As this 'Phase 2' of the JAF offensive on Western Aleppo is still in the process, here a small discourse on its tactics.

By now it seems that each assault is starting with ATGM-attacks - like this one (https://twitter.com/QalaatAlMudiq/status/794156387727265793). These are aiming to knock out Assadist and IRGC's ATGM-teams before these can knock out SVBIEDs.

There follows artillery preparation (primarily by BM-21s (https://twitter.com/QalaatAlMudiq/status/794149013046095872), but tube artillery too). Obviously, artillery preparation aims to force defenders down, cause shock and confusion - and, if possible, losses too.

Artillery preparation is providing good cover for approach of SVBIEDs. This morning at least 4 of these (https://twitter.com/ahlalshami/status/794159048702595072) were unleashed, apparently including two against New Aleppo and two against District 3000. SVBIEDs are delivering something like 'main punch': their drivers are advised to find and target major fortified strongholds or HQs, and they pack a massive punch (reportedly, some are loaded with up to 15,000kg of explosives).

Right after artillery preparation and SVBIEDs there follow 'waves of infantry', sort of. Actually, the first of this is supported by MBTs and brought straight to the foothold of enemy frontlines by 'BMP-busses', as seen this example from Zenghis (https://twitter.com/halabinasser1/status/794122444911104000), this morning.

This is the crucial moment of each assault, and one of elements decisive for its success is precisely this use of BMPs to - really QUICK - cover the 'no-man's-land' between JAF's and Assadist/IRGC's positions, and deploy the infantry right at the 'foothold' of the first Assadist/IRGC line of defence. The speed is as decisive because the sooner the BMPs reach the enemy lines, the more likely it is that the defenders are still 'under impression' (preferably, 'in state of shock') of artillery preparation and SVBIEDs. That makes them unlikely to offer strong resistance (on the contrary: most just flee).

All of this in turn is the reason why initial attacks of this kind are - usually - highly successful, and see the JAF Inghimasis regularly collapsing the first defence line, and then advancing quite deep behind.

But, if this manoeuvre fails (like this happened to Ajnad ash-Sham's assault on that 'Air Defence Hill' south of Aleppo, on 26 October, when involved T-72s and BMP-1s were hit by an apparently undetected ATGM-team of the IRGC in the flank)... then... sigh... 'outch'.

Interesting to note is that even in such, apparently, 'frontal' clashes like these assaults on New Aleppo and District 3000, the JAF is still attempting to manoeuvre, or at least assault from multiple directions. For example, there are reports (https://twitter.com/ahlalshami/status/794163941144305665) that the assault on District 3000 is a two-pronged affair, launched from al-Assad and from District 1070.

Of course, assaulting a build-up area is resulting in casualties, but with the application of this tactical procedure, these are actually kept at much lower levels than usually assessed.

What is usually decisive is what happens after all of this. The longer any such assault lasts, the more time the Assadists and the IRGC get to recover from the first shock, reinforce the second defensive line, and then bring their firepower to bear. The longer any such assault lasts, the more pressed is the JAF to rush reinforcements to the front and stabilize positions its Inghimasis have reached before the other side is able to bring its superior firepower to bear.

While 'relatively sophisticated', this tactics is also quite complex, and costly - especially in terms of SVBIEDs (and explosives they pack), but in terms of artillery support, too. This in turn is the reason why it often takes 3-7 days for the JAF to prepare the 'next phase'.

That said, this tactics is not only more sophisticated, but also diametrally opposite to the Assadist and IRGC's tactics. Assadists never manoeuvre, but depend on superior firepower to saturate enemy defences. Sometimes, if necessary, they keep on pushing that firepower (MBTs, for example) forward, until this approaches to near-point-blanc range, just in order to obliterate the target before launching infantry to occupy the position. The infantry is usually moving only once nobody is shooting back - and then in usual fashion (see 'frontal attack').

The IRGC - which used to have very sophisticated tactics back in 2013 (when it proved capable of running nocturnal infantry assaults in build up areas, which is one of most complex military arts one can master) - is nowadays applying the same tactics, though with slightly more manoeuvre (it is, at least from time to time, seeking to hit enemy flanks), and much more infantry (which is also sent to assault even while insurgents are still shooting back, with unsurprising results).

Superior numbers and firepower of Assadists and the IRGC seem to be the reasons why the JAF selected a built-up area for this offensive: namely, buildings are providing plenty of cover while Assadists are still insistent on not providing infantry screen for their MBTs rushed into street battles.

Urban warfare is presently still favouring the JAF.

The question is if it has the reserves necessary for an unavoidable battle of attrition.

It depends. As described above, majority of their 'early strikes' (first wave in each new 'phase') end quite well. Outcome is different if they fail to detect some fortification on time. Here two examples from the western side of District 3000 today.

Both attacks were launched from west towards east, aiming to breach the first IRGC line of defence along the by-pass highway.

As can be seen, FASH commandos easily sliced through the first line, and went as deep as at least two, more likely three rows of houses. Map with approximate result of this attack is attached below.

(Apparently, this attack was so successful, that the Assadist helicopters then dropped three loads of chlorine gas on this area, during the afternoon. Nevertheless, FASH meanwhile managed to reinforce this position and is reporting that they are about 'to spend the first night inside District 3000.)

For unknown reason, things went wrong and involved BMP-1s were hit while crossing obstacles at the highway - i.e. before they were able to deploy commandos on the foothold of the enemy 1st line of defence. One BMP-1 was clearly knocked out (turret blown away), one at least damaged, and one at least abandoned. Iran acknowledged officially for the first time that the Lebanese Hezbollah incurred a lot of deaths during the ongoing fighting of Syria, reporting that the Hizbollah militia’s loss is more than the Iranian’s.

Beirut- Ahead of what it described as the battle of the bones in Aleppo, sources close to Iran’s Shi’ite Fatimiyoun militias said yesterday that passengers and cargo aircrafts had transported to the Damascus airport on Friday a large number of forces from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and several other militias linked to both Iran and Iraq.

The sources added that as soon as they landed at Damascus International Airport, those fighters moved to positions in northern and southern Aleppo.
Channels broadcasting news related to Fatimiyoun on the Telegram network had aired the details of a “Revolutionary Guards” plan to start a wide battle in the coming few days from the axis of northern and southern Aleppo.

Both the Syrian opposition and regime forces agree that the countdown for the last phase of the Aleppo battle has started when a truce announced by Russia last Friday has ended similar to previous ceasefires, without producing any result. Last week, Syrian opposition forces objected a one-side military truce that the Russian Army had announced in Aleppo for 10 hours starting Friday morning and none of the area’s residents or fighters had evacuated the city, as was asked by Russian and Syrian officials.

Director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdelrahman said it was probable that actual battles would start in the next few hours or days, adding that this third phase would be the last and decisive battle of Aleppo for both the regime and the opposition.

The military spokesperson of Fastaqim Kama Omirt Batallions, Ammar Sakkar told Asharq Al-Awsat that the third phase of the Aleppo battle will be launched soon, adding that he was confident it would be the battle of the bones.

On Saturday, Ismail Qaiana, Deputy Commander of Major General Qassem Suleimani, said that the year 2016 would be a resolute year in the Syrian civil war, as he was quoted by the pro-government Mehr news agency.
Qaiana said the fight in Syria would continue. The deputy commander’s positions came at a time when Iranians escalate their demands requesting the withdrawal of the Revolutionary Guards from Syrian territories.

After some (perhaps wilful) confusion over the timing, the operation to expel the Islamic State (IS) from Raqqa City, its Syrian capital, got underway this morning, running concurrent with the effort to evict IS from its Iraqi capital, Mosul. There are deep concerns about the methods adopted in both cases. The ground forces the U.S.-led Coalition has chosen to support in Raqqa cannot lead to sustainable stability in Syria, something that is essential to defeat IS. While the Mosul operation has proceeded generally to plan, there are increasing signs of trouble within the operation itself and the most troubling aspect—the aftermath—still appears to be unplanned. Beyond this is the continued assault on Aleppo City by Bashar al-Assad’s regime and its Russian and Iranian patrons that is systematically destroying the forces needed if there is to be any settlement to Syria’s war that ends the space given to international terrorists.

Mosul

Nearly exactly three weeks ago, the operation to restore the Iraqi government’s control over Mosul was launched, led on the ground by Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga, with a role for the Iranian-run Shi’a militias, backed by air support from the U.S.-led Coalition. The offensive has proceeded roughly to plan but, as pointed out in this space a week ago, there have been problems. A lot of the early optimism and expectations have given way as the death toll has mounted, and this was only the beginning, a foretaste of the change of strategy as IS relinquishes overt control of its statelet and reverts to insurgency. Yesterday, IS added, to the major diversions in Kirkuk and Rutba, an attack in Shirqat, a key gateway to Mosul that was ostensibly manumitted from the hold of the takfiris in September, but which has remained a victim of harrying attacks ever since.

When faced with an overwhelming foe, IS often begins with a show of resistance, then draws the bulk of its forces out of cities quickly, leaving a skeleton crew of snipers, inghimasiyeen, and suiciders, behind layers of barriers, made up of everything from trenches and barbed wire to t-walls and embankments, and scattered with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In this way, IS exercises strict force-preservation and inflicts so much harm on its foes over such a long period for such minimal gains that victories seem pyrrhic. This is why it was possible to predict that the attack against IS in Sirte, Libya, would not succeed as quickly as was believed six months ago.

In Mosul, however, IS’s operating method had seemed different. Anti-IS commanders on the ground spoke of a level of IS resistance heretofore unknown. IS claims to have carried out 120 suicide bombings in October, two-thirds of them around Mosul, which tallies with independent estimates. And there were reports of hundreds of IS jihadists moving into Mosul since this operation began. Now the caliph has confirmed it.

IS’s leader, Ibrahim al-Badri (Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi), released an audio message on Wednesday, the first since 26 December 2015. Eulogies were given for Taha Falaha (Abu Muhammad al-Adnani) and Wael al-Fayad (Abu Muhammad al-Furqan), two extremely senior IS figures killed two months ago, with assurances that their loss had only made the caliphate stronger. Saudi Arabia was, as usual, threatened, and internal terrorism incited. Ditto for Turkey. The foreign “provinces” were exhorted to continue on god’s path and Libya was singled out for praise—and as a destination, should jihadi-salafist volunteers to IS have difficulty getting to Syria and Iraq. Above all though, al-Badri’s message was simple: his troops were to stand firm in Mosul and fight to the last.

Estimates for IS jihadists in Mosul City run from 3,000 to 10,000 and the fight for the city itself has barely begun. Perhaps IS will expend all of these men, and it will certainly increase the diversionary raids to increase the cost even further for its enemies. Or perhaps at some point a retreat will be ordered. If IS manages to prolong the battle enough to wear down the professional Iraqi forces and draw the Shi’a militias into the city, for example, it might pocket the political victory and preserve its forces into the bargain. In either case, it will be IS’s decision and then comes the next phase of trying to uproot IS’s entrenched networks—or, as happened after the surge, not. There is still no agreed plan for the aftermath of IS’s rule in Mosul. If Western attention wanes after IS’s overt control is removed and its underground infrastructure is allowed to endure, in combination with the persistence—indeed worsening—of the political conditions that allowed IS’s rise in the first place, revival might be shorter than last time.

Raqqa

The Raqqa operation is currently in the shaping and isolation phase, with the anti-IS forces currently twenty-five miles away at their closest, in Ayn Issa, so the assault on Raqqa City itself is still a while away. But it is clear what the ground component of the Raqqa operation will be: the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who claim to be devoting 30,000 troops to clearing IS’s spiritual headquarters.

Brett McGurk, the U.S. representative to the global anti-IS Coalition, recently explained: “The fundamental premise of this campaign against ISIL … is [for] locally-based forces to hold ground after ISIL is gone.” This is essential to long-term stability, and is the reason the Iranian-controlled sectarian Shi’a militias that dominate al-Hashd al-Shabi have been kept out of Mosul City and diverted to Tal Afar. On paper, the U.S. is replicating this strategy in Syria by attaching local Arab units who will be a “hold” force to the SDF, but the progress on this front is distinctly incomplete, and the nature of the SDF makes it questionable that this will improve.

The SDF is functionally controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which is the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state using tactics that have led to its designation as a terrorist entity by the U.S., E.U., and Turkey. The SDF already has Arab detachments, theoretically numerically significant, but the constant complaint is that these forces are kept deliberately weak and dependent on the PKK. Additionally, Ankara has begun training Arab rebels for the Raqqa operation, and there is some hope these will be meaningful by the time the operation for the Raqqa City itself begins. There is every reason to doubt this, though. The SDF’s formal platform might be democratic and liberal, but the PKK remains deeply authoritarian, exclusivist, and anti-Turkish, making it unlikely it will allow the SDF banner to become genuinely pluralist, least of all with forces aligned with Turkey.

Turkey’s Operation EUPHRATES SHIELD (OES), involving its own troops and the Free Syrian Army (FSA)-branded rebels, pushed south with a stated goal to (ultimately) move on Raqqa City. Meanwhile, the PKK stated that it, too, was heading to Raqqa. In this race, Turkey was hampered by having to go through al-Bab, the last major urban stronghold IS has in eastern Aleppo Province, where the deeper roots of IS and some of the limitations of the OES rebels made (and make) it likely that there will be a costly and protracted fight. Still, the Turks were able to offer forces recognized as legitimate by the local population, while the PKK, which said Turkey could not be involved in an operation it was part of, is vehemently rejected by even the most sternly anti-IS actors in Arab-majority areas of eastern Syria. The U.S. sided with the PKK—again.

The U.S. has clearly decided the Raqqa operation has to begin now, when it is true that only the PKK are positioned to act. One explanation for this is the reports of urgent threats to the West originating in the caliphal capital. It might even be true, as it surely has been for more than two years. Given that it is going to be months before U.S.-backed forces even reach Raqqa City limits, however, it is tempting to see this as an administration “try[ing] to shape their legacy,” as Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, put it. IS will almost certainly be militarily defeated in Raqqa City, but IS will obtain a political victory from this setback, which in the model of revolutionary warfare it is waging is far more important.

There are tens of thousands of U.S.-vetted, CIA-supported Syrian rebels in Syria, but they have never been supplied with support to make a qualitative difference on the battlefield. The Russian intervention picked up where the Assad regime left off by systematically trying to eliminate these workable rebels, so that the only forces left against Assad are al-Qaeda and IS. Moscow has been preparing for a final assault on the rebellion in Aleppo City, and on Friday its deadline for the population and rebels to quit the city ran out. Not a single person left, fearing arrest if they did so, knowing that ending up in Assad’s prisons death is the very least of the torments, and now Aleppo awaits a renewal of the unmerciful assault the pro-regime coalition has subjected it to on-and-off all year.

An eerie feel is emerging from Iraq about how the government forces perceive the continuing battle to retake Mosul, which enters its fourth week today. More than two years after the American-led campaign against ISIL began, one expects that the ground forces battling the group now have a realistic grip of its capabilities. But that does not seem to be the case in the battle of Mosul. And there is a lesson to be learnt as the United States opens a new front in Raqqa.

Reports from the ground suggest that Iraqi forces feel they are facing a different ISIL and that Mosul is a much harder battle than they initially anticipated. "My views about Mosul have changed after what I saw in Kirkuk," Karwan Taha, a Kurdish fighter, told The Guardian after ISIL stormed Kirkuk a week into the anti-ISIL offensive in Nineveh.

The sentiment of fighters such as Mr Taha intensified even more over the past few days. A result of three poor assessments that came crashing down last week.

The first one was that Iraqi and American forces were uncertain about ISIL’s calculations for Mosul. With few exceptions, the militants typically withdrew from a losing battle even if they would initially resist before they wire the city with improvised explosive devices and flee. The IEDs would prove to be a massive challenge for the government forces sometimes months after the group withdrew. The costly pattern made their withdrawal from Mosul a possibility. The United States allowed them safe passage through the vast desert area west of Mosul, and officials even made public statements that fleeing was an option.

Second, the pattern of withdrawal also inflated the Iraqi forces’ confidence that the battle in Mosul, while it will certainly be more challenging given the large population and territory, would at least follow the same template. Statements along the lines that the battle would be over within days or weeks and that ISIL was done in Iraq were common.

Finally, disinformation about the internal situation within ISIL and Mosul portrayed ISIL as crumbling even before the government forces began the campaign. Officials cited – as yet unverified – incidents of internal or popular rebellions against ISIL and that ISIL leaders and fighters already fled the city. Such reports are understandable – as part of the psychological warfare to confuse the group amid difficulties for the militants to communicate inside and outside the city.

But the group’s intention to defend the city to the last man should not have been doubted. Disinformation about internal fracture speaks of poor understanding of a group that been preparing for the fight in Mosul since the first air strike in August 2014.

The assessments have been damaging to the Iraqi forces instead. It is now clear that the almost certain victory will come against the backdrop of significantly more destruction and human casualty. The federal police has already sustained heavy losses in Kirkuk and areas south of Mosul, and protracted fighting might burn out the elite forces that currently serve as the backbone of the operation.

The speech by Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi on Thursday left no room for doubts about what the group will do. In his first statement since December, Al Baghdadi ordered his followers to stand and fight – the first time an ISIL leader commanded followers not to flee. The order to fight until the end also indicates the group has chosen Mosul to be a long and ugly war, otherwise Al Baghdadi would not risk making such a rare order publicly.

'200 Egyptian soldiers' is nonsense. But, there might be a group of 20 Egyptian Army officers deployed to Syria as 'monitors' - supposedly to 'learn how to fight Daesh' or something of that kind (though, if they were sent to Syria for that purpose, they'll learn nothing at all).

A major IRGC-led offensive is underway in south-western Aleppo.

For the last 72 hours, the VKS and the SyAAF run an almost uninterrupted campaign of air strikes against positions of the JAF coalition in the triangle al-Assad District - District 1970 - Rashiden (SW suburb of Aleppo).

Since yesterday, the IRGC is launching infantry assaults on the District 1070 too. The three waves launched yesterday were all stopped by jihadists of the TIP, but, this morning, Assad-fans are reporting that District 1070 (https://twitter.com/MIG29_/status/795897886848516096?s=09), Tel Muftah (https://twitter.com/A7_Mirza/status/795900740288081921) and Tel Rakim (https://twitter.com/MIG29_/status/795886830373761024) would be under the control of the 'SAA'.

Now, Tel Muftah and Tel Rakim are two features dominating the southern side of District 1970. Their possession means that the IRGC and Hezbollah can exercise fire-control over supply lines for TIP's jihadists inside District 1970, i.e. that the JAF's hold on the latter is now untenable.

All of which means: while - and contrary to reports from Assad-fans - it's unlikely that the IRGC/Hezbollah outright captured the District 1970, they have indirectly cut off the JAF's line of supply into that area.

What this actually means is that the JAF's offensive to lift the siege of Eastern Aleppo is over. Right now, the coalition will be foremost busy trying to repel this counteroffensive - which is not going to be easy. Namely, the terrain between Tel Muftah, Tel Rakim and Rashideen is open and favorising superiority of the IRGC/Hezbollah in fire-power.

In that sense, it's very interesting to follow reports by Sentry Syria (https://www.facebook.com/Sentry.Syria/) today. Sentry Syria is a civilian organization specialized in tracking and reporting take-offs of Assadist and Russians aircraft over Syria, as well as their movements, in order to be able to issue air raid warnings to civilians in insurgent-held areas - via FB, Twitter, Telegram and similar social-media platforms.

If my counting of what they reported this morning alone is correct, the number of sorties traced by them between 08.50 and 13.45 local time was as follows:

SyAAF:
- MiG-21: 1
- MiG-23: 2
- Su-22: 17
- Su-24: 13

VKS (including UAVs):
- 24.

This is of particular interest, then lately (say: until mid-October), the SyAAF was barely capable of launching 40 combat sorties a day. But now, they are launching more than 30 during the morning alone.

Especially the high number of combat sorties of Su-24s is interesting: these are more complex aircraft than Su-22s, and there should be less of them than either MiG-21s, MiG-23s or Su-22s. But, they're still flying more frequently.

Combined with confirmed deliveries of OFZAB-500 incendiary bombs to the SyAAF (and their deployment of these in combat), this means that Assadists have received some sort of major reinforcements for their air force.

Assadists like the Tiger Force, Liwa Suqour as-Sahra etc. are deployed further north, in the Assad Military Academy - in central western Aleppo. This attack today came from the Artillery College in southern Aleppo, and that is held by the IRGC/Hezbollah.

Furthermore, the IRGC/Hebzollah do not cooperate with the VKS in regards of the CAS: but, they do co-work with the SyAAF for this purpose.

Finally, there are strong indications that the SyAAF launched an 'all-out' effort today, flying up to 54 combat sorties over Idlib/Aleppo governorates alone (and mind: the day is still not over). 22 of these by Su-24MK/M2s from the No. 819 Squadron, which should have about 22 operational aircraft.

Sure, the Russians flew about 40 sorties too, but it seems these targeted Idlib (https://twitter.com/Paradoxy13/status/795888426864279552) (city) and similar places, further behind the frontlines.

EDIT: as can be seen from the map below, the JAF coalition lost all the gains from its offensives in August and October/November. Until something changes dramatically, Eastern Aleppo is now 'definitely' under siege.

Russians have re-deployed their S-300 SAM-site from Hmemmem AB to as-Safira, about 50km south-east of Aleppo.

As-Safira is a sort of ‘military town’ - one of centres of Syrian military industry. During the summer of this year, regime forces have constructed a sizeable heliport there. This is frequently used by SyAAF Mi-25 and other helicopters; sometimes by Russian helicopters too.

Obviously, that is a ‘major development’, then it not only ‘breaches’ the terrain-caused isolation of Russian air defence positions low at the Med coast; it also ‘signals’ their intention to – ‘if necessary’ - counter Turkish and CENTCOM operations over northern Syria (i.e. northern Aleppo Governorate).

Here a very interesting article (in Arabic) examining the latest JAF offensive on Western Aleppo. (http://eldorar.com/node/105421)

The author, Eldorar Ash-Shamia, apparently talked with several sources within the JAF (Jabhat al-Fateh) and FH (Fatah Halab) coalitions, and reports as follows:

1.) The regime and pro-regime militias figured out rebel tactics. A Lt-Col. (probably ex-SAA) in the FH HQ says that the pro-regime militias has figured out the rebel tactics from previous battles and were able to better prepare for them. I.e. they knew insurgents would use SVBIEDs to shock the first defensive lines, then follow up with artillery and rocket attacks, and then with infantry. The 'regime' thus emptied their first defence lines, determined where insurgents would attack from, and directed the air strikes (and artillery) there. These have hit the insurgents and enabled regime militias to recover any territory they have lost.

The source added that insurgents did not prepare a backup force able to continue the attacks after having controlled the first locations. 'But', once the main attacking force was stopped, regime militias were able to counter-attack, with 'disastrous' effects upon insurgents - who are always better attacking than defending.

2.) Abu Naza'ar - one of JAF commanders - pointed out 'Russian Air Strikes' (see my commentary below) as playing a 'decisive role' in stopping the JAF attack on District 3000, and that this was the turning moment of the battle.

He said that the density of the air strikes was the main reason for this, and that cloudy weather the first two days had helped insurgents advance.

In total, the FH counted about 400 'Russian' air strikes on al-Assad and Manyan Districts.

3.) Mid through the offensive, infighting erupted between HNAZ (Harakat Noureddin az-Zenghi, i.e. their Abu Amarah Brigade), and the FKU (Fastaqm Union) - which, according to somebody from the FH who asked not to be named - prevented a break-out attempt by insurgents from Sallahaddin District on Ard as-Sabbagh. When HNAZ attacked the FKU, this attack was cancelled.

Conclusion
Shamia says the offensive was still no 'total failure', because it caused up to 370 KIA and 500 WIA to the regime (even more so: to the IRGC and Hezbollah). But, it didn't meet any of its military objectives. Breaking the siege will now require a new round of fighting, which will certainly take into account the lessons from this round.

My observations/commentary:

1.) It's good to see there is a serious analysis of reasons for failure: this is something still 'not entirely common' for too many of Arab militaries.

2.) It seems Shamia's sources do not know about the photo here (https://twitter.com/MmaGreen/status/790912726906179585), clearly showing that regime's intelligence had precise details on the counteroffensive already days before it began.

3.) One thing that's less 'positive' is the tendance to blame 'Russian air strikes' for most of failures. By all respect, but after all the years of this war, insurgents should know better about who is bombing them and what are SyAAF and what are VKS aircraft looking like.

Namely, there is no clear evidence for 'Russian air strikes' targeting Western Aleppo (and District 3000 in particular) during this offensive. Between 28 October and 7 November, Russian aircraft were positively identified on a number of videos showing them operating over other parts of Syria - foremost Idlib.

But, there is plenty of evidence for SyAAF aircraft bombing western Aleppo during this period of time.

Furthermore, until the 'regime' counterattack, there was no evidence of presence of Russian troops - and thus none of the presence of VKS FACs - in Aleppo. Without these, the VKS simply does not know what to bomb on the frontlines.

Pay attention at troops around them: all wearing Russian camouflage uniforms (and one in a Soviet smock), Russian helmets, proper load-bearing vests, two AK-74Ms; none wants photos of them to be taken, and their BRDMs seem to have such modifications like pintle mounted optics, laser range-finders and/or laser warning sensors.

AMMAN: Turkish-backed Syrian rebels are battling Islamic State fighters and meeting “fierce resistance” two kilometers from the self-proclaimed caliphate’s last major stronghold in Aleppo province on Monday, the second day of a renewed push to capture al-Bab with the support of Ankara’s artillery and warplanes.

“The battle has begun in earnest,” Mahmoud Abu Hamzah, the commander of Liwa Ahfad Salaheddin, a Kurdish Free Syrian Army (FSA) brigade participating in the campaign told Syria Direct on Monday.

Al-Bab, located 30km south of Turkey’s southern border with Syria, is the Islamic State’s last major holding in northeast Aleppo province.

The well-fortified city is the latest objective of Turkish-backed rebels currently fighting within Operation Euphrates Shield, a campaign launched by Turkey in late August to battle not only the Islamic State but also US-backed Kurdish forces, in northern Syria.

Over the past 12 weeks, Syrian rebels and their Turkish backers have reportedly cleared IS from “almost 1,600 square kilometers” of land, Ankara’s Anadolu Agency reported on Monday.

“We have entered the outskirts of al-Bab city,” said Abu Hamzah, after a “very swift advance” with the “heavy” support of Turkish artillery, armored vehicles and warplanes.

Fighting is currently concentrated at a livestock market north of al-Bab. The commander said that more than two dozen Islamic State (IS) fighters were killed there in the battles.

“We are meeting fierce resistance,” he added. Islamic State fighters “are battling with everything they have.”

At least nine FSA fighters have been killed and 52 others injured in recent days, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported on Monday, citing a statement by the Turkish Armed Forces. Four Turkish soldiers have also been wounded.

Syrian rebels began the fresh attack to capture al-Bab early Sunday morning. Pushing southward from their territory in northeastern Aleppo province, FSA fighters have now advanced roughly nine kilometers towards al-Bab, leaving them 2km from the city. In the process, they captured seven villages and towns, according to the official Euphrates Shield account on Twitter.

FSA fighters and their Turkish backers are not the only ones with eyes on al-Bab. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—which Turkey accuses of links to the PKK—declared their intent to capture the city earlier this year.

Following advances by Kurdish-led forces towards al-Bab from territory they hold west of the city in recent weeks, “Turkish Armed Forces and the Free Syrian Army accelerated operations,” Anadolu reported on Sunday. After the latest FSA advance, it appears virtually impossible for the SDF to move in from the west and take the city.

Now, FSA fighters are in position not only to storm al-Bab, Abu Hamzah told Syria Direct, but also to capture Qabaseen, a Kurdish-majority town roughly seven kilometers to the northeast.

In the latest advance over the weekend, rebels recaptured Jabal a-Deir, an elevated area that overlooks both Qabaseen and al-Bab, said Abu Hamzah. The elevated position allowed rebels to “fire cut the supply route between the two towns,” he added.

“It’s game over,” added the commander. “With the fall of al-Bab and Qabaseen, the two largest remaining cities IS holds in Aleppo, their presence will be virtually over.”

There were conflicting reports on Sunday regarding the United States-led international coalition’s role in the latest fighting in northeast Aleppo province.

FSA commander Abu Hamzah told Syria Direct that rebels “provided coordinates of IS positions to the coalition,” which he says were then struck. IS-affiliated media agency Amaq reported on Sunday that “three American air raids targeted the outskirts of al-Bab.”

The coalition did not report airstrikes in Aleppo on Sunday. Turkey’s Anadolu Agency on Monday reported that “no aircraft from the international anti-Daesh [IS] coalition were involved” in the latest fighting.

Turkish airstrikes reportedly struck “15 Daesh terrorist targets,” the Anadolu Agency reported on Monday, referring to the Islamic State’s Arabic acronym.

Aerial and ground bombardment of al-Bab by Turkish and FSA forces continued on Monday. A video published by IS media outlet Amaq the day before, purportedly of the aftermath of Turkish shelling, includes a clip of injured adults and a child in a hospital.

Last week, a member of the Kurdish militia that is the primary instrument the U.S.-led Coalition is using in Syria to defeat the Islamic State (IS) was killed. Examining his biography underlined that this militia is the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a Marxist-separatist group that is registered as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, and Turkey. The Western powers continue to obfuscate, if not outright deny, this fact, but Coalition support for the PKK—questionable morally and legally in and of itself—is producing negative results on the ground that help IS over the long-term.

The YPG’s Foreign Fighters

Late on 9 November, the commander of a specialist unit within the People’s Protection Forces (YPG), the Kurdish militia that controls large areas of north-eastern Syria, Haji Kurkhan (Ali Botan), was killed in Qamishli. The circumstances of Kurkhan’s death are somewhat vague, but it is clear he was a Turkish citizen from Van, which is to say a member of the PKK.

It is known that the YPG attracts foreign fighters, including from the West. Many of the Westerners who have joined the YPG are ex-military. Some Western volunteers are Christians, who feel a religious duty to confront IS—though there have been tensions because of the YPG’s repressive practices, and a number of Christian foreign fighters have left YPG and joined Dwekh Nawsha in Iraq. There are then radical Leftists, from communists to anarchists, who are ideologically drawn to the YPG. And finally, there are the usual assortment of adventurers, chancers, and even criminals on the lam.

The main motives for foreign fighters joining the YPG seems to have changed over time, Abdulla Hawez, an Iraqi Kurdish journalist currently studying a Master’s in the department of Middle Eastern Studies at King’s College London, told me. “I think the motivation for foreign fighters during the battle of Kobani [in late 2014] was mostly that a secular militia with female fighters looked very attractive for some, especially the fact these are people fighting a group like ISIS,” Hawez said. “But I believe this has changed; now most of the foreign fighters who join YPG are Left-leaning—some dream to see, and make, Rojava this … Leftist utopia.” The “number of [Western] foreign fighters within the YPG isn’t that large,” says Hawez, and, as reported elsewhere, they are “not doing much on the frontline unless they push to take part in it”. But they are “a very important propaganda tool to attract Western support for their cause.”

It might be argued that this contingent of foreign fighters doesn’t get enough consideration and attention, but it does at least make it into the papers. What is less usually emphasized in stories about the YPG is that it is actually a foreign construct, a subsidiary of the PKK.

A PKK ‘Shell Game’

It is important to note that the U.S. government rejects the fact that the YPG is a branch of the PKK. In May, the State Department asserted that “the YPG is not connected to the PKK“. In October, State added that it draws “a clear line between the PKK’s operations and activities and the regional Kurdish forces [i.e., the YPG]”. Just a week ago, Washington said: “We do not associate the YPG [with the PKK].” This is an indefensible position. As an analyst of Kurdish politics, who is actually embedded with the YPG, stated: “PYD is just the Syrian branch of the PKK in Syria … Their ideology is completely the same, and almost all YPG fighters have a PKK background. … [T]heir commanders all have experience in fighting Turkey.”

The PYD refers to the political party, the Democratic Union Party, which controls the YPG. The PYD was founded as the PKK’s Syrian branch in 2003, beholden to the PKK’s political organization, the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK). The KCK also contains a branch from Iran, known as the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), and a branch from Iraq, the Kurdistan Democratic Solution Party (PCDK). The purpose of the KCK and the PKK “affiliates”—with their multiple acronyms—was to avoid the legal complications and politically toxic branding of the PKK name, internationally (in relation to the post-2001 War on Terror era) and locally (because of the PKK’s close relations with the governments of Syria and Iran, which repress ordinary Kurds).

The PKK was founded as an asset of the Syrian regime, and the Soviet Union, a weapon against Turkey, in the late 1970s. Under threat from Ankara, Damascus evicted the PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, and much of the group’s military infrastructure in 1998, and scaled down its assistance afterward. At the outset of the uprising against Bashar al-Assad in 2011, this alliance seemed to be rejuvenated, with the PYD acting as a de facto extension of the regime in the early months, most notoriously with the murder of anti-regime Kurdish activist Mishal Tammo. In July 2012, an agreement was reached for the PYD and a coalition of Kurdish opposition parties, the Kurdish National Council (KNC), to jointly administer the Kurdish-majority areas of Syria.

Just days later, the regime pulled out of parts of northern Syria in what looked a lot like a handover to the PYD. The PKK had resumed activity, mostly political, inside Syria under the PYD banner, with various periods of official toleration and crackdown; in 2011 and early 2012, the PKK moved considerable troops back into Syria as well. The PYD used this pre-established position to hijack local administration, preventing Syrian Kurdish troops trained in Iraqi Kurdistan entering “Rojava” to join the YPG and dilute the PYD’s power—a policy that continues. The PYD now governs these zones almost exclusively with an authoritarian system that relies considerably on the remaining architecture of the Assad regime. The regime retained outposts in PYD-held territory, though recently the PYD has asserted itself even against the regime in some cases.

The clearest part of the overwhelming evidence that the PYD/YPG is a branch of the PKK is the cross-over in personnel, particularly at the leadership level. Kurkhan is the most recent example. Polat Can, the PYD/YPG representative to the anti-IS Coalition, is a famous example. Less famous is Khabat Derik, another PKK veteran who founded the PYD/YPG. The pattern is much more general, however, as indicated above: a considerable portion of the PYD/YPG’s core manpower is simply the PKK under a different flag. In many cases this means Turkish citizens but quite often it doesn’t, for two main reasons. First, a significant number of the 1990s-era PKK was Syrian—estimates vary between about a fifth and a third—because Ocalan was based in Syria and had free rein to recruit for so many years. Second, when the PKK set up both the PJAK and PYD, it used natives as the advanced guard.

An exhaustive May 2015 study by Jared Ferris and Andrew Self, “Dead Men Tell No Lies,” compiled data on thousands of PKK casualties over fifteen years, and concluded: “Far from just being a PKK offshoot or affiliate, PJAK and the PYD are part and parcel of the organization.” This “does not mean to suggest that the PKAJ, PYD, and PKK are one monolithic top-to-bottom organization,” the authors note, adding:


[T]he relationship between the PKK and its affiliates is one of strategic and operational unity with some level of tactical autonomy. … The PKK’s relationship with its affiliates is not only one of a sponsor giving birth to regional sister organizations, but also one of an inseparable strategic leadership body exercising direct command and control over only nominally distinguishable units. Rather than separate conflicts, the Syrian and Iranian conflicts represent military fronts in a unified regional campaign … Like a shell game, the PKK leadership in Qandil shifts personnel between its affiliates and fronts, attempting to obscure the true nature of the organization and circumvent international terrorist labels. In this sense, the PKK truly has no affiliates, rather three fronts and three names consisting of the same personalities, leadership, ideology, and history of terrorism.

Similar findings are arrived at by everybody who works with the data. A dataset from The Atlantic Council showed that of more than 700 reported YPG casualties between January 2013 and January 2016, half were Turkish citizens. In August 2016, Zaman al-Wasl acquired the names of 530 foreign fighters who had been killed in the ranks of the YPG and its all-female wing, the YPJ. There were fighters from Europe, but more than two-thirds were from Turkey or the PKK leadership’s Iraqi base in the Qandil Mountains.

Accepting that the West is supporting the PKK in the fight against IS has important implications.

The double-standard of supporting terrorist groups who commit crimes against Sunnis to fight Sunni terrorist groups has played into IS’s hands, providing it legitimacy, which is far more important to it long-term than any short-term military setbacks. There is no “counter-narrative” fix when Western policy is the narrative.

Just from monitoring reporting by Sentry Syria (https://www.facebook.com/Sentry.Syria/), yesterday was one of worst days of aerial bombardments in Syria since longer, with Assadist and Russian aerial activity reaching levels from back in January and February this year.

It began around 00.15hrs, with reports about take-offs of four VKS aircraft from Hmemmem AB. The next wave - again by the VKS - was launched about 1 hour latter, i.e. around 01.15hrs, and consisted of at least 7 take-offs from Hmemmem AB.

The third wave began another hour later: it commenced around 02.30, and consisted of at least 3 take-offs. The fourth and fifth wave were much smaller: they followed around 03.30 and 04.30hrs, and included a total of 3-4 take-offs.

Around 06.30hrs, the VKS launched its next major wave of air strikes, consisting of four aircraft that all went in direction of Idlib.

Between 07.30 and 09.00hrs, the VKS launched 6 further air strikes - this time in direction of Western Aleppo. Around 09.00hrs, two possible aircraft of the V-MF (they were not positivielly identified, but area of reporting is indicating they might have come from Kuznetsov) were observed underway over Jishr ash-Shughour.

Means: between the midnight and 09.00hrs, the VKS launched a total of 26 air strikes, the V-MF might have added two - most of these on Idlib and Western Aleppo.

There were no initial reports of deaths in either attack.

The SyAAF started its working day by launching MiG-23s from Hama AB, around 09.00hrs. By 11.00hrs, a total of 5 take-offs by MiG-23s, 8 by Su-22s, 13 by Su-24s and 9 by helicopters were recorded.

The activity was slightly decreased between 11 and 13.00hrs, but the SyAAF still launched at least 7 Su-22s (several of which bombed Sarqib), and 3 Su-24s.

Around 13.00hrs, the SyAAF launched its next major wave, once again starting with a MiG-23 from Hama AB. This seems to have bombed something in Ariha area.

Around the same time, 8 Su-22s took off, one of which bombed the very centre of Ra'astan, while two unknown aircraft - possible V-MF - were reported from Jabal Kurd in NE Lattakia.

Once Trump assumes that presidency in January, how will the Free Syrian Army be impacted?
Hard to predict, actually.

I expect Trump to try working with Russians, but soon realise it's pointless - because these are not the least interested in 'bombing Daesh'. I.e. in this regards he's likely to change his POVs exactly in same fashion like Boris Johnson.

After that, he is more likely to let the Saudis do whatever they like, and then we'll see direct effects of Oblabla's policy. Namely, he's intentionally curbing support for the FSyA already since years, while ignoring ever increasing flood of support provided by Qatar and Turkey for the JFS and other Islamist movements in Syria.

Of particular interest - and importance - will be developments in Dera'a area. Namely, thanks to Oblabla's nonsensical idea of blocking any kind of Southern Front FSyA's ops against Assadists, ever more insurgents are joining the Jabhat Ansar al-Islam ('JAAI', to distinguish it from 'Jaysh al-Islam' in Eastern Ghouta). This is meanwhile one of most powerful single insurgent groups there (here a video showing one of their exercises and graduation ceremonies, back in June this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taGgiat0OkM)

Now, sure: the future of this (southern) frontline in Syria is heavily dependent on Jordanians too. But, considering what the Saudis managed with the JAAI in just the last six months - and this despite Jordanians - is not only 'amazing', but simply 'important'.

So, my impression is rather that of 'several major parties' (at least those 'in the backgrounds') just waiting for Oblabla to finally go.


My impression of the current situation is that Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supplying the weapons to the FSA (including the TOWs), and the CIA's role is to vet those units that are being supplied.My impression is that even the CIA meanwhile has next to no say. It might still be influential in the Amman MOC (i.e. for Southern Front FSyA), and might have some say in regards of what the TSK/FSyA task force in northern Aleppo Governorate is doing against the Daesh. But otherwise, I do not see any kind of 'bright future' for the US influence in Syria.


If Trump terminates the CIA operation, it is reasonable to assume that Doha and Riyadh may increase their support for the rebels and do so in an unconstrained manner, supported by Ankara and Amman.Of course. Indeed, that's perfectly reasonable - and I would expect them to go 'all out' in this regards.
