, in the early 1930s). In March 2008, Dugin's website Evrazia.org confirmed “Dugin's sympathies for the Strasser [brothers].”

What is interesting is that of the 34 dead Russians that were sent back to Russia 18 were identified as Chechen from their IDs and photos on cell phones.

There are evidently another 32 Russian bodies still unrecovered near the airport.

But the Chechen irregular leader is arguing only "14" were known to have gone--BUT it was "on their own as they were not told to go"---although one of those killed in a video interview just prior to his death "claimed" he had been called and asked to go and he went.

Putin and the media campaigners are now shifting gears in order to try to get some kind of conversation going with the West in order "to get back to normal" as their economy is suffering and their currency is still taking a major hit.

One sees this theme now on multiple media outlets in a number of different but almost same wording.

Notice how Russian uses the loose term anti constitutional---the Russians never have accepted that the elected Ukrainian Parliament once learning that their President had fled the Ukraine in a super majority to include even the Party of Regions which he was part of ---overwhelming voted to kick him out---sounds like democracy at work and is fully under Ukrainian law "constitutional" especially since the Parliament before the kick out vote changed the Ukrainian constitution back to the one from 2004 which was a Parliament focused Constitution.

But since Putin and co have declared the government illegal, junta, Right Sector, neo nationalists and Nazi's it is hard to change infowar directions if one wants to start a dialogue on one's own terms.

Interfax from today:
10:04 Putin: West has to admit anti-constitutional coup in Ukraine

By placing this infowar statement into play Russian is trying to grasp the straw of hey since the West had a coup so we were "legal" in taking the Crimea.

See the West are the bad guys we the Russians are the good "legal" guys-all designed especially for internal consummation and the attempt to split the West leadership.

kaur---moderators closed the thread because of my disputes with mirhond which if the moderators have noticed has not moved to another SWJ thread as he was anyway part of the infowar efforts by the Russians. Somehow they took offense at me calling mirhond a Russian fascist and apparently they did not understand just how the term Russian fascist is even defined in Russia nor how the Russian themselves use the term.

The video is critical--- as you know the Cossack was initially being seen by you and myself and yet mirhond tried to sidestep his beard photo being seen back in 2008.

The war has shifted and you are right ---shifted now to a irregular guerrilla war with Russia flowing weapons and irregulars into the Ukraine daily.

Russia prides itself in protecting it's borders but somehow cannot "see" KAMAZs painted in Russian military green in convoys of 10 or more?

The video does in fact counter the Russian infowar statements being carried daily by Interfax and TASS and Putin in his French TV interview yesterday---he "claimed" no Russian military/security forces in the Ukraine---notice he did not say a word about Russian citizen "irregulars" carrying Russian passports with Russian exit border stamps in their passports.

This is being reported in the last several hours ago out of the Ukraine---so much for Russian Interfax/TASS/Putin statements that they are not "assisting" the irregulars as one attack is coming from the Russian border crossing point itself.

"The border crossing “Marinivka” is attacked from two sides. Fierce battle continues"

This Russian infowar campaign is in direct support to their new UW strategy called New Generation Warfare and you are right one would think it is important enough to fully understand as we will be seeing more of it in the coming years.

kaur--

Russian inforwar bloggers are not only limited to say the Ukraine or here at SWJ.

Some of us troll the underground dark sites for corporate security reasons and troll for sites selling stolen credit cads by the thousands.

There is one US internet security type who has a great reputation for "lifting the vale" of these dark sites and often writes articles about them together with screen shots of what he finds.

He gets "greetings from Russia" comments on specific articles written in the same style of poor English as we witnessed from mirhond.

Then when other commenters who track his articles similar to SWJ come in with their somewhat direct comments he backs out of the discussion much as mirhond did---same technique, Russian in nature, poor English, attempted disruption of blog site.

Sound familiar?

Example:
His user name below---

dump me if you can Goodfellas

violating a ridiculous number of McDonald’s trademarks . Zzz you so funny Brian , like a funny guy from Coming to America .They have golden archers but we have golden gates, they have Big Mac but we have Big Muc .

i wonder how many laws did you violate Brian ?? i can name at list 10 right now . Do you want to hear them ??

i give you heads up
handling of stolen goods is one of them

Many of the infowar comments are driven by paid Russian bloggers and there has been some comments that some of the Russian gangs are jumping in as money flows for this type of work.

Just a side comment---some of these dark internet stolen card sites are extremely exclusive, with only a direct personal invite to log in and in Russian.

As the fighting it heavy in east Ukraine and more and more actual media reports of Russia citizens fighting in the Ukraine are coming out with photos and physical interviews this particular Interfax release went into play yesterday.

It has been "mentioned" three previous times over the last five weeks, but did not take off in the global media so I think they are trying it again.

Following the motto the US has sent private contractors to the Ukraine so it is OK for Russian citizens to be "helping" fellow Russians.

Notice how it was lanced just prior to Putin arriving in France.

Just a link to the BBC article titled Russian propaganda machine 'worse than Soviet Union' (http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27713847).

Cultural historian and publisher Irina Prokhorova goes further - she calls it "Stalinist", reminiscent of the anti-Western hysteria which marked the grim repressive years of the late 1940s.

And what worries the liberal intelligentsia is that the aggressive tone is being directed inwards as well.

Ever since President Putin warned he would not tolerate a fifth column of national traitors in his historic speech on Crimea's annexation in March, Russia's beleaguered opposition has felt under siege.

Many of the victims of this 'Stalinist' propaganda war are indeed ethnic Russian in Russia speaking Russian and many will still pay a heavy price for Putin's war. A good deal doesn't realize it so far, drunken by Putin's propaganda poision.

The useful idiots and partly payed Putinfans in the West won't have to pay a similar price, thanks to Western law and democracy. An excellent program (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/documentaries/2010/07/100624_doc_useful_idiots_lenin.shtml) by the BBC does a fine job at exploring the history of the term 'useful idiot' and the idiots behind it.

The phrase 'useful idiots', supposedly Lenin’s, refers to Westerners duped into saying good things about bad regimes.

In political jargon it was used to describe Soviet sympathisers in Western countries and the attitude of the Soviet government towards them.

Useful idiots, in a broader sense, refers to Western journalists, travellers and intellectuals who gave their blessing – often with evangelistic fervour – to tyrannies and tyrants, thereby convincing politicians and public that utopias rather than Belsens thrived.

Keep in mind that some of the 'idiots' and others get of course handsomely payed by the Kremlin to spread it's propaganda like Alexander Rahr (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Rahr). He worked first for American institutions, perhaps the pay (and the honey) was better on the other side...

Putins Trolle (http://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/propaganda-aus-russland-putins-trolle-1.1997470) by the German Sueddeutsche is propably one of the best researched articles on that aspect of Russian cyber operations. The details of the various modi operandi based partly on internal material are interesting if expected.

The planning and analysis phases seem to be pretty business-like. Overall that line of media manipulation is easily outsourced and the keyboard soldiers are cheap, quickly trained and replaceable. If one considers the miniscule budget and the great manipulation return on that investment I expect that in the future we will see much more of that stuff even if major social networks and media harden themselves considerably.

One must love the double tongued language Interfax and the Russian FM uses especially the word fascist.

09:14 Moscow outraged by fascist provocations against Russian embassy in Kyiv

There where no more that 300 individuals protesting the shoot down of an Ukrainian aircraft with a Russian MANPAD killing 49 so I guess protesting the killing of Ukrainian military personnel is now considered being "fascist".

But somehow "Moscow" overlooks the Russian MANPAD as well as the three T64s, and one BM21 that had it "somehow" let through the FSB "secured" Russian/Ukrainian border.

Assume "secured" as Interfax had released a formal statement attributed to Putin who gave guidance to the FSB and Russian Border Security Command to seal the border.

What is equally impressive is the lack of push back by Western media to the fake and often misleading reporting as one would think it kind of gives bad press to them when they carry fake reporting---they do not seem to mind being apparently used.

Yes we see on occasions an article by say the BBC or the German media but has anyone heard any comments in the open public by a leading western political type and or national leader ie say Merkel or Obama?

Window on Eurasia: In Ukraine, Putin is Carrying Out ‘Biggest Information Special Op’ in Modern Times, Eidman Says

After the Maidan, he continues, “the situation of Russian-speaking citizens” of Ukraine “did not change. “’The ‘uprising’ in the Donbas occurred not as a result of a deteriorating of the situation, but just the reverse, the situation became catastrophic as a result of this ‘uprising.’” People have done what they have done only because they were deceived and misled.

They were “consciously led to a state of mass psychosis. The irrational fear and hatred of the Russian speakers to the new Ukrainian authorities was intentionally provoked with the help of a brainwashing campaign, the dissemination of panic rumors, and the work of Russian media and political technologists.”

No one threatened Donetsk or Luhansk, least of all Kyiv, until the revolt forced the Ukrainian army to intervene. “The population [of the two oblasts] did not need a war” and it has not brought them anything but suffering. “But there are forces interested in provoking the conflict and using the population of these regions for their own selfish interests.”

These include the Putin regime which has used the crisis to boost its domestic standing, “part of the eastern Ukrainian oligarchy and political elite” who lost their positions when Yanukovich fled, and “Russian nationalists, ‘imperialists,’ ‘Cossack,’ Orthodox clericals, national socialists who form the greater part of volunteers from Russia.”

Not one of these three groups needs the residents of Donetsk or Luhansk except as tools for their own purposes, but they collectively and not the people of the two Ukrainian oblasts are fanning the fires of war. If they ceased to do so, the conflict would end. In the meantime, one can only hope that the people there and elsewhere will learn to “oppose Russian disinformation.”

Indeed, indeed.

Ukrainian Church Faces Obscure Pro-Russia Revolt in Its Own Ranks (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/22/world/europe/ukrainian-church-faces-obscure-pro-russia-revolt-in-its-own-ranks.html?_r=0)

LVIV, Ukraine — In a zealously nationalist region of Ukraine that clamors to join Europe and bubbles with suspicion toward Russia, Father Andriy, a preacher at Our Lady of Everlasting Succor church, was defiantly out of step with the mood of his flock.

The European Union, he explained after a Sunday service, is an “empire of evil” committed to defying the word of God and to spreading homosexuality and pedophilia. As for antigovernment protesters who toppled President Viktor F. Yanukovych and are praised as heroes in this western corner of Ukraine, the priest sees only “Godless deviants” and “fools” who are “in the pay of hostile foreign powers.”

Such views, espoused by a small but noisy group of fundamentalist Catholic clerics in western Ukraine, are commonplace among the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church and its Ukrainian affiliate, whose Moscow-based patriarch is a firm ally of President Vladimir V. Putin.

It was founded by the Czech national Dohnal accused of having served as a Soviet intelligence mole called 'Tonek' and can dispose of a surprising amount of money and wealth relative to it's tiny size.

Obviously such news is an easy target for sarcasm, sadly after the Russian network of men and money in Europe has been increasingly revealed it is difficult to rule such things out.

Such an investment by the Kremlin requires relative little capital and can cause considerable confusion and outsized influence.

Putin, highlighting shameless liars, bitterly calls Goebbels a ‘talented man’
Russian leader thanks international gathering of rabbis for communities’ fight against ‘Nazi revival’

July 10, 2014

A Kremlin transcript of Putin’s address at the meeting did not specify where he saw Nazism being revived.

In the past, Putin has called the leaders of the revolution that toppled the regime of Ukrainian former president Viktor Yanukovych “Nazis” and “neo-Nazis,” and cited what he said was their anti-Semitism to justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine since March, when it annexed Crimea from its western neighbor.

Many Ukrainian Jewish leaders and the country’s government have dismissed these assertions, saying that the claims about anti-Semitism are being made for political purposes.

Russia and the Menace of Unreality
How Vladimir Putin is revolutionizing information warfare
PETER POMERANTSEVSEP 9 2014

“If previous authoritarian regimes were three parts violence and one part propaganda,” argues Igor Yakovenko, a professor of journalism at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, “this one is virtually all propaganda and relatively little violence. Putin only needs to make a few arrests—and then amplify the message through his total control of television.”

The point of this new propaganda is not to persuade anyone, but to keep the viewer hooked and distracted—to disrupt Western narratives rather than provide a counternarrative. It is the perfect genre for conspiracy theories, which are all over Russian TV. When the Kremlin and its affiliated media outlets spat out outlandish stories about the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine in July—reports that characterized the crash as everything from an assault by Ukrainian fighter jets following U.S. instructions, to an attempted NATO attack on Putin’s private jet—they were trying not so much to convince viewers of any one version of events, but rather to leave them confused, paranoid, and passive—living in a Kremlin-controlled virtual reality that can no longer be mediated or debated by any appeal to ‘truth.’

Like its domestic equivalents, RT also focuses on conspiracy theories—from 9/11 truthers to the hidden Zionist hand in Syria’s civil war. Western critics often snigger at these claims, but the coverage has a receptive audience. In a recent paper, “The Conspiratorial Mindset in the Age of Transition,” which examined conspiracy theories in France, Hungary, and Slovakia, a team of researchers from leading European think tanks reported that supporters of far-right parties tend to be more likely than supporters of other parties to believe in conspiracies. And right-wing nationalist parties, which are often allied ideologically and financially with the Kremlin, are rising. In Hungary, Jobbik is now the second-largest political party. In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Front recently won 25 percent of the vote in elections for the European parliament.

A reliable source of the Polish friends [Polish intelligence], an American entrepreneur and owner of a number of firms closely connected to the petroleum circles of the South, reported in late November that the real instigators of this criminal deed were three leading oil magnates from the South of the USA -- Richardson, Murchison and Hunt, all owners of major petroleum reserves in the southern states who have long been connected to pro-fascist and racist organizations in the South.

Deja vu rhetoric in Hungary and Ukraine almost 60 years later?

ON EACH OF the three occasions when the Red Army intervened to restore pro-Soviet orthodoxy in a wayward Communist state-Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia in 1968, Afghanistan in 1979-the KGB played a prominent part in what was euphemistically termed the process of "normalization." When the Hungarian uprising began in October 1956 with mass demonstrations calling for free elections and the withdrawal of Soviet troops, the KGB chairman, General Ivan Aleksandrovich Serov, flew to Budapest to take personal charge of KGB operations. At an emergency meeting of security and police officers in the interior ministry, Serov denounced their reluctance to fire on the demonstrators: "The fascists and imperialists are bringing out their shock troops into the streets of Budapest, and yet there are still comrades in your country's armed forces who hesitate to use arms!" Sandor Kopacsi, the Budapest chief of police, who was soon to side with the freedom fighters, replied scornfully:

Evidently the comrade adviser from Moscow has not yet had time to inform himself of the situation in our country. We need to tell him that these are not "fascists" or other "imperialists" who are organizing the demonstration; they come from the universities, the handpicked sons and daughters of peasants and workers, the fine flower of our country's intelligentsia which is demanding its rights…7

Like Eastern Europe 1960. and Bolotnaja protest meeting in Moscow 2012 and Arab spring, color revolutions in CIS?

Though it was not until after the Prague Spring of 1968 that the Red Army intervened again to enforce Soviet ideological orthodoxy, Moscow showed growing anxiety during the 1960s at increasing Western influence within the Soviet Bloc. The KGB reported that the West was engaged in wide-ranging "subversive activity in the political and ideological sphere against the socialist countries… seeking to persuade the population of the superiority of the Western way of life." The "subversion" took many forms: broadcasting, propagandist publications, information distributed by Western embassies, East-West cultural and scientific exchanges, tourism and letterwriting. In the Centre's view, Western radio stations such as the BBC World Service and Radio Liberty threatened to cause "immense harm" by broadcasting propaganda designed to weaken the fraternal ties between the Soviet Union and the socialist states of eastern Europe.10 What most worried the KGB was that "the broadcasts were popular with the intelligentsia and young people."

"The West's subversive activities," complained one KGB report, were "harming the cause of Socialist construction" throughout the Soviet Bloc, encouraging nationalist tendencies in the states of eastern Europe and damaging their ties with the Soviet Union. The greatest harm was being done among the intelligentsia and young people. The KGB noted "an unhealthy tendency" among writers towards "ideological co-existence" with the West and a growing belief that literature was no business of the Party. Students showed a worrying tendency to set up independent non-Party organizations for "free discussion on the model of English clubs." One undated KGB report picked out two subversive texts currently attracting "growing interest:" The New Class by the heretical Yugoslav Communist Milovan Djilas, and the works of the late nineteenth-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.14

It is easy to see why Djilas's devastating expose of the Soviet (Russian? by kaur)system as a co-optive oligarchy run by a privileged Party (United Russia party? by kaur)nomenklatura should have been seen as so subversive. In 1963 the twenty-year-old Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky was sent to psychiatric hospital for possessing a copy of it. Even for KGB officers The New Class was seen as a potentially dangerous text. When General Oleg Kalugin finally read the book in the KGB library in 1981, twenty-four years after its publication in the West, he found himself secretly agreeing with it.15 Why Nietzsche should have been mentioned in the same breath as Djilas is more puzzling. His call for a "revaluation of all values" so that the life force of the strongest should not be hampered by the weak, though bearing some relation to the actual practice of Stalinism, was ideological anathema. But the works of Nietzsche, unlike those of Djilas, were scarcely likely to subvert the youth of the Soviet Bloc. The author of the KGB report probably knew no more about the great German philosopher than that he was a well-known enemy of Marxism.

Homefront seems to be under control by Kremlin.

Most Russians believe that the country's state-run news agencies have provided objective coverage of the events unfolding during the Ukraine conflict, a poll by the Levada Center revealed Wednesday.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents to the poll, conducted between Oct. 24 and 27, said they disagreed with the notion often expressed by Western critics that Russian media is distorting the facts on the Ukraine crisis.

Another 13 percent of respondents said they agreed with the statement that Russia is conducting an information war against Ukraine — but that it is justified. Eleven percent said Russian media was guilty of biased media reporting and that it was "harmful and dangerous."

Most respondents also said they noticed an information war being waged against Russia as a result of the conflict, with 54 percent of respondents citing Ukraine as the ringleader of the information war and 55 percent the U.S.

Influencing international audience needs additional effort.

Russia is rapidly expanding its global propaganda empire, and while some of its mouth pieces and media outlets are broadly recognized as closely tied to or owned by the Kremlin, others continue to escape the world’s attention, passing themselves off as independent projects. In the most recent major example, on November 10, the director of the Kremlin-backed international media corporation RT (formerly Russia Today), Dmitry Kisilev, announced the launch of a new “brand” connected to the RT parent company—a gigantic news agency to be named “Sputnik” (Vedomosti, November 10). According to Kisilev, the project includes a main website, Sputniknews.com, with more than 800 hours of daily programming in 30 languages, covering over 130 cities in 34 countries. Kisilev says these numbers will increase in 2015 by 30 new “multimedia hubs,” each hosting radio stations, news bureaus, press-centers and employing 30 to 70 staffers. And in addition to the three languages RT itself already broadcasts in—English, Spanish and Arabic—on December 1, the media outlet plans to launch a Chinese-language service as well. It is noteworthy that the online IP address for Sputniknews.com points to Moscow’s Federal State Unitary Enterprise Russian Agency of International Information (ip-tracker.org, accessed November 12)—the official name of the large, state-owned Russian news agency RIA Novosti, which is set for liquidation this year.

The Interpreter and the Institute of Modern Russia present a special report by Peter Pomerantsev, author of Nothing is True and Everything is Possible: the Surreal Heart of the New Russia, and our editor-in-chief, Michael Weiss, on the Kremlin’s weaponization of information, culture and money to achieve foreign policy goals and undermine opponents.

In recent years, the Kremlin has made much use of information warfare, gaining support in the West from nostalgic communist fellow travelers, the rising far-right and conspiracy theorists. The rebranding today of the international branches of Russia’s state-owned Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) news group as Sputnik International speaks of the Kremlin’s intent to influence and manipulate opinion abroad. Russian state-owned or state-controlled media also serve to distribute disinformation, including outright lies, as best exemplified by fabricated reports of the crucifixion of a child by Ukrainian forces.

The Kremlin has also utilized cultural campaigns, exploiting religious sympathies amongst both fellow Orthodox populations, and religious conservatives in Europe and the USA, who align themselves with Putin’s message of traditional values and homophobia.

To speed up this process, the Kremlin has unleashed a carefully crafted and skillfully executed communications campaign to sway public opinion in key Western countries. Audiences around the world, but specifically in Europe, are being hit hard by a combination of internationally targeted propaganda and a locally fine-tuned communications support effort.

I received my first personal taste of this when I was targeted by the Kremlin’s now-famous army of online trolls last week. I had been invited to discuss the West’s relationship with Russia on one of Germany’s prominent political talk shows. A day before the live broadcast, the show’s lineup was announced on Twitter, and within minutes, the smear campaign started.

Scores of unknown and mostly unidentifiable people heaped scorn on me, mostly on my own Twitter account, about 50 of them within the first two hours alone. It was enormously flattering, but it was also creepy and disturbing.

I am not the first person to experience such a barrage, of course. But to me, this episode demonstrated several things.

Of course, I have heard about some prohibitive trends in our media. But I personally do not see any real prohibitive trends. According to western experts, western media is creating some parallel reality when covering the events in Ukraine,” Putin said, adding that western media outlets were just fulfilling a political order received from their respective governments.
“Perhaps, we have something like this in separate areas. Is it good or bad? If you ask me, it’s bad,” Putin told the ombudsmen.
If the press wants people to believe it, then it should give an objective and extensive coverage of events. “Naturally, everybody has to comment (on events) but in that case, authors should make it clear that it’s their personal point of view,” Putin concluded.

Yesterday Russia launched a intensive info war set of reports--one was an "alleged" meeting between the Commander of the UA forces fighting at the Donetsk airport and a Russian mercenary Motorola----within several hours western social media was openly questioning the video of the meeting--meeting was played up big time in the Russian TV media back in Russia.

Appears that the "meeting" was a well staged fake.

The second major Russian TV reporting and was carried to a degree in western media was the reported movement of three major Russian troop/mercenary convoys south towards Mariupol.

Again western social media was able to verify all three convoys were the same convoy just filmed differently to give the impression of three.

BLOG: Russians film and publish their own large columns on the move in Ukraine... http://ukraineatwar.blogspot.nl/2014/12

Don Cossack? spotted in 'to mariupol' video. So it is not filmed by locals. Thus seems orchestrated/planned video... pic.twitter.com/FIMeTSHLLa

Same truck spotted in the two 'huge' columns 'to Mariupol' So there is definitely overlap/same convoy. pic.twitter.com/lT4dxbiEWf

UPDATE: All 'to Mariupol'-videos are filming parts of the SAME convoy http://ukraineatwar.blogspot.nl/2014/12/russians-film-their-own-large-columns.html … pic.twitter.com/YIDwFqbbgS

Then today a photo shows up on the net depicting Ukrainian Army troops standing next to proRussian troops during a big mercenary/Russian troop parade celebrating Russian Independence which is being researched by Fotoforenscis to see if it was photoshopped.

Seems as if Russia is determined to depict themselves in their Russian media for their own population as getting to a "normal situation of peace" in eastern Ukraine as the target population of all three seemed to be the Russian population in general.

Article on Russian GRU Informational Psyops---

Agencies of the informational-psychological operations (IPSYOPS) of the GRU of the General Staff and the Russian Federal Security Service [FSB] were tasked to carry out a large-scale information campaign to disrupt or substantially obstruct preparations for the 4th round of mobilization in Ukraine.

The operation is planned in conjunction with the structures of the “information war” of the Russian-terrorist forces, created in the occupied areas of Donbas by GRU experts of the RF General Staff.

The main purpose of the operation is to disrupt or ultimately hinder the mobilization [in Ukraine] through a large-scale disinformation campaign, thereby preventing the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations to increase the number of operating reserves, or to significantly slow down and complicate the process.

The Ukrainian reservists and their family members are the designated target groups and objects of this campaign. The task – is to create a negative context around the ongoing so-called anti-terrorist operation (the unbearable living conditions of Ukrainian soldiers in the ATO zone; a representation of the ATO forces as “cannon fodder;” the presentation of terrorism in Donbas as a “national liberation movement,” etc.).

During the operation, there are plans to make extensive use of the formation of “properly
structured public opinion on social networks” with the assistance of video and audio materials and various “eyewitness statements.” In addition, IPSYOPS agencies in Russia and Donbas are tasked with establishing “a direct or indirect impact” on the audience through some Ukrainian mass media to create so-called “secondary credibility,” primarily through the publication of “credible materials for investigative journalism.”

At least two organizational and administrative meetings took place to discuss the coordination of activies under this operation by the Russian IPSYOPS agencies and the relevant institutions created on the occupied territory of Donbas.

I have often mentioned here at SWJ that the real cause of Putin annexations of Crimea and eastern Ukraine are all tied to the democratic movement the "Maidan" because the Ukrainian governance and corruption model is and was so close to the Russian model and Putin's fear of the same thing happening in Moscow--and he basically has a deep fear of the word "democracy".

In an "alleged" fraud trial a Putin opposition leader is being charged with 10 years and it is a fake trial--a demo date and place cropped up on the net and since then the Russian government is making every attempt to stop it---but as the net is a living organism the net resistance is growing and the US companies Twitter and FB are being openly accused of supporting a dictatorship---maybe because of the large amounts of Russian investments in to them?

Outlaw09,

Good catch that Examiner link, as I'd just found an excerpt from the latest Adam Curtis documentary. Adam works for the BBC and makes excellent, thoughtful documentaries and the excerpt is on:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcy8uLjRHPM&app=desktop

It starts in Russia and Putin's young adviser. In a few words information is presented to the public that is confusing and uncertain - so there is no coherent narrative. The full documentary will be available from January 25th, on BBC IPlayer, meantime there is a lengthy summary:http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/adamcurtis/posts/TRAILER-TRASH

The summary starts with:
Politicians used to have the confidence to tell us stories that made sense of the chaos of world events. But now there are no big stories and politicians react randomly to every new crisis - leaving us bewildered and disorientated.
And journalism - that used to tell a grand, unfurling narrative - now also just relays disjointed and often wildly contradictory fragments of information.
Events come and go like waves of a fever. We - and the journalists - live in a state of continual delirium, constantly waiting for the next news event to loom out of the fog - and then disappear again, unexplained.
And the formats - in news and documentaries - have become so rigid and repetitive that the audiences never really look at them.
In the face of this people retreat from journalism and politics. They turn away into their own worlds, and the stories they and their friends tell each other.
I think this is wrong, sad, and bad for democracy - because it means the politicians become more and more unaccountable.

The Netherlands is funding a study on how the EU can fight back against Russia’s “information war”, in one of several counter-propaganda initiatives.
The Dutch-sponsored study was launched in January by the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), a Brussels-based foundation.

Alastair Rabagliati, the EED’s director of operations, told EUobserver: “We’ve launched an initiative, with the support of a Dutch government grant, which will develop a feasibility study with clear recommendations on the way forward for the development of independent Russian language media initiatives”.

“It’ll aim to consolidate different free media and enable new actors in the Russian language info-sphere - TV, social media, internet portals - in order to optimise co-operation".

EU sources say the grant is worth about €500,000 and the initial report is due before a summit of former Soviet and EU states in Riga in May.

Since August 2014 I have seen numerous European information/disinformation articles written by both fake and real writers BUT one written by an American surprises me greatly as he seems to have completely missed the entire social media which has been covering the Russian invasion inch by inch with videos, photos and open source analysis.

This author seems to want to imply that all of the above has not been done and it the fault of the West that Russian invasion troops are actively fighting in the Donbas.

Strange to see this type of article from an American although reuters has been involved in carrying articles that later proved to be false.

Opinion: Perhaps you missed it: We’re at war with Russia

But nobody has explained what our vital interest is in Ukraine

By
Chris
Martenson
Reuters

Secretary of State John Kerry has accused Russia of providing heavy arms to Ukrainian separatists, but has offered no proof.

The U.S. has been waging economic, financial, trade, and political war against Russia and even kinetic war-by-proxy in Ukraine. Worryingly, nobody in power in the U.S. or Europe really seems willing to tell us exactly why.

From the Russian point of view, everything from their plunging ruble to bitter sanctions to the falling price of oil are the fault of the U.S., either directly or indirectly. Whether that is fair or not is irrelevant; that’s the view of the Russians right now. So no surprise, it doesn’t dispose them towards goodwill negotiations with the West generally, and the U.S. specifically.

Recently the anti-Russian stance in the U.S. press has quieted down, presumably because the political leadership has moved its attention on to other things, and that means Russia is largely out of the U.S. news cycle. However, there’s plenty of serious action going on in Russia and Ukraine, as well as related activity in the U.S. that deserves our careful attention.

The U.S. (via John Kerry) and NATO have steadily accused Russia of having funneled hundreds of tanks, armored personnel carriers and other heavy equipment to the separatists in eastern Ukraine.

These assertions bring to mind the Sherlock Holmes case of the dog that did not bark where the absence of a piece of evidence leads us to a very different conclusion than the one the U.S. political establishment would like us to believe.

The sorts of weaponry that NATO and the U.S. have charged Russia with providing are virtually impossible to conceal from the air. Snapping high-resolution photos of such war machinery is child’s play for today’s military satellites, and even civilian ones too. If the assertions were true, we should have seen a flood of photographs of Russian heavy equipment every step of the way as it passed into Ukraine.

But none have been offered, not even one so far. And the simplest explanation for this is that none exist. If they did, you can be 100% certain they’d have been released and replayed over and over again on CNN until everybody and their uncle could distinguish a T-72 tank outline from that of a T-64.

What concerns me even more than these undocumented charges are two especially ill-conceived, if not overtly confrontational, pieces of legislation passed by the Congress in December.
The first is H.Res 758 passed on Dec. 4, which, among other charges, accused Russia of having invaded Ukraine again without providing or referring to any sort of evidence photographic or otherwise. Entitled “Strongly condemning the actions of the Russian Federation, under President Vladimir Putin, which has carried out a policy of aggression against neighboring countries aimed at political and economic domination” the resolution is packed with a variety of one-sided assertions and leaves no diplomatic wiggle room for the possibility that Russia has a different view of what has transpired in Ukraine.

According to Ron Paul, these sorts of resolutions are dangerous because they politically commit the U.S. political structure to rigid stances that are politically difficult to back down from and have historically been a stepping stone on the path to war.

The Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014, or S.2828, was passed by the Senate on Dec. 11. This goes even further than merely condemning Russia and authorizes the distribution of both lethal and non-lethal military aid to Kiev, including sniper and assault rifles, mortars and shells, stinger missiles, anti-tank missiles, night vision goggles, radar systems and a host of other hardware items.

If the tables were turned, and it were the Russian lawmakers passing a resolution condemning the U.S. for a variety of international crimes for which exactly zero proof was offered, and then were actively arming a dangerous conflict right on the U.S. border, I think we all know just how ablaze with indignity the U.S. political leadership would be. And rightly so.

So is it any surprise that Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in response, “Both houses of the U.S. Congress have approved the Ukraine Freedom Support Act bypassing debates and proper voting. The overtly confrontational message of the new law cannot but evoke profound regret. Once again Washington is leveling baseless sweeping accusations against Russia and threatening more sanctions.”

The really bizarre part of this story is that I cannot yet find any credible analysis or commentary explaining exactly what the U.S.’s interests are in Ukraine that are so compelling as to risk increasing confrontation with Russia. And it bothers a great many analysts that the U.S. is on an increasingly combative course with yet another country without providing any evidence in support of its accusations and actions. Again.

In response, Russia is rapidly withdrawing from additional dialog with the U.S. and Europe, while drawing ever closer to China, Turkey and India. Russians feel that they are already under siege from the U.S., and that acts of war have already been committed.

Despite being almost completely out of the U.S. news cycle, events are in and around the Ukraine situation are actually picking up pace. On Jan. 15, Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree mobilizing 50,000 new servicemen to the front lines, and Russia just announced that Europe will have to accept gas via Turkey as the Ukraine route is being shut down.

This situation remains much more fluid and nuanced than we’re being told by the Western media, with much more to this story than a short column allows, Those interested in delving deeper can read our latest report here.

But in short, the situation is getting more strained, not less, and it has the very real chance of blossoming into something far larger and more deadly than the sparse coverage in the Western press might imply.

If it looks like a war, acts like a war and smells like a war, it may just be a war. Everyone should be very concerned by these events, but especially European readers.

Much of what RT is doing is cribbed from the tactics of Fox News. However, the West cannot simply respond in kind. Rather, it should counter RT's sensationalism with clear-headed factual reporting. It should also support Ukrainian and Russian efforts to expose the myths broadcast by the propaganda machine and support local journalism efforts.

Some efforts already are showing results. Demand for BBC World Service output has increased dramatically since the beginning of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The BBC's Russian-language service has reached 6.9 million listeners, more than double its audience before the crisis, and BBC's Ukrainian audience has tripled to more than 600,000 since last year.

These numbers show that a demand for unbiased factual reporting does exist, however much RT may try to crowd it out. Such success in Russia and Ukraine suggests that a focus on real news in the West will ultimately expose the propaganda efforts for what they are.

Fully agree---disinformation and fakes are always best countered with the facts--- nothing but the facts even if sometimes the facts are critical to the country stating them.

Most people say outside of Russia tend to be open to listening and then making up their minds---for Russia the old RT theory of give me a crowd and a camera and I will give you a revolution sadly still holds true even to today.

Washington (CNN)Russian hackers behind the damaging cyber intrusion of the State Department in recent months used that perch to penetrate sensitive parts of the White House computer system, according to U.S. officials briefed on the investigation.

To get to the White House, the hackers first broke into the State Department, investigators believe.

The State Department computer system has been bedeviled by signs that despite efforts to lock them out, the Russian hackers have been able to reenter the system. One official says the Russian hackers have "owned" the State Department system for months and it is not clear the hackers have been fully eradicated from the system.

Anatomy of an Info-War: How Russia’s Propaganda Machine Works, and How to Counter It

Tactics of Rebuttal: The 4D Approach

- Dismiss
- Distort
- Distract
- Dismay

Conclusion: Beating the Machine

So Russia’s propaganda machine is powerful, well-oiled and well-financed; but as appears from this analysis, it is both repetitive and predictable. Its tools are a black-and-white narrative; a reactive policy based on the four Ds of dismiss, distort, distract, dismay; and a carefully-groomed set of commentators amplified and publicized by the Kremlin’s media.

Daunting though the task is, the predictability makes it possible for the West to respond. Some steps have already been taken, including the creation of a NATO centre for strategic communications in Latvia, and the incubation of an EU outreach program to Russian speakers. However, such initiatives provide a channel for communication; they do not in themselves define what those channels should say. The analysis above suggests that Western communications, and especially those in Central and Eastern Europe, should focus on developing four key themes in their communications approach:

1. A compelling narrative

2. Identification of the Russian tactics

3. Predicting attack

4. Exposing the Kremlin’s support network

The devil is in the details. Information warfare in the light of Russia's military doctrine
POINT OF VIEW
2015-05-19
Jolanta Darczewska

By highlighting informational threats and giving them a military dimension, the authors of the Russian Federation's military doctrine have outlined the concept of information warfare. It is a kind of combat conducted by both conventional and indirect methods, open and concealed, using military and civilian structures. It has two dimensions: broader ("non-nuclear containment", i.e. combat waged on various levels - political, economic, diplomatic, humanitarian, military) and narrower (as an element supporting of action).

An analysis of these issues enables us to identify several rising trends over the period 2000-2014 in Russian security policy. These boil down to a blurring of the boundaries between internal and external threats, introducing non-military methods and organisational structures to armed combat, and conferring an ideological character on this combat. This leads to a blurring of the contours of inter-state conflicts, which allows Russia to take part in armed conflicts in which it is not officially a party.

Spiegel's interview with former troll.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: What platforms are the St. Petersburg trolls using?

Savchuk: I have personally seen the following: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Livejournal.com as well as the Russian networks VK.com and Odnoklassniki. The targets also include the discussion areas on all major news sites and the forums of the websites of cities in the Russian provinces. A colleague of mine posted primarily in forums in Saratov and Engels, two cities along the Volga River. I worked on Livejournal blogs, which are very popular in Russia.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Is the work just done in Russia-language forums, or are there employees who write in English or German?

Savchuk: Most work in Russian, but I know that some also write English posts. Ukrainian also plays a major role. I also heard about German, but not in this building.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you have evidence that other troll houses exist?

Savchuk: Yes. The branch office in St. Petersburg is simply the one that has been best researched. A few colleagues reported about work trips to a Moscow office. There is also information about a further, highly secretive building in St. Petersburg.

Putin’s Magnificent Messaging Machine

By pretending to be real news, RT is much better than your grandfather’s Soviet propaganda.
By Casey Michel
08/25/15,

In trying to create a likeness of Soviet power, Vladimir Putin is doing one thing demonstrably better than the Kremlin masters of old: propaganda. During the Cold War Soviet outlets like Pravda would disseminate outlandish claims so crass and obviously false that even true comrades turned the page or flipped the channel (and there were a lot fewer channels then). Today the Kremlin-funded RT, with its lineup of conspiracy cranks, slanted reportage and ceaseless assaults on Western institutions, has ended end up as the most-watched network on YouTube. Backed with budget approaching $450 million in 2014, RT now acts as the tip of the Kremlin’s information warfare machine, an agglomeration that seeks to undermine both notions of journalism and faith in the workings of liberal democracy.

Czech Security Information Service says Russia is building new Komintern in their year report.

In general, Russian and pro-Russian propaganda in the Czech Republic and other EU member states is aimed not only against the integrity of the EU and NATO. It is assessed that Russia is creating a structure in Europe drawing on the concept of the Comintern (the Communist International; the Third International) founded by the Soviet Union. This structure is ideologically based on Dugin’s expansionist Neo-Eurasianism2 (which is in a way acceptable to all European political parties, from left-wing extremists and populists to right-wing extremists).

The Comintern was founded in Moscow in 1919 with the goal of protecting the Soviet Union by exporting the revolution to neighboring states, i.e. weakening potential enemies by internal disputes and creating a buffer zone of befriended (or more precisely subordinated) states around the Soviet Union. The Comintern became a tool used for promoting Soviet influence and interests beyond the borders of the Soviet Union by controlling communist parties abroad (in 1928 the Comintern had 580 000 foreign members), spreading propaganda3, covertly financing communist parties abroad4, and by serving as an important and successful espionage platform. The Comintern employed skillful Soviet intelligence officers (e.g. acting under cover as academics or journalists) who recruited young people (especially students with the potential of pursuing a career as civil servants or politicians) helping Soviet espionage activities. The recruiters exploited the ideological naivety, zeal or activism of the young people they targeted. The recruits were not requested to spy against their country, but asked to help in the fight against Fascism (Nazism, Imperialism, etc.) – a relevant issue even today with Fascism, Nazism and Imperialism joined by anti-American, anti-NATO and anti-EU sentiments. The current international, political and societal climate is very close to that of the 1930’s – the golden era of the Comintern5.

It is assessed that the functioning and administration of the new reincarnation of the Comintern (NRI) is not as strict (almost military-like) as in the case of the original Comintern. However, this does not mean the NRI has lesser propaganda and espionage capabilities than the Comintern. The NRI being a more liberal and activist platform is attractive for today’s Western activists (with pro-Russian stances or fighting against the system – USA, NATO, EU, globalization, multiculturalism, liberalism, capitalism, etc.). Even though the NRI does not have the capability of creating a traditional espionage network (agent – handler – the center) as was the case of the Comintern, it has great potential for recruiting active informants.

FAILING MISSION
PUTIN’S PROPAGANDA TV LIES ABOUT ITS POPULARITY
BY KATIE ZAVADSKI 09.17.15

A Kremlin-funded foreign propaganda venture is touted as a big success by backers, but documents provided to The Daily Beast suggest that it is woefully failing in its mission. RT, the 10-year-old network formerly known as Russia Today, appears to be misrepresenting its promulgated success at gaining a broad viewership and promoting the Kremlin’s agenda while spending as much as internationally renowned competitors. The network is also accused of exaggerating its audience and impact with its sole financier—the Russian government—and pretending that it has had a far bigger impact in the Western media sphere than it has, particularly online. Its highest-trafficked videos on YouTube, for instance, apparently pertain to “metrosexuals, bums, etc.” rather than anything political.

Notorious Russian television host Dmitry Kiselyov, famous for his anti-Western rhetoric, has admitted to using a fake document during his weekly Vesti Nedeli news show.

During his show on the Rossia 1 television channel on April 24, Kiselyov displayed the ID of Ukrainian Roman Kolia, an officer in the Galician SS-Volunteer division. In a report on the modern-day relationship between Ukraine and the U.S., Kiselyov compared the U.S. to Nazi Germany, the Meduza news website reported.

In the following week's program, Kiselyov thanked the attentive audience for finding “inaccuracies” in the document and said it was fake.

“There are plenty of fakes now — from counterfeit paintings of brilliant artists to quotations falsely attributed to famous people. It is no wonder we fell for it,” he said.

Kiselyov did not apologize for misleading viewers, but used the situation to once again mention the fact that some Ukrainians fought alongside Nazi Germany and said he is thankful for “such artifacts, even if they are made in our time” for “reminding us about true history. “

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/news/article/pro-kremlin-tv-host-kiselyov-admits-using-fake-documents-in-his-show/569657.html

This kind of behaviour is profitable.

Other leaks show that Kiselyov reportedly bought a $4.6-million home in central Moscow in 2014. Navalny has confirmed the purchase in a blog post, citing previously publicly available records, but added he did not know whether the other claims were real. Meanwhile, Shaltai-Boltai's website has been blocked in Russia.

Beyond Propaganda: Soviet Active Measures in Putin’s Russia

https://connections-qj.org/article/beyond-propaganda-soviet-active-measures-putins-russia

Note: you can open the entire article by selecting the pdf link below the title of the article.

Today, in Putin’s Russia, these active measures are once again in use, updated for digitally interconnected “global information space.” The paper begins with an introduction to active measures, then discusses their role in Soviet foreign policy and the attempts by the American “Active Measures Working Group” to counter them. The paper then describes how the Soviet active measures playbook has been updated for the modern era, using three case studies as examples. The paper concludes with a discussion on strategy, reproducing a number of recommendations from key publications.

It isn't too hard to discern how this information warfare tactic can be applied today to further fan the flames of hatred that are escalating on our streets.

Our KGB staff, using new typewriters and wearing gloves so as not to leave fingerprints, typed up hundreds of anonymous hate letters and sent them to dozens of African missions. The letters, purportedly from white supremacists as well as average Americans, were filled with virulent racist diatribes. The African diplomats publicized some of the letters as examples of the racism still rampant in America, and members of the American and foreign press corps quoted from them.

— Oleg Kalugin, 1994

Overall a very insightful article, and in my view it points to the need for a new interagency Active Measures Working Group (U.S.). The mission of the AMWG was to identify and expose Soviet disinformation.

We should also relook NSDD-75 (discussed in the article, and in the next post), as a means to more effectively compete with Russia and other states that threaten our interests.

U.S. RELATIONS WITH THE USSR

U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union will consist of three
elements: external resistance to Soviet-imperialism; internal
pressure on the USSR to weaken' the sources of Soviet imperialism;
and negotiations to eliminate, on the basis of strict reciprocity,
outstanding disagreements. Specifically, U.S. tasks are:

And the Washington Times article for context

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/13/crucial-cold-war-secret/

Crucial Cold War secret

It was 25 years ago, on Jan. 17, 1983, that the blueprint for American victory in the Cold War was quietly formalized by President Ronald Reagan. It came with the roar of winter, by the name of NSDD-75, probably the most important foreign-policy document by the Reagan administration, institutionalizing the president’s intention to undermine the Soviet communist empire.

Another NSC colleague, Tom Reed, called it “the blueprint for the endgame” and “a confidential declaration of economic and political war.” The Soviets, who somehow learned about the highly classified directive, were even more dramatic. An article on NSDD-75 in the Soviet press was titled: “New directive… threatens history.”

The new policy, said Bill Clark, would “turn the Soviet Union inside itself,” encouraging “anti-totalitarian changes within the U.S.S.R.” America, said Mr. Clark, would “seek to weaken Moscow’s hold on its empire.”

When mass protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin erupted in Moscow in December 2011, Putin made clear who he thought was really behind them: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

With the protesters accusing Putin of having rigged recent elections, the Russian leader pointed an angry finger at Clinton, who had issued a statement sharply critical of the voting results. “She said they were dishonest and unfair,” Putin fumed in public remarks, saying that Clinton gave “a signal” to demonstrators working “with the support of the U.S. State Department” to undermine his power. “We need to safeguard ourselves from this interference in our internal affairs,” Putin declared.

2. cyber warfare

CrowdStrike stands fully by its analysis and findings identifying two separate Russian intelligence-affiliated adversaries present in the DNC network in May 2016. On June 15, 2016 a blog post to a WordPress site authored by an individual using the moniker Guccifer 2.0 claiming credit for breaching the Democratic National Committee. This blog post presents documents alleged to have originated from the DNC.

All falls under the Russian KGB/FSB/SVR term "active measures"......

Back in 2010, a series of sex tapes started hitting the internet in Russia. Several members of Russia’s anti-Putin intelligentsia were caught in various states of undress with a woman named Katya, and sometimes with each other, and sometimes with cocaine, and sometimes without. The show was repeated again this spring, when a former prime minister who is now prominent figure in Russia’s embattled opposition was caught in bed with another activist, the whole thing leaked for the world to see.

The tapes landed with a thud — sexual lasciviousness isn’t exactly a shocker in Russia — but left the subjects pretty embarrassed. “Imagine knowing that all those people, everyone you know, have seen this tape,” one of the men, prominent writer Victor Shenderovich, told journalist Julia Ioffe at the time.

This is what the Kremlin excels at — call it kompromat, or black PR, or information warfare. (The terms in Russian are many! It’s kind of like the “Inuit have dozens of words for snow” thing, but with the added bonus of being true.)

The DNC hack appears to be just the latest example — but the boldest Russia has tried in some time, if ever.

The sex tape campaign hit pretty low — Putin has worked hard to marginalize any opposition to him and the people it targeted were largely unknown to those outside of the urban web-savvy elite. Two years ago, the Kremlin aimed higher — leaking a phone call that featured Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland saying “#### the EU” in the midst of hand-wringing over the future of Ukraine. Did the leak turn the tides of the war there and forever damage the transatlantic relationship? No. Did it work to further chip away at goodwill in Europe towards the Obama administration? Without a doubt.

Now comes the hack of the DNC. I could spend the next few paragraphs detailing all the evidence pointing to Russia’s involvement — the investigation by security firm Crowdstrike, first revealed by the Washington Post; the Russian trails found in the hacker who claimed, the day following the story, to have actually carried out the attack; the fact that the personal email of a DNC staffer investigating Trump’s pro-Kremlin aide Paul Manafort was targeted; and even the fact that the emails were leaked via Wikileaks, whose founder had a TV show on Russian state television, criticized the Panama Papers for including Putin in their investigation, and took credit for delivering Ed Snowden to the Kremlin’s doorstep. But that’s all been done a million times over. The Russian thing to do would be to ask, Komu eto vygodno?, which means, Who does this benefit?, and the answer would probably be the same.

Yes, Putin wants Trump in power — wouldn’t you? An anti-internationalist who questions the use of NATO and wants to withdraw from the WTO while pushing for “deals” without thinking about pesky things like “rights” and “freedom.”

But why this hack, and why now?

Because there’s nothing Moscow plays better in than shame — degrading the worth of things by chipping away at them in ways that makes the world an uglier place.

In fact, the hack, published on Wikileaks — coincidentally, of course! — on the eve of the launch of the convention in Philadelphia probably achieved more than Russia could have ever dreamed — the resignation of chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, full domination of the news cycle, an FBI investigation. The Russians, in fact, seemed stunned. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, is known among reporters to always provide a quick turn of phrase even when he had nothing to say. This morning, he refused to comment on allegations of Russian involvement in the hack. State TV is hardly covering it at all.

Maybe the Russians got in over their heads with this one.

The content of the hacked emails — namely, party favoritism of Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders — is real and indeed embarrassing, but has been overtaken by what appears to be Russia’s attempted meddling in the US election. Now Russia is the story, and that may not have been part of the plan. But that’s what happens when you jump into an environment you don’t entirely control, with a media you don’t entirely control, which is why Russia wants Trump, who wants to control the media. You see where this is going?

One line keeps running through my head throughout this whole mess — and it applies to Bernie supporters as much as it applies to those who have been warning for years of Russia’s destructive policies both at home and abroad: Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.

Guccifer 2.0: All Roads Lead to Russia

ThreatConnect follows Guccifer 2.0’s French breadcrumbs back to a Russian VPN Service

Read the full series of posts following the DNC Breach: “Rebooting Watergate: Tapping into the Democratic National Committee”, “Shiny Object? Guccifer 2.0 and the DNC Breach“, “What’s in a Name Server?“, and “Guccifer 2.0: the Man, the Myth, the Legend?“

In our initial Guccifer 2.0 analysis, ThreatConnect highlighted technical and non-technical inconsistencies in the purported DNC hacker’s story as well as a curious theme of French “connections” surrounding various Guccifer 2.0 interactions with the media. We called out these connections as they overlapped, albeit minimally, with FANCY BEAR infrastructure identified in CrowdStrike’s DNC report.

Now, after further investigation, we can confirm that Guccifer 2.0 is using the Russia-based Elite VPN service to communicate and leak documents directly with the media. We reached this conclusion by analyzing the infrastructure associated with an email exchange with Guccifer 2.0 shared with ThreatConnect by Vocativ’s Senior Privacy and Security reporter Kevin Collier. This discovery strengthens our ongoing assessment that Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian propaganda effort and not an independent actor.

Continued........

Conclusion:

ThreatConnect is the first to identify and detail analysis of Guccifer 2.0’s operational infrastructure. In our original hypothesis, we suspected Guccifer 2.0 might be leveraging French infrastructure to communicate with the global media, and we have validated this finding with the help of the media. As more details continue to surface surrounding Guccifer 2.0, we continue to identify heavy traces of Russian activity, from the specific Russian-based VPN service provider, domain registrants, and registrars as well as various discrete events that have circumstantial marks of Russian origins.

As we pointed out in our previous analysis, we conclude Guccifer 2.0 is an apparition created under a hasty Russian D&D campaign, which has clearly evolved into an Active Measures Campaign. Those who are operating under the Guccifer 2.0 Twitter, WordPress and Email communications are likely made up a cadre of non-technical politruk attempting to establish “Guccifer 2.0” as a static fixture on the world stage along the likes of Manning, Assange or Snowden. Their use of Russian VPN services with French infrastructure may shed light on a method Russian intelligence operatives use — domestic services coupled with foreign infrastructure — to help hide their hand and deter any potential attribution to Russia.

Guccifer 2.0 has subsequently claimed responsibility, both publicly and privately, for the 19,000+ DNC emails posted on Wikileaks on 22 July, and it appears that his persona is not fading in the run up to the election. The execution of Guccifer 2.0’s campaign thus far is rife with errors that have allowed us to attribute this persona to Russian-based infrastructure.

Maintaining a ruse of this nature within both the physical and virtual domains requires believable and verifiable events which do not contradict one another. That is not the case here. Our research into Guccifer 2.0’s infrastructure further solidifies our assessment that the persona is a Russia-controlled platform that can act as a censored hacktivist. Moscow determines what Guccifer 2.0 shares and thus can attempt to selectively impact media coverage, and potentially the election, in a way that ultimately benefits their national objectives.
