Notice this mirrors the exact thing we were watching for by the Soviet Army in the Cold War days---snap drills that would be the precursor to an actual invasion—suddenly and with no warning---notice the use of tactical nuclear missiles and their launchers as well and check in the picture the range of that missile-all the way to Berlin.

This goes to the debate that broke out here in the early days of Crimea--and it is interesting that it is now coming out.

Crimea was a hardcore geo political decision made already in 2013 with the military plans going back a number of years as was leaked by a Russian planner from those days.

This short article negates any argument ie "myth" that was floating in the West-- ie---it was the fault of NATO expansionism, it is the Russian sphere of influence to the grand "myth" of "humiliation".

It was a hardcore geo political decision made and it assumed the West would "allow" it and got back to business as normal and the same goes for the eastern Ukraine---only during the Ukraine adventure did Putin realize his mistake and I personally think that what he was told ---"they could survive a financial focused sanction regime" was a house of cards built on a typical Russian Ponzi scheme-- a la typical Soviet style "telling a great story because the truth will get you killed" approach to Russian style decision making.

During Olimpic Games in Sochi #Putin was told Russia had enough foreign currency reserves to annex #Crimea.

It is interesting how Russia interprets the world around them and negates that reality if it does not jive with their own "world vision".

Ukraine stopped the payments and bank transactions as they simply have no governance control over the occupied regions and yet Russia states that they are not to do that---actually Russia attempts again to dictate what a sovereign country can and or cannot do.

Article concerning the Russian GRU informational-psych ops operating out of the occupied areas of eastern Ukraine.

According to operational data from Information Resistance:

Agencies of the informational-psychological operations (IPSYOPS) of the GRU of the General Staff and the Russian Federal Security Service [FSB] were tasked to carry out a large-scale information campaign to disrupt or substantially obstruct preparations for the 4th round of mobilization in Ukraine.

The operation is planned in conjunction with the structures of the “information war” of the Russian-terrorist forces, created in the occupied areas of Donbas by GRU experts of the RF General Staff.

The main purpose of the operation is to disrupt or ultimately hinder the mobilization [in Ukraine] through a large-scale disinformation campaign, thereby preventing the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations to increase the number of operating reserves, or to significantly slow down and complicate the process.

The Ukrainian reservists and their family members are the designated target groups and objects of this campaign. The task – is to create a negative context around the ongoing so-called anti-terrorist operation (the unbearable living conditions of Ukrainian soldiers in the ATO zone; a representation of the ATO forces as “cannon fodder;” the presentation of terrorism in Donbas as a “national liberation movement,” etc.).

During the operation, there are plans to make extensive use of the formation of “properly
structured public opinion on social networks” with the assistance of video and audio materials and various “eyewitness statements.” In addition, IPSYOPS agencies in Russia and Donbas are tasked with establishing “a direct or indirect impact” on the audience through some Ukrainian mass media to create so-called “secondary credibility,” primarily through the publication of “credible materials for investigative journalism.”

At least two organizational and administrative meetings took place to discuss the coordination of activies under this operation by the Russian IPSYOPS agencies and the relevant institutions created on the occupied territory of Donbas.

Here is a proposed possible solution to the eastern Ukraine in the LA Times--the latest of four suggestions---that actually makes sense and actually goes along one of the main points I made month--does the current Ukraine need the Donbas? To make it work the sanctions must remain just a heavy and in place until Russia concedes that it must pull completely back.

What is extremely interesting and is totally overlooked and not commented at all on by western media pundits---the simple fact the Minsk Agreement negotiated by the Ukrainians was basically a solid win---especially if you see the mercenaries and Russia attempting to reverse the win and dragging their feet on continuing on the Minsk path. The mercenaries attempted a month ago to state they had not signed the agreement but that was rapidly shown to be a lie when their own signatures were shown to the press---since then they keep attempting to talk change but the Ukraine says no and even with Russian verbal help not much is actually possible as Russia signed the agreement as well.

Well worth the read. As the current Ukraine leadership seems to be headed in that direction which I believe the Russians fully understand is also occurring. Militarily the UA has held on well, started an intensifying guerrilla war and has inflicted heavy losses on the RA, and is in fact rebuilding all in the middle of a war.

Thought about placing this US article under the info war thread as it is rather interesting---while written in the last few days it does not accurately reflect exactly what is ongoing in the Baltics.

The question as to why it does not accurately reflect is interesting as it has a definitive proRussian slant and I wonder why a US media source would release something that is not quiet accurate unless it is an info war designed article.

Not a single mention that the Baltics are members of NATO and the US has repeatedly stated it stands by Article 5 to begin with, then it does not reflect the simple fact that most Baltic countries economies are nothing like the rest of western Europe or the US so 2% is massive for them--and lastly the Baltics have felt like most of Europe the question of using armed force to change borders was no longer a European "thing".

It also does not reflect that their standing militaries were small to begin with also based on the fact that they had "assumed" territorial integrity was "international law".

It has also been confirmed that the initial damage to the cockpit reflects a missile detonating slightly below it and focused on the cockpit region and the cockpit due to the structural damage separated from the main aircraft long before the plane broke up in mid air.

Russia is already starting to try to negate these initial reports by questioning the over all investigation, but at least they have not gone back to the "it was the Ukrainian jet" thesis.

"That was a minute after the explosions, I think. Maybe even less, something like 30 seconds."

You were there alone?
"I was the only one on the balcony. But the other inhabitants all were also on their balconies. Behind every window you could see a face."

There are more people who saw the trail at that moment?
"Yes, yes"

There are more people who photographed the same?
"That is very well possible. But at that time, July 17th, there were already rumours in the city that making photos was not really safe. It was being said: don't make photos if you don't want to end up in 'uncomfortable situations'. At that moment the city was already occupied. At the administration building there was a flag and it was not a Ukrainian."

Do you still have the camera with which you took the photos?
"I contacted a friend of mine and gave him the photos, including the originals. That friend contacted the SBU and they were interested in the photos. He handed them over to the SBU. After that I had to explain the details of the photo to them and hand the camera over to them."

Did they compensate you for this?
"To replace it? Of course. They paid the value of the camera back to me."

Did you make private copies?
"Sure. But I had to give them the flash-cards too."

And after that you went to Kiev?
"Yes, in the beginning I directly spoke to with the SBU. After that representatives of the international investigation committee contacted me via the SBU. That was beginning of August, when I also handed them the camera. THe SBU didn't need it themselves and gave it to the Dutch researches. They had asked for the camera."

Did the researchers talk to you?
"Yes, I talked extensively with the researchers of the international committee. Those were two researchers: one from the Netherlands and one from Australia. We talked about three hours and it was recorded with a video camera."

Do you think they can use your material?
"Yes I think they will use it. The photos are circumstantial evidence. There are no other photos available that proof that this BUK launched something in that area. While everybody knows what the truth is, there is no other evidence."

Why did you agree to have this interview?

Actually this single point of failure is a must--as the Ukrainian guerrilla units usually come from the area and know exactly what targets hurt and how to protect the civilian population they are working in.

As a former member of an elite US SF team in the 60s/early 70s this guerrilla tactic was our own bread and butter TTP---practiced for speed and effectiveness even with live targets until we dropped. Then it was the Soviet Army. This tactic is designed to nickel and dime, slow down logistics and to channel logistics onto roadways for ambushing. By the way guerrilla warfare is 1) not new and 2) similar tactics for hundreds of years. Even now the IS is using what they learned from 2003 to 2010 in Iraq---their basic core tactic--swarming.

But then we hear we do not understand the fighting strength/tactics of IS---history is showing us--we never seem to learn.

Together with the confirmed, "unfounded" train derailment in #Makeevka yesterday,I believe there is some serious partisan campaign going on.

The second Cold War US SF guerrilla tactic was the early raiding and ambushing of identified Soviet attack forces in order to slow down, cause confusion and or delay a planned offensive. It really seems the KSA is doing more through their oil warfare to reign in the Russians both in the Ukraine and especially in Syria where without Russian weapon deliveries Assad would have lost a long time ago. AND this effects as well the Ukraine.

And it is financially crippling the Iran and it's ability to support both Assad and engage in Iraq. When one thinks about it they have done far more than anything the US is currently doing. BUT is the US really taken by surprise of this development as Kerry visited the KSA on a short but intense visit during the Ukrainian problem period in Aug/Sept and the Russians have argued it is a KSA/US joint operation directed against them.

The KSA has basically "declared economic war" on their regional hegemon Iran and it's main supporter Russia in the ME.

Saudi Oil Minister Ali Naimi really got the world's attention in an interview he gave to the energy journal Middle East Economic Survey (MEES). We told you earlier that Naimi said the Saudis don't care how low the price of oil goes: "Whether it goes down to $20, $40, $50, $60, it is irrelevant."

What's interesting though is Naimi's rationale for not caring. Basically, he told MEES, the Saudis can afford not to care about the low price of oil.

The Russians, by contrast, cannot afford it because they are inefficient producers who can't stop pumping even if they wanted to. Low prices are decimating the Russian economy because the country is dependent on oil. That's driving down the value of the ruble, and making it impossible for Russia to pay its debts. Already, Russia's central bank has had to bail out one of its private banks. A full scale Russian collapse is increasingly likely. Russia can't reduce the amount of oil it pumps (which might raise prices) because its oil fields and technology aren't as good as the Saudis'.

The reason Saudi Arabia isn't collapsing like Russia is because the Saudis have been careful and efficient producers, who have stockpiled huge amounts of cash in case this day would come, Naimi reckons.

Everyone is asking whether the Saudis should pump less oil and let the price come up, rescuing nations like Russia who need the price of oil to be $105 a barrel. But why should the Saudis be punished for Russia's uselessness? Naimi told MEES — via The Financial Times — that Russia doesn't "deserve market share":

It is also a defence of high efficiency producing countries, not only of market share. We want to tell the world that high efficiency producing countries are the ones that deserve market share. That is the operative principle in all capitalist countries.

You know Naimi is talking about Russia specifically because of the geography he calls out by name:

... The problem with old fields around the world is that they need continuous investment in new wells, and they cannot shut old wells, because if they do, they will not come back up. So they are wary in that respect, particularly in West Siberia, where they have been producing for a long time and the wells there are declining.

... I want to make one thing clear. It is unfair of you to ask Opec to cut. We are the smallest producer. We produce less than 40% of global output. We are the most efficient producer. It is unbelievable after the analysis we carried out for us to cut.

He has a very interesting take on US/EU leadership issues since 1994 and he might in fact be totally correct in his assessment.

Toomas Ilves: Well, I don’t think in regional terms, although there are regional manifestations of the deterioration. Since the invasion and annexation of Crimea, we’ve seen the collapse of the Transatlantic security environment as we’ve known it. We could start with the UN charter, which forbids aggression, but in the Transatlantic space the basis for security has been the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which specifically forbids a change in borders through force or threat of force. That no longer holds.

I would argue that it no longer held after the 2008 invasion of Georgia, but the rest of the Transatlantic community did not buy that. In fact, they let it slide, I would say, first by breaking off negotiations over the EU-Russia partnership as long as Russian troops remained. Then, a month later, with no change in status of foreign troops, Europe claimed, “Thank God common sense prevailed.” That was 2008, so we’ve hit the snooze button a few times; but now, finally, we have the wake-up call.

We have allowed aggression to stand in Georgia, having done nothing and instead gone off on this “peace, love, Woodstock” idea. We’re now in a situation where we have genuine aggression, the collapse of the post-Cold War order, and we see all that on the 25th anniversary of the annus mirabilis of 1989—when we should be celebrating the neo-Hegelian triumph of the Fukuyaman view of the inevitability of liberal democracy. I too have believed all along that we were heading there. Unfortunately, what we’re seeing right now is that it can be turned around. When you have a collapse of order, you can expect all kinds of things.

To the collapse of order we can add the 1990 Paris Charter for Europe, a major summit celebrating the freedom of Eastern Europe—minus the Baltic states, which were excluded—that concluded that all CSCE (OSCE) states have the right to choose their own security environment. What we see in 2014 is not only that you do not have that right—consider the statements by Medvedev and Putin in 2009, that they invaded Georgia to keep it from joining NATO—but now Russia’s rationale for doing what it did is something so minor as Ukraine’s wanting to sign an Association Agreement with the EU.

I’m often stunned by the statements made by people within the European Union as if the EU Association Agreement were the big thing. Estonia signed its Association Agreement ten years before it joined the European Union. Five years before, we began negotiating, having been accepted to begin negotiations. Basically, the Association Agreement provides for teacher/student exchange programs and a slightly reduced tariff rate. This is not European Transatlantic imperialism, advancing to the borders of Russia with its evil designs.

Then, of course, there’s the failure of the 1994 Budapest memorandum, which was supposed to guarantee the territorial integrity of Ukraine (in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear arms). This may have far-reaching implications for generations. I don’t know what country in the future would ever give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for a security guarantee.

Look around, and you see all kinds of stuff happening. In Denmark on Bornholm island they have this annual summer festival that involves the entire political elite, and the Russians chose that particular weekend to do a mock bombing on the island with nuclear-armed missiles. Just recently, their bombers were circling Guam. They’ve been doing things in Norway, in Japan, Portugal. The worst part about it in terms of standard security is that they’re doing this unscheduled, and flying with their transponders switched off. In another incident, a Danish SAS passenger plane came within 100 meters of a Russian plane that the pilots didn’t see or know was there. This is a kind of behavior that should be far more alarming than some of the Putinversteher tend to think.

One guerrilla unit attacked a mercenary checkpoint killing all in the checkpoint then placed a motion sensor on the MG and then left--the mercenaries came back and attacked an empty checkpoint due to the firing MG for over 1.5 hours.

The second unit is credited with killing 12--3 in a bunker, 2 in a listening post and 7 on the street.

He has a very interesting take on US/EU leadership issues since 1994 and he might in fact be totally correct in his assessment.

Toomas Ilves: Well, I don’t think in regional terms, although there are regional manifestations of the deterioration. Since the invasion and annexation of Crimea, we’ve seen the collapse of the Transatlantic security environment as we’ve known it. We could start with the UN charter, which forbids aggression, but in the Transatlantic space the basis for security has been the 1975 Helsinki Final Act, which specifically forbids a change in borders through force or threat of force. That no longer holds.

I would argue that it no longer held after the 2008 invasion of Georgia, but the rest of the Transatlantic community did not buy that. In fact, they let it slide, I would say, first by breaking off negotiations over the EU-Russia partnership as long as Russian troops remained. Then, a month later, with no change in status of foreign troops, Europe claimed, “Thank God common sense prevailed.” That was 2008, so we’ve hit the snooze button a few times; but now, finally, we have the wake-up call.

We have allowed aggression to stand in Georgia, having done nothing and instead gone off on this “peace, love, Woodstock” idea. We’re now in a situation where we have genuine aggression, the collapse of the post-Cold War order, and we see all that on the 25th anniversary of the annus mirabilis of 1989—when we should be celebrating the neo-Hegelian triumph of the Fukuyaman view of the inevitability of liberal democracy. I too have believed all along that we were heading there. Unfortunately, what we’re seeing right now is that it can be turned around. When you have a collapse of order, you can expect all kinds of things.

To the collapse of order we can add the 1990 Paris Charter for Europe, a major summit celebrating the freedom of Eastern Europe—minus the Baltic states, which were excluded—that concluded that all CSCE (OSCE) states have the right to choose their own security environment. What we see in 2014 is not only that you do not have that right—consider the statements by Medvedev and Putin in 2009, that they invaded Georgia to keep it from joining NATO—but now Russia’s rationale for doing what it did is something so minor as Ukraine’s wanting to sign an Association Agreement with the EU.

I’m often stunned by the statements made by people within the European Union as if the EU Association Agreement were the big thing. Estonia signed its Association Agreement ten years before it joined the European Union. Five years before, we began negotiating, having been accepted to begin negotiations. Basically, the Association Agreement provides for teacher/student exchange programs and a slightly reduced tariff rate. This is not European Transatlantic imperialism, advancing to the borders of Russia with its evil designs.

Then, of course, there’s the failure of the 1994 Budapest memorandum, which was supposed to guarantee the territorial integrity of Ukraine (in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear arms). This may have far-reaching implications for generations. I don’t know what country in the future would ever give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for a security guarantee.

Look around, and you see all kinds of stuff happening. In Denmark on Bornholm island they have this annual summer festival that involves the entire political elite, and the Russians chose that particular weekend to do a mock bombing on the island with nuclear-armed missiles. Just recently, their bombers were circling Guam. They’ve been doing things in Norway, in Japan, Portugal. The worst part about it in terms of standard security is that they’re doing this unscheduled, and flying with their transponders switched off. In another incident, a Danish SAS passenger plane came within 100 meters of a Russian plane that the pilots didn’t see or know was there. This is a kind of behavior that should be far more alarming than some of the Putinversteher tend to think.

Notice the Estonian President's use of the German word "Putinversteher".

The Germans have had a long history of blocking anything that they felt would anger Russia and disturb their "Ostpolitik".

Four days after the July crash, the Russian Defense Ministry floated the theory that an SU-25 had shot down the Malaysian jet, but aviation experts quickly cast doubt on the claim.

At the time, David Gleave, an aviation and safety researcher at Loughborough University, told RFE/RL that when loaded with missiles the SU-25 could not reach an altitude much higher than 5 kilometers -- MH17 was flying at around 10 kilometers when it was hit.

According to the Russian-backed witness, the plane was able to overcome this hindrance by turning its nose up and firing into the air.

Pavel Felgenhauer, a journalist and military analyst, told the independent Snob.ru that the new Russian claims are "complete garbage."

Felgenhauer said the SU-25 would not have had the capacity to catch up to a Boeing 777 at cruising speed. And because the R-60 is a heat-seeking missile, he said it does not make sense that the nose of MH17 appears to have been hit rather than the engine.

Ukraine's Security Service said the alleged Ukrainian pilot did not fly on the date of the MH17 crash and that his plane had been taken out of commission for repairs on July 16.

But in a statement, Russia's Investigative Committee said "the way he behaved and from his stated facts, the investigators had no doubts about the sincerity of the information" provided by the alleged witness.

The law-enforcement authority, which has had a combative relationship with Kyiv since battles between government forces and pro-Russian separatists broke out in eastern Ukraine last April, also said its source had passed a polygraph test.

Higgins, said the new Russian story may be meant to "confuse the situation."

"You just have to look at how quickly that story and other stories related to it were spread in the wake of [the Dutch report]."

The head of an organization that unites special forces veterans in Yekaterinburg openly talks about his role in sending mercenaries to fight in Ukraine. Vladimir Yefimov calls them volunteers, but admits that they get between $2,000 and $5,000 depending on their rank. “I think people should get paid. They are risking their lives after all. Payments help to attract professionals. They come back with shining eyes – the performed their duty and they are not feeling bitter”, he told E1. He says he helped six groups of 15 to 30 people to reach Donetsk. Two other groups, 30 people in each, went to Luhansk.

Most amazingly, he claims that they travel with “humanitarian convoys” and at least once the Russian Red Cross helped them with papers. “First time they traveled in the guise of Red Cross employees. They received papers from the local bureau. When [the convoy] reached the destination, people stayed. They were given weapons and issued combat orders”, Yefimov says.

NOTE: he confirms what the Ukrainians have been saying about the "so called" aid convoys---they are simply bringing in weapons and fighters--nothing for the civilian population----thanks for the tip mirhond

NOTE: it seems the Russian RC participates in the weapons and fighter smuggling as well.

It appears to be largely a grassroots initiative, but actively assisted by the state. When Yefimov approached Putin’s envoy to the Urals with a request to institutionalize it, the official refused but thanked him for patriotism.

Yefimov first surfaced during a ceremony in which several people received state awards for fighting in Ukraine. One of them, paratrooper Alexey Zasov was awarded posthumously. The family was not allowed to see the body when his coffin arrived. Relatives were told that he died “while accompanying a humanitarian convoy” in Russia, but soldiers from his unit told them that it happened in Ukraine.

And, even though it sounds paradoxical, Narod does not exist for the nationalists either—for them, there is a political nation based on individual membership (the classic bourgeois nation is a product of Europe during the period of Modernity). Narod does not exist for all these ideologies—this is the complete ideological nomenclature of Modernity. But it does exist—it is the only thing that truly exists. Heidegger used to say, “Dasein exists through a People” (Das Dasein existiert völkisch). That is to say, man’s presence in the world is given to us through Narod. It provides us with language, appearance, psychological attributes, a place in time (history) and space (geopolitics).

Today, Russia’s Narod awakens breaking through the depths of its dreams—difficult and simple, impoverished and enriched—but dreams nonetheless. It views Crimea and Novorossia as territories of its awakening. Thus, Narod heads to a place where the Russian Light pulls it in like a magnet, shining through the heroes of Novorossia. These are not emotions, chauvinism, or ultra-patriotism. This is not a “hurray” or a surface, but, rather, it is the voice of our ultimate Russian depths. We exist authentically only when faced with death. Only when faced with death does it become clear what it means to be Russian. People go to Novorossia, to Donetsk and Lugansk, obeying the Will of Russian History, drawn in by the Russian Death. It is this Red Death that makes Russians what they are. Death in the world. In the name of Narod. Death for Narod is life. Thus, people go to Novorossia to live in the Russian way.

Igor Strelkov is the symbol of the Russian Narod. Strelkov is the embodiment of our spirit, our will, our resistance. And even if we are not there with him, he makes us ashamed of ourselves and proud of him, but most important, he inspires Faith in our Narod. Strelkov exists authentically. In him, our Narod finds its image. And all those who are with him—Gubarev, Motorola, Mozgovoi, Babai, Purgin, and all the heroes of the Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples’ Republics, living or dead—they are all our Narod, its faces. As it is. As it exists. One cannot rip it out, pollute it, or relativize it.

There is also a population, the people. If our Narod is united on both sides of the border, then the population is different. People are not exactly Narod, or more specifically, not quite Narod. They could become the latter if the depths awaken in them, if they face Death, if they wake up. But they could also fail. In that case, they are individuals concerned with survival, comfort, contentment, success, career, material well-being, etc. The individual is the antithesis of Narod, a product of its decay. Narod separates into individuals in order for them to unite in it once again—as in a Church, Cathedral, Motherland. But sometimes this return does not happen. Then we are faced with the pure individual. On his own. In Greek, this kind of a pure individual without any ties to the Whole or his Narod was known as idiotes, a private citizen, which is the source for the term “idiot.” Population comprises idiots in the etymological sense. Narod is something entirely different—it is that which man becomes only when he addresses his own depths, lives inside history, and hears the voice of the Motherland’s sacred space. It is the individual that all political theories of Modernity address: they unite the individuals in different ways: Marxism—into classes, nationalism—into political nations, Liberals—into a civil society, but none of these is a People— Narod. Thus, Modernity rejects Narod dealing only with disparate people. People of Russia consider those in southeastern Ukraine to be different. And they are correct: from the legal standpoint, this is formally the case if the voice from the depths remains silent. In this case, it is absurd to speak of the Russian World, Russian Civilization, and Great Russia. Instead, there are the respective populations of two administrative units, two groups of individuals that have their own interests and goals. Thus, the population of Russia, people of Russia could remain deaf to Novorossia’s pain. According to this kind of logic, different people live there. They are murdered, violated, slaughtered, shelled, and bombed, but this is none of our business. This is neither good, nor pleasant, but, perhaps, they had done something wrong—people think. Yes, people survive. But Narod lives. Herein lies the difference. In order to live, Narod sends its best sons and daughters to their Death. Death for the sake of Narod, for the sake of Life. Not survival—Life.

There also is a State. This is a mechanism, a superstructure. In it, a People—Narod sees its creation and, perhaps, the most successful of its creations. Narod creates the State as a product of its historical will, and is proud of it. But the State could tear away from Narod, forgetting its foundations. And then it could turn into a self-sufficient and dead mechanism, a machine. States could be living, but they could also be dead. A living State does not sever its links with its Narod, which created it, drawing its power from it. It lives and exists. It is. But when the State degenerates, it becomes an apparatus, machine, bureaucratic mechanism rather than an organic living whole. In that case, the State begins to view its Narod as a population, disparate people, and a mechanical sum of atoms. Any unification of these atoms—into a class, nation, or a society—is always arbitrary. The contemporary European State in the era of Modernity emerged dead from the onset. This is a mechanism of agglomerating a population. This kind of a State kills its Narod and turns it into a population. This kind of a State parasitically lives off its Narod, its pain and suffering. It kills its Narod. Finds benefit in this. Makes a Gesheft. This is the State of managers and mechanics; more specifically—a State of traders and businessmen.

Today, this question is particularly acute: what is the Russian State at the moment? Does it belong to its Narod? Or is it mechanical? This is the principal dilemma for Putin, personally, as the head if this State with a vague dual identity. The rise of patriotism in Russia, reunification with Crimea, and the confrontation with the West are all signs of a People’s—Narod’s presence. Cynical political technologists (political scientists), the all-powerful and constantly lying top-level managers, mad corruption, dominant Liberalism, anti-Narod oligarchy, Westernizing on the part of the intelligentsia and the elites all point to the State of death, the State of survival. Putin has been balancing on this narrow fence between the State of a People—Narod and that of the mechanical and alienated Liberal elite for the past 14 years. He kept taking steps in one direction, then another. Of course, without a certain kind of support for Novorossia, today’s picture—even if critically difficult—would not be possible. Were Putin solely on the side if a dead State, Russia Corp., he would have betrayed everything himself long ago. But this is not the case. He comprises the painful drama of the Russian Statehood and its nature, crucified between Narod and the elite (always dependent upon the mass of surviving idiots—idiots in the etymological sense of the word, that is private citizens, individuals). In other words, the picture is as follows: on the one side, Putin (=State) has Strelkov as an embodiment of Narod. This is Novorossia as a whole. These are Russians and all that is Russian. On the other side, there is the elite (Yurgens in all his expressions), bureaucracy (Government, Administration), and average citizens. This is a mechanical, contemporary, Liberal, and Western State—in any case, not Narod, and in a certain sense, anti-Narod. Putin stands in between. Not Putin personally, but rather the State, its meaning and nature. .

In what could be a sign of intensifying infighting between various groups of Russian-backed separatists operating in the east of Ukraine, authorities of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) said they liquidated an "illegal" prison in Luhansk on Jan. 2, shedding light on inhuman treatment of its inmates.

The rapid reaction force “Batman,” military unit, consisting of local pro-Russian rebels and Russian militants, managed the illegal prison, located in a basement of the rebel-captured building, which kept 20 prisoners that were subject to regular torture.

“If a prisoner resisted he was beaten by a plastic pipe,” Aleksey Dakhnenko, the deputy head of the illegal prison and member of the Batman military unit, says in a video interview, posted on YouTube. The head of the prison, known by his nickname Maniac, used a hammer to torture prisoners, he adds.

“Maniac was known for his cruelty. According to rumors he had a surgery toolkit, a set of field surgeon, which he had always laid out in front of detainees to scare them. In such a way he tried to get some testimony out of prisoners,” Dakhnenko says.

Video interview with Aleksey Dakhnenko, deputy head of an illegal prison in Luhansk, in which he confesses his prisoners were tortured.

Russian-backed insurgent forces in eastern Ukraine are arbitrarily detaining civilians and subjecting them to torture, degrading treatment, and forced labor. They also have detained civilians for use as hostages, says the August report by the New York-based watchdog Human Right Watch.

“Pro-Russian insurgents are regularly committing horrendous crimes,” said Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “There are solid grounds to be seriously concerned about the safety and well-being of anyone held by insurgent forces in eastern Ukraine.”

Prior to detaining some members of the Batman group their leader Alexander Bednov, who has a nickname Batman, was killed along with his six bodyguards on Jan. 1 near Luhansk. The Batman group on their page in Vkontakte social network accused Igor Plotnitsky, leader of the self-proclaimed LPR, of killing Bednov. “The mean hand of Plotnitsky killed one of the most authoritative commanders who defended Lugansk and its inhabitants,” is written on the Batman Vkontakte group on Jan.1. Plotnitsky could not be immediately reached for comment.

Popular Ukrainian blogger Denis Kazanskiy, who comes from Donetsk and has extensively written on local Donbas politics, believes the killing is a sign of infighting between Plotnitsky and other militant groups. The Plotnitsky group “with the help of Russian troops started actively exterminating competing gangs” in an attempt to consolidate power in the region, Kazansky wrote in his blog on Jan. 2.

Recently, the number of shellings and provocations by the illegal armed groups in Donbass has increased substantially. Just today, thirteen instances of such shellings have taken place around the towns of Debaltseve, Hnytove, Novohryhorivka, Troitske, Chornyhine, Mayorsk, Krymske, as well as the Donetsk airport. UA BUK 312 has been spotted on Kramatorsk airfield beginning of August. It can already be seen there since July 23rd. That shows it was ALL THE

TIME in Ukrainian possession and control.

They will have to come up with something new again. (Or just admit the truth of course...)

Social media and conflict zones: the new evidence base for policymaking

In recent years, content shared via social media from conflict war zones has allowed us to gain a far deeper understanding of the on-the-ground realities of specific conflicts than previously possible. This presents a real opportunity for providing robust evidence which can underpin foreign and security policymaking about emerging, or rapidly escalating, conflict zones. Despite this opportunity, however, policymakers have generally been slow to adapt to the volume of information disseminated on social media from various armed groups in Syria and slower still to use this as an evidence base for policy generation.

In the case of the Syrian conflict, for example, far more information in the public domain comes not from journalists on the ground (who, it goes without saying face extreme danger in attempting to report from many parts of Syria) but from social media and user generated content online.

In 2012, the video streaming site Bambuser was adopted by groups opposing the Syrian government to livestream videos of protests and violence from across Syria. The situation changed as violence escalated and internet access in opposition-controlled areas became increasingly limited. Today, this means that the vast majority of social media accounts being used by the Syrian opposition are associated with specific locations, media centres, or armed groups. This provides researchers with a real opportunity to understand the actors and events taking place on the ground.

This approach has its advantages: because comparatively few people in opposition areas are using social media, and they tend to be associated with specific groups, it is possible to collect and organise the majority of the social media accounts that are being used in opposition controlled areas. These accounts can be monitored for activity, and cover the majority of information coming from opposition controlled areas through social media. This can provide a detailed and dynamic picture of the conflict as well as a detailed understanding of the various armed groups.

There are challenges in this approach, however. The most obvious, in the Syrian context, is that researchers are limited to what those groups post online – and perhaps more importantly, that this often represents a narrow perspective on the conflict in opposition areas. A second problem is neatly illustrated by the Bellingcat research on the current conflict in Ukraine. Here, the opposite is true: because internet access is not limited, anyone can post anything they like online and they can post to a wider variety of social media sites. Granted, this vast amount of information posted from a huge variety of sources provides a richer picture, but it is also one that is harder to access through the ‘noise’ of other material.

Open source intelligence analysis has the potential not only to inform us about various actors and events on the ground, but also to allow us to piece together disparate pieces of information into a wider, more investigative, piece of research. In Bellingcat’s MH17 investigation, the research team compiled information from dozens of different sources, discovered by searching through thousands of social media accounts from Ukraine and Russia, on a wide variety of social media sites. Using this information it was possible to track the movements of a Buk missile launcher on July 17th through separatist-controlled territory to the likely launch site of the missile that downed MH17. The team was also able to find videos from multiple sources of exactly the same missile launcher travelling as part of a convoy through Russia towards the Ukrainian border a few weeks before MH17 was downed. The evidence was sufficiently robust to allow us to conclude that the Buk seen in Ukraine on July 17th originated from the Russian military.

Our research on the Buk missile launcher demonstrates that not only is there a wealth of largely untapped information available online and especially on social media, but also that a relatively small team of analysts is able to derive a rich picture of a conflict zone. Clearly, research of this kind must be underpinned by an understanding of the way in which content is being produced, who is sharing it, and, crucially, how to verify it – and these are methodological challenges which need to be addressed systematically. Nonetheless, the overarching point is that there is a real opportunity for open source intelligence analysis to provide the kind of evidence base that can underpin effective and successful foreign and security policymaking. It is an opportunity that policymakers should seize.
