Russia’s Army Retroffited With New Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile System
The Russian military is slated to rearm all of its missile formations with a new ballistic missile by the end of 2017.

The majority of missile units within the Russian Ground Forces (RGF) have been retrofitted with the short-range nuclear-capable road-mobile 9K720 Iskander-M (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) ballistic missile#system as the obsolete Soviet-era OTR-21 tactical missiles are being phased out, the head of the RGF, Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov, told reporters on February 22, TASS news agency reports.
“Work continues in the ground forces to rearm military units and formations with the modern types of armament and military hardware. The ground forces’ missile formations are switching over in a planned procedure from the Tochka-U tactical missile complex to the Iskander-M system. As of today, over 80#percent of missile formations have received the new missile systems,” Salyukov said.
The general noted that two more missile units will be rearmed with the Iskander-M ballistic missile in 2017. Separately, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on February 22 in the lower house of the Russian Parliament that the RGF will complete the switch to the new ballistic missile system by the end of 2017.
“We’ll complete the rearmament and the switchover to Iskander complexes across the country this year. Some of our [radar] stations are on experimental combat duty today but this year all of them will switch over to the mode of combat alert and we’ll fully cover the entire perimeter, all the country’s radar field for missiles of all types, all trajectories, including ballistic paths,” the defense minister said.
As I reported previously (See: “Russia Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile”), the RGF last test fired an Iskander-M missile in August 2016 during a large-scale military exercise in Russia’s Far East. “The launch was carried out from a training site in the Jewish Autonomous Area. The missile hit a target at a proving ground in the Amur region 300 kilometers away,”#a RGF spokesperson announced at the time.
In February 2017, RGF reportedly fired four Iskander-M ballistic missiles against targets in Syria’s Idlib province, according to U.S. media reports. As I noted last year:
The Iskander-M missile purportedly was inducted into service already in 2006. Rumors emerged in March and April 2016 that the missile had been deployed to Syria. The missile was also#publicly displayed#during this year’s May 9 Victory Day parade.
The two-stage solid propellant missile allegedly has a range of 400-500 kilometers (310 miles) and its [nuclear-capable] single warhead can carry a payload of about 700 kilograms. It has been specifically designed to evade Western missile defenses and reportedly is able to operate in temperatures ranging from -50 to 50 degrees Celsius (-58 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit).
The tactical ballistic missile can be deployed to destroy a host of different targets including missile and multiple launch rocket systems, artillery batteries, as well as command posts and communications centers. It can be armed with variety of different warheads for that purpose. The total number of 9K720 Iskander-M missile systems currently deployed in the RGF is estimated to be over 100. A shorter-range export variant of the 9K720 Iskander-M missile system has been offered to China, India, and South Korea. However, only the domestic version of the missile can be armed with a nuclear warhead.

There's More to the Michael Cohen Story


I was intrigued to learn a few days ago that President Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, once founded an ethanol business in Ukraine. It's referred to as a family business. So presumably he set it up with relatives of his wife, who is Ukrainian. This isn't any big scoop I uncovered with my masterly reporting skills. It's referenced right in one of the biggest stories of the last week in The New York Times, the one about Cohen, Felix Sater and Andrii V. Artemenko, the renegade Ukrainian MP who pitched Cohen (and, he hoped, Mike Flynn and Donald Trump) on his 'peace plan' for Russia and Ukraine and who is now being investigated by the government of Ukraine for treason.
Now, to be clear, there's nothing wrong or suspicious about setting up a business in the energy sector in Ukraine. But it did make me see Cohen's role in all of this in something of a new light. In most of the coverage of Cohen's not infrequent appearances in the Russia/Trump saga, he is presented as a blunt-affect New York City lawyer who seldom makes it east of Queens. That's one of the things that has always made his cameos in these stories a bit odd and hard to figure. But if he's set up a family business in Ukraine, it seems like this terrain and the cast of characters and politics might not be so foreign to him after all.
Then there are some more details.
This article in the English language section of the Urkainian news website Hromadske International has more details. Now, before discussing this I should say that I always try to be cautious dipping into the press of a country I don't know in some detail. It's hard to know the difference between The New York Times and the National Enquirer without your linguistic and cultural-political bearings. However, in this case I spoke to a good friend who is part of the Ukrainian-American community. She is familiar with the publication and the people who run it. So while I cannot specifically confirm the details of this article, I'm confident it is a legitimate publication. The article I'm referencing is an English translation of the original in Ukrainian. The usage is a little rough in places. But it's clear enough.
In any case, the article is a backgrounder on Artemenko, pivoting off the original story in the Times. It goes into various details about Artemenko's background. Then it gets to Cohen. In an interview at Strana.ua, he says that while Sater is a recent acquaintance, he's known Cohen since back when Cohen was setting up the ethanol business in Ukraine. So at least according to to Artemenko, he and Cohen have known each other for some time. This wasn't just a courtesy meeting Cohen took with a stranger as a favor to Sater.
And then there's this.
Artemenko told Strana.ua that this wasn't the first time they'd talked about the "peace plan." He says that he was discussing the peace plan with Cohen and Sater “at the time of the primaries, when no one believed that Trump would even be nominated.”
So at least according to Artemenko, discussions about the "peace plan" go back to the first half of 2016.
That's interesting.
I should note this caution. Artemenko seems like a pretty shady character, based on this article and the other write-ups over recent days. He could certainly be lying about his contacts with Cohen before February 2017 for any number of reasons. This whole story is a swirl of confusion, lies and misinformation. So this isn't just a perfunctory caveat. It's a real possibility. But given the demonstrable lack of credibility of Cohen and the rest of the players on the Trump side, I see no reason to dismiss his claims out of hand. After all, in a period of 48 hours Cohen gave four different versions of his side of the story about this meeting, successively dismissing each of his previous stories as "fake news."
We should ask Artemenko for more details and ask Cohen whether these new details are true.
It has always struck me as highly odd that, in the current climate of suspicion over Russia's ties to Trump, Cohen would take that moment to meet with Sater - a former business associate who Trump now claims he wouldn't recognize - and a Ukrainian with a pro-Russian peace plan. It makes a bit more sense if the relationship goes back before this year.
We shouldn't take any of this at face value. But it seems like there's a lot more here than one meeting.

Azor..actually would like to see a more thorough historical redo of that entire period as it would go a long way in reducing tensions if the past was fully and completely understood...as Russia tends to twist their version of the Soviet past....as do many in that area still do....

I completely agree. I think that Snyder's Bloodlands was a masterpiece in that it looked at the total suffering inflicted by Stalin and Hitler, and utilized many different sources, although I believe that in his determination to counter Soviet and Russian propaganda, he minimized the suffering of ethnic Russians at the hands of the Germans, which was horrendous and worse than that meted out by the Soviets to the Baltics.

UAF is getting selective on what it shows as they understand OSINT......the interview did not state what front area ...assuming it was Avdiivka as that has been the heaviest fighting area .....

Azor....the video depicted a burning and cooking off vehicle...hard to say it was a BMP but due to the explosions of the ammo...it carried a heavy load..distance to the vehicle was about 500-800m again hard to judge due to the darkness....

The video was shot in the early morning or early evening as it was dark but you could see the houses behind it ...as the vehicle burned so the ATGM had to have been fired using night vision which we have seen used in Syria....

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu used the shortened workweek before Red Army Day (February 23—officially rechristened “Defender of the Fatherland Day,” following the collapse of the Soviet Union) to promote Russia’s military successes. Dressed in an army general’s uniform decorated with military ribbons, Shoigu addressed an all-Russia youth forum in Moscow on February 21. The following day, Shoigu, again in military uniform and backed by his top brass army generals, addressed the State Duma. In previous years, Shoigu as well as his predecessors addressed plenary sessions of the Duma behind closed doors; those proceedings were always declared state secrets, and deputies were instructed not to disclose anything to journalists. But this week, Shoigu’s address and question time in front of Russian legislators were open to the press and streamed live on the Internet by the Ministry of Defense.
Speaking before the youth forum, Shoigu asserted that Russia has achieved a resounding military-political victory in Syria by defeating the opposition, which was armed by the United States and its allies. He added that the wave of so-called “colored” pro-democracy revolutions, allegedly sponsored by the West, has been decisively crushed and reversed by heroic Russian soldiers fighting in Syria. Yugoslavia, Georgia, Iraq, Ukraine and Libya have been the victims of Western-sponsored pro-democracy “colored revolution” insurgencies, according to Shoigu. He asserted that while opposition fighters and mercenaries in Syria have been receiving arms and munitions from abroad, Russian weapons and soldiers have stabilized the situation by supporting the legitimate government in Damascus (Militarynews.ru, February 21).
In his speech before the Duma, the defense minister declared the mission in Syria accomplished: The possible overthrow of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been thwarted, and the Syrian civil war was effectively stopped after the “liberation” of Aleppo. The Syrian opposition is being separated from the radicals—something the Western powers, according to Shoigu, could not achieve. Russian naval and air bases in Syria have been secured and will continue to operate indefinitely “to keep the strategic balance in the region and prevent the spread of terrorism.” Russia massively used new weapons systems in Syria; and some 86 percent of all Russian air force pilots, according to Shoigu, carried out combat tours in Syria “to gain experience.” Russian special forces and military police battalions “have demonstrated their high efficiency” in Syria (Mil.ru, February 22).
Replying to questions from Duma members, Shoigu disclosed that, four years ago, Russia secretly created an “information warfare directorate” within the defense ministry—in effect a new branch of the military that will be engaged in cyber warfare “counterpropaganda.” Apparently, this will involve hacking into databases and Internet trolling. Duma deputies seemed surprised when Shoigu publicly disclosed this previously secret information. Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, a former chief of the Airborne Troops (VDV) and the current Duma defense committee chair, told journalists these new troops will “protect [Russia’s] national defense interests and engage in information warfare,” including cyber warfare (Militarynews.ru, February 22). Retired Colonel General Leonid Ivashov, the former head of the defense ministry’s international cooperation department, insists Russia should be more aggressive in information warfare “to open up concealed Western data in the US and in Germany to expose their lies” (Militarynews.ru, February 22). The hacking of e-mail accounts to dump their contents into the public domain could seem to fit the Russian understanding of “information warfare.”
Shoigu also announced that newly formed army divisions are being deployed in the west, south, north and on the Kurile Islands. A two-divisional air defense command is being deployed in the Arctic: one division covering the Barents Sea region and the other—from Novaya Zemlya Archipelago to Alaska (Militarynews.ru, February 20). Shoigu further noted than an additional division is being deployed in the Kuriles. In fact an entire army corps is reportedly being deployed in the Kuriles: a division and several separate brigades, combining army, anti-aircraft and long-range anti-ship missile units. This corps must defend the entire Kurile Island chain, including the presently uninhabited northern islands—not only the southern ones claimed by Japan—against a possible enemy (US and Japan) assault (Mk.ru, February 23). The Kurile corps must deny enemy air and sea assets from penetrating the Sea of Okhotsk—thus turning this body of water into a fortress from which Russian nuclear strategic submarines based in Kamchatka may target the continental United States. The Kurile defenses are part of a larger Pacific defense rim from the Bering Strait to Vladivostok. Last August, Shoigu announced the creation of such a defensive rim, which will also include the deployment of a coastguard division on the Chukotka Peninsula, facing Alaska. Using long-range anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, this division will be tasked with denying the US access to the Arctic through the Bering Strait (Mil.ru, August 23, 2016).
Finally, Shoigu announced to Duma lawmakers, on February 22, that—to enhance Russian patriotism—the Ministry of Defense was building a replica of the Bundestag (German lower chamber of parliament, in Berlin) in the ministry-run “Patriot” team park, close to Moscow. Members of the defense ministry–sponsored youth movement Yunarmya (Youth Army) will be able to storm this replica of the Bundestag to exercise, according to Shoigu. The storming by Russian troops of the Bundestag in 1945 symbolized the defeat of Nazi Germany. The Duma unanimously voted on a resolution to approve Shoigu’s job performance as defense minister (Kommersant, February 22).
Shoigu—unlike most of President Vladimir Putin’s other ministers—has the instincts of a true politician, as demonstrated by this week’s public, self-promotional saber-rattling performances. The immediate objective seems obvious: to secure Putin’s long-term commitment to allocate sufficient funds to continue the military’s massive rearmament program, which is being challenged by the finance ministry wishing to cut defense spending. Some 58 percent of weapons in the immediate battle-ready units of the Armed Forces are today considered modern, and a massive rearmament is underway. In 2017, some 1.4 trillion rubles ($30 billion) have been allocated for arms procurement (Interfax, February 21). But at stake is the overall scope of the rearmament program from 2018 to 2025, which must be approved by next July. Moscow Deploys the Most Dangerous Kind of Disinformation Against Ukraine

Staunton, February 28 – Lies are one thing; disinformation quite another, as the late Nathalie Grant warned decades ago. The first can muddy the waters but are typically quickly exposed by anyone who examines them. They have a far greater and long lasting influence because the lies are wrapped in facts.

Indeed, one could say that the flood of lies is nothing but a means to make disinformation more effective because those who recognize these falsehoods may deceive themselves when it comes to more carefully constructed narratives of disinformation which are accepted because so many parts of them are true.

Consequently, identifying such disinformation and carefully sifting the lies it contains that are surrounded by facts is a far more important but also far more difficult task than simply unmasking lies. The latter may make those who do it feel better; but only the former can protest us against those who deploy disinformation skillfully.

That makes a new article by US-based Russian journalist Kseniya Kirillova especially important. Indeed, in many ways, it is a model of the challenge the world faces in dealing with Russian disinformation and the care that needs to be exercised in exposing and thus countering it (ru.krymr.com/a/28334404.html).

Last week, she notes, the Ukrainian media was filled with stories that Ukrainian defense plants were selling military equipment to Russia.# The reports cited the conclusions of the distinguished Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and even appeared plausible given that Ukrainian plants had supplied Russian ones before 2014.

Such stories have two target audiences: Ukrainians who might conclude that their elites were betraying them and their country out of greed, and Europeans who might conclude that there was no reason to defend Ukraine or maintain sanctions on Russia for its invasion if the Ukrainians weren’t willing to prevent such sales.

But the stories, however plausible and apparently fact-based they appeared to be, were entirely false. Indeed, as experts at the Kyiv Center for Research on the Army, Conversion and Disarmament point out, those behind this disinformation did not report accurately even about what SIPRI did say.

Mikhail Samus, deputy head of the center, notes that “it is important to understand that SIPRI did not publish precisely the information” these stories contained. Instead, the stories were based on its own collective summaries of materials rather than on the actual evidence the Stockholm institute gathered.

For journalists who choose to rely on the summaries rather than on the report itself, the stories placed in the Ukrainian media appear accurate, whereas those who examine the SIPRI study will see that such conclusions are not only inaccurate but designed to hide what SIPRI did highlight in its latest report: Russian arms shipments to its forces in the Donbass and Crimea.

And one Ukrainian journalist, Aleksandr Demchenko, adds that the way in which SIPRI presented the data it has on Ukrainian arms sales further confused the situation. The Swedish center based its findings not on data from the last year but rather for a five-year-period, from 2012 to 2016, which includes a time when Ukrainian firms did supply Russian ones.

Moscow is only too pleased to use such “inaccuracies” to discredit Ukraine in Europe and to hide its own illegal supply of weapons to its own forces and clients in the Donbass and to Russian-occupied Crimea. By pushing the inaccurate story of Ukrainian arms sales at the same time and with the same sources, Moscow at least in part has achieved its goals.

Exposing this kind of thing, as Kirillova has done here, is far more difficult and time-consuming that simply pointing to lies, but it is also far more important. And as she notes, “this isn’t the first such case” since Russia invaded Ukraine; and it certainly won’t be the last either there or elsewhere.

Rohrabacher explained that he had visited the Baltic states after hearing stories of Russian military aggression and found "not one report of actual military aggression." He added that the United States has sent "our tanks up there, having B-52 mock raids on Russia, over Estonia, toward the Soviet capital, in the name of stopping Soviet military aggression that never existed. This has got to stop or we're going to end up in war."
Echoing Trump's practice of equating Russia and the United States—"We have a lot of killers…you think our country is so innocent?" the president said to Bill O'Reilly last month— the 13-term congressman offered his own analysis of the similarities between the United States and Russia. "We have engaged in some of these activities," he said. After Rohrbacher's history lesson, Rep. Gerry Connolly, (D-Va.)* asked Ilves to expand on his answer about Russian aggression.#
"I didn't get to finish," the former president said, referring to the kidnapping of the Estonian official. "That was a military action. Troops came over and kidnapped this guy." He then noted massive military exercises the Russians perform at borders in the region, and not just between Russia and Estonia. "I mean, they do mock bombing raids on Sweden," he said. "So it's not just us."
Connolly then addressed Rohbacher's comparison of Putin with Daley. "I went to school in Chicago during his mayorality," Connolly said. "I didn't know him, but I assure you, Vladimir Putin is no Richard Daley. Richard Daley did not have his political opponents assassinated. He didn't send them into exile. He didn't put them in prison. He didn't silence the press. He didn't assassinate members of the press. He didn't exile members of the press. Russia has developed a system designed to network and control Murmansk-BN long-range jammers capable of disrupting radio communications of US and NATO militaries at a range exceeding 1,864 miles, Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern (KRET) said.
This system is expected to be a part of the national strategic electronic warfare (EW) system, which is currently being developed in Russia. It can be viewed as an asymmetrical response to the Pentagon's doctrine of a network-centric warfare, the adviser of KRET's first deputy general director Vladimir Mikheev said.
The Russian strategic EW system applies a similar approach to defense. "It is meant to disrupt information environment and prevent an adversary from receiving and sending command and goal-oriented information," he explained.
Murmansk-BN
A prototype of the KRET's subsystem has successfully passed state trials. It will enter mass production in the near future, the defense contractor noted. KRET's press service did not provide information on#when the new EW system will enter service with the Russian Armed Forces, telling Sputnik that it will be unveiled later.
The Murmansk-BN complexes, which the new system will control, are aimed at disrupting radio communications at a maximum range of#more than 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles). The jammer is specifically geared at tackling high frequency communications systems, including the High Frequency Global Communications System.
The HFGCS is a worldwide network of transmitters which provides command and control communications between ground agencies and US military aircraft and ships. Washington's military partners in NATO are said to#have access to this network.

There was in fact a major Ukrainian water pipeline damaged by heavy Russian shelling which seems to have specifically targeted it...being repaired as best under artillery fire conditions....

Appears the pre positioning of potentially the next scheduled ABCT to replace the current one in Poland and eastern Europe....being readied for shipping..normal process as the Army moves months in advance for such a major troop/equipment movement.

It is definitely an ABCT based on the equipment and from the 3ID which is a heavy Division based on the East Coast....
