Congressional Democrats had wanted President Bush to admit in his speech on the Iraq war that his policy had failed. But the president, obviously did not do that. Mr. Bush instead followed the advice of Virginia Republican Sen. John Warner.

Mr. Warner, a World War II Veteran and former Army secretary, told viewers of the Sunday morning talk shows that the president should tell the truth about successes and failures in Iraq and explain the difficulties in winning the peace there in a Franklin Delano Roosevelt-esque fireside chat.

The chat, which was neither warm nor held at night when most viewers could see it, was instead held this morning as an address at the U.S. Naval Academy. Despite this misstep, Mr. Bush said the right things...
