After backing with artillery #YPG attempts to cut Castillo Road in #Aleppo, pro-Regime forces tried today to reach it from North (#Handarat)
Actually, four days ago (5 April), the YPG in Sheikh Maqssood District (northern Aleppo City), and the PFLP-GC's Liwa al-Qods (they consider themselves 'commandos') attempted a simultaneous attack on Castello Road. Mind: the YPG is no part of the UN-negotiated cease-fire, but it had a cease-fire agreement with Fateh Halab (Aleppo Operations Room) - a coalition of FSyA and AAS units holding eastern and southern Aleppo City. This was stipulating that Kurds would stop attacking Castello Road - the last supply line for insurgent-held eastern and southern Aleppo City.

Palestinians attacked Hindarat Camps (Palestinian refugee camps, held by the FSyA) on the northern side of the road, Kurds the southern side. This attack - apparently the first-ever assault by the PFLP-GC on any FSyA-held positions (so far they always fought the Daesh in central Syria, usually acting as a 'tail' of the BPM's Tiger Force) - was beaten back with quite serious loss. Worse yet, it seems the FSyA then launched a counterattack that collapsed PFLP-GC's positions in Hindarat and gained quite a lots of ground.

The YPG didn't fare any better. Suqour al-Jabal FSyA TOWed four of their technicals plus a 107mm recoilless rifle. Meanwhile, infantry of the Ahrar ash-Sham, the Levant Front, Northern Division FSyA (the latter is including the Sultan Murad Brigade, Sultan Fatih Group, Fastaqam Kama Umrit Brigade, 13th Brigade, 116th Brigade and 1st Regiment), Noureddin az-Zenghi Movement, and Abu Amrah Brigades - advanced deep into Sheikh Maqsood District, supported by at least one T-72AV and one BMP-1. Under this pressure, Kurds then began crying about civilian casualties, about attacks with chemical weapons, and that they are 'fighting al-Qaida' (aka JAN) - although no CWs were used against them, and there is absolutely no JAN in that part of Syria.

Finally, when one of Ahrar's COs ordered his BM-21 battery to plaster Sheikh Maqsood, he was publicly reprimanded by Aloush, who prohibited the use of such weapons against build-up areas full of civilians.

The RT then jumped the train by declaring that Aloush - though his intervention against the use of BM-21s - actually prohibited the use of chemical weapons against Kurds... :rolleyes:

Anyway, Russians eventually appeared on the scene: during the night from 7 to 8 April, they flew about a dozen of air strikes on Castello Road (note: VKS is now operating exclusively over the night - at least over the Aleppo-Idlib-enclaves held by FSyA and Ahrar, because of the MANPAD threat). These hit nothing at all (at least none of their intended targets: they might have killed a few Kurds though), but they did have the effect of forcing insurgents to disperse and stop their assault on Sheik Maqsood. Six other strikes were 'much more effective': they killed about a dozen of civilians in Atarib (3 times) and Sarqib (3 times), both of which are held by insurgents...

And overall, this Russian intervention came much too late: not only is the YPG's position in Sheikh Maqsood much weakened, but the Castello Road is safe again.

That aside, their air strikes are a blatant breach of cease-fire: insurgents were not fighting the regime' (say: NDF, of which there is none in this part of Syria, if at all), but the YPG (which is no part of the cease-fire), and the PFLP-GC (which is an IRGC-surrogate, and no part of the cease-fire either).

Of course, I doubt anybody is going to complain...

First we have a somewhat major interview of a FSA commander on the importance of the capture of the Turkish border area from IS amazingly unusual for Sputnik International a major Russian propaganda outlet AND now this from the Assad side......

Remarkable shift in pro-#Assad "al-Masdar News" reporting.
From "Nusra-led terrorists" to a detailed pic of rebels in their fighting to regain the border areas.....

They even gave JaN a "nice shout out for their efforts"........

I note the cited source is actually a Tass story and it refers to a joint Belarus-Russia air defence agreement signed in 2009, long before the Ukraine War started. One would therefore hope NATO noticed and could predict what the structure would be. It maybe dangerous, but if NATO knew does that mean 'extremely dangerous'?

IMHO......
Looking at the rebels in the offensive this week strengthens my feeling that Russia's intervention spelled Assad's end and is absolutely the opposite of what Putin envisioned his military adventure would achieve.....

He totally miscalculated the resilience of the opposition to Assad even in the face of a massive air bombardment....thoroughly caused by his belief in his own propaganda ie "his altered state of reality"....

This time the Russian Chechen tactic of attacking the civil society in a brutal fashion actually strengthened the opposition......

WHY do I say this?.......yesterday a single photo summed up this current opposition offensive and it crosses the entire spectrum of moderates to JaN and their groups.....even JaN has mellowed a tad and sees cooperation as the way forward if they are going to achieve the tossing out of Assad and the Shia mercenaries.....

This photo showed a group of FSA storming over a high berm and attacking IS..all were wearing the same uniforms and helmet's but one in the middle of the attack column was hand signaling others to cross as well with them....he was evidently their leader and he was leading in the middle and paying close attention to his attack formation and driving the others on through leadership...something I have not seen for awhile in Syria...something has definitely changed in this latest offensive. He was not leading from the front but leading in the middle signaling he was taking the same exact risks as his own fighters that he was asking to attack.

Maybe it is the confidence gained in the sheer fact of surviving a massive Russian bombing campaign and then suddenly getting US CAS and far more weapons but it is more than that...they are now actually defeating IS on the battlefield something the Obama WH and Kerry never thought possible.

Moscow and Damascus are elaborating a joint operation to liberate Aleppo from terrorists, the Syrian prime minister said.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The Russian Aerospace Forces' aircraft will help the Syrian army liberate Aleppo from terrorist groups, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Halqi said Sunday as quoted by a Russian lawmaker.

"Halqi told us that Syria and Russia are preparing an operation to liberate Aleppo. Russian aviation will help the Syrian army to attack on the ground," Russian upper house member Dmitry Sablin told RIA Novosti.

Moscow commenced an anti-terrorism operation in Syria on September 30 at President Bashar Assad's request. On March 14, Vladimir Putin ordered to start withdrawing the main part of the Russian air group from Syria. Moscow maintained its presence at the Hmeymin airbase and the Tartus naval facility.

"The Syrian people will never forget the assistance provided by the Russian people. First of all, it concerns the decision of [Russian] President Vladimir Putin on the involvement of Russian Aerospace Forces in the operation to support the Syrian army on the ground. More than 500 settlements with a total area of 40,000 square kilometers were liberated thanks to it," Halqi added.

On March 27, the Syrian army, backed by militias and Russian Aerospace Forces, fully liberated Palmyra, which was under the control of Daesh since May 2015.

Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Daesh and the Nusra Front. A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27. It does not apply to terrorist groups such as Daesh and Nusra Front, both of which are banned in Russia.

The US is missing a huge opportunity in Syria

Some analysts regard Al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate as a greater long-term threat to Western security than ISIS.

And the US might be missing out on a golden opportunity to move against the group.

Over the past month, residents of the Idlib province have taken to the streets to protest both the authoritarian regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Jabhat al-Nusra. The latter is also known as the Nusra Front, Al Qaeda's branch in Syria.

A partial ceasefire that includes regime forces, Syria's allies, and rebel groups (not including ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra) led to a break in violence that allowed civilians more leeway than they previously enjoyed.

The protests could provide a crucial opening for the US to support the moderate Syrian opposition and push for a political solution that includes Assad leaving power, but experts doubt that the US will make use of it.

Ahmad al-Soud, the commander and founder of the US-backed Free Syrian Army group known as Division 13, told Business Insider that residents of Maaret al-Nouman in Idlib wanted to send a message with these protests that they're opposed to Assad as well as terrorist groups like Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS (also known as the Islamic State, ISIL, or Daesh).

"Protesters wanted to show the world that they are against Al Qaeda's ideology, that they are … moderates and that as Syrians we reject Al Qaeda's ideology and support the FSA because they want a simple, secular state," al-Soud told Business Insider last month through a translator.

"[Protests were] all across Syria. It was all revolution flags," he said.

And since Jabhat al-Nusra is trying to lay deep roots in Syrian society by gaining popular support before cracking down on the population, it has been reluctant to treat protesters too harshly.

Jabhat al-Nusra has been gaining support in Syria partly by helping moderate opposition groups fight the Assad regime, which these groups consider their main enemy even as the US and other Western powers focus on beating back ISIS.

But there's a big problem with Jabhat al-Nusra's strategy: It's inherently dependent on continued fighting in Syria. Without a civil war, and without Assad in power, Jabhat al-Nusra would have a harder time gaining support and aligning with moderates.

"What's been fascinating from the cessation of hostilities is that it's revealed for the first time the biggest weakness in Al Qaeda's strategy in Syria. And that is that it is inherently dependent on a continued level of intense conflict in Syria," Charles Lister, a fellow at the Middle East Institute who has written a book on the insurgency in Syria, said at an event in Washington, DC, last Friday.

He continued:

That intense conflict over the last five years has provided Al Qaeda with an opportunity to demonstrate its worth on the battlefield to the Syrian opposition and to the civilian support base. Without an intense level of conflict, the people came back to the streets and started chanting things, which fundamentally object or fundamentally contradict Al Qaeda's stated objectives in Syria.

Al Qaeda opposes any flag other than its own, but in Maaret al-Nouman, protesters were carrying the flag of the revolution.

"Everywhere people were protesting, they had the revolution flag," al-Soud said of the early days of the protests. "The revolution flag is something Nusra is against. They say any flag but 'there is no God but God' and their Al Qaeda trademark below it, that's the only flag you're allowed to fly in Idlib, according to Nusra."

This brought tensions between Jabhat al-Nusra and the moderate opposition to a head — the group reportedly made some illicit arrests and attacked FSA headquarters — but their attempt at a crackdown ended up backfiring.

The crackdown "has now sparked 20 days in a row of protests by women, children, the elderly, and young men against Jabhat al-Nusra's control of Idlib," Lister said. "This is something we've never seen before and it's a huge opportunity to undermine Al Qaeda's long-term future in Syria. Unfortunately, as of now, there's very little that we as the West have done to take advantage of this."

'Our options down the road are going to be significantly less'

The West has a small window to act, according to experts.

"This is the first time this opportunity has arisen and it won't be there for very long," Lister said. "Al Qaeda has taken a step back and it has refused to subjugate these protests so far. If it does, and it will one day choose to do so, those protests will end like that and they'll probably never come back again."

Genevieve Casagrande, a Syria research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, said that as the Syrian conflict drags on, extremist groups like Jabhat al-Nusra will eventually to weaken the moderate opposition.

"The US is at large risk of losing potential partners in Syria," Casagrande told Business Insider. "Jabhat al-Nusra is eating away at these moderate groups, and they will one day succeed. It's only going to fuel further radicalization and the spectrum is going to start inching farther and farther toward Salaafi-jihadi groups."

The best way to achieve a solution to Syria's civil war is through these moderate opposition groups, but if Jabhat al-Nusra moves to target these groups and remove them from the battlefield, "our options down the road are going to be significantly less," Casagrande explained.

And as long as Assad stays in power, moderate rebels will be spread too thin to make a significant dent in the extremist groups on the Syrian battlefield.

"Right now the opposition is most threatened by the Assad regime, and at the end of the day, the opposition seeks to bring about the overthrow of the Assad regime, and so it is very difficult for any opposition group to justify attacking any group like Jabhat al-Nusra," Casagrande said.

Rebels in Syria are edging closer to the key northern town of Dabiq held by the Islamic State group, pushing the jihadists out of more than a dozen villages, a monitor said Tuesday.

Rebel forces are now within 10 kilometers (six miles) of Dabiq, a town of significant symbolic importance to the jihadists, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"Since mid-March, Islamist and rebel fighters backed by Turkey have seized control of a wide border area spanning 15 kilometers (10 miles)," said Abdel Rahman, whose Britain-based group relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria.

The rebel groups, including Faylaq al-Sham and the Sultan Murad Brigades, have seized 14 villages since mid-March, he said, adding that Turkish artillery fire on IS positions had bolstered the offensive.

Dabiq, a town in Syria's Aleppo province captured by IS in August 2014, is of crucial ideological importance to the group.

The town, which according to a Sunni Muslim prophecy will be the site of an end-of-times battle between Christian forces and Muslim fighters, has become a byword and rallying cry for IS.

The group has named its English-language online magazine "Dabiq" after the town.

CrowBat.....appears Russia via IS is attempting to provoke Turkey into crossing into Syria to ensure no further rocket attacks by IS occurs....exactly as Putin predicted weeks ago......"Turkey will invade Syria and we will hinder it"......interesting to see the interaction between YPG, Assad, Putin and Iran with IS....YET the West does not seem to "see the linkage"...Wouldn't say that.

Right now, Russians are busy elsewhere:
- After latest catastrophe of the IRIA's attack on al-Eis (where all sorts of 'best', 'elite' etc. of regular Islamic Republic of Iran Army's units were bushwacked by the JAN), they and the IRGC are searching for a new spot where they might breach the insurgent frontlines, preferrably under excuse of, 'we're fighting the JAN'.

Guess, they'll go for Hindarat, north of Aleppo, from where they can punch in southern direction, cut off the Castello Road (last supply link for insurgent-held parts of the city), and link-up with Kurds in Sheik Maqsood District.

- Russians are also encouraging Tehran to intensify its 'surge' in Syria, i.e. send additional troops there (see Kerry's 'Iranian withdrawal'). Between others, they have started the delivery of S-300 SAMs to Iran.

In turn they hope this might have positive impacts for their financial situation: Moscow is meanwhile so cash-starved, that they must hope that delivery of S-300s is going to prompt Iranians to order Su-30s (supposedly: Yak-130s and plenty of Mi-17/171 helicopters too). Mind: whenever such a contract is signed, 50% of the money is due 'up front'.

Their problem is: after all the negative experiences with reactors in Busher and with S-300s, plus with Iranian-paid order for Syrian MiG-35s (which were then never delivered) Iranians became extremely cautious and simply do not pay anything at all without Russians delivering first.

At least there is still no visual confirmation for anything else - which, considering potential importance of such a success, would've otherwise been praised by Daesh media beyond any belief.

Nevertheless, they did shot down an Assadist fighter-bomber (type unknown), over Khekleh AB. That is: they hit it as this was taking over from there, pilot lost control and ejected while attempting to reach Suweida AB.

Wow response is correct here as the EA-6B Prowler is no longer in the active MC service...so must be from a MC Reserve unit.....actually did not know they were still in the inventory....and still flying as most of the active duty Prowler crews were retrained in their replacement F18 series.

Well, some conclusions about the Daesh in Syria are meanwhile unavoidable:

- 1.) They have excellent intel and/or reconnaissance;

- 2.) and they know where to strike in order to hurt the other side.

This is not to say that blows they deliver are always something like '100% guaranteed success'. Furthermore, they are obviously losing every battle against a well-organized, -equipped, and -dedicated opponent. But, there is no doubt that although facing qualitative and quantitative odds, they're doing well at evening these by quite a margin.

CrowBat..you point out something that many IS commenters fail to notice....their battle tactics have not changed greatly since 2004 when they first showed up as QJBR in Iraq.

Actually they have been quite capable of learning from their failures and adapting to those failures.

They had in 2004 already several things going for them........an unusual tactical patience to pick their attack points and target sets, coupled with extremely long target surveillance phases. PLUS they have become literally the world's greatest IED makers...point in case are the large amount of really large VBIEDS in the ton ranges....on 2006 they were already using 2 to 4 ton homemade explosive VBIEDs against the US Army in Iraq....or the use of "swarm attacks" already being successfully used in 2005.

I was able to debrief an entire 24 man Ansar al Sunnah group complete with their Emir on their battle tactics that we were seeing and was not surprised to see just how close they paralleled standard guerrilla tactics just adapted for the ME mindset.

If true that a bulk of those leading IS now were former Iraqi intel officers and senior military officers under Saddam and the internal structure is being driven by this group.... their ability to hang in and fight is not a surprise. They have been under air strikes and ground attacks for now over two years and while losing say about 8% of their territory they are largely still in control of their areas and in Iraq are capable of driving fear still into the new and retrained Iraqi Army...the Iraqi Army attacks, bullets fly and then they flee is about all we have been seeing for the past year.

What is surprising is that what they win they cannot hold onto it due to manpower issues...much as does FSA have a problem with holding areas they take but this is due to the concept of taking villages and towns to hold onto large areas....I have yet to see anyone make a massive cross country dash behind each others lines to strike deep granted the RuAF is making it hard but it is still possible.

In the end the actual fight will be between FSA and their groups against IS...simply because both are highly motivated and have trained former officers/NCOs leading them and both are fighting for a "flag and a cause"...

What remains of whatever makes up SAA, Hezbollah and the Iranians are fighting but for money and after the latest numerous loses IMHO their heart is no longer in the fight and they are going through the motions.

In the end it will be boots on the round needed to actually combat IS face to face and those boots must be Syrian...why the Obama WH has had a hard time with this idea is totally unexplainable.

BTW...this kind of sums up the positon of the West quite nicely......

UN Envoy presented a proposal (suggested externally) to opposition HNC today:

HNC said no

UN growing exasperated at regime obstruction of aid access & delivery; requests take 1-2 weeks to receive response, many go ignored entirely
Assad regime forces have continued multiple sieges inside #Syria, while blocking UN aid & stealing medical equipment from UN relief trucks.

That document wasn’t intended to shape trajectory of 2nd round of talks, but settle regime’s initial obsession w. defining “principles."

That De Mistura cancelled his presser today underlines his exasperation with regime obstructionism from addressing issue of transition.

What is surprising is that what they win they cannot hold onto it due to manpower issues...much as does FSA have a problem with holding areas they take but this is due to the concept of taking villages and towns to hold onto large areas....I have yet to see anyone make a massive cross country dash behind each others lines to strike deep granted the RuAF is making it hard but it is still possible.Indeed: this is the most astonishing aspect of the entire 'Daesh-War' - whether in Iraq or in Syria:

- Daesh carefully reccons its objective;

- then launches a quick, foremost 'surprise' attack;

- opposition collapses (usually alone out of panic of the sort, 'Daesh ante portas, Daesh ante portas'...) - regardless how strong, equipped, and well-entrenched;

- opposition (no matter if ISF, IRGC, FSYA/AAS or else) then makes the mistake of returning to 'classic' tactics of, 'we have to properly prepare our counter-attack', which is only

- buying time for the Daesh to heavily mine their newly-reached objective: Daesh then mines the area then 'guards' it with only few weak gangs, which have little problems to impose (often massive) attrition for weeks without an end...

And yet: nobody fighting them - apparently: not even the well-funded ISF - comes to the idea to change anything about their behaviour about the Daesh. They all remain overreliant on 'light infantry' for fighting the Daesh, instead of taking care to develop properly equipped units of combat engineers, supported by large-calibre automatic weapons (just for example, and because it seems that overpowering the Daesh with high-rate of firepower - even by such 'obsolete' weapons like S-60 flak calibre 57mm - is the only really effective method of fighting them, at least on the ground).

Add to this the micromanagement of the war by the White House - which more often than not is resulting in reluctant deployment of air power - and I would say one has got an excellent explanation for why it's so hard to beat what the Pentagon says are hardly more than 25,000-30,000 Daesh out there (in Iraq and Syria combined).

Another absurdity of this war is the Russian misuse of air power for little else but PRBS purposes.

They stacked Hmemmem AB up to the roofs of local hangars with obsolete fighter-bombers; then launched these into hundreds of air strikes every day, armed with 2-4 bombs only (whereas the same aicraft could load up to 10 such bombs each); then they claimed each of fighter-bombers is striking 2 (sometimes more) targets per mission, while actually 99% of weapons they've deployed were dumb bombs 'sprayed then prayed' in direction of whatever 'targets' they deemed...hm... 'useful to target'...? ...or something else... heaven only knows about their targeting processes, then no matter how much I studied these, they simply make no sense.

Anyway, all of this unleashed against about everybody possible in Syria.

Just not the Daesh.

Even less so against al-Qaida's affiliate JAN - and this because, at least in theory, both are 'mortal enemies' of Russia? And the JAN should be a CIA/al-Qaida-conspiracy?

Bottom line: hand-on-heart... OK, that intervention was aiming to stabilize Assad's position. Buy him some time to recover his military. But then: 9,000 combat sorties flown, about 25,000 bombs spent for achieving absolutely nothing else but to be able to say they have flown 9,000 combat sorties and dropped 25,000 bombs.

Then, barely a month after its 'air show' has ended, the very parties that were supposedly 'bombed back into stone age' and 'severely defeated' by Russians have not only 'recovered', but are so well on the way of defeating the regime again, that this now must be saved by a 'surge' in deployment of Iranian Army (not only the IRGC)...

Beirut (AFP) - Fighting in Aleppo killed at least 22 civilians as the opposition delegation threatened Sunday to quit Syria peace talks in Geneva if there is no progress on a political transition.

The opposition High Negotiations Committee said the indirect negotiations could collapse if Syria's regime refuses to compromise on political and humanitarian issues.

"We might suspend (our participation in) the talks if things carry on this way, and then there will be no prospect for any political solution," HNC member Abdulhakim Bashar told AFP.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of civilians killed in flashpoint Aleppo city was one of the highest single tolls since a fragile truce came into force on February 27.

Nearly all warring parties in Syria -- the regime, rebels, jihadists, and Kurds -- have carved out zones of control in war-torn Aleppo province.

The truce has seen violence drop across parts of Syria, including the northern city of Aleppo, but renewed clashes there in the past 24 hours have seriously strained the truce, the Observatory said.

At least six civilians were killed and eight wounded in regime air strikes on rebel-held eastern parts of the city on Saturday.

And a barrage of rockets and sniper fire by opposition groups onto government-controlled western districts killed 16 civilians, including 10 children and two women.

"There's a clear escalation. This was the bloodiest incident in Aleppo and its province" since the ceasefire began, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

"This escalation directly threatens the truce."

The HNC has questioned the regime's commitment to a political solution to Syria's five-year war, particularly in the wake of the renewed violence in Aleppo.

"The humanitarian situation is continually deteriorating, the issue of the detainees has not seen any progress, the ceasefire has almost collapsed, and now there is an attack on Aleppo from three sides," Bashar said in Switzerland.

"Given these factors, we are reviewing everything, and we will continue our meetings today (Sunday) so that tomorrow we can decide what to do."

A second member of the HNC delegation, speaking anonymously, said the talks were nearly at "an impasse".

"The negotiations have nearly reached an impasse with the intransigent regime's refusal to negotiate the fate of (President Bashar al-)Assad in the Geneva talks," the member said.

Assad's fate has remained the main sticking point in peace talks, with Syria's opposition clinging onto its call for his ouster since the conflict broke out in 2011.

But the regime has rejected the embattled leader's departure, calling his fate "a red line".

The peace plan outlined by UN envoy Staffan de Mistura and backed by world powers envisions a political transition, a new constitution, and presidential and parliamentary elections by September 2017.

But Syria's government hosted its own regularly-scheduled parliamentary elections last week, which Assad's ruling Baath party easily won.

As expected, the Baath party and its allies won a majority of the 250 parliamentary seats in a vote that only took place in government-held parts of the country.

The election was denounced by the opposition as a "farce".

In Geneva on Sunday, the head of the HNC delegation called for renewed attacks on regime forces, despite the shaky truce.

"Don't trust the regime and don't wait for their pity," Mohammed Alloush, a leading political figure in the Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam) rebel group, wrote on Twitter.

"Strike them at their necks (kill them). Strike them everywhere," he said.

A fellow opposition figure said Alloush's hawkish statement did not represent the HNC's position.

Brokered by Russia and the United States, the ceasefire agreement to cease hostilities excludes the fight against the Islamic State group or Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria.

The truce had largely held across parts of Syria since late February, despite frequent accusations of breaches on both sides.

But recent violence has sparked concerns the ceasefire may peter out, partly because rebels are involved in the battles too.

IS jihadists have seized fresh territory from rebel groups in Syria's north, threatening the key opposition town of Azaz, just eight kilometres (five miles) south of the Turkish border.

The jihadist onslaught has forced 30,000 Syrians to flee, and tens of thousands more are at risk of displacement.

Since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, half of the country's population has been displaced -- including five million who have fled to neighbouring states.

More than 270,000 people have been killed.

Russia has never for a single hour held to any of the 11 points in Minsk 2 in eastern Ukraine ceasefire and the US even warned Putin to rein in his lap dog Assad BUT in the last three days the Russian AF has been bombing more and more SO they never had any clear intent to hold to the CoH....

Russia had hoped that all the Shia mercenary and IRGC offensives would have led to massive ground gains in time for Geneva but instead they were major failures.....

Actually Putin was following the Ukraine model where they beat up on the UAF as the UAF was totally unprepared for a major armor offensive and thus forced Ukraine into Minsk 2...now with the fighting experience, rearming and retraining for two years the UAF is literally stopping every major Russian ground push and the actual Russian military loses are mounting rapidly....and Russia does not have a "frozen front"...right now it is truly a "hot front" with Russian regulars being killed and wounded and no ground being gained.

Fighters on the ground claim #JaN seized a T-90 command tank in southern #Aleppo last week -but no pics so farJust a JAN claim.

That said, Jund al-Aqsa - which is no part of the JAN since February - launched a lonesome offensive on al-Ghab Plain, three days ago. So, don't get distracted by all the Twitters reporting 'militants', 'rebels' etc. breached the ceasefire: they didn't.

But Jund's Chechen Jihadists - who were never a part of the cease-fire - well, kind of 'did'.

Initially, they've suffered quite some losses - including at least two MBTs and several technicals. That encouraged the SSNP (that is: SSNP's battalions that fight as '11th Division SAA') to launch a counterattack yesterday: this not only failed miserably, but resulted in (usual) heavy losses.

Two of Jund's VBIEDs later (here is one of them, on Jund's Twitter account (https://twitter.com/JondAqsa6/status/721981384387072000)), the Chechens are making advances today. Even Assad-fans confirm they've taken Kirbet an-Narqus (south-west of Kfar Zita).

One of the piles of nonsense one can read there is:

'Sporadic air strikes'?

It's now since weeks that the Ra'astan-Talbiseh Pocket (RTP) is heavily bombed. Regime insisted on never including it into the cease-fire, supposedly because it's 'held by the JAN'. Actually because southern frontline of the RTP is already inside northern suburbs of Homs. But foremost: Ra'astan is the epicentre of armed uprising against Assads, and the birthplace of several clans (including that of the Tlass) that turned against the butcher, already back in 2011-2012.

So, if this is 'sporadic bombardment'... sigh... and considering the number of reports about air strikes elsewhere in Syria of the last few days (less than 4-5 a day, and then primarily against the JAN in al-Eis area), then one is only left to wonder: what would 'intensive air strikes' look like...?

But, at least we get to hear that the insurgents in the RTP have launched a number of raids on villages east of this area, i.e. along the road from Hama to Salamiyah. Given how little is known about the exact extension of the frontlines there, but also that it's known the regime's frontlines are primarily held by BPM's reservists, I wouldn't be surprised if they have actually captured some of places in question. So, no surprise if Assadists and Russians are beasty about the RTP, and very keen to exterminate everybody there.

Next piece of nonsense is this:

Currently, Free Syrian Army (FSA) battalions are more present in the western Homs pocket while extremist forces such as the al-Nusra Front have transformed the eastern cities of ar-Rastan and Talbisah into Islamist strongholds.
This is an outright lie - if not an attempt to hush-up intentional bombardment of civilians in the RTP. Namely, the most fiercely bombed part of the RTP are Talbiseh and Tel Maella, two towns in the south of the RTP held by the Liwa 313 and Harakat Tahrir Homs - both of which are FSyA. Ra'astan is held by the Authenticity and Development Front (FSyA).

Western parts of the RTP - around the town of Houla - are held by the AAS/IF's Jaysh al-Islam. They are 'sporadically bombed', indeed.

It's about a dozen of villages in the eastern part of the RTP - in the hills above Salamiyah - that are held by the JAN. However, these are NOT bombed by Assadists or Russians at all.
