Yet on what should have been an ordinary patrol, L/Cpl Joshua Leakey’s actions were so extraordinary that he has now won Britain’s highest award for battlefield gallantry.
He has become the first living British soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross during the Afghan campaign and only the 15th to be awarded the medal since the end of the Seccond world War.
