KHABAROVSK, November 17. /TASS/. The United States and its coalition seem to be sparing the Islamic State organisation so that while it weakens Syrian President Bashar Assad, it can never take power in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Vesti.doc programme on Rossiya-1 television on Tuesday.

"The problem around the U.S.-led coalition is that despite the fact that they declared its goal in fighting exclusively the Islamic State and other terrorists and pledged not to take any action against the Syrian army (life has proved they never went back from their words), analysis of the strikes delivered by the United States and its coalition at terrorist positions over the past year drives us to a conclusion that these were selective, I would say sparing, strikes and in the majority of cases spared those Islamic State groups that were capable of pressing the Syrian army," he said.

"It looks like a cat that wants to eat a fish but doesn’t want to wet its feet. They want the Islamic State to weaken Assad as soon as possible to force him to step down this or that way but they don’t want to see Islamic State strong enough to take power."

"Our opinion of the developments after the anti-terrorist operation was launched in August 2014 is based on what we see and we see next to no concrete results but for the expansion of the Islamic State over this time," Lavrov said. "We noted tactical successes when a couple of cities were recaptured in Iraq."

Lavrov stressed that Russia is waging consistent and resolute fight against all those who profess and preach terrorist ideology.

Russia responded to the request of the legitimate Syrian government for military assistance to the Syrian army by airstrikes to stop an offensive action of Islamic State.

"We are doing this consistently and we are not dividing terrorists into those who could help solve some tactical tasks in the hope to end with them later, but are striking out at all who one way or another practice and preach terrorist ideology," the foreign minister said.

"I think ‘laments’ that we heard about ‘Russia striking at wrong targets and causing damage to moderate opposition’ stem from that ambiguity that underlies the activity of the /US-led/ coalition: there is a wish not to let terrorists go on the loose, but not to prevent this in the cases when they can weaken the regime," Lavrov continued.

"Thus all these speculations and unsubstantiated accusations that we all but violate all laws of waging a war, making strikes at civilians," he continued.

Konovalov told TASS.


"It was a major show of strength and a wide range of capabilities the Russian Armed Forces possess for the terrorists and the international community to see," Konovalov said.

He emphasized the political importance of the latest strikes, because they were dealt against targets of the Islamic State, prohibited in Russia as terrorist, in the wake of a report to the president the A321 liner had been lost over Egypt due to a terrorist attack and also as a gesture of support for France’s air strikes against Raqqah.

Virtually all anti-Assad groups cooperate with J Nusra, dispite oaths not to to; J Nusra is now embedded in Syria and poses a long term threat to the West, based on its 15k fighters.
The talks in Vienan are doomed to fail, as none of the Syrian insurgent groups or civil society groups are involved.
Russia understands the complexity of the Syrian civil war, but its actions do not reflect this. In the long term Russia and maybe Iran will support a "rump" Assad state, along a divided Syria; a solution few Syrians today support.

What puzzled me was that in the talk the long running, fifteen year Lebanese Civil War was not mentioned and there it was the Syrian army that imposed a solution - one that remains fragile today.

David----some comments on the points---Lister as well as others never really spent time in Iraq nor does he and others under the actual role of JaN.

In Iraq the equivalent of JaN was the Ansar al Sunnah (AAS)group consisting of Kurds and Arabs and Salafist in nature at the outbreak of the war and later mainly Arabic after heavy Kurdish loses.

AAS had the reputation as fierce fighters, great tactical planners and had the funding stream and connections to first QJBR and then later AQI.

AAS was able and successful at floating between the various Iraqi insurgent groups ---from the Baathists to AQI and in between--eventually AAS was absorbed into the Islamic Army of Iraq.

JaN has taken a similar role in Syria and they are being criticized by many of the FSA for having given their oath to AQ--BUT for whatever the West says about them they have been beating up massively on anything that is IS and have driven them out of a number of areas thus is some ways make a perfect partner of the West as the FSA and the SDF are not troubled at all by JaN.

We need to allow the Syrians to iron out this piece---right now the core problem is that all and I mean all anti Assad forces have one thing in mind-- eliminate Assad THEN we will focus on IS----so actually the removal of Assad might in fact facilitate a far faster refocus of them onto eliminating IS.

In order to do that Russia must stop bombing only them while not a single bomb or missile seems to hit IS at all---which tells me Putin really does not care about eliminating IS.

Not sure who it was who made the following comment here--maybe Robert recently---we need to talk to AQ ie JaN about eliminating IS--but how does the West do that without appearing to be pro AQ.

BTW--JaN has never for a moment uttered a single threat against the US and or any single American and yet declare them "terrorists" due a simple oath--we should start judging these groups on their actions not their words which are often only for internal consumption.

“When I look at the present state of things in the world I realize that Vladimir Putin is the sole defender of Christian civilization one can rely on,” Assad said in an interview with French magazine Valeurs Actuelles.

The Syrian leader also said that he would step down only if asked to by the Syrian people and the Syrian parliament, adding that the issue of his possible resignation had not yet been raised on an international level.

Syria will only share intelligence information with France if Paris changes its policies in the region, President Assad said.

"If the French government is not serious in its fight against terrorism, we will not waste our time collaborating with a country, government or an institution that supports terrorism," he noted in the interview carried out the day after Friday's deadly attacks in Paris.

"You have to first change policy so that it is based on one criteria, to be part of an alliance that joins countries only fighting terrorism and not supporting them," Assad added.

More than 220,000 Syrians have lost their lives in four-and-a-half years of armed conflict, which began with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war.

More than 11 million others have been forced from their homes as forces loyal to President Bashar Assad and those opposed to his rule battle each other — as well as jihadist militants from Islamic State and the al-Nusra Front.

The Paris attacks have helped the West understand that the priority in Syria is to fight ISIS not to topple President Bashar al-Assad, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday, according to Russian agencies.

Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s position that there was no way to solve the Syria crisis peacefully without Assad, who he said represented the interests of a significant part of Syrian society.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem plans to visit Russia on Nov. 25, Sputnik news agency reported on Thursday, citing Syria’s embassy in Moscow.

Walid al-Moualem will visit Russia next week for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about his country’s crisis and the struggle against terrorism, RIA news agency reported on Wednesday.

Coordination with France

Russia’s chief of general staff held talks with his French counterpart on Thursday on combating ISIS in Syria, in the first such contact since the start of the Ukraine conflict last year.

Valery Gerasimov and Pierre de Villiers “discussed on the phone the coordination of military troops’ actions against ISIS terrorists in Syria,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement, adding that the conversation lasted an hour.

The two military chiefs “exchanged their evaluations of the current situation in the country” following calls to unite efforts against ISIS group by presidents Vladimir Putin and Francois Hollande.

“The terrorist acts in Paris and on board of the Russian passenger plane are links of one chain,” Gerasimov was shown by state television as saying on the phone to his French colleague.

“Our grief and our wrath must help join efforts of Russia and France in the fight against international terrorism.”

Putin on Tuesday ordered his navy in the eastern Mediterranean to cooperate with a group of French ships set to arrive in the area Friday and “treat them as allies,” which would be the first such joint operation since World War II.

De Villiers and Jean-Yves Le Drian, the defence minister of NATO member France, had no contact with Russian counterparts since Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in March 2014, according to a French source familiar with the situation.

Moscow and Paris announced close cooperation against the Islamic State group following the bombing of a Russian airliner over Egypt and the attacks in the French capital, which killed 224 and 129 people respectively.

Staunton, November 16 In the wake of the Paris tragedy, Vladimir Putin, Moscow officials and Russian commentators have precisely duplicated “the classical model of behavior of a racketeer,” pointing out to the West that because “you didn’t want to pay, now look how your store is burning to the ground,” according to Ukrainian commentator Igor Yakovenko.

But in this case, he says, the West is being called to “pay” with a different kind of currency. First, in Putin’s view, “the West must reject its own principles and chief among them freedom.” Second, “the West must hand over Ukraine to Putin.” And third, “the West must recognize the division of the world into two zones” one of which is to be governed by Russia.

That may seem like a sweeping conclusion to some, but Yakovenko backs it up with quotations from a wide variety of people in Moscow that suggests if anything he has understated Putin’s idea of a deal. Among them are the following:

· Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that “we hope that the events in Paris will put everything in its place and significantly change the ranking of priorities in Washington and other NATO capitals.”

· Patriarch Kirill’s protégé, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said that after Paris, “the world must forget about tolerance.”

· Sergey Markov, a member of the Russian Civic Chamber, wrote that “it is necessary to end the conflict of Russia and the West as a result of Ukraine. The junta must be replaced by a technical president. The constitution must be changed…the Kyiv junta is one of the main obstacles for the joint struggle of the US, the EU and Russia against terrorism.”

· Igor Karaulov, a poet and commentator, wrote in Izvestiya that “the closing of borders and the introduction of martial law” show the way to the future. If France follows them by electing Marine LePen “and sets up a national French government, based on traditional values, then it will be possible to find some solution of the problems presented by migrants.” Zakhar Prilepin, a writer, seconded that opinion. With LePen in power, “Russia will have a most powerful ally in Europe and then we will talk.”

· The writer Eduard Limonov, also in Izvestiya said that once again Russians are being asked to “save the world.” The costs will be high but not as high as in World War II, hundreds of thousands of dead rather than millions.

· Maksim Shevchenko, a Moscow commentator, immediately after the attacks in Paris focused on the Charlie Hebdo case as a way of suggesting that those who had died in Paris had in large measure brought it upon themselves. TV host Dmitry Kiselyev said much the same thing.

· Moscow political analyst Pavel Svyatenkov was more explicit: he wrote in Izvestiya that “France has sowed the wind and is now reaping the whirlwind.”

· Duma Deputy Irina Yarovaya said on a Sunday talk show that what Russia faces now is “the attack of American anti-democratism” and that just as everyone united against Hitlerism 70 years ago, they will do the same against the American threat.

· Senator Igor Morozov observed that “since the Americans cannot be the guarantor of security, Russia and Europe must establish a unified Europe, the key link of which is Russia.”

· Political analyst Dmitry Kulikov insisted that “our fate is Eurasian” and thus Russia must organize “Eurasian security” to include the countries of the Middle East.

· And orientalist Ruslan Kurbatov said that the news since Paris was good as far as Moscow is concerned: “First, we have seized the initiative from the US, and second, Europe is ready to reach agreement with us.”

As he typically does, Illarionov presents a careful listing of the evidence he has for his conclusion which if true would highlight some of the dangers involved of including Moscow in any alliance to fight international terrorism because such attacks would almost certainly provoke more of it.

Illarionov calls attention to 15 indicators or steps he suggests show that Putin is planning for such attacks:
1.Moscow knew that terrorist shot down the plane over Sinai “at a minimum on the third day after” it occurred.

2.But the Russian authorities did not announce that they knew until “after the conclusion of the G20 summit in Antalya in order to “avoid a practically inevitable discussion in that event of the nature of the possible Russian response to the terrorist action.”

3.However, “in order not to lose time,” Moscow announced that it was a terrorist act as soon as the Antalya summit was over.

4.The FSB immediately then put out details that it had not been prepared to release earlier.

5.Putin said that Russia would do whatever it took “to find and punish the criminals” regardless of when they acted or where they are now.

6.The Kremlin leader said that he had tasked all of Russia’s force structures to come up with a plan that would deal with all those involved.

7.Putin declared that Russia “will act in correspondence with Article 51 of the UN Charter which recognizes the right of states to self-defense,” thus cloaking himself in international law for a possible act on particular states.

8.Already at Antalya, Putin had said that it was necessary to strike at those who “finance terrorist activities,” a group of countries which include Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

9.The FSB announced in an unprecedented move that it was offering a 50 million US dollar reward to anyone who could provide evidence about the terrorist acts and these links, an amount certainly guaranteed to lead some to provide what they see as evidence of Saudi or Qatar complicity.

10.Such attacks would be unthinkable, of course, if the US acted in defense of those countries; but that is unlikely. On the one hand, the US is less dependent on oil from there than it was; and on the other, President Barack Obama, compared to his predecessors, is less willing to act in that way.

11.“The Kremlin’s conviction that the current US Administration is hardly likely to support Saudi Arabia has been essentially strengthened by the refusal of the US and the UK to support not only Saudi Arabia or Ukraine but even France, a member of NATO, in its assessment of the Paris terrorist actions as an act of war and consequently to invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter.”

12.This refusal contrasts sharply with what happened after September 11, 2001, and prompted French President Francois Hollande to go to Moscow and seek an alliance with Putin.

13.“The vigilance of the West has been weakened as well by the changes at first glance of the Kremlin’s course,” including the bombing of ISIS targets in Syria and a more positive stance on restructuring Ukraine’s foreign debt, changes that have been amplified by “a massive propaganda campaign of the Kremlin and the Putinintern.”

14.Consequently, “in the near future, Saudi Arabia (and possibly Qatar) could be declared sponsors of international terrorism and thus one way or another involved in the deaths of hundreds of Russian citizens. Invoking Article 51 of the UN Charger, the Kremlin could carry out an operation of revenge.”

15.The consequences of such attacks on oil prices are obvious, and the refusal of the US and the UK to invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter for the defense of France marks the de facto paralysis of this organization and in essence an open invitation to the carrying out of new aggression against its other members.”

And Iran's game plan doesn't seem likely to change.

The Syrian civil war is treated as a national security issue in Iran and by Iranian media. Media critical of Iran’s involvement in the 4½-year-old conflict typically refrain from controversial coverage of the topic, making it difficult at times to gauge public opinion. In some ways, the Syrian war is treated the same as the nuclear deal was treated under the administration of former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in that there was little discussion or internal debate, particularly in the media. While President Hassan Rouhani’s tenure has brought a relatively robust and sometimes destructive debate on the nuclear issue, the topic of Syria still appears off-limits. This is why the statements of Iranian officials can be revealing and shed light perhaps not on public opinion, but on some of the internal discussions taking place in the military and political leadership.

Mashregh News, a hard-line website believed to be affiliated with Iran's security services, recently published some of the contents of a February speech by Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Brig. Gen. Hossein Hamedani. Hamedani died Oct. 9 in Syria, making him the highest-ranking Iranian general to be killed in the country. Mashregh did not say why the content of the speech had not been published until now, but the sections of the speech chosen for publication suggest an attempt to explain the increasing number of Iranian casualties and involvement in Syria.

Assertions by Hamedani, who had been responsible for organizing the Syrian paramilitary units for a number of years and had only recently returned to Syria for the large-scale offensive, cannot be independently verified and may at times appear as an attempt to frame a costly civil war in a positive light. But the speech reveals what some Iranian officials view as significant transformations and events in the war.

Contrary to most perceptions, Hamedani suggested that the Syrian civil war is actually Iran’s war, saying, “While there are whispers in Iran about why we are paying the costs of Syria,” it is actually the Syrians who are paying the cost of Iran’s war. Hamedani believed the war is actually against the “arrogant” countries, a term Iranian hard-liners use for the United States and other world powers. He added that all Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would have to do is make nice with the United States, and presumably cut relations with Iran, and the war would come to an end.

According to Hamedani, Syria is Iran's buffer zone, and today plays a more significant role for Iran than Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain for a number of reasons, including Syria's shared border with Israel. Many analysts believe Syria also is important because it provides Iran access to the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Hamedani also claimed that before the war, Assad’s Baath Party had put “iron walls” around Iran’s activities in the country. But given the transformations in the country in the past few years, the former secular army that used to punish people for praying now has Syrian generals praying behind the leader of the Quds Force, Cmdr. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, and Syrian soldiers fasting during Ramadan.

Regarding his work organizing the militias, Hamedani said most of them are Sunnis. Iran had organized 42 brigades and 138 battalions, and 30,000 Sunni soldiers were trained in Iran, he said.

Hamedani insisted that Iran only sends advisers to Syria and that they are at the front line under Syrian command, saying relations are so close that Syrians will name their children after the Iranian commanders.

Given the statements by Iranian officials and despite the rising casualties, Iranian officials have not signaled any change in their strategy.

The US-led fight against ISIL has been ineffective if compared with Russia's campaign, a senior Russian official said.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Terrorist act against the Russian A321 passenger jet over Egypt, as well as acts of terrorism in France and other countries make the world understand that the geographical distance from the Islamic State does not guarantee security and the year-long US-led coalition has rendered zero results, unlike the Russian Aerospace Forces operating over Syria, Russian lower house speaker Sergei Naryshkin said Friday.

“The tragedy of the Russian airliner, the terrorist acts in France and a range of other countries are making the entire world look differently at what’s happening and understand that the geographical distance from the Islamic State set on hatred and barbaric cruelty doesn’t guarantee security and the results of the year-long efforts of the so-called [US-led] coalition are equal to zero as compared to strikes by the Russian Armed Forces in Syria,” Naryshkin said during a joint upper and lower house session in Moscow.

The speaker underscored Russia's resolve in combating terrorism unilaterally and jointly. Following the deadly November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, French President Francois Hollande is scheduled to travel to the United States and Russia next week to coalesce the countries in their respective missions.

"Terrorist crimes have no statute of limitations, and retribution for these acts is inevitable."

Russia launched anti-Islamic State airstrikes at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad on September 30.

Since the beginning of the air campaign, the Russian Aerospace Forces have carried out around 1,800 sorties, destroying some 2,700 terrorist targets, according to the General Staff. Several hundreds of militants have been killed, and dozens of command centers and depots have been destroyed.

The lawmaker underscored that Russia would strictly observe its Constitution in the fight against terrorism and will not allow itself to become isolated.

"All of us will act in strict accordance with the Constitution and will not allow any xenophobia or Russia's self-isolation, that would become a sign of weakness, as Vladimir Putin stated. No one will get such a present from us, however somebody is waiting for it," Naryshkin said.

On 17th November the Russian government revealed that the Russian passenger jet which came down over the Sinai peninsula on 31st October fell victim to a terrorist attack perpetrated by militants affiliated with Islamic State (IS) and announced that it would step up air strikes in Syria. Russian air forces in Syria, which for the first time received support from strategic bombers stationed in Russia, launched a series of air strikes targeting Raqqa, an IS stronghold. Vladimir Putin reiterated his call to form a common front in order to combat terrorism and ordered the Russian military to treat French military forces as allies and to coordinate their operations in Syria with them. Putin’s participation in the G20 summit, which was held on 15th and 16th November in Antalya in Turkey, was also meant to bring round Russia’s Western partners to its concept of ending the Syrian crisis. The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov took a similar course during a meeting of a ‘group of Syria’s friends’ in Vienna on 14th November.

Commentary
▪ The Kremlin has been using the attacks in Paris to persuade the West to fundamentally shift its policy towards Syria – and also towards Russia. It is also enticing Western leaders to accept a political formula of a common front for fighting Islamist terrorism which presents the illusion of Russian help in solving problems generated by a protracted civil war in Syria. Russia’s objectives regarding Syria are still in stark contrast to those of its Western ‘allies’: it wants Assad to remain in power and to use the conflict instrumentally in order to improve the Kremlin’s bargaining position in its relations with the West. Russia’s diplomatic measures are meant to provide a convenient excuse for a possible shift in the West’s policy towards Moscow. The change would consist in Western capitals accepting the Russian diagnosis of the causes of the Syrian conflict and the Kremlin’s formula for ending the civil war (leaving Assad in power). This solution is unacceptable for the majority of the anti-Assad armed opposition and may rally popular support for the radical Islamist opposition. This would be more likely to bring about an escalation of the conflict than an end to it.

▪ If the West were to agree to take part in the anti-terrorist alliance Moscow is putting forward, this would imply that it recognises Russia’s privileged position in the post-Soviet area. This area would thus be shifted to the margins of mutual relations. It was no coincidence that President Putin raised the issue of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) between Ukraine and the EU during his talks in Antalya, most likely in order to insist that its implementation be further postponed beyond January 1, 2016. The chairwoman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, while talking with Gerard Larcher, the president of the French senate on 18th November, made the improvement in relations between Moscow and Europe dependent on the sanctions being lifted.

▪ Moscow is hoping that in the aftermath of the attacks in Paris the balance of power on the Western European political scene will change. Conservative, nationalist, anti-immigration and anti-US ideas will gain popularity and this will strengthen those parties and groupings (and perhaps even help them ascend to power) that seem ready to take into account Russian interests and are inclined to adopt slogans calling for Europe’s ‘emancipation’ from the American domination (the Front National in France, the AfD in Germany and Lega Nord in Italy).

Russia has carried out a series of deadly airstrikes against the terrorist group and Vladimir Putin has now sent the country's most elite special forces team into the war zone.

And speculation is heightening that offensive will be bolstered by the China's People's Liberation Army, following a number of reports of military movements in the region backed up by strong words from a senior government member at a United Nations meeting.

Reports emanating from the Middle East last week said China was planning on joining the fight against ISIS "in the coming weeks", according to a Syrian army official.

While Beijing insists it will abide by the United Nations (UN) in the region, hints of an action were backed up when it spoke strongly about a coordinated response to the rising terrorist threat.

Speaking of the Syrian crisis China's foreign minister Wang Yi said at the UN Security Council session in New York: “The world cannot afford to stand by and look on with folded arms, but must also not arbitrarily interfere.”

He added that nations should stand united against "violent extremist ideology".

Mr Wang and his opposite number in Russia, Sergey Lavrov met at length last week and afterwards Mr Lavrov said the two countries are in "similar positions" on many domestic and international issues.

China has also shown solidarity with Syria, joining Russia in vetoeing UN proposals against Bashar al-Assad, which are likely to prevent him being referred by the council to the International Criminal Court.

The latest actions at the UN conference have come amid reports, citing key military sources, Chinese warships have made their way to Syrian shores through the Suez Canal.

Russian media followed that up by quoting Igor Morozov, a member of the Russian Federation Committee on International Affairs, confirming Chinese aircraft carrier, Lianoning, and a guided missile cruiser were heading to the area, and adding Chinese military advisers were already in the region.

Mr Morozov said: "It is known that China has joined our military operation in Syria.

"The Chinese cruiser has already entered the Mediterranean, followed by its aircraft carrier."

These reports have not been verified by China and satellite images show the Syrian port of Tartus, currently empty.

However, China come under threat from ISIS in recent months increasing the theory an attack is in the pipeline.

It began last year when ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi sent out a chilling threat to China over the perceived oppression of the Muslim Uighur minority in the state of Xinjiang.

Beijing claims members of the Uighur militant group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, have been training with extremists in Syria and Iraq.

China officials also say they face a severe threat of terror attacks in Xinjiang, where hundreds have died in clashes over the past three years.

China was further angered by ISIS insurgents releasing photos last month purporting to be of a Chinese citizen who had recently gone missing in the region.

They were demanding a ransom for his return.

ISIS has also spoken of its desire to increase its presence in China and last month a document from the group revealed the country is among a list of nations it wants to seize by 2020.

China has long maintained a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states but, as well as the threat to its own country from ISIS, the situation in Syria is impacting on the Asian state's economy.

That includes the China National Petroleum Corporation being forced to abandon its oilfields in Syria.

China also has oil fields in Iraq and would suffer heavily financially if these fell into the hands of ISIS.

Any interference in the region would pit China against USA and the Asian country would be keen to avoid a confrontation with its fellow superpower.

However, it would be a major boost to the Russian war strategy in Syria.

On Oct. 19, 2008, former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman and secretary of state Colin Powell went on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to endorse Barack Obama for president. Troubled by accusations that Obama was secretly a Muslim, Powell asked the obvious question: “What if he is?”

One reason Powell was so bothered by the suggestion that a Muslim could not become president was, he said, because he had recently seen a photograph of a mother leaning on the gravestone of her fallen son at Arlington National Cemetery. The soldier was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, a New Jersey native and Muslim American recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Though terrorist attacks in the United States and Europe get far more attention, the fact is that Cpl. Khan’s service in the military represents, by far, the vast majority of political violence carried out by Muslims in the West.

True, this Muslim war-making is state-sponsored violence, not terrorism. But it is political violence all the same, and it is committed by religious Muslims, most of whom are also deeply loyal to their Western nation-states.

Tens of thousands of Muslims serve in the U.S. military and in the military forces of countries across Europe. And they always have.

From the time they began arriving in the 8th century, when the military leader Tariq ibn Ziyad conquered Gibraltar, Muslims have been part of the multi-religious military forces of the West.

One reason we think of Muslim warriors as foreign to the West rather than part of it is because much of Western identity has been built on an imaginary conflict between the Christian West and the Muslim East, as so poetically rendered in the French national epic, “The Song of Roland.”

The historical record contradicts that mythology. During the Middle Ages in Iberia, Southern Italy and Anatolia, Muslims and Christians were as likely to fight on the same side as they were to oppose each other.

As Muslims disappeared from Spain after Ferdinand and Isabella’s conquest of Granada in 1492, they continued to make their mark on Western military history in Ottoman Hungary and in the Battle of Warsaw in 1656, when indigenous Tatar Muslims fought bravely for Poland.

During the Crimean War of 1853 to 1856, sometimes called the first modern war, Muslims could be found on all sides.

American Muslims, both slaves and freedmen, served in the American War of Independence and the War of 1812, and with both the Union Army and the Confederacy during the Civil War.

According to Department of Veterans Affairs burial and memorial records, about 5,470 people with possible Muslim names — there are numerous spellings of Muhammad — served in World War I.

In Europe, the numbers were much higher. Perhaps 400,000 Muslims from the British Empire fought on the Allied side. Tens of thousands fought in the French armed forces, and in 1926, the Grand Mosque in Paris was dedicated in their honor.

Muslims also served Allied forces during World War II. One typical serviceman was John R. Omar, a native of Quincy, Mass., who was a turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator. Assigned to the Eighth Air Force in Europe, Omar was part of 29 missions, including the Battle of the Bulge. Awarded the Purple Heart after he was hit by shrapnel in his right leg, Omar went on to run his own body shop and later performed the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.

Muslims also served in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War of 1991 and in post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Perhaps the most decorated Muslim soldier in U.S. military history was Maj. James Ahearn, who converted to Islam while serving in Iraq. He received two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals and several other honors. He was killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad in 2007.

Ahearn’s sacrifice and that of hundreds of thousands of Muslims who have served in Western armies remind us that, as dangerous and frightening as Muslim terrorist attacks have been, there are far more Muslims ready to lay down their lives for the West than to attack it.

Assad expands military operation to Turkmen villages


The army of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been expanding its ground operations in a rural area of Latakia inhabited by Bayır-Bucak Turkmens in a military operation supported by Russian forces, according to reports from the region.

Assad's forces launched simultaneous attacks on the Fırınlık, Acısı and Avanlı regions in a mountainous area where Turkmens live on the border with Turkey, Al Jazeera Trk reported on Friday. The attacks appear to be targeting Turkmen villages and moderate Syrian opposition forces.

Syrian regime forces started a ground military operation close to villages in the Gimam area a few days ago. There are about 50 Turkmen villages in the area.

In the meantime, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has summoned Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov following the Assad regime's attacks on the Turkmen villages. Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgi said on Friday that Ambassador Karlov was told that the bombing of Turkmen villages is not part of the fight against terrorism and that the military operation should be stopped immediately.

Bilgi said in a statement that Russian aircraft are pounding villages where Bayır-Bucak Turkmens live in an area close to Turkey's Yayladağ border gate. He stressed that Karlov was warned that Russia's bombing of civilian Turkmen villages may cause serious consequences and the military operation should be ended. He also said Turkey has extended the same warnings to Russian President Vladimir Putin's Middle East special envoy and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Sultan Abdlhamit Brigade commander mer Abdullah, who is fighting against the Assad forces in one of the Turkmen brigades, told Al Jazeera that in Acısu and Fırınlık, the situation is very critical and the regime forces have taken control of a number of strategic points. Abdullah also said that some Turkmen villages on the border have been targeted by regime forces both from the air and the ground. According to Abdullah, a large number of Turkmens have left the area and flocked to the Turkish border. He stressed that Russian forces are also pounding the area and helping the Assad regime and Shiite militants to open up a corridor in the region. Abdullah said Turkmens still have the control of 27 villages in the region and there are about 100,000 people living there.

Syrian regime forces launched ground offensive into the villages of Gimam three days ago. Meanwhile, the Turkish Red Crescent has delivered two loads of humanitarian aid to the Bayırbucak Turkmen area including food, medical supplies, clothes, blankets and school supplies.

The aid distribution official on the Syrian side, Mohammed Komarja, said the supplies would be distributed to civilians and schools in the region.

Mevlt avuşoğlu, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Chairman responsible for foreign relations, said on Friday that Turkmen brothers of Turkey are not alone. Speaking to the press, avuşoğlu also said that those who support Assad should know that what he is doing in Syria is state terrorism.

The hacktivist group Anonymous has reportedly uncovered plots by Islamic State (Isis) for terrorist attacks in Paris, US, Indonesia, Italy and Lebanon, to occur on Sunday, 22 November. A subgroup of Anonymous called OpParisIntel published a statement claiming that they had found details about an imminent attack by IS, just over a week after 130 people were killed in Paris.

The loose collective of online activists claim that IS is planning on attacking:
•Multiple venues in the French capital,
•A WWE Survivor Series event in the Philips Arena in Atlanta,
•A Five Finger Death Punch gig in Milan,
•University Pastoral Day in Lebanon,
•The Al-Jihad, One Day One Juz in Indonesia, and
•The global Catholic Church celebrations of Feast of Christ the King.

Anonymous published the list of potential targets alongside a statement: "The goal is to make sure the whole world, or at least the people going to these events, know that there have been threats and that there is possibility of an attack to happen. Another goal is to make sure Daesh [the Arabic name for ISIS] knows that the world knows and cancels the attacks, which will disorientate them for a while."

The FBI is taking the alleged threat against the WWE event very "seriously", and they will be releasing a statement on the situation, according to Atlanta-based TV reporter, Mark Winne.

The news comes as Anonymous escalates its online assault on IS after the Paris attacks by taking down one of the most important forums for their communication. IS has responded to hacking group's threats by publishing a series of basic guidelines to prevent their followers' Twitter accounts from being hacked.

Since the shootings at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices, which killed 17 people, the hacktivists claim to have closed down 149 websites, 101,000 Twitter accounts and 5,900 propaganda videos, belonging to IS, according to an investigation by Foreign Policy.

LATAKIA, November 20. /TASS/. Syria’s army has proof evidencing the efficiency of Russian air strikes against terrorist targets, Syrian Brigade General Ali Maihoub said on Friday.

"We have numerous evidence proving the efficiency of Russian air strikes. Massive strikes delivered by Russian warplanes have incurred irreparable losses on international terrorist organizations in Syria, have disrupted their control and financing systems and destroyed their bases and storage facilities," he said.

"This assistance gives our people additional strength in its fight against international terrorism and plays a decisive role in the achievements of the Syrian army," he said. "The Syrian people and army are thankful to Russia for its practical help in the fight against terrorism."

He said the Syrian army was continuing efforts to restore security, exterminate terrorism and establish law and order in the country.

Russia intensified its airstrikes against the Islamic State after ut was reported that the crash of the Russian A321 plane in Egypt wqas caused by a terrorist bomb exploding on board. Russia has involved long-range aviation in its air strikes and has enforced the air grouping deployed in Syria.

The airstrikes stared on September 30 on requiest on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Russia's air grouping involved 69 aircraft, including Su-34 and Su-24M bombers, Su-25 attack aircraft, Su-30SM and Su-27SM3 fighters and Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.

The Kurds need to realise that after Iran's finishes with the Sunni Arabs in Iraq, it will go after the Sunni Kurds finally it will go after the whatever is left of the Christians. Obviously they'll leave them to the end as they pose no threat at the moment Iran is showing how it cares for Christian minorities, to show the west but it's playing the game. That's all.

Don't you think that if Iran stop their war it will lead to the KSA supremacy in the ME?

Not really as Saudi is not looking for hegemony or an empire like Iran is. Saddam invaded Iran because of this Iranian drive for an empire preached by Khomeini in 1978/79 and defended by the IRGC.....

The Crisis of World Order


After Paris, Islamic State’s rise and Syria’s agony are shaking a weakened Europe—and the international system. Can the U.S. summon the resolve to respond?

For several years, President Barack Obama has operated under a set of assumptions about the Middle East: First, there could be no return of U.S. ground troops in sizable numbers to the region; and second, undergirding the first, the U.S. has no interests in the region great enough to justify such a renewed commitment. The crises in the Middle East could be kept localized. There might be bloodshed and violence—even mass killing, in Syria and Libya and elsewhere, and some instability in Iraq—but the fighting, and its consequences, could be contained. The core elements of the world order would not be affected, and America’s own interests would not be directly threatened so long as good intelligence and well-placed drone strikes prevented terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Even Islamic State could be “degraded” and “contained” over time.

These assumptions could have been right—other conflicts in the Middle East have remained local—but they have proven to be wrong. The combined crises of Syria, Iraq and Islamic State have not been contained. Islamic State itself has proven both durable and capable, as the attacks in Paris showed. The Syrian conflict, with its exodus of refugees, is destabilizing Lebanon and Jordan and has put added pressure on Turkey’s already tenuous democracy. It has exacerbated the acute conflict between Sunnis and Shiites across the region.

The multisided war in the Middle East has now ceased to be a strictly Middle Eastern problem. It has become a European problem as well. The flood of refugees from the violence in Syria and the repression of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime have rocked the continent and overwhelmed its institutions. The horrific attacks in Paris, likely organized and directed by Islamic State from its base in Syria, and the prospect of more such attacks, threaten the cohesion of Europe, and with it the cohesion of the trans-Atlantic community, or what used to be known as the West. The crisis on the periphery, in short, has now spilled over into the core.

Europe was not in great shape before the refugee crisis and the terrorist attacks. The prolonged Eurozone crisis eroded the legitimacy of European political institutions and the centrist parties that run them, while weakening the economies of key European powers. The old troika—Britain, France and Germany—that used to provide leadership on the continent and with whom the U.S. worked most closely to set the global agenda is no more. Britain is a pale shadow of its former self. Once the indispensable partner for the U.S., influential in both Washington and Brussels, the mediator between America and Europe, Britain is now unmoored, drifting away from both. The Labor Party, once led by Tony Blair, is now headed by an anti-American pacifist, while the ruling Conservative government boasts of its “very special relationship” with China.

The spillover of the Middle East crisis into this weakened Europe threatens to undermine the continent’s cohesion and sap the strength of trans-Atlantic ties. The refugee crisis has further weakened centrist parties and strengthened the right wing in France and elsewhere; now the terrorist attacks, which these parties have unfairly linked to the refugee crisis, have given them a further boost. The idea of Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing National Front, as France’s next president is no longer far-fetched.

There is a Russian angle, too. Many of these parties, and even some mainstream political movements across the continent, are funded by Russia and make little secret of their affinity for Moscow. Thus Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary has praised “illiberalism” and made common ideological cause with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Germany, a whole class of businesspeople, politicians, and current and former government officials, led by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, presses constantly for normalized relations with Moscow. It sometimes seems, in Germany and perhaps in all of Europe, as if the only person standing in the way of full alliance with Russia is German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Now the Syrian crisis has further bolstered Russia’s position. Although Europeans generally share Washington’s discomfort with Moscow’s support for Mr. Assad and Russia’s bombing of moderate Syrian rebels, in the wake of the Paris attacks, any plausible partner in the fight against Islamic State seems worth enlisting. In France, former President Nicolas Sarkozy has long been an advocate for Russia, but now his calls for partnership with Moscow are echoed by President François Hollande, who seeks a “grand coalition” with Russia to fight Islamic State.

Where does the U.S. fit into all this? The Europeans no longer know, any more than American allies in the Middle East do. Most Europeans still like Mr. Obama. After President George W. Bush and the Iraq war, Europeans have gotten the kind of American president they wanted. But in the current crisis, this new, more restrained and intensely cautious post-Iraq America has less to offer than the old superpower, with all its arrogance and belligerence.

In a recent interview with the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, the US secretary of defence, Ashton Carter, harshly criticised his country’s Arab Gulf allies for their eagerness to “build show-horse air forces” when they needed to be more like the Iranians who are “in the game, on the ground”.

He was obviously referring to Iran’s meddling in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen. Carter said in the same interview that he rebuked the Gulf Cooperation Council states privately: “Guys, you come and complain to us but you’re not in the game. You have to get in the game.”

Had the United States listened to its Gulf allies’ advice since the beginning of the Arab uprisings there would be no sinister game that Carter could criticise the council for not playing. In fact it is Washington that should be criticised for no longer having a real game plan in the Middle East.

For the past four years, Saudi and Turkish officials have been lobbying Washington for a no-fly zone to limit Bashar al-Assad’s slaughter of his own people, and for a military intervention to topple the Iran-Russia-backed dictator. These calls went unheeded in Washington, where the administration’s policy has been disengagement rather than providing a coherent strategy to address the increasingly chaotic security architecture of the entire Middle East.

When Assad repeatedly used chemical weapons against his own people, President Obama threatened him with airstrikes. When Assad defied Obama’s threat and used chemical weapons yet one more time, Obama first hid behind Congress, and then gladly took a face-saving initiative from none other than Assad’s patron, Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.

But when it came to the flawed Iran deal, the president doggedly pursued it against the interests of America’s historic allies in the region. The inevitable aftermath was the recently witnessed intensification of Iran’s destructive interference in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.

In the short term, the deal is expected to release billions of dollars of frozen assets which the regime in Iran will use in backing more destructive activities by Hezbollah and the Houthis. In the long term, Iran is likely to increase its undue influence over the lives of millions in Arab lands – a prospect that will have a further destabilising effect in the region.

In reproaching the Gulf Cooperation Council for not being more assertive, Carter conveniently ignores the Saudi-led military and political effort to restore Yemen’s internationally recognised government and prevent the country from turning into a completely failed state. This, after all, was an effort that came in no small part as a response to Obama’s mantra demanding that US allies in the region learn to sort out their own problems independently as “America cannot solve all of the world’s problems”.

As to the reason why Saudi and the Gulf Cooperation Council’s efforts in the fight against Isis have been perceived as not being as intense as their efforts in Yemen, the answer is twofold.

First, the international coalition’s strategy in the fight against Isis has failed as it becomes clearer that in order to remove Isis, Assad has to go. Second, with the Houthi threat at its border, Saudi Arabia has to efficiently prioritise its interventions to preserve its own security and avoid a Yemen controlled entirely by an Iranian proxy militia on its doorstep.

In addition, Saudi Arabia is faced with the challenge of fighting Isis’s terrorism on its own soil.

This type of prioritisation would have done wonders for the White House had it formulated a concrete plan to swiftly deal with Assad and set the stage for a transition in Syria well before so-called Islamic State took large swaths of Iraq and Syria, and well before other extremist groups such as Jabhat al Nusra grew to the level it is at today.

It is precisely due to US inaction in the region that Russia has placed itself as the military gatekeeper in the heart of the Middle East, undoing the main dividend of the cold war – Russian disengagement from the Middle East.

The concrete result today of this sinister turn of events is that the White House has made America’s entire Syria policy – and its allies’ regional security – hostage to the whims of Russia.

Arab states are often criticised for deflecting blame and avoiding responsibility for their actions. It seems that Mr Carter has become too acquainted with that tactic. Mr Secretary, your allies are more than willing to play, but they need a game plan. Do you have one?

Iran's supreme leader, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Tehran, said on Monday U.S. policies in the Middle East region were a threat to both countries and called for closer ties between Tehran and Moscow.

The civil war in Syria has evolved into a wider proxy struggle between global powers, with Russia and Iran supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad while Western powers, Turkey and Gulf Arab states want him out.

"The Americans have a long-term plot and are trying to dominate Syria and then the whole region ... This is a threat to all countries, especially Russia and Iran," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, according to his website, at the meeting on the sidelines of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit in Tehran.

"The United States is now trying to achieve its failed military objectives in Syria by political means," he added, referring to proposed peace talks to end the civil war in Syria.

At a meeting in Vienna this month following deadly attacks in Paris and Beirut, world powers, including Russia, the United States and countries from Europe and the Middle East agreed on a political process in Syria leading to elections within two years, but differences remained on key issues such as Assad's fate.

A Kremlin spokesman was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying that Putin and Khamenei had agreed at their talks that global powers should not impose their political will on Syria.

Putin, on his first visit to Iran since 2007, presented an old edition of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, to Khamenei, the Iranian leader's website said, publishing photos of the book.

Khamenei praised Putin for "neutralizing Washington's plots" and said economic relations between the two countries could "expand beyond the current level".

Tehran and Moscow have stepped up ties following a landmark nuclear deal in July between Iran and six world powers including Russia and the United States. Under the deal, Tehran agreed long-term curbs on its nuclear program in exchange for an easing of economic sanctions.

On Monday Putin relaxed an export ban on nuclear equipment and technology to Iran.

Iran's ambassador to Russia also said on Monday that Moscow had started the process of supplying Tehran with an S-300 anti-missile rocket system.

Russia and Iran are undertaking joint military action in support of Assad. Backed by Russian air strikes, hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived since late September to take part in a major ground offensive planned in western and northwestern Syria, their biggest deployment in the country to date.

A Russian Mi-8 helicopter came under attack while conducting a search and rescue operation, searching for the crew of the downed Su-24 in Syria. One naval infantry soldier was reported killed, the helicopter destroyed by mortar fire.

The Russian General Staff said that two Mi-8s were involved in the operation to save the crew of the downed Su-24.

One helicopter was been shot down, its crew evacuated to the Russian base at Hmeymim.

"A search and rescue operation involving two Mi-8 helicopters was carried out, charged with evacuating the pilots from the landing site. During the operation, as a result of small-arms fire, one of the helicopters was damaged, and forced to make a landing on neutral territory. One naval infantry soldier was killed," Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, told reporters on Tuesday.

The officer noted that the "personnel from the search and rescue team and the helicopter's crew have been evacuated and are now located at the Hmeymim air base. The downed helicopter was destroyed by mortar fire from territory controlled by armed gangs."

"The search and rescue operation tasked with finding the crew of the downed Russian bomber continues," Rudskoi added, emphasizing that the territories in which the operation was conducted is believed to be controlled by radical rebel groups.

The Russian Air Force should continue its efforts to close the Jarabulus-Afrin corridor in northern Syria, despite the latest Turkish provocation, Bangkok-based geopolitical analyst Tony Cartalucci stresses.

Geopolitical analyst Tony Cartalucci draws attention to the fact that over the recent weeks Russian and Syrian forces have been steadily gaining ground in Syria, retaking territory from ISIL and al-Qaeda.

"The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has even begun approaching the Euphrates River east of Aleppo, which would effectively cut off ISIS [ISIL] from its supply lines leading out of Turkish territory," Cartalucci narrates in his latest article for New Eastern Outlook.

Siding With ISIL? Turkey Spotted Dealing With Radical Islamists in Syria
He explains that from there, Syrian troops with Russian air support would move north, into the very "safe zone" which Washington and Ankara have planned to carve out of Syria. Cartalucci points out that the "safe zone" includes a northern Syria area stretching from Jarabulus to Afrin and Ad Dana.

If Syrian troops establish their control over this zone, the Western plan of taking and holding the territory (with the prospect of further Balkanization of the region) would fall apart at the seams. In light of this, the regime change project, harbored by the West since the very beginning of the Syrian unrest, would be "indefinitely suspended," Cartalucci underscores.

"The endgame is at hand, and only the most desperate measures can hope to prevent Russia and Syria from finally securing Syria's borders. Turkey's provocation is just such a measure," he emphasizes.

"As in the game of chess, a player often seeks to provoke their opponent into a series of moves," Cartalucci notes.
