Over 1,200 terrorists including 30 suicide bombers ready to attack Aleppo from south-west, the Russian General Staff said.The Russian General Staff said that terrorists used the humanitarian pause in Syria's Aleppo to receive reinforcements to prepare new attacks outskirts of Aleppo.

The Russian general said that militants in Aleppo continue to receive arms and ammunition, including portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS).

All humanitarian corridors that should be used by civilians and militants to leave Aleppo are blocked by terrorists, Rudskoy said. The corridors are constantly under militants' fire, he added. "Militants continue to launch attacks from mortars and rocket systems on residential neighborhoods in the western part of Aleppo, including humanitarian corridors.

Over the past 24 hours, eight have been killed and over 30 wounded in militants' fire. As a result of one of the attacks 3 officers of the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation were lightly injured." He added that "yesterday [on Thursday] Ahrar ash-Sham militants have publicly executed 14 local officials for calling on civilians to used corridors to leave eastern parts of Aleppo."

"Despite this eight injured Ahrar ash-Sham militants left eastern Aleppo on the first day of the humanitarian pause. They were provided with medical assistance." Russia has extended the humanitarian pause in the city one more day from 08:00 to 19:00 local time on October 22, Rudskoy said.


Russia and Putin are now in panic mode and intently looking over their shoulder at the potential strong sanctions coming at them from the EU especially after the UN statements AND if they resume their a la Gronzy destruction of Aleppo....

THEY HAVE EXTENDED their ceasefire another 24 hours...HOPING to deflect the EU and the UN by doing nothing.....AND IMHO they are waiting to see just how far FSA and TAF go in their current attacks.....

Azor....CrowBat will probably agree with me......while everyone including Assad and Putin are so focused on Aleppo JaF, Sham and other top FSA groups indicated in a public statement early last week that they will taking back Aleppo...then the Russians went into a la Gronzy in superdrive and the message got lost in chatter.....but if one notices all groups have gone quiet.

Right now Assad does not have the troops necessary to fully win so he is picking the battles and racing the rest around Syria...right now I count over four different combat front wars in progress each being fought separately which actually is effectively keeping Assad off balance manpower wise.

If Putin and the West had seriously taken Erdogan's statements at face value then the YPG/PKK would not have been so surprised by the air strikes and artillery strikes placed on them yesterday by the TAF.....

TAF/FSA and US SF under the guise of taking al Bab have in fact inched ever closer to Aleppo and are now within artillery range which FSA immediately put to use....thus Assad regime troops are basically now faced with a two front Aleppo war.....

Actually SWJ had a really good article on the Turkish CAM being used inside Syria....

You will have noticed that the forces inside Aleppo have effectively blocked all attempts to take any solid area from them, and those outside have completely retaken 1070 placing them in position to open a corridor again and in the process beat up badly Hezbollah....

In some aspects now Putin is boxed in sanctions wise...if he continues destroying Aleppo he gets hit with them, if not then FSA is in the back of Assad forces in Aleppo along with TAF and the Turkish AF that the RuAF has not challenged nor will they as that would be a direct attack on a NATO partner who is fighting IS on the ground for them....sanctions will also probably come anyway due to the total over all war crimes he has committed in Syria per se ie destroying hospitals and deliberately attacking civilians with cluster munitions, cluster incendiary munitions, thermobaric bombs, napalm, and now bunker buster munitions.

Having said that, it is clear that the former JaN wants to embed itself with the FSA and the latter requires all the help that it can get given that the SyAF and RuAF can strike with impunity.

If Putin is able to neutralize the moderate/secular (egalitarian v. supremacist) elements of the FSA and other armed opposition units, then he has won a victory of sorts and can count on Western support that results in Assad remaining in power and Iran clinging on to both Baghdad and Damascus.

The Western "upside" of this is that Iran and Russia are both ground down by Sunni Arab supremacist insurgencies and neither Lebanon, Iraq or Syria are available as assets to Iran, just like Ukraine is no longer a Russian asset...

Aleppo is his final "rabbit tunnel" that he has been sucked into ......there was nothing less embarrassing yesterday when the grand Russian scheme of so called humanitarian corridors with great Russian/western MSM propaganda fanfare totally failed and failed in front of the entire world.......First it was an 11 hour ceasefire...no one crossed over...THEN it was another 24 hour ceasefire STILL no one crossed over and NOW it is "hey if you do not attack us" it will be in place forever.....BUT not a single humanitarian aid convoy has been allowed in yet so he wants still the destruction of all anti Assad forces as his goal....all the while TAF/FSA are ever so slowly moving towards Aleppo which while not directly attacking YET places a massive roadblock in Russian planning for Aleppo....they have to contend with in their world view "jihadists inside Aleppo, jihadists coming at them from the rear and from the outside front.....a nightmare for them IMHO...

JaN now JFS has it's own problems but as long as not a single western country stands nor does the UN protect Syrian civilians JFS will be viewed by Syrian Sunni's as their "savior" in time of need...when the complete West failed them......

General Petraeus wrote in SWJ awhile back and caught heavy incoming from readers...we should actually be engaging AQ ...."JFS" in an open dialogue...he is right JFS is learning the hard way since taking in JAA that they are still answerable to the Syria civil society and that is something they are not use to...but they have shown over the last l=year of deep debates that they can learn and are trying to be open about it.

Syrian Sunni's are largely secular in nature not Salafist....and can/do tolerate Salafists that is something JFS is slowly learning and that is not a bad thing...

Earlier on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on all the countries who could influence the militants in Aleppo to urge them to allow access to the city to international humanitarian missions.

"The ICRC has been trying to convince the representatives of the key armed groups (al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham) to allow access to eastern Aleppo to evacuate the wounded. There are hundreds of injured. The militants set a condition for giving access [to the area], [they] demand medical supplies and medical treatment of militants," the source told RIA Novosti.

Militants Launch Mortar Attack on Civilians Preparing to LeaveAleppo has become the scene of ferocious battle between the Syrian Army and the militants holding the city's eastern districts, with many international organizations voicing their concern for the civilian population trapped in a war-torn city.

The Russian and Syrian governments agreed to stop airstrikes on Islamist fighters controlling parts of Aleppo starting Thursday to ensure the safe evacuation of unarmed militants, and civilians from eastern Aleppo via eight designated corridors. The Russian General Staff said earlier that the humanitarian pause in Aleppo has been extended for one day, from 08:00 to 16:00 local time on October 22

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Laerke, it was impossible to begin the evacuation on Saturday morning, but the UN was working actively on obtaining the necessary security guarantees and was hoping for everybody's cooperation. "Medical evacuations of sick and wounded people and their immediate family members have still not been able to proceed this morning from eastern Aleppo. The UN remains hopeful that parties will provide all necessary guarantees and is actively working to that end," the spokesman said. Laerke also said that security in Aleppo was still seriously compromised and stressed the humanitarian organization's readiness to start the evacuation as soon as the conditions would allow for it.

John Allen, a retired U.S. Marine general, led the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013 and the international coalition to counter the Islamic State from 2014 to 2015. Charles R. Lister is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute and author of “The Syrian Jihad: Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State and the Evolution of an Insurgency.”

For 5½ years, the Syrian government has tortured, shot, bombed and gassed its own people with impunity, with the resulting human cost clear for all to see: nearly 500,000 dead and 11 million displaced. Since Russia’s military intervention began one year ago, conditions have worsened, with more than 1 million people living in 40 besieged communities. Thirty-seven of those are imposed by pro-government forces.
While subjecting his people to unspeakable medieval-style brutality, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sabotaged diplomatic initiatives aimed at bringing a lasting calm to his country. The most recent such diplomatic scheme was trashed not just by Assad, but also Russia, whose aircraft were accused of subjecting a U.N.-mandated aid convoy to a ferocious two-hour attack in September.
Since then, at least 2,500 people have been killed and wounded in eastern districts of Aleppo, amid horrendous bombardment by Syrian and Russian aircraft, and Russia cynically vetoed a U.N. resolution that would have prohibited further airstrikes in the city.

It is time for the United States to act more assertively on Syria, to further four justifiable objectives: to end mass civilian killing; to protect what remains of the moderate opposition; to undermine extremist narratives of Western indifference to injustice; and to force Assad to the negotiating table. The United States should not be in the business of regime change, but the Assad clique and its backers must be brought to account before it is too late. The world will not forgive us for our inaction.
The consequences of continued inaction are dreadful. U.S. policy has never sought to decisively influence the tactical situation on the ground. Unrealistic limitations on vetting and a policy that prohibited arming groups to fight the regime left us unable to effectively fight the Islamic State or to move Assad toward a transition. U.S. policy and strategy on Syria had a major disconnect, in being focused militarily on a group that was a symptom of the civil war without any means to achieve the stated policy objective: Assad’s departure.

The hole in this strategy could only have been filled by a comprehensive train-and-equip program for moderate Syrians to fight the Islamic State and decisively resist regime forces. Sadly, we have allowed this connective tissue between our counter-Islamic State strategy and our policy to remove Assad — the moderate Syrian opposition — to come under sustained attack by the regime and Russia.
For years we’ve said there can be no military outcome in Syria, but the Russians and their allies have pushed the military dimension of the crisis to strengthen the regime’s political position and, in the name of fighting “terrorism,” to systematically eliminate the opposition, including moderate Syrians we judged should be part of the political process of transitioning Assad out. These objectives were derived from our unwillingness to tangle with the regime, and now also the Russians.

The administration’s condemnation of Russia, and its forecast of a Vietnam-like morass for Moscow, seem a misunderstanding of Moscow’s calculus. Russia will determinedly protect its interests by any means, including attacking civilians and U.N. aid convoys. The expectation that Russia will tire of its Syria “quagmire” and become diplomatically pliable ignores reality. Russia has shown a remarkable capacity to dig in behind bad policy and fight under adversity. Ultimately, Vladi#mir Putin’s Russia must be — or at least seem to be — on the ascendancy, as it is in Ukraine, along NATO’s frontier, in Syria and even in Libya. Russia’s repaired relationship with Turkey and improved ties elsewhere further complicate U.S. policy.

Ultimately, this leaves us only two options. First, the United States should encourage and join its European allies in imposing an escalatory set of economic sanctions against Russia and bodies and individuals supporting its military and paramilitary activities in Syria, Ukraine and elsewhere.
The second option is one the Russians believe the United States will never do: Escalate the conflict. The United States must challenge the status quo and end the regime’s war crimes, by force if necessary. This need not require some major pronouncement. Indeed, for now, a quiet warning may be more effective, since a major public announcement would almost certainly polarize the situation further.

For a start, the United States must save Aleppo. Damascus, Moscow and Tehran are razing the city to prepare for an eventual ground assault. As both the CIA and Pentagon have concluded, an opposition loss in Aleppo would severely undermine the United States’ counterterrorism objectives in Syria. The city’s symbolism and strategic value are unmatched, and allowing it to fall would dramatically empower extremist narratives. Groups linked to al-Qaeda would reap the rewards of our shortcomings.

To save Aleppo, the United States and its allies must both accelerate and broaden the provision of lethal and nonlethal assistance to vetted moderate opposition groups. This assistance would aim to empower other frontlines in northern and southern Syria to force pro-regime forces to divert attention from Aleppo. Opposition groups should also be provided with the means to bombard regime military airfields, many of which already lie within indirect fire and artillery rocket range.

Simultaneously, the United States must use existing multilateral mechanisms to push for a new cessation of hostilities in Syria in which flagrant violations will be met with targeted U.S. military consequences. Should such an agreement prove impossible due to the likely intransigence from Damascus and its supporters, the United States should gather a “coalition of the willing” to credibly threaten military action against Assad’s military infrastructure.
Initiating such a sequence would almost certainly result in the eventual use of targeted, punitive force in Syria. Any action should target Syrian military facilities and assets involved in supporting the bombardment of civilians, such as military airfields, aircraft, weapons stores and artillery positions. We should expect the possible intentional co-mingling of Syrian and Russian forces and assets as a deterrent. While this may complicate targeting strategies, we should not miss the opportunity to hit offending Syrian elements and units, while sustaining counter-Islamic State operations elsewhere.

In addition, the United States should consider establishing and supporting a task force of regional Special Operations forces, which could play an advisory role in assisting vetted opposition groups in attacking regime assets.

The credibility of the United States as the leader and defender of the free world must be salvaged from the horrific devastation of Syria. It is not too late to enforce international law and norms. However, we cannot wait for a new administration in Washington. Events are moving too quickly. Bashar al-Assad is not the solution to the Syrian crisis, and he is the least-qualified possible partner in a fight against terrorism, having spent much of the past 16 years aiding and abetting al-Qaeda and, it would appear, the Islamic State as well. Action certainly presents risks, but to allow events to continue to unfold as they are means raising the cost yet further for a future, inevitable U.S. intervention.

Erbil#–#Turkey-backed rebels on Friday attacked positions held by the pro-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Tal Rafaat District. The Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) accused American officers of cooperating in the incursion.
Friday’s#attack was preceded by#Turkish airstrikes, which hit the villages of Um al-Housh, Um al-Qura#and#Hasiya in#Aleppo’s northern countryside. Ten SDF fighters and four civilians were killed, while dozens of others were wounded.
The Islamic State (ISIS) was pushed out of these villages in August and September as part of the SDF’s drive to reach al-Bab city. The People’s Protection Units (YPG), the lead force within the SDF, seeks to seize al-Bab and thereby connect Northern Syria – Rojava’s (NSR) canton administrations.
“Informed sources confirmed that the Turkey-backed attacks on#SDF positions today were supported by#American officers,” the PYD said in a statement on Friday.#
Speaking about Turkey’s air raids, US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter told reporters:#“We don’t yet fully know what transpired there. We’ll find out more as the days go on. I simply can’t give you any more than that now.”#
Earlier on Thursday, US State Department spokesperson John Kirby called on the Syrian rebels and the Kurds to stop fighting each other.#“We’ve called on all parties to refrain from uncoordinated movements and to focus, as I said earlier, on the common enemy, and the common enemy is Daesh,” he said.
“Both these Syrian forces and Turkey can and should operate inside the coalition, […] to focus on Daesh and not one another, and that’s what we want to see,” he said, employing an Arabic acronym for ISIS. “We don’t want to see any uncoordinated movements and these strikes would qualify as uncoordinated movements.”#
Two Sides, Diametrically Opposed
The immediate goal of the Turkey-backed rebels is to preempt Kurdish territorial ambitious by capturing the ISIS-held areas between Efrin and Manbij. Their latter goal is to open a new front against the Syrian Army and the Shia militias currently laying siege to eastern Aleppo city.
“The Euphrates Shield Operation will drive the YPG out of Tal Rifaat and the surrounding area before moving eastwards towards al-Bab,” Abdurahman Harkoush, a former spokesperson for the Army of Islam, said.
These goals are irreconcilable with the widely shared Kurdish desire#to establish#territorial contiguity in the NSR. Kurds across Turkey condemned Thursday’s airstrikes and Friday’s incursion.
“While Turkey can and should have a crucial role in fighting ISIS, the attacks of the Turkish Army and its local allies on the SDF are providing ISIS#with fresh air,” Hisyar Ozsoy, Vice Co-chair of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), told ARA News.#
“Turkey has been carrying out aggressive policies to undermine [the SDF],” Ozsoy stated. “By sacrificing the peace process with the Kurds [in Turkey] and initiating militarist policies against the Kurds in Syria, who constitute the backbone of the SDF, Turkey is foreclosing the possibilities of a peaceful future and political stability.”
[I]According to#Michael Stephens, the head of the Royal United Services Institute – Qatar, the US did not cooperate in Turkey’s attacks on the SDF.
“Basically [this is] a warning sign to the YPG; If you try to join the cantons we’ll make you pay,” Stephens told ARA News. “The two sides, [Turkey-backed rebels and the pro-Kurdish SDF], have no interest in talking. Ultimately it’s a disagreement between two sides that are diametrically opposed.”
Turkey’s Target is the Self-Administration
Tensions in Northern Aleppo Governorate have reached a fever pitch. According to Stephens, the SDF and Turkey’s rebel factions “are only able to talk through military means. What you’re seeing is the geopolitics playing out in the micro.”
Nawaf Khalil, a former PYD#spokesman#and head of the Rojava Centre for Strategic Studies, told ARA News that#Turkey views#all Kurds as enemies, regardless of their relations with Iraqi Kurdistan.
Khalil shares a widespread belief that Ankara and Moscow have been cooperating to cripple Syrian Kurdish forces. “There has been a deal between Russia and Turkey to hit the Kurds, and destroy the insurgency in Aleppo,” he said.#
Khalil told ARA News: “Turkey says it openly; their target is the [NSR] Self-Administration, and [their aim] is to prevent the unification of Efrin and Kobani.”

A massive and sustained Internet attack that has caused outages and network congestion#today for a large number of Web sites was launched with the help of hacked “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices, such as CCTV video#cameras and digital video recorders, new data suggests.
Earlier today cyber criminals began training their attack cannons on Dyn, an Internet infrastructure company that provides critical technology services to some of the Internet’s top destinations. The attack began creating problems for Internet users reaching an array of sites, including Twitter, Amazon, Tumblr, Reddit, Spotify and Netflix.

At first, it was unclear who or what was behind the attack on Dyn.#But over the past few hours, at least one computer security firm has#come out saying the attack involved Mirai, the same malware strain that was used in the record 620 Gpbs attack on my site last month. At the end September 2016, the hacker responsible for creating the Mirai malware released the source code for it, effectively letting anyone build their own attack army using Mirai.

Mirai scours the Web for IoT devices protected by little more than factory-default usernames and passwords, and then enlists the devices in attacks that hurl junk traffic at an online target until it can no longer accommodate legitimate visitors or users.
According to researchers at security firm Flashpoint, today’s attack was launched at least in part by a Mirai-based botnet. Allison Nixon, director of research at Flashpoint, said the botnet used in today’s ongoing attack is built on the backs of hacked IoT devices — mainly compromised digital video recorders (DVRs) and IP cameras made by a Chinese hi-tech company called#XiongMai Technologies. The components that#XiongMai makes#are sold downstream to vendors who then use it in their own products.

“It’s remarkable that virtually an entire company’s product line has just been turned into a botnet that is now attacking the United States,” Nixon said, noting that Flashpoint hasn’t ruled out the possibility of multiple botnets being involved in the attack on Dyn.

“At least one Mirai [control server] issued an attack command to hit Dyn,” Nixon said. “Some people are theorizing that there were multiple botnets involved here. What we can say is that we’ve seen a Mirai botnet participating in the attack.”

As I noted earlier this month in#Europe to Push New Security Rules Amid IoT Mess, many of these products from XiongMai and other makers of inexpensive, mass-produced IoT devices are essentially unfixable, and will remain a danger to others unless and until they are completely unplugged from the Internet.



Earlier this month a hacker released the source code for Mirai, a malware strain that was used to launch a historically large 620 Gbps denial-of-service attack against this site in September. That attack came in apparent retribution for a story#here#which directly#preceded#the arrest of two Israeli men for allegedly running#an online attack for hire service called vDOS. Turns out, the site where the Mirai source code was leaked had some very interesting things in common with the place vDOS called home.

The domain name where the Mirai source code was originally placed for download —#santasbigcandycane[dot]cx — is registered at the same domain name registrar that was used to register the now-defunct DDoS-for-hire service vdos-s[dot]com.

WHEN he could have seriously changed the events in Syria in 2012...he chocked and did nothing, WHEN he could have again changed events with his "red line...he basically chocked and when he could have changed the events of war crimes, starvation and genocide he chocked badly and is now seen as being just as complicit in war crimes, starvation and genocide as is Putin.......

THE core question that seriously needs to be asked is why would a sitting Us President actually support and direct a US FP policy that enabled the rise of Russia and the decline of the US in the realm of global FP AND WHY is he so dead set on tying the hands of the incoming President to that FP????

The thing about military strategies, an American general said recently, is that they tend to crumble once soldiers begin to engage the enemy. This can apply to the Mosul strategy: protracted fighting could lead to the collapse of a relatively promising strategy to expel the group from its most significant stronghold.

As the battle for Mosul began last Monday, many wondered whether ISIL would stay to defend the city or choose to live to fight another day. After all, the determination of Iraqi forces and their international allies to expel the group from the country’s second largest city means the outcome is almost certain, even if the stronghold is a symbolic and strategic priority for ISIL.

The group chose to withdraw in Fallujah when it became apparent it was overwhelmed militarily, while it fought until the end in Ramadi and Manbij.

The binary choice, however, may not apply to Mosul. ISIL will, most likely, choose to fight until the end. But even if it does not do so, the alternative will not be withdrawal to preserve its forces. Instead, it will probably fight in the hope that the current strategy – built on delicate sectarian, ethnic and political balances – unravels.

The group will choose this path because the stakes for it in this battle are too high. If the current composition of Iraqi forces fighting ISIL expel it from Mosul with relative speed and minimal damage to the city, the win could be a true game-changer for the country and the future of the group. If we know one thing about ISIL, it is that it will not allow this to happen. Typically, it excels at political tradecraft rather than military operations. This ability will be brought to bear in the defining battle for Mosul.

So far, Iraqi forces appear to have the upper hand. The division of labour in the battle and the demand for Kurdish and Shia militias to stay out of Mosul proper are encouraging signs that a victory will have far-reaching consequences for the group. Yet, will the current strategy hold? What happens if the battle drags on for several months? Will the forces continue to show restraint? What if professional forces inside the city feel compelled to seek the help of militias fighting in the vicinity?

The forces fighting on different fronts against ISIL around Mosul are the definition of strange bedfellows. Competing agendas in an area seen as vital for each side to ensure their long-term interests mean that it will be only a matter of time before rivalries start to cause trouble. This trouble might be minor for the overall battle, but it could be disruptive.

Iraqi forces expect the fight to end soon. If the battle drags on, overconfidence can turn into frustration and overreaction. As The Washington Post reported on Friday, Iraqi forces on the front lines are complaining about the slow and sparse close-air support provided by the United States-led coalition. Tal Afar, north-west of Mosul, could become a flashpoint. Turkey continues to insist on having a role in the battle, as Shia militias operating under the banner of Hashd Al Shaabi seem set to launch an attack to retake the city.

Hawija is emerging as another issue for the international coalition. The city is an ISIL stronghold that many wanted liberated before Mosul given its location west of Kirkuk. There are disagreements between Kurdish and Shia militias over who fights in the city. Leaders of Hashd Al Shaabi visited Kirkuk on Saturday to discuss the issue with Kurdish officials, especially after ISIL stormed into Kirkuk and clashed with the Kurdish peshmerga in half a dozen locations inside the city.

The security firm RSA revealed to have discovered in early October, hackers advertising access to a huge IoT botnet on an underground criminal forum.

Last week, a massive DDoS attack against the#Dyn DNS service,#one of the most authoritative#domain name system (DNS), caused an extended Internet#outage. A large portion of internet users was not able to reach most important web services, many websites including Twitter, GitHub, PayPal, Amazon, Reddit, Netflix, and Spotify were down for netizens in the US.

The Dyn DNS Service was flooded by a devastating wave of requests originated by million of compromised#IoT devices. The Dyn company reported a huge army of hijacked Internet of Things devices has been abused by attackers to power the massive DDoS attack.

The security intelligence firm Flashpoint#published an interesting post on the massive DDoS in which confirm that its experts have observed the#Mirai#bots driving the attack against DynDNS.

“Flashpoint has confirmed that some of the infrastructure responsible for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Dyn DNS were botnets compromised by Mirai malware. Mirai botnets were previously used in DDoS attacks against security researcher Brian Krebs’ blog “Krebs On Security” and French internet service and hosting provider OVH.” reads the analysis published by#Flashpoint#“Mirai malware targets Internet of Things (IoT) devices like routers, digital video records (DVRs), and webcams/security cameras, enslaving vast numbers of these devices into a botnet, which is then used to conduct DDoS attacks. “

Flashpoint has confirmed that some of the infrastructure responsible for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Dyn DNS were botnets compromised by Mirai malware.

Mirai botnets were previously used in DDoS attacks against the “Krebs On Security” blog and OVH.

As of 1730 EST, the attacks against Dyn DNS are still ongoing. Flashpoint is coordinating with multiple vendors and law enforcement to track the infected devices that constitute the botnet being used to conduct these attacks.
Unfortunately, the situation could be worse because#hackers are selling access to a#huge botnet#composed of compromised#Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

“This is the first time we’ve seen an IoT botnet up for rent or sale, especially one boasting that amount of firepower. It’s definitely a worrying#trend seeing#the DDoS capabilities grow,” Daniel Cohen, head of the#RSA’s FraudAction business unit,#told Forbes.

According to RSA the#hackers advertised an IoT botnet that is able to power DDoS attack with a#1 Tbps of traffic, the same volume of traffic that flooded the#French hosting provider OVH. It is not clear if the botnet was composed of devices infected by the Mirai malware.

The hackers were offering a botnet composed of 50,000 devices for $4,600, meanwhile 100,000 bots#the price is $7,500.

We worry about the election....here comes the next generation of extortion and blackmail against virtually anyone/business having an internet presence...they no longer have to hack into you network...all they have to do is effectively block say your online shopping portal to cause millions in loses just in several days of outage....

What about the day to day critical infrastructure that makes up our daily lives...power, water, gas....traffic lights....you need no longer to hack into their networks...just block their internet servers....

DDoS has evolved into a serious threat with dark net firms offering their services for hire....

A rebel commander says the Turkish-rebel offensive on the Kurdish militia YPG has been called off.
Abu Firas of the Sham Front said the move on the town of Tel Rifaat was cancelled because of “international matters”.
Turkey carried out airstrikes on YPG positions inside Syria for the first time last Wednesday, and the Free Syrian Army and other units began ground attacks on Friday.

However, on Friday the US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter visited Ankara. Washington supported the YPG-led Syrian Democratic Front, which has been pushing back the Islamic State last autumn.
Abu Firas said the Turkish-rebel force would now look towards the ISIS-held town of al-Bab, northeast of Aleppo city.
The YPG, the military branch of the Syrian Kurdistan Democratic Union Party (PYD), and rebels have battled since last year. In early 2016 the YPG took opposition territory, including Tel Rifaat, in northern Aleppo Province.
Turkey considers the PYD and YPG to be part of the Turkish Kurdish insurgency PKK

IoT Device Maker Vows Product Recall, Legal Action Against Western Accusers



A Chinese electronics firm pegged by experts as responsible for making many of the components leveraged in last week’s massive attack that disrupted Twitter and dozens of popular Web sites has vowed to recall some of its vulnerable products. Meanwhile, the Chinese government is#threatening legal action against this publication and others for allegedly tarnishing#the company’s brand.

Last week’s attack on online infrastructure provider Dyn was launched at least in part by Mirai, a now open-source malware strain that scans the Internet for routers, cameras, digital video recorders and other Internet of Things “IoT” devices protected only by the factory-default passwords. Once infected with Mirai, the IoT systems can be used to flood a target with so much junk Web traffic that the target site can no longer accommodate legitimate users or visitors.

In an interim report on the attack, Dyn said: “We can confirm,#with the help of analysis from Flashpoint and Akamai, that one source of the traffic for the attacks were devices infected by the Mirai botnet. We observed 10s of millions of discrete IP addresses associated with the Mirai botnet that were part of the attack.”

As a result of that attack, one of the most-read stories on KrebsOnSecurity so far this year is “Who Makes the IoT Things Under Attack?“, in which I tried to match default passwords sought out by the Mirai malware with IoT hardware devices for sale on the commercial market today.

In a follow-up to that story, I interviewed researchers at Flashpoint who discovered that one of the default passwords sought by machines infected with Mirai — username: root and password: xc3511 — is embedded in a broad array of white-labeled DVR and IP camera electronics boards made by a Chinese company called#XiongMai Technologies. These components are sold downstream to vendors who then use them in their own products.

The scary part about IoT products that include XiongMai’s various electronics components, Flashpoint found, was that while users could change the default credentials in the devices’ Web-based administration panel, the password is hardcoded into the device firmware and the tools needed to disable it aren’t present.

In a statement issued on social media#Monday, XiongMai (referring to itself as “XM”) said it would be issuing a recall on millions of#devices — mainly network cameras.

“Mirai is a huge disaster for the Internet of Things,” the company said in a separate statement emailed to journalists. “XM have to admit that our products also suffered from hacker’s break-in and illegal use.”

NOTE....the hacker did not illegally use the XM hardware...he simply exploited a failure in their design/coding ...he did not create anything new....XM was savings costs and future upgrade costs and responsibilities PROBABLY assuming they would not get caught at it....CORE QUESTION how did he even know of the design/firmware coding failures????

NOTE:...both the Chinese government and XM are simply sidestepping the core question of who knew about this technical backdoor that allowed a Israeli/Russia to develop specifically a Trojan?

SECONDLY....notice XM says it will only recall SOME of the affected IoT devices....NOT all....so basically the problem still is there.....

BTW....I spoke recently with a German manufacturer of similar hardware and spoke about the impossibility to upgrade and or patch firmware on that hardware device...he just smiled and said yes "he knew about the problem"........

Actually I was fishing for his response about the "problem" two months before the first IoT DDoS attack....and he owns a Chinese company producing similar devices as does XM......SO the Chinese manufacturing industries must have been talking about the problem before I bought it up....SO the Chinese security services ALSO knew of the problem.


Brian Karas, a business analyst with#IPVM#— a subscription-based news, testing and training site for the video surveillance industry — said that#over the past five years China’s market share in the video surveillance industry has surged, due to the efforts of companies like XiongMai and Dahua to expand globally, and from the growth of government-controlled security company Hikvision.
Karas said the recent Mirai botnet attacks have created “extreme concerns about the impact of Chinese video surveillance products.” Nevertheless, #he said, the threats against those the company accuses of issuing false statements are more about saving face.
“We believe Xiongmai has issued this announcement as a PR effort within China, to help counter criticisms they are facing,” Karas wrote. “We do not believe that Xiongmai or the Ministry of Justice is seriously going to sue any Western companies as this is a typical tactic to save face.”

Imagine the ability of the Chinese state sponsored ability to view over your shoulder everything your own video surveillance equipment is providing ESPECIALLY if installed in "sensitive facilities"????

NOW you can see just why IS told it's field operatives in Europe to tape over all computer cameras..........

Moscow not only 'followed in fashion': the core of the Soviet/Russian COIN doctrine is complete destruction of any such authorities. That's why they bombed about 6 million of Afghans out of their country, back in the 1980s, and that's why they bombed millions of Chechens out of their country, back in 1990s-2000s.

Means: what Assadists are doing is to actually stick to Soviet/Russian COIN doctrine. And therefore, conclusion is unavoidable that the Russians continued the practice.

Like Assadists, they identified such authorities - and not the Daesh or the ex-JAN/now-NFS - as 'critical danger for Assad regime'.

Because such authorities are clear evidence that Syrians can organize themselves on their own (without Assad), and can run 'normal life' (even under given circumstances) without turning into hordes of beasty extremists.

CrowBat ...you bring up some interesting comments that tie into the to US/Russian Atlas Vision military exercises held in 2012 and 2013....the Russians were extremely interested in our targeting processes and how that was tied to the intel cycle as well as our logistical processes...during both exercises while the Russian staff officers participated actively they would refrain from the decision making process and simply watch the US staff officers...ie learning by observing was their motto...they were extremely interested in understanding the Us military decision making process as they saw the speed value in it and the ability t change directions if something dictated a sudden change based on the targeting and intel cycles....

What was interesting is that a full five years after the last US/Russian exercise (2007) suddenly the Russian MoD wanted to pull one together inside three months after a five year period of complete radio silence ....there was an unusual urgency to that first request from their side that the US did not question...

If you think about it there have been some Ukrainian commenters saying that the military moves into Crimea and eastern Ukraine planning wise went back to as early as 2010/2011 maybe even as early as 2009.

Secondly, the Russian BN Cmdrs assigned to the Peacekeeping Bde staff came from those actual BNs assigned to the Bde....in the peacekeeping scenario we has extreme difficulty in getting those BNs to refrain from simply gunning down all civilians in the scenario is they were say outside a building and peacefully demonstrating fro and or against something...several times the BN Cmdr would be chastised in Russian for having said kill them all in front of the US officers....they then usually remained quiet the rest of the exercise....but did they change their opinions?...heck no.....

The Russian staff while all proud that they had "reformed" their decision making model since AFG....still had every Cmdr down to the Company level physically signing the Bde operational orders......this is a legal thing in the Russian army thus no wonder no one wants to change the plan without the top command changing first...and then signing off...AND that does definitely not enhance speed or independent thinking...

So yes they might have reformed the military, have now contract personnel and have better officer and NCO schools......better equipment..... .BUT the military/targeting decision making process is still 300% Soviet.....that has not changed one inch.....

BTW...that is why the Russian Military Academy/Russian MoD General Staff wanted the US decision making process and all orders/report formats translated into Russian for the exercise and we then even attempted to match it to a Russian military term...hard at times...so the officers could understand.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday it would extend a moratorium on air strikes on the Syrian city of Aleppo, but did not specify for how long.
Russia said earlier on Tuesday that Russian and Syrian military planes had not launched air strikes on Aleppo since Oct. 18, contradicting reports that air strikes in some areas of the city had resumed on Saturday.

Russia's Interfax news agency reported earlier that a "humanitarian pause" in Aleppo would be extended by three hours, but a defense ministry statement later clarified that extension related to a ceasefire on Oct. 20 and not to air strikes.

"The moratorium on air strikes by the Russian and Syrian air forces around (Aleppo) will be extended," the ministry said in the statement, saying it meant Russian and Syrian planes would continue to stay out of a 10 kilometer zone around Aleppo.

It said it was also ready to organize more ceasefires on the ground in Aleppo to allow wounded civilians to be evacuated.

By refusing to intervene more decisively in Syria, President Barack Obama claimed to have finally broken with the “Washington playbook” – his term for the foreign policy establishment’s faith in the efficacy of military force.

Refusing to follow the playbook is at once source of pride for the president and a source of ongoing outrage for critics across the political spectrum.

However, looking back to the 1990s, it seems Obama is actually hewing fairly closely to the playbook that ultimately led Washington to intervene in Yugoslavia’s civil war. This is not a playbook that demands immediate military intervention, but one that has Washington spending several years desperately trying to avoid it, while still investing just enough diplomatically and rhetorically to make the eventual use of force inevitable.

In the Balkans, it took four years from the time Serb and Croat forces first began fighting in 1991 to the start of the NATO air campaign that finally brought an uneasy end to the fighting. During this period, two successive presidential administrations sought to keep America out of a conflict where they saw little public support or strategic rationale for getting involved. In a differently configured but not dissimilar political climate, many isolationist voters insisted that the United States should not serve as the world’s policeman, while internationalist realists like Secretary of State James Baker famously declared of the conflict, “We do not have a dog in this fight.”

By all respect for all of his knowledge about transnational Wahhabists (aka Jihadists) in Syria, Lister is meanwhile seriously annoying.

Namely, the ONLY reason why 'Jihadists are already gaining & spoiling' is that NOBODY ELSE is helping Syrians - whether insurgents or civilians. On the contrary: since the West is letting Qataris provide the necessary funding, and even Russians DO NOT BOMB the JFS (while they and Assadists are bombing even clearly marked and well-known UN convoys) this can afford buying and then hauling food and other supplies from Turkey to Idlib and/or Aleppo, and distributing it to locals.

If anybody else would do this instead of the JFS, Syrians would be more than happy to accept. But, nobody is doing that.

This is something 'even' Lister never clearly says (and I'll not talk about all the others).

On the contrary: since the West is letting Qataris provide the necessary funding, and even Russians DO NOT BOMB the JFS (while they and Assadists are bombing even clearly marked and well-known UN convoys) this can afford buying and then hauling food and other supplies from Turkey to Idlib and/or Aleppo, and distributing it to locals.

If anybody else would do this instead of the JFS, Syrians would be more than happy to accept. But, nobody is doing that.

Symantec’s Security Response team has discovered that cybercriminals are hijacking home networks and everyday consumer connected devices to help carry out DDoS attacks on more profitable targets, usually large companies.

To succeed, they need cheap bandwidth and get it by stitching together a large web of consumer devices that are easy to infect because they lack sophisticated security. IoT devices are a prime target, since they are designed to be plugged in and forgotten after basic set-up.

“The results of the survey are unsurprising, and something security experts have been talking about for a while. IoT devices are proliferating at an incredible rate, many of them delivered by companies with little experience in hardening devices against attack. As a result, they’re falling victim to simple attacks that rely on very poor security in the device.

It’s like security ground-hog day – we’re going to have re-learn all the lessons of the last decade and apply them to a new class of device, quickly.

If we don’t, we’re going to be presenting hackers with oceanic quantities of free computing resource ready to be used for anything from spam email services to massive DDoS attacks against critical infrastructure,” Geoff Webb, Vice President of Solution Strategy, Micro Focus, told Help Net Security.

According to his observations from a physical test situation and analysis from peer-reviewed industry research, these devices pose significant risk to the enterprise because the majority of them are not built with embedded security. Of the devices that were outfitted with rudimentary security, Kamkar’s analysis revealed many were found to be operating with dangerously outdated firmware.

Additionally, research included a physical hack into an enterprise-grade, network-based security camera. Entirely unmodified and running the latest firmware from the manufacturer, the camera proved itself vulnerable and ultimately allowed for the planting of a backdoor entryway that could be controlled outside the network. Key findings

The identified seven IoT devices can be hacked in as little as three minutes, but can take days or weeks to remediate.

Should any of these devices become infected, hackers can plant backdoors to create and launch an automated IoT botnet DDoS attack.

Cybercriminals can leverage jamming or spoofing techniques to hack smart enterprise security systems, enabling them to control motion sensors, locks and surveillance equipment.

With VoIP phones, exploiting configuration settings to evade authentication can open opportunities for snooping and recording of calls.

Via connected HVAC systems and energy meters, hackers can force critical rooms (e.g. server rooms) to overheat critical infrastructure and ultimately cause physical damage.

The IoT footprint continues to expand, showing little to no signs of slowing down. Analyst firm Gartner predicts that 20 billion connected devices will be deployed by 2020, with as many as a third of these sitting unknowingly vulnerable on enterprise, government, healthcare and industrial networks around the globe. In turn, hackers are now easily able to pivot on insecure devices into the secure network, and ultimately access other enterprise systems that could store bank account information, personnel files or proprietary business information.

It is nearly zero hour, and Syrian rebels are girding for a decisive assault on Aleppo, which they say could decide the outcome of the war.

Thousands of fighters from a range of militias are heading north from the rebel's stronghold in Idlib ready to take part in the assault.#

Dozens of vehicles have been converted into#suicide#VBIEDs#or car bombs to pave way for the#first phase of the attack by 600 specially trained "storm troopers".

If they are successful and break the regime's siege of east Aleppo, they could well rout the regime from the whole city, and secure northern Syria for the opposition.

If they fail, Aleppo will almost certainly fall into the regime's hands and the future for the Syrian opposition will look very bleak indeed.

"The fight for Aleppo will be the final battle," one rebel fighter told The New Arab.

In a sudden shift on 19 October, the Turkish-led Euphrates Shield operation moved on the town of Tal Rifaat in northern Aleppo, held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), instead of its original plan to seize the city of al-Bab from the Islamic State group.

As long as there is no solid agreement between Turkey and the Syrian Kurds on how to coexist, a military confrontation is inevitable

The offensive resulted in dozens of casualties as Turkish warplanes and artillery fired on Kurdish targets. This attack was later suspended on 24 October in order to pursue the original goal of capturing al-Bab.

Although military confrontations between Turkey and Syrian Kurds are expected, the exact reasons for these sudden changes remain largely unclear.

Alliances and enmities

The Turkish-backed offensive, a coalition of Syrian rebel groups supported by Turkish troops, was#launched#on 24 August to take the border town of#Jarablus#and hamper both SDF and IS aims in northern Syria.
Turkey is worried that advances by Syrian Kurdish fighters will embolden Kurdish militants in its own southeast, where it has been fighting an insurgency for three decades led by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).#
