The more I read here the parallels with the Spanish Civil War seem clear. Maybe even Mexico during the US Civil War.

IIRC each started as a local civil war and attracted external intervention by some, first with support and then "boots on the ground"; with others standing on the sidelines and a good deal of diplomacy.

Those who actively intervened may have lost treasure, men and prestige those who really suffered were the locals - only relatively small numbers emigrated at the end of the Spanish Civil War IIRC.

From my "armchair" I still consider it likely that a stalemate will emerge, with the official regime holding onto a small statelet - with Russian protection. Sadly another, probably even more bitter conflict will the occur - between ISIS and its opponents.

The bombings of the so-called international coalition led by the United States of the Syrian territory and the country’s infrastructure in many areas are criminal aggression, the ministry’s document says. This aggression, the letters say, is aimed at destruction of the country’s economic and industrial infrastructure, it’s intentional destruction of the basis of subsistence of all the Syrian people.

MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. Russia’s air force grouping in Syria has reduced the intensity of its sorties as some warplanes conducted reconnaissance of terrorist facilities, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said on Monday.

"The intensity of our air group’s sorties has been below the normal level in Syria in the past few days. However, the number of targets per flight increased," the spokesman said.

According to the general, the intensity of sorties was lower as some Russian warplanes performed tasks to further reconnoiter terrorist facilities, using the data supplied by representatives of the Syrian opposition, the information center in Baghdad and the command of the Syrian army.

"Let me remind you that our planes are delivering all their air strikes only after a check via several channels and a confirmation that facilities belong to terrorist groupings," the spokesman told journalists.

The Defense Ministry spokesman said earlier that Russian aircraft had performed 137 sorties over the past 72 hours to attack 448 terrorist facilities in seven Syrian provinces.

Russian Aerospace Forces started a military operation against the Islamic State terrorist group (which is banned in Russia) in the Syrian territory at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on September 30. The air group in Syria includes more than 50 warplanes, including Su-34 and Su-24M bombers; Su-25 assault aircraft; Su-30SM fighter jets as well as Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters. The Russian Navy is also involved in the military operation. The warships of the Russian Caspian flotilla delivered a massive cruise missile strike from the Kalibr-class sea-based missile system on the night to October 7.

MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. The Russian military have observed a change in the tactics of terrorists in Syria - they now act "not so brazenly" as before, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told reporters on Monday.

"We have observed a significant change in the terrorists’ tactics throughout the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. The gangs now act not so brazenly as a month ago," he said.

According to him, the terrorists are trying to use the defensive maneuver strategy, regularly moving and dodging strikes of both the Syrian government troops and Russian aviation.

"The routes of supplies of arms and ammunition are constantly changing. This is done mainly during the night with all the elements of masking," the defense spokesman said.

Previously, the Russian army’s General Staff said that Russian air strikes in Syria destroyed the militants’ command and control and logistics system and that the militants were experiencing an acute shortage of ammunition, weapons and fuel. The main forces of the militants have lost the fighting capacity, the General Staff said.

On September 30, Russia’s Aerospace Force started to deliver the first pinpoint airstrikes against the militants’ positions. The Russian aviation grouping comprises more than 50 aircraft and helicopters, including the Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M bombers, Su-25 attack aircraft, Su-30SM fighters and Mil Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.

Since the start of its operation in Syria, conducted at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian aircraft have performed hundreds of sorties to destroy dozens of ammunition depots, factories for the production of explosives and command posts. Also, overnight to October 7, the Caspian Flotilla ships delivered a massive strike on the IS objectives in Syria, using Kalibr NK shipborne cruise missiles. The Russian authorities have said on many occasions that Russia’s military forces would not take part in any ground operation in Syria.

"With effective support by Russian war planes, the Syrian army has passed over to more active operations, seriously damaging the system of command among various terrorist groups. A direct contact, which the Russian Defense Ministry has had with representatives of the armed groups that are opposed to terrorism, is also very important," Zakharova said.

At the same time, Zakharova noted that the terrorist units were preserving a considerable potential and could recruit fresh forces into their ranks. "They are launching attacks in some sections and are changing their tactics," the Russian diplomat added.

"The defenders of the Deir ez-Zor airport have destroyed during the fierce fighting more than 50 Islamic State terrorists, an armored vehicle, three vehicles equipped with machine guns, a rocket artillery system, an ammunition depot and communications infrastructure," he told reporters.

The air base in Deir ez-Zor is also a civilian airport.

According to the general, the offensive of the Syrian army contributes to the emergence of conflicts between militants’ units.

"Our troops continue an offensive, which contributes to terrorists’ demoralization and the development of conflicts between the various groups among them," he told reporters.

"Our troops continue to perform combat tasks efficiently and accurately. Their morale is high. Terrorists are sustaining heavy losses, desertion in their ranks continues," the Syrian Army representative added.

Ali Mayhub also said the Syrian army has destroyed 40 gunmen and 20 armored vehicles near Palmira.

He said most of the killed terrorists were foreigners. At least 20 armored vehicles and several light vans with machine guns mounted on them were destroyed in Homs Governorate in the direction towards Palmyra.

"Our troops are engaged in fierce fighting with terrorist groups of Islamic State. Gunmen positions have been seized east of the city of Sadad (Christian city in Homs province, 101 kilometers north of Damascus, seized by Jabhat al-Nusra militants in October 2013)," he said.

This group has a great track record in social media open source analysis first for the Ukraine and now focusing on Russian troops in Syria--they have been releasing detailed information on the Russian pilots flying in Syria as well.


InformNapalm volunteer community has documented new facts of the Russian 28th brigade’s servicemen presence in Syria and their participation in the unofficial ground operation. New OSINT investigation exposed soldiers from Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation. Interestingly that the servicemen operate not only near their base in Latakia, but also in the Eastern direction – near Hama.

So, the first character is Aleksei Sergeevich Volkov (born on July 18, 1993), a contract soldier. Probably due to his happiness about soon returning to home he has uploaded several interesting pictures to his social profile:

1.1 Aleksei has a set of photos with ‘Hama Governorate‘ geotags taken near a village of Deir Shamil. A newspaper in Arabic with a photo of ‘great leader’ with Syrian landscape in background draws our attention. Another photo from Hama province with his brother-in-arms is also available.

1.2 At the moment of the article preparation Aleksei was still uploading fresh photos from Syria – you can find them here and here (the exact location is not known). More soldier were identified thanks to these pictures. We will talk about them later.

1.3 As for the connection to Hmeimim airbase area, the most interesting points here are the international passport with the personal information about the serviceman (20 #0447899, issued in Sverdlov Oblast, etc) and the cover of special service passport (which is given to the Russian soldiers when they serve outside Russia). We think that thanks to this passport’s data it is possible to find this soldier and even take an interview.

1.4 There is another point about the assignment. Aleksei went to Syria around October 3-4 (the group photo named ‘Flying away’). And now on November 9, a month later, another photo named ‘Home’ was uploaded. We can assume that at least some of those soldier went home on a short vacation.

1.5 According to Volkov’s old photos, he served in the Internal troops in 2013-2014 (photo 1, photo 2, photo 3). But in 2015 he poses in the uniform of the Russian army (photos from Yekaterinburg)

The Central Military District’s badge can be clearly seen in this selfie. We are still working on identification of the military unit, but for now we think it is the 28th separate motorized rifle brigade (military unit No. 61423). There are several pictures made in Chapaeva, Shcherbakova and Stepan Razin streets (servicemen were walking there and shopping before departure) and this is close to the 32nd garrison town (the 28th brigade).

The second soldier is Vyacheslav Sergeevich Razin (born in Perm on October 17, 1991) also from Yekaterinburg. He served in the Internal troops (military unit No. 7459) as well. Starting at least from May of 2015 Vyacheslav is a contract serviceman – see here or here.

Now Razin is in Syria – take a look at the photo where he wears the desert camouflage. Thanks to the identical pictures we found out that Razin belongs to the same unit as Volkov (compare these photos). He has also some juicy information about the equipment and everyday life of the Russian military.

2.3 Here we have a picture of how the soldiers spend their free time. Anyway it is good the servicemen feast their eyes on the beautiful ladies and not Putin. And this is the group leisure (with posters of a man looking like al-Assad). …maps and ammunition… The Syrians should pay attention to the mocking inscription ‘from Perm with love

The third soldier identified on the group ‘Syrian’ photo was a soldier with nick name ‘Tolyan Dimkovich’ from Yekaterinburg. There is no much information about him, his blog misses data on his ‘Syrian assignment’ – only the photos from the army service in Russia are available:

And this is the video clip of the combat actions in Latakia. The rebels captured the new Russian helmet and new ‘Ratnik’ [Warrior] bulletproof vest which is in service of the Russian army only. No insignia, of course. In general, it looks the same as with the ‘men in green’ in Crimea. The only difference – they were met here with machine-gun bursts.

What the Russians failed to realize in their "great victory over terrorists" is that the IS have some great strategists and tacticians on the ground and in Iraq often pull back under heavy regime attacks to come out fighting a few weeks later over running their original target and driving security forces away.

Regardless of what many in the western MSM think IS can and does fight well.

The Syrian regime and its allies reestablished a ground line of communication (GLOC) to the hitherto-besieged Kuweires Airbase east of Aleppo City in their first significant victory since the start of the Russian air campaign in Syria on September 30. Activist sources and Syrian state television reported that an advance party of regime forces established contact with several hundred Syrian Army soldiers besieged by ISIS in Kuweires Airbase on November 10 after seizing the adjacent village of Kuweires al-Sharqi. Clashes are reportedly ongoing as newly-arrived regime reinforcements attempt to expand the base’s defensive perimeter. The advance marks the culmination of one component of a multi-pronged offensive which began on October 15. The success of the operation relied heavily upon Russian air support as well as reinforcement from hundreds of Iranian-backed proxy fighters. U.S. officials previously reported in mid-October that up to 2,000 Iranian, Hezbollah, and Iraqi Shi’a militia fighters had massed southeast of Aleppo City in order to participate in ongoing offensives targeting Kuweires Airbase as well as rebel-held terrain in the southern Aleppo countryside. The successful relief of the regime forces trapped in Kuweires Airbase will provide a powerful morale boost to the military forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The operation constitutes a much-needed symbolic victory for the Syrian regime following major territorial losses in the first half of 2015 as well as an initial lack of significant progress following the Russian intervention. The rescue of several hundred Syrian Army soldiers who have been besieged since December 2012 will tamper simmering discontent regarding his conduct of the Syrian Civil War. Alawite populations along the Syrian Coast – a core base of popular support for the Syrian regime – organized several protests this summer criticizing the government for failing to relieve Kuweires Airbase and other besieged pro-regime enclaves in northern Syria. The Syrian regime’s operational intent following the offensive to secure Kuweires Airbase remains unclear. Kuweires Airbase provides no tangible benefit to the Syrian Air Force, which maintains a well-defended and functional airfield at the Aleppo International Airport thirty kilometers to the west. The position of the base itself, however, provides a potential staging ground for regime forces to conduct follow-on operations that challenge ISIS’s presence in eastern Aleppo Province. A continued presence in Kuweires Airbase could allow the Syrian regime to contest ISIS-held terrain on the eastern outskirts of Aleppo City as well as critical ISIS supply lines connecting ar-Raqqa City to the Turkish border. Claims that the elite Syrian Army ‘Tiger Forces’ will soon redeploy from Kuweires to Hama Province nevertheless suggest that the Syrian regime does not intend to use the airfield as a launch pad for major offensive operations in the near-future. The base also remains vulnerable to an ISIS counterattack unless regime forces can seize additional terrain to provide their salient with defense-in-depth. Alternatively, the Syrian regime may intend to withdraw from Kuweires Airbase after securing safe passage for the exfiltration of the base’s garrison. A withdrawal from the airfield would free significant amounts of manpower, equipment, and aerial resupply assets for use on other fronts. The advances east of Aleppo City nonetheless do little to change the immediate strategic outlook for President Assad. Pro-regime forces have thus far achieved only tactical gains throughout other parts of northwestern Syria despite expanded support from Russia and Iran. Meanwhile, rebel forces seized the operationally-significant town of Morek along the strategic M5 Highway on November 5 as part of a new offensive threatening regime-held Hama City. ISIS also continues to pressure key supply lines for the Syrian regime in both Homs and Aleppo Provinces. Activists reported that ISIS deployed a convoy of at least forty vehicles from ar-Raqqa City to eastern Aleppo Province on November 9 in a likely response to the imminent fall of Kuweires Airbase. These challenges suggest that the Syrian regime and its allies will struggle to translate symbolic gains into enduring operational success.

Is Russia working on a massive dirty bomb?


On November 10, 2015 President Putin held a regular meeting with his generals in Sochi to discuss development of the Russian strategic forces. The president used the occasion to complain again about U.S. missile defense plans and to warn that Russia will do whatever it takes to preserve the strategic balance.

But that was not the most interesting part of the news story. One sharp observer (MJ) noticed that the camera took a peek at one of the documents prepared for the meetings (it is at 1:46 in the news story). It showed a summary of one of the projects that presumably were discussed at the meeting as part of the plan to restore that strategic balance that the U.S. missile defense system so blatantly undermines.

The project is called "Ocean Multipurpose System 'Status-6'" with the TsKB MT Rubin design bureau listed as the lead developer (Rubin is the design bureau that built virtually all submarines that are currently in service). A brief paragraph describes the mission of the proposed system as follows:

Damaging the important components of the adversary's economy in a coastal area and inflicting unacceptable damage to a country's territory by creating areas of wide radioactive contamination that would be unsuitable for military, economic, or other activity for long periods of time.

The picture that follows shows that at the core of the weapon system is an underwater autonomous drone ("self-propelled underwater craft" or SPA), which could be delivered by one of the two submarines - Project 09852 or Project 09851. For some reason, the drone is shown as attached to the bottom of the 09852 submarine, but not to the 09851. Te text is hard to read, but it appears that Project 09852 submarine will carry four drones and Project 09852 - either 3 or 6. Given that 09852 is a smaller submarine (its displacement is shown as "10000 t" vs. what looks like a larger number for 09852), it's probably 3. It certainly does not look like "1", although "2" is a possibility.

Interestingly, these two submarines are relatively recent projects. Project 09852 was laid down at Sevmash in December 2012. It is said to use the hull of the Belgorod submarine of the Project 949A/Oscar II class. The first Project 09851 submarine, Khabarovsk, was laid down in July 2014. (Project 09851 was also mentioned in the R&D known as Kalitka-SMP.)

Again, the text is barely legible, but it appears that the drone would be able to travel at the depth of up to 1000 m at a fairly high speed (something like 105 km/h?). The range appears to be listed as 10000 km, which is a bit hard to believe, but this is what the slide says. The diameter ("caliber") of the drone appears to be more than 1 meter (probably 1.6 m), the general's hand hides the length of the device.

The drone appears to be nuclear-powered - the fourth compartment is marked "Reactor module". This would explain the range, I guess, although it would need some guidance system to find its way around.

Further down the list, there is a drawing of the system's components - command and control, support ships (non-nuclear submarine "Sarov" and some surface ship - Zvezdochka rescue ship I'm told), and something else that we cannot see.

Finally, the timeline at the bottom of the slide says that pilot system will be built by 2019, so the state tests can be conducted in 2019-2020.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. First, it's an interesting security lapse. I know that quite a few people believe that the leak was intentional, but I don't think it's the case. Indeed, as I understand, the news organizations quickly removed the clip from their sites. On the other hand, Bill Getz did have a story about Russian underwater drone, Kanyon, two months ago. The name is different, but it appears to be more or less the system Gertz's Pentagon sources described. So, maybe Moscow decided that the leak would not be such a big deal. Still, they would have probably preferred to keep some details out of it.

As for the project itself, Russia is not the only country that is working on underwater drones. But the payload looks like a massive "dirty bomb", which strikes me as absolutely crazy. A number of people noted that the description does not necessarily exclude the possibility that the initial "damaging" can be done by a regular nuclear device. Which only makes this whole thing even more insane - do they think that a nuclear weapon on its own would not inflict "unacceptable damage"?

I have my own opinions of whether we even need JTACs as that was and is an AF program to give them some influence on the battlefield as a combat arms unit.

That though is another issue..............

I posted a short comment here a few days ago of a photo of a SDF member who had a targeting iPad----basically what the JTACs themselves carry---so it looks like even the SDF call strikes if need be---but am assuming the SF team can establish the radio calls to the strike air craft.

I have my own opinion of whether we even need JTACs which was the AF attempt to get into the war on terror but that is another discussion all together.

I posted a comment here a few days ago of a SDF member holding what the JTAC himself carries a targeting iPad which would allow him to call for a strike.

Assume though that the direction of air strikes will remain in SF control due to the need for English---possible the iPad will be used for recon missions to note locations of potential targets.

Activist Says Russia Using 'Hybrid Warfare' In Syria

The CIT report CIT says three serving or former Russian soldiers had been geolocated by photographs on social media in Syria, including locations near Hama, Aleppo, and Homs.

The head of a team of Russian cybersleuths, who have uncovered what they argue is a much more robust Russian military role in Syria than officially claimed, says the Kremlin seems to be following the "hybrid warfare" playbook perfected in eastern Ukraine.

Activists from the Moscow-based Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) said in a report released on November 8 that Russia's military is taking an active role in ground operations of the Syrian army's fight against the opposition, contradicting Kremlin claims that its intervention is limited to air strikes and providing military advisers and equipment.

Ruslan Leviev, who heads CIT, said the scenario is similar to the one the Kremlin used in eastern Ukraine, where Russia has been accused of directly backing separatists fighting Ukrainian forces with arms, weapons, and regular troops, while admitting only that Russian volunteers were taking part.

"There is the 'official part' which no one denies: In Syria it is the bombing campaign; in Ukraine it was the 'volunteers'," Leviev explained in an interview with RFE/RL's Russian Service. "Then there is the 'unofficial part', which the authorities vehemently deny, but which is obvious: the participation (of Russian forces) in ground operations, the deployment of various heavy weapons. It's this type of "hybrid warfare," where there is the official, open part, and the hidden, unofficial part," Leviev said.

Russia's deployment to Syria -- its largest outside the former Soviet Union in two decades -- has included advanced fighter jets, antiaircraft missile systems, tanks, and armored-personnel carriers.

But much of the Russian weaponry has been positioned -- officially anyway -- at the Latakia air base in western Syria.

Russia first launched air strikes to support President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's four-year civil war on September 30, but has repeatedly stated it has no intention of launching a ground offensive.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has refused to comment on the CIT finding, the latest to leave the Kremlin squirming.

In the past, CIT has used its social-media investigative skills to uncover information about Russian military deaths in Ukraine. In late October, CIT was first to report the first confirmed death of a Russian soldier in Syria.

In its latest report, CIT said three serving or former Russian soldiers had been geolocated by photographs on social media in Syria, including locations near Hama, Aleppo, and Homs.

Russia's military jets are based at the base in Latakia, far from where the three men were geolocated.

CIT published screenshots from a social-media account belonging to Ayas Saryg-Ool, a soldier it said served in Russia's 74th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, and from an account belonging to Vladimir Boldyrev, who it suggested was a Russian marine from the 810th Separate Marine Brigade.

It showed both of them had recently posted pictures with geolocation tags in Hama Province. Saryg-Ool's page, which had previously shown him posing with a heavy machine gun and in the cab of what CIT said was an artillery tow truck, was not available as of November 8, the same day CIT issued its report.

CIT also published screenshots from the Instagram page of Ilya Gorelykh, who it said had served in Russia's GRU special forces in the past.

In late October it showed he had uploaded pictures from Aleppo, one of which showed him holding an assault rifle while wearing civilian clothes. Another image of him posing in camouflage with three other armed men was apparently taken in Homs.

The pictures were not available on his account on November 8.

The CIT report follows statements by U.S. security officials and independent experts on November 4 to the Reuters news agency that Russia's military force in Syria has doubled to 4,000 troops.

Leviev told RFE/RL's Russian Service that the growing number of Russian military personnel was being deployed beyond the air base in Latakia, in small groups numbering between 20 and 30.

"It's obvious, the contingent is being increased at other places as well -- for example, the air base in Hama, where, as we've seen, there's been an increase in Russian military jets. All of this is still officially dismissed and denied," Leviev explained.

"We are seeing that our columns of military hardware and soldiers are appearing more and more in those provinces in Syria where [Russia], in principle, should not be very close to sites where heavy fighting is taking place. We've sighted our soldiers and our military hardware in the cities of Hama, Homs, Aleppo, those parts of Latakia Province, where heavy fighting is taking place," Leviev told RFE/RL.

The CIT report seems to reinforce statements by a top U.S. State Department official that Russia had deployed heavy artillery and other ground forces near Homs and Hama.

Victoria Nuland, assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, also said Moscow's air campaign in Syria was costing between $2 million and $4 million a day. She described the effort, which has reportedly hit civilian areas, as immoral.

While Moscow insists it is hitting Islamic State group targets, U.S. officials said on November 4 that up to 90 percent of Russia's targets have, in fact, been moderate Syrian rebel groups -- including some that have been trained and supplied weaponry by the United States.

Sectarian Disaster Looms as ISIS Strikes at the Heart of Hezbollah


If Hezbollah thought it would be protected after the Iran nuclear deal, it must think again after twin bomb strike in Beirut.

BEIRUT—While world leaders are travelling to Vienna to discuss a political solution in Syria, two explosions ripped through the Beirut’s southern Dahiyeh suburbs, leaving at least 43 people dead and over 239 others injured in the bloodiest terror attack to hit Lebanon's capital since the end of the civil war in 1990.

Hours after the blast, an alleged ISIS claim of responsibility for the attack circulated on social media, saying that 40 “rafideen”—a pejorative term for Shiite Muslims used by Sunni Islamists—were killed in the “security operation.”

ISIS and Hezbollah haven’t been in direct confrontation in Syria. Except for one clash earlier this year near the Lebanese border, the so-called Islamic State has never gone into battle with “the Party of God.” The Lebanese feared that ISIS claiming responsibility for the explosion in Beirut could be the beginning of a bloody new era.

The explosions targeted a Shiite area, and the message behind the explosion was obviously a message for Hezbollah, which has been militarily involved in Syria for more than four years. However, this was not a warning per se as much as it was a declaration of war. At the surface, ISIS told Hezbollah that its involvement in Syria has a high price in Lebanon. But on a deeper level, ISIS told everyone involved in discussing the peace process in Vienna that war is the only option, and that the international community cannot give Iran and Hezbollah any guarantees in Syria, Lebanon, or the region as a whole.

Hezbollah had already chosen war, but the U.S. nuclear deal with Iran gave them the impression that they would be allowed to intervene in Syria unchecked. This is not necessarily wrong, but some regional powers, including Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, do not agree.

Fidaa Itani, an expert on Syria, told the Daily Beast that ISIS wanted to show Hezbollah that its illusion of power could collapse any minute. “ISIS has basically shattered any guarantee Hezbollah might have received from the international community in its war in Syria,” he said. “Hezbollah understands now that it cannot be protected at home no matter what political solution is reached and despite any guarantees Iran could have achieved.”

ISIS has demonstrated to the Shiites and the rest of Lebanon that Hezbollah cannot protect them, and that its “tight” security plan in the southern suburbs of Beirut is a fantasy.

ISIS also knew this explosion would increase the hatred rhetoric and attacks against Syrian refugees by angry Shiites. Hezbollah has already issued a communique among its supporters, asking them not to gather in public places for fear of further suicide-bomb attacks in southern Beirut, but the most dangerous part of their message appealed for “citizens to look for anyone who looks suspicious and not to let them go.”
As expected, social media and the streets were loaded with sectarian hatred Friday. Shiite and Sunni tensions in Lebanon were already on the rise after Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria’s war.

Hezbollah will attempt to take advantage of Shiite anger to recruit much-needed fighters. And ISIS will do the same—they may feel that Lebanese Sunnis are a potential pool of fighters. The deteriorating economic situation in Lebanon, has made young men particularly susceptible to recruitment.

The war is obviously stretching beyond Syria, and diplomatic solutions for Syria that disregard the Sunnis and Shiites of Iraq and Lebanon will not work. These explosions should be seen as a warning for the international community—the Iran deal does not automatically make just Shiites strategic allies of the West; Sunnis are also needed in the fight against ISIS.

Historically, Hezbollah has never reacted rationally to bombings in its areas; it only understands the language of power and violence. Hezbollah might be expected to retaliate by bombing Sunni areas in Lebanon or by assassinating opponents—politicians, diplomats, journalists and public figures are all in danger now. Hezbollah can always blame ISIS, as they used to blame the Israelis for all terrorists acts against Lebanese. Whatever they say in public; the message will be received.

Will this stop the vicious circle of violence? Probably not. More bombings and assassinations will lead to similar reactions, and more sectarian tension and clashes. The only way out is for Hezbollah to leave Syria. But of course that is not going to happen, no matter how many more Shiites or Lebanese die.

Hezbollah will use and hide behind the Lebanese military and security institutions to protect itself in Lebanon. It will stay in Syria until Iran gets what it wants; that is power over the corridor that links the Syria Alawite coast to Lebanon’s borders. Even then, Hezbollah will have to stay in Syria to protect it. Any political solution that does not recognize this will not be accepted by Iran, and Vienna talks will not reach any solution as long as Iran is at the table making sure nothing else works.

In Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, war will intensify and more people will die, while messages like Thursday night’s will be bloody and plentiful. Until Iran’s hand in Syria is tied, and the Sunnis are given some kind of victory, such as the removal of Assad, both Hezbollah and ISIS will grow in power and hostility.

Russia’s direct intervention in the Syrian crisis has attracted a great deal of attention. A detailed analysis of the actual scope of the Russian military deployment in Syria indicates Moscow’s level of commitment to the conflict

This article uses a number of sources to provide a detailed account of the forces Moscow has committed to its operations in Syria. Coverage of the conflict by Russian state media currently provides many opportunities to identify specific elements participating in the Kremlin’s Syrian enterprise. For instance, broad coverage of Russian air operations allows the identification of nearly every plane the Kremlin has sent to Syria. These data have been cross-referenced with data available from earlier Russian publications (including specialist forums and social networks), making it possible to find and confirm the military units from which corresponding pieces of military equipment originate. The manpower of Russian forces has also been estimated by applying information on the standard structures of Russian military units to those units identified as being present in Syria.

The results suggest that the overall manpower of what could be called the Russian Expeditionary Corps in Syria has increased recently by approximately 25–35 per cent and can be currently estimated as between 3,500–4,100. This estimate excludes the crews of naval and cargo ships, and the transport aircraft involved in logistical support for the Russian combat forces in country. The list of Russian units and force elements involved in the Syrian operation, as well as hardware identified or estimated on the basis of the current study, is presented below.

Land Forces

The land forces committed to Russia’s Syrian operation include:
•A battalion tactical group of the 810th Marines Brigade (Sevastopol) which consists of the 542nd Marines Assault Battalion and the brigade’s command and control elements – approximately 580 men
•162nd Separate Reconnaissance Battalion of the 7th Guards Air Assault Division (Novorossiysk) – approximately 320 men
•Reconnaissance battalion of the 74th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade (Yurga, Siberia) – approximately 440 men
•A battalion tactical group of the 27th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade (Moscow) consisting of two motor-rifle companies reinforced by one tank company – approximately 300 men
•One Spetsnaz battalion probably of the 3rd Spetsnaz Brigade (Tolyatti, Saratov Province); it is possible that this battalion originates from the 22nd Guards Spetsnaz Brigade (Rostov-upon-Don) – 230 men
•A sniper team of the ‘Senezh’ Brigade, SOF Command (Solnechnogorsk, Moscow Province) – unidentified number of men
•Six 2A65 Msta-B towed howitzers from the howitzer battery of the 8th Artillery Regiment (Simferopol, Crimea) – seventy men
•Eighteen 2A65 Msta-B howitzers from the howitzer battalion of the 120th Artillery Brigade (Kemerovo, Siberia) – 270 men
•Four 9A52 Smerch vehicles forming two MLRS batteries which might originate from the 439th Guards Rocket Artillery Brigade (Znamensk, Astrakhan Province) – 50–60 men
•Six TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy flamethrower vehicles from one heavy flamethrower company of the 20th NRBC regiment (Nizhniy Novgorod) – thirty men
•An electronic-warfare (EW) company with six R-330B UHF jamming stations, three R-378B HF jamming stations and six 1L29 SPR-2 Rtut-B radio-proximity-fuse jamming/initiation stations, most probably from the 64th Motor Rifle Brigade (Khabarovsk) – approximately sixty men
•A long-range jamming (EW) company most likely of the 17th EW Brigade (Nizhneudinsk, Irkutsk Province) with one set (two vehicles) of 1RL257 Krasukha-4 aviation fire-control radar-jamming stations – approximately twenty men.

The overall size of the Russian force’s land component in Syria appears to be approximately 2,400 men. There are signs that Russian artillery assets are already involved on an ad hoc basis in providing fire support for the Syrian army 4th Assault Corps’ operations near Aleppo and there are some reports of Russian artillery fire near Homs and Hama.

Air-Forces

The air-forces elements committed in Syria include:
•Four Su-30SM heavy fighters of the 120th Mixed Air Regiment (Domna air base, Chita; all four aircraft positively identified with tail numbers ‘26, 27, 28, 29 red’)
•Four Su-34 bombers of the 47th Mixed Air Regiment (Buturlinovka, Voronezh Province; all four aircraft positively identified with tail numbers ‘21, 22, 25, 27 red’)
•Potentially between twenty-four and thirty Su-24M and Su-24M2 bombers (equivalent to the Tornado-GR) originating from the 2nd Guards Bomber Regiment (Shagol air base, Chelyabinsk; seven aircraft positively identified with tail numbers ‘04, 05, 08, 16, 25, 26, 27 white’) and 277th Bomber Regiment (Khurba air base, Komsomolsk-upon-Amur; five aircraft positively identified with tail numbers ‘71, 72, 74, 75, 76 white’)
•Ten Su-25SM attack aircraft and two Su-25UB combat trainers of the 960th Attack Air Regiment (Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Province; all twelve aircraft positively identified – Su-25SM tail numbers ‘21, 22, 24, 29 red’ in brown-green-blue tri-colour camouflage scheme, and ‘25, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32 red’ in grey livery, and Su-25UB tail numbers ‘44, 53 red’)
•Twelve Mi-24PN gunship helicopters and two Mi-8AMTSh transport – air-support helicopters of the 113th Combat Helicopter Regiment (Novosibirsk; all fourteen helicopters positively identified – Mi-24PN tail numbers ‘03, 13, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 34, 36, 37, 40 yellow’, and Mi-8AMTSh tail numbers ‘212, 252 yellow’)
•Up to eight Mi-28N attack helicopters – most probably originating from the 2nd Squadron, 487th Helicopter Regiment (Budenovsk, Stavropol Province)
•One Il-22M airborne command post/relay aircraft (registration number RA 75917) from the 144th AWACS Regiment (Ivanovo)
•One or two Il-20M signals intelligence/jamming aircraft (tail numbers are not yet identified) of the 257th Mixed Air Regiment (Khabarovsk); there are some unconfirmed reports that one Il-20M aircraft has been operating from the Al-Takaddum air base near Baghdad in Iraq which might be one of the two aircraft deployed by the Russian Air-Space Forces to Syria
•Six 96K6 Pantsyr-S1 (SA-22) vehicles forming one air-defence battery with logistics elements, probably originating from the 1537th Air Defence Regiment (Novorossiysk) – approximately ninety-five men
•Airfield-logistics battalion – 360–80 men
•Airfield-logistics company (helicopter) – 90–110 men
•Communications and air-traffic-control battalion – 240–70 men.

The overall manpower of the Russian air component in Syria appears to be 1,200–350 men, including 150–80 pilots, 280 aviation technicians, 690–760 men in aviation support and around 100 men in the air-defence battery. Air-traffic-control hardware and airfield support elements recently spotted aboard Russian ships in the Bosporus heading for Syria suggest that the Russian command might be considering the establishment of another air base in addition to the main Khmeimim air base which is adjacent to Bassel Al-Assad international airport. Although the majority of Russian air strikes originated from Khmeimim until recently, Il-20M, Il-22M and Mi-28 helicopters never used it as their operational base. However, there have been independent reports from both Russian and foreign sources referring to the presence of the Russian Il-20/Il-22 and Mi-28 in Syria. So these planes and helicopters most probably operate from unidentified alternative bases.

Elements of the air component started arriving in Syria in the second half of September and immediately began reconnaissance and familiarisation flights over Syria. It is noteworthy that during that period and until approximately 7 October, after the Russian deployment had been officially announced and Russian air strikes had begun, Russian aircraft flew with their national insignia painted over. This changed after 7 October when Russian insignia were restored on the combat jets. Meanwhile Russian helicopters continue to fly over Syria without any national insignia. A single Mi-8AMTSh ‘212 red’ is the only helicopter carrying the Russian ’Red Star’ insignia, thus being an exception to an otherwise common practice.

From my "armchair" this appears to be an almost random collection of small units, who may not have worked together before. Plus many are from Siberia.

While it appears to be a disjointed group of small units--there is something interesting that was practiced by the Russian military inside eastern Ukraine.

The units in Syria similar to the units in eastern Ukraine come from their top trained units designated as wartime units who are the first to deploy--since they are the most highly trained-ie the Airborne unit and the SOF and Spetsnaz units.

The Russian units listed are in fact the exact same combat units who had fought in eastern Ukraine thus they are bringing their combat experience into Syria.

We should start seeing these initial units swapped out at about the fourth month which is what Russia did in the Ukraine as the Ru MoD will attempt to keep down their combat loses which they have already had--this rotation concept also keeps the loses down in the mother units the small units come from.

Thirdly, the Russian MoD is practicing an interesting doctrinal concept of small "tactical" units that form up and then break down depending on the mission set--something they also have been exercising in eastern Ukraine.

Russia is using both the eastern Ukraine and Syria to shake out their doctrine and gain combat experience across a large number of smaller units that will feed back into the mother units.

To me that now seems like a short-sighted strategy that will undermine our national interests in the long run. Is there an assumption Assad and Russia will stop killing innocent Syrians that have nothing to do with ISIL?

Fully agree. People seem to have given up on the "moderate" units in the FSyA, yet they represent the only viable alternative among Sunnis to the Islamic State. If the US makes the tragic decision to join a Russian/Shia coalition, they will be entering a religious war that will make Iraq's sectarian violence seem a skirmish in comparison.

The ex-Ba'athists are the ones that need to be brought in from the cold, in order to provide Iraq's Sunnis with an alternative to Shia militias and IS.

My admittedly casual understanding is that the Daesh possess fairly solid electronic warfare capabilities. Seems a stretch to suggest that it was gifted to them by Snowden.

I don't know ES personally or anything, but in every interview I have seen with him he comes across as an earnest libertarian. I honestly do not get the impression that he put his career and life on the line in order to tell terrorists they need to encrypt their data. It was something more along the lines of trying to get across to Americans that the U.S. Intelligence Community was, like the Stasi, monitoring its citizens for their own good, but with a vastly more powerful apparatus.

Whether through war or diplomacy, Russia and Iran have been trying to finish off Ahrar al-Sham, a Saudi-sponsored Syrian rebel group that has shown resolve and resilience in fighting forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad. The group has threatened Assad’s survival and has so far proven to be an obstacle in the face of the Russo-Iranian military campaign aimed at reviving the Syrian dictatorship.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have asked for a list of “US-approved” Syrian opposition militias, presumably to spare them Russian airstrikes. Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif has called on the Vienna Conference to identify terrorist groups in Syria.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian war, Washington has placed two armed groups on its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations: ISIS and the Al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra. As with its foreign policy in general, Washington’s position on Ahrar has been murky. By calling on Washington to spell out its position on Ahrar, Moscow and Tehran hope to build international consensus that the group is terrorist and should be defeated, as a prerequisite for a political solution in Syria.

Russia and Iran have consistently tried to connect Syrian rebels to terrorism, believing such a designation gives Assad a green light to eliminate them brutally. Russia, Iran and Assad believe that painting groups as terrorist might also make them toxic to their foreign sponsors.

Iran has also cited foreign sponsorship as proof of terrorism in Syrian rebel groups. Because Turkey’s government is Islamist, and because Qatar leans toward Islamists across the region, Iran has found it easy to shout Islamism, and therefore terrorism, against any Syrian opposition group with ties to either Turkey or Qatar.

Saudi Arabia has been a harder nut to crack. Riyadh has been at the forefront of combating terrorism in the region since at least 9/11. Unlike Turks and Qataris, who sided with the Islamists in Egypt, Saudi Arabia opposed Cairo’s Islamist government. As an alternative, Iranian propaganda tried to connect ‘radical Saudi Muslim teachings’ and ISIS.

But Iranian propaganda has failed. ISIS is an Iraqi organization whose leaders have inherited Saddam’s hatred of Saudi Arabia. And like Al-Qaeda, ISIS has launched attacks inside the kingdom.

Russia, for its part, arranged for Assad’s security chief, Ali Mamlouk, to visit Saudi Arabia on the premise that if Riyadh wanted to undermine Iranian influence in Syria, Mamlouk could offer such guarantees. Instead of extending such an offer, Mamlouk tried to spin the story of his Saudi meetings in the media in a bid to undermine confidence between Syrian rebel groups and Saudi Arabia.

When Russia and Iran saw it was impossible to outmaneuver the Saudis on Ahrar, Russia launched a direct military assault against the group, while Iranian propaganda went after the Saudi royal family, judging by speeches of Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and the “Death to Al Saud” chants of his supporters.

But Ahrar surprised Russia with its military performance. Meanwhile, the Saudis responded to the Vienna effort of designating Ahrar terrorist by doubling down on their military support of the Syrian group. The solution in Syria, implied Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, would not be a political settlement. “Assad will leave, whether through politics or military action,” he told reporters.

Saudi’s holding onto Syrian non-Islamist rebels like Ahrar prompted Iranians to threaten to withdraw from the Vienna meetings. Statements from unidentified senior Iranian officials in the Wall Street Journal threatened an Iranian boycott of Vienna and were especially offensive toward Saudi Arabia, echoing Nasrallah’s tone.

Russia and Iran want to help Assad beat his opponents, terrorist or not. Saudi Arabia has skillfully identified and sponsored moderate Syrian rebels who threaten Assad’s survival. Aside from Iraqi ISIS, which controls Syrian territory mostly east of the Euphrates, the war in Syria is between Assad and Ahrar. Russia and Iran are trying to enlist the US, via Vienna, to vilify Ahrar as a move towards destroying it, undermining Saudi influence in Syria and finishing off the moderate Syrian opposition.

Saudis and Americans are aware of the Russo-Iranian plan. President Obama, however, would not mind seeing Assad prevail, were it not for the Saudis, who have used their weight to neutralize America on Syria, a step that has proven adequate given Washington’s endlessly amateurish foreign policy.

Russia Calls on NATO to ' Change Priorities ' After Paris Attacks16:51 (GMT)


NATO must change its priorities after the terrorist attack in Paris, Sergei Ryabkov, deputy foreign minister told reporters in Ankara yesterday, according to Novaya Gazeta and RIA Novosti (translation by The Interpreter):

We hope that the events in Paris will likely put everything in its place and somewhat change the scale of priorities of our colleagues in Washington and other NATO capitals.

Russia has repeatedly criticized Western leaders for supporting moderate rebels and advocating the removal of President Bashar al-Assad, deflecting any criticism from the US and EU about Moscow's failure to actually target ISIS since bomb strikes were begun September 30.

President Barack Obama met with Vladimir Putin on the margins of the G20 summit yesterday. The Russia's Rossiya 24 TV channel characterized the meeting as "20 minutes" with translators only; RT said it was "more than 30 minutes" and the US media said it was "35 minutes."

NBC reported that the two leaders "could be seen in an intense huddle" and noted a White House statement:

"President Obama and President Putin agreed on the need for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition, which would be proceeded by UN-mediated negotiations between the Syrian opposition and regime as well a ceasefire," a White House official said.

"As the diplomacy continues, President Obama welcomed efforts by all nations to confront the terrorist group (ISIS) and noted the importance of Russia's military efforts in Syria focusing on the group."

Putin showed satellite images and other photos to world leaders today, claiming wide-scale sale of oil by ISIS fighters for a monthly revenue of $50 million, citing Iraqi intelligence that the oil is sold for $35 a barrel or as low as $10 a barrel, RBC reported.

He said some of the financing for ISIS was coming from G20 countries and joint efforts through a UN Security Council resolution had to be made to cut off the flow of funds


In a statement to the press today in Ankara, Putin said Russia needs the world's support for combating ISIS:

"We very much need that assistance and support on the part of the United States, European countries, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran in order to make the process irreversible."


RIA Novosti published an infographic today of the war in Syria saying ISIS numbered from 50,000 to 200,000, with 5,000-7,000 of its fighters estimated to have come from Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union.

It also claimed that $2.3 million a day (about $70 million a month) was made from speculation of oil sales on the black market, significantly more than the $50 million Putin indicated in his statement; that 3,153 people had suffered from terrorist act committed by ISIS and "armed conflicts of the army with radical groups," including 1,466 who had been killed and 1,687 were wounded.

More than 200,000 civilians had been killed since the start of the conflict in 2011, but RIA Novosti failed to explain that its ally Assad was responsible for most of these deaths.

After the terrorist attacks on Paris Friday night November 13, Russia was the first to report that ISIS had taken responsibility for the attacks, although not providing any details, and blamed the West for fueling ISIS.

How ISIS Picks Its Suicide Bombers


They come from Russia, France—even New Jersey—to end their lives for an ‘Islamic State.’ But an ISIS defector reveals that Saddam’s old spies are the ones holding all the triggers.

For all the attention paid to ISIS, relatively little is known about its inner workings. But a man claiming to be a member of the so-called Islamic State’s security services has stepped forward to provide that inside view. This series is based on days of interviews with this ISIS spy. Read part one here.

Part Two: Spies Like ISIS

ISTANBUL — “Suicide bomber is a choice,” said the man we’ll call Abu Khaled, stubbing out a Marlboro Red and lighting a new one. “When you join ISIS, during the clerical classes, they ask: ‘Who will be a martyr?’ People raise their hands, and they go off to a separate group.”

The number of recruits is declining, the former ISIS intelligence officer and trainer had told me here, on the shores of the Bosporus. But, at least in those indoctrination classes, there’s no want of young men looking for a quick trip to Paradise. “They keep volunteering,” said Abu Khaled.

In the wide world outside al-Dawla al-Islamiya, the Islamic State, we have caught occasional glimpses of these incendiary young zealots. There was, for instance, Jake Bilardi, a disaffected Australian 18-year-old, who, judging by the blog he left while still in Melbourne, made a rather seamless transition from Chomskyism to takfirism, before detonating himself at a checkpoint in Iraq.

Abu Abdullah al-Australi, as he went to his death in Ramadi, was convinced that he was carrying out a noble act of self-sacrifice, turning kamikaze for the caliphate. For him, jihad began at home. “The turning point in my ideological development,” he’d written, coincided with the “beginning of my complete hatred and opposition to the entire system Australia and the majority of the world was based upon. It was also the moment I realised that violent global revolution was necessary to eliminate this system of governance and that I would likely be killed in this struggle.” He was right about that last part, if not quite about how his fellow revolutionaries determined his use-value.


For pragmatic reasons, ISIS has encouraged homogeneity within the ranks of its katibas, or military battalions, much as the republicans did with their international brigades during the Spanish Civil War. One of the best-trained and best-equipped katibas, or battalions, is named for Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born al Qaeda cleric who was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011. “Everything is in English for this katiba,” Abu Khaled said. “And we have another one with a lot of Americans called Abu Mohammed al-Amiriki. It’s named for a guy from New Jersey. He got killed in Kobani. This katiba also has a lot of foreigners.”

Lately, however, ethnically or linguistically delimited katibas are being dissolved and reconstituted into mixed ones, owing to the unintended consequence of having too many people from one place, or with one language, assembled together. Al-Battar, one of the strongest battalions in the ISIS army, was made up of 750 Libyans. Its men, ISIS found, were more loyal to their emir than they were to the organization. So al-Battar was disbanded.

Not long after joining ISIS, Abu Khaled had intended to found a Francophone katiba of around 70 to 80 fighters who didn’t speak any Arabic. The men drew up a petition and signed it, and Abu Khaled took it to ISIS headquarters in Raqqa. The petition was denied. Why? “They told me, ‘We had a problem before with the Libyans. We don’t want the French in one katiba.’”

Russian speakers, too, are considered rogue troublemakers in al-Dawla. All fighters from the Caucasus or former Soviet republics tend to be referred to by the catch-all word “Chechens.” And while Abu Omar al-Shishani, an ethnic Chechen from Georgia, is one of the most recognized (and overhyped) battlefield commanders in ISIS, “Chechens” are running their own outfits with very little supervision or command-and-control from Raqqa. This has caused heightened vigilance among the Arab or regional jihadists. “I was in Raqqa once, and there was five or six Chechens. They were mad about something. So they came to see the emir of Raqqa. He was so afraid, he ordered ISIS to deploy snipers to the roofs of buildings. He thought the Chechens would attack. The snipers stayed there for two hours.”

ISIS’s heralded end of the artificial borders imposed by European imperial powers has led to the unintended consequence of jihadist imperialism. The ISIS leadership, after all, is mainly Iraqi, and if there is a political, as opposed to religious, objective underlying all its activity, it is the restoration of Sunni power in Baghdad.
