Azor....actually agree with your comments...my concern is the announced Russian parking tactical nuclear capable missiles right next to the NATO borders coupled with their de-escalation nuclear first strike is in fact a serious threat and it eliminates any warning time even for the US/NATO missile defense systems and the flight times are in seconds not minutes as with ICBMs.....and BTW the Russians fully know the Ageis system has never been against Russian ICBMs....which they even occasionally admit...

Well, firstly, unless the Russian military is planning to establish a demilitarized area within Russia's western borders, any Russian missile deployment would inherently threaten NATO. Russia's heavily fortified Western Military District borders 5 NATO members and also protects Saint Petersburg, Moscow and most of Russia's large cities.

Secondly, Russia's nuclear saber-rattling is very concerning, although I believe that it is an attempt to mask conventional weakness. No nuclear war planners were ever able to create a restricted or limited nuclear war scenario either during or after the Cold War. If Russia's Iskanders in Kaliningrad launched nuclear R-500s at NATO bases in Germany and Poland, the Kremlin would have roughly 10 minutes to gloat over their cunning before Trident IIs arced in from the Barents Sea.

Thirdly, Russia is serious concerned about American BMD developments, especially given the American withdrawal from the ABM Treaty. The Kremlin is well aware that its delivery systems are less reliable than American ones and that the US has a range of ABM systems that Russia does not have. According to CSIS, Russian wargamers concluded that if Russia launched an all-out first strike on the US, the US would retain a second strike capability of some ~200 warheads. If the US did the same to Russia, Russia would be left with ~120 warheads; suddenly, the US' less-than-strategic BMD systems become very important as they whittle down this number below 100, and malfunctions reduce it even further. Russia has made a poor case of its concerns, and Obama has not substantially changed NATO BMD policy in Russia's view.

The rationale of NATO BMD is questionable. Iran has no motivation and very little capability to target Europe, especially when its adversaries are Israel and the GCC, which can be targeted with SRBMs and cruise missiles. Moreover, all of Western Europe already lives in the shadow of Russia's nuclear arsenal and yet there are no plans to develop countermeasures along SDI lines.

Certainly, the US should be on guard for DPRK nuclear blackmail and PLA's growing inventory of ballistic missiles, but this would either require new multilateral agreements (as per my previous post) or withdrawal from the INF Treaty as well...

This is interesting as when one adds the Hainan Island incident, the Russian invasion of Georgia and lack of high-end military investment (e.g. F-22), it becomes clear that the GWB Administration was utterly weak in the face of high-end political and military competition and sacrificed American prestige and capabilities in order to further low-end wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Snap drills for speed and mobilization drills was what exactly was intensely watched in the GDR up to 1991 as indicators of a possible Soviet invasion down the Fulda Gap and with Berlin literally behind their LOCs we actually were good at it.

When Russia held it's largest ever GDR exercise in about 1986/87 we were counting literally every rail car, every solider and every tank to ascertain their actual strengths being deployed to see if they have reached critical mass needed for an invasion and then we counted them leaving to see if they "accidently" left anyone behind.......

The current snap drills have showed him they can move multiple divisions of well trained troops long distances in really a relatively fast pace...ie attack mode coming straight out of their bases fully fueled and armed heading West...far faster than NATO can decide and then move.

What he is also not saying is that all these exercises over a certain strength required OSCE notification and OSCE observers for transparency....

In questioning a Polish inland pushboat captain in 1983 when he jumped ship and asked for asylum did we learn why.....at any given time in Germany or the rest of Europe there were constantly Polish inland pushboats and their dumb barges underway and they were never tracked by anyone.

The Polish and Soviet Spetsnaz had unknown to us constantly conducted in deep Poland numerous building of river bridges using the pushboats and their dumb barges and we had never realized that the dumb barges allowed tanks to fully cross over them .......simple and ingenious if you think about it...thus no need for formal Soviet bridging units to be stationed in the GDR....

The recent across border attack by UAF near Debaltseve was a armored raid about four kms deep to destroy a major artillery and mortar base that was shelling the UAF...then they pulled back even though under Minsk 2 this is area is in fact Ukrainian not Russian controlled.

Unfortunately, he must not be a student of geography, or perhaps his orders to redeploy Russian forces east of the Urals before the impending NATO offensive was ignored...

More than one major Western Military District base is within 500 km of Finland, mainly due to the proximity of Saint Petersburg. I fail to see how Putin can militarize the district even more unless he camps 40,000 troops on Finland's borders as he did with Ukraine.

Regardless of the math, this is a threat one must take seriously, as Finland's non-aligned and Soviet-sensitive status was one of the perks of the Cold War. He may very well calculate that using force on Finland would bring back that status and discourage Sweden from forging closer ties to NATO. Finland is a key "buffer" for Russia, as much as Ukraine or Belarus is.

The recent across border attack by UAF near Debaltseve was a armored raid about four kms deep to destroy a major artillery and mortar base that was shelling the UAF...then they pulled back even though under Minsk 2 this is area is in fact Ukrainian not Russian controlled.

Any sources or more information on this? It would be the Donbas fight of the year so far and be the first major Ukrainian offensive since 2014.
