Many in Moscow Now Think Using Nuclear Weapons is ‘Entirely Possible,’ Mlechin Says
http://windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2017/01/many-in-moscow-now-think-using-nuclear.html#

I don't find him particularly compelling. Research into nuclear weapons policy indicates that American and Russian/Soviet nuclear doctrine was and is almost wholly dependent upon their conventional power relative to one another.

Even when Kennedy's administration turned away from Eisenhower's New Look/First Offset/Massive Retaliation doctrine, not much changed operationally until the Nixon era, because it took decades (at least 20 years) for the United States to develop a credible Flexible Response.

Only during the late 1970s did it become apparent that technological advancement could allow US conventional forces to "fight outnumbered and win" against quantitatively superior Warsaw Pact, Chinese and North Korean forces.

Despite Reagan's confrontational rhetoric, he was the first US president not dependent upon nuclear weapons when it came to the Soviets.

Look at the nuclear saber-rattling done by Eisenhower (to end the Korean War), Kennedy (to end the Cuban Missile Crisis), Nixon (to deter Soviet forces from entering the Yom Kippur War and to pressure the Soviet Union and China to stop aiding North Vietnam) and Ford (to signal displeasure to North Korea).

Putin's nuclear saber-rattling coincides completely with: (a) official acceptance of the Russian military's weaknesses, and (b) a sense that the West is expanding and needs to be contained.

Irrespective of one's moral views regarding the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia, the fact is that both saber-rattled when they felt on the defensive and unable to challenge the other.

Removed from the context of the Soviet Union being a genocidal and aggressive power, Eisenhower's deployment of nuclear weapons was not only provocative but bordering on lunacy.

Galeotti noted that no Russian general believes that "nuclear de-escalation" is even feasible. It's all part of Putin's show; his brinkmanship that mimics what US presidents did in the 1950s-1970s. Unfortunately, Mlechin serves as an unwitting mouthpiece to convince the West that Putin is a "madman" and therefore cannot be confronted anywhere lest he set off the bomb.

Azor...here is the core problem with dealing with Putin...his inner circle and yes even the Russian FM Lavrov.....when one preaches nothing but their very own propaganda "kool aid" for the last two years focused on why they are clashing with the West...then at some point one begins to truly believe that "kool aid" meaning you are in fact a superpower fully capable of dictating your will .....you lose totally sight of the true ground reality and mistakes then occur in judging exactly what the West will or will not do...that is the inherent problem with propaganda..trying to keep leaders immune from it so they can make valid and sane assumptions in their decision making process....AND IMHO they are on the verge of actually "believing" that they could in fact get away with a tactical nuclear first strike...at least on the senior leadership circle around Putin....this does not include the military which will always do what the Putin circle dictates....

We are now at that point on the Russia side........and we in the West keep making the same basic mistake when we judge Putin's actions....the West led by the US have totally misread him since Crimea...his invasion of eastern Ukraine and exactly what he wants in Syria.....

An interesting fact behind this comment......

Nixon (to deter Soviet forces from entering the Yom Kippur War

Nixon did nothing but pass information to the Soviets in the form of sat photos...the nuclear threat came directly from the Israeli side...and then vice versa later in Yom Kippur.

As the Egyptian Army was advancing and the Israeli's were retreating and it did not look so hot for the IDF.....the Israeli's parked a few nuclear devices on the runway of a major IDF airfield near Tel Aviv just in time for a US spy satellite pass.....and the US "got the message"....and then passed that to the Soviets....urging them to reign in the EA.........

THEN when the IDF was on the verge of encircling the entire EA and causing a sound defeat the Soviets alerted an elite Soviet Airborne Div and were loading an Soviet elite Airborne Regt (the US picked up via NSA/ASA the alert status) on a well known Soviet airfield in full view of a passing US spy sat....that info was passed to the Israeli's via photos by Nixon and the IDF if you really check the open media pulled up short of a total win and allowed the EA to make it back across the Suez.......

During those years even during US/NATO exercises all Soviet spy sats were fully tracked and their crossing times over the exercise areas were published well in advance of any exercise....and during the crosses...vehicles went under cover and all comms were throttled back...

BTW....on the day of the EA attack across the Suez and for the next four days....at midnight on a specific LW radio frequency there was a constant of messages in English for example...."Nate's mother is asking Nate to call home as she is sick".....for hours.....and then they were repeated one more time...

This was the IDF calling up their strategic reserves scattered around the world to come home and merge with the IDF...and a number of US Army tank officers suddenly left their US units in Germany......took emergency leave and departed Europe to fight in the IDF tank units.

Nixon did nothing but pass information to the Soviets in the form of sat photos...the nuclear threat came directly from the Israeli side...and then vice versa later in Yom Kippur.

I am referring specifically to Nixon’s decision to go to DEFCON 3, which was about deterring the Soviets from intervening. I am aware that Israel threatened to use nuclear weapons against the Egyptians and Syrians in order to obtain US aid.

Of course, we must ask why did Israel’s nuclear saber-rattling work on the United States, but not Syria or Egypt? ;)

I would say that it didn’t work on the Arabs for the following reasons:

Arab aims were actually rather limited (reconquest of Golan and Sinai)
Israel being unable to detonate a weapon on the battlefield without inflicting damage to Israelis and Israel
The expected outcry if Israel destroyed Cairo or Damascus
Soviet guarantees of retaliation (see further down)

As the Egyptian Army was advancing and the Israeli's were retreating and it did not look so hot for the IDF...the Israeli's parked a few nuclear devices on the runway of a major IDF airfield near Tel Aviv just in time for a US spy satellite pass...and the US "got the message"...and then passed that to the Soviets...urging them to reign in the EA...

I understood that Israel was serious about using nuclear weapons given Dayan’s initial shock, and that the satellite reconnaissance only confirmed what Tel Aviv had communicated verbally to Washington.

THEN when the IDF was on the verge of encircling the entire EA and causing a sound defeat the Soviets alerted an elite Soviet Airborne Div and were loading an Soviet elite Airborne Regt (the US picked up via NSA/ASA the alert status) on a well known Soviet airfield in full view of a passing US spy sat...that info was passed to the Israeli's via photos by Nixon and the IDF if you really check the open media pulled up short of a total win and allowed the EA to make it back across the Suez...

Indeed. I also gather that the Soviets had deployed SSBNs to the area, nuclear-armed Scuds to Egypt and had a vessel carrying nuclear weapons docked in Egypt, all to dissuade the Israelis from either pressing their advantage too far and/or using nuclear weapons. The US certainly noticed the ship and the Scuds and would have kept the Israelis in the loop as well…

BTW...on the day of the EA attack across the Suez and for the next four days...at midnight on a specific LW radio frequency there was a constant of messages in English for example..."Nate's mother is asking Nate to call home as she is sick"...for hours...and then they were repeated one more time...

If so, then why did the Russians rely upon one Spetsnaz brigade to secure Crimea in early 2014, out of 25,000 Russian soldiers in Crimea? Why did it take 40,000 Russian soldiers massed on Ukraine's eastern borders only generate 9,000 men in Battalion Tactical Groups in Donbas? Why are Russian soldiers from the Donbas being sent to Syria?

If you have been following the Ukrainian thread since Crimea....the initial Russia invasion of Donbass was well on the other side of 15,000 troops all taken from their professional contract side of the house...some estimates placed the number closer to 17,000.

After the UAF was soundly beaten in an 2014 encirclement most of the invasion troops withdrew to just over the border...leaving a remaining 11,000 inside...that number has sunken to around 5-8,000 depending on what Russia is trying to pressure Ukraine on....

Remember in the initial Russian invasion UAF artillery mainly BM27s caught a Russian mech brigade on the move and Russian loses with wounded were in the range of 200 and ten were captured...virtually wiping out a Tactical BN....

Currently a stable 5,000 is in place...largely separatist unit commanders and XOs and logistics support...coupled with a Spetsnaz Brigade with artillery and armored units .....with elements of recce (UAV/EW) and logistics.....a large number of Russian trainers are "hidden" in the separatist units....

I have been retro posting info that now is being taken from Russian VK accounts and Ukrainian social media analysts are slowly piecing together the actual invasion units....and they talk about brigades not BNs......meaning multiple different BNs forming a common Russian brigade under command of that actual brigade commander...

Right now there is a stand off with spetsnaz...Russian spetsnaz has not launched any attacks in over two full months due to an ambush that caught and killed two full teams and the Russians are unsure just how the UAF found them...

Your last question is easy to answer....they are considered to be combat trained and experienced and if they are Russian usually spetsnaz, artillery and recce (UAV/EW types)....if separatists then with Russian PMU Wagner...

I have been following the thread since Crimea, but I’m going by estimates from Philip Karber of the Potomac Foundation, who has covered Russia’s invasion extensively: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WA1rP5WGfY

I gather that he was referring specifically to regular professional contract soldiers operating in BTGs, rather than the horde of Russian and local mercenaries of varying skills leavened with SF and intelligence operators (e.g. advisors and trainers).

Overall, I would expect that Russian regulars, irregulars and mercenaries combined total some 15,000 to 17,000, or ~38% of the total insurgent fighting strength.

I also agree that the insurgents are incapable of mounting a successful major offensive (e.g. capturing Mariupol or Kharkiv) without direct and obvious Russian intervention, particularly with airpower and artillery support. Yet the insurgents seem more than capable of blunting a Ukrainian offensive until clandestine Russian reinforcements arrive to shore up the front.

NOTE...during the recent quick UAF push to take "grey area" on the Minsk 2 frontline..actually in all Minsk 2 maps this grey area was actually Ukrainian..they were able to grab the area before the Russians and or mercenaries could react and then held it against all subsequent attacks to recapture it....much to the surprise of the Russians....

From West Point's Modern Institute of War: http://mwi.usma.edu/russian-ukrainian-war-understanding-dust-clouds-battlefield/

The battlefields in Eastern Ukraine represent part of a new era of warfare, or so we are regularly told. Analysts, pundits, and military leaders point to cyber warfare, hybrid warfare, and the gray zone. But look away from these shiny new concepts for a moment, and it becomes clear the Russian–Ukrainian war’s conventional character is far from new. In fact, it looks a lot like the last century’s World Wars. While the new aspects of this war have generated discussion within the defense industry as to the evolving character of war, an acknowledgement of the conflict’s conventional character is largely missing from the discourse.

To be sure, Russia’s actions in Ukraine have revealed several innovations, most notably the employment of the semi-autonomous battalion tactical group, and a reconnaissance-strike model that tightly couples drones to strike assets, hastening the speed at which overwhelming firepower is available to support tactical commanders. However, even these innovations are being used within a form of warfare that looks strikingly like that of a century ago.

Siege Warfare in Eastern Ukraine—the Modern Russian Way of War

The July 11, 2014 strike at Zelenopillya is perhaps the most noticeable example to emerge from the war of the combined effects of tactical drones with the battalion tactical group—a task-organized force designed to achieve tactical overmatch against opponents—and its organic fires capabilities. The attack was a preemptive undertaking against Ukrainian brigades, postured in assembly areas, which were preparing to conduct offensive action against Russian and partisan forces. The buzzing of tactical drones and cyber-attacks targeting Ukrainian communications preceded the strike. An onslaught of rockets and artillery fell on the Ukrainian position shortly after the drones arrived, leaving thirty Ukrainian soldiers dead, hundreds more wounded, and over two battalions’ worth of combat vehicles destroyed. This strike created anxiety within the US Army, specifically in relation to the sophistication of Russian cyber capabilities and the effectiveness of the new Russian reconnaissance-strike model. This strike also highlights the disparity in artillery and rocket munitions between Russia and the US Army. Russia still possesses and employs a variety of munitions, to include dual-purpose improved conventional munitions and thermobaric munitions, that the US Army elected to eliminate from its arsenal.

The Battle of Ilovaisk followed on the heels of the strike at Zelenopillya. Ilovaisk, a city on a critical highway linking the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) with Russia, was held by DPR partisans and Russian forces. In early August 2014, Ukrainian forces fed approximately eight battalions into the city, attempting to dislodge Russian and partisan forces from Ilovaisk. Their effort achieved moderate success—enough so that by the end of August, Russia dispatched multiple battalion tactical groups from its Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don to regain control of the situation. These Russian forces encircled the town, isolating the Ukrainian forces at Ilovaisk, and began to lay siege to the city. Many Ukrainian soldiers reported hearing the distinctive buzz of Russian drones prior to the deluge of rocket and artillery fire—an indicator of Russia’s emerging tactic of using drones, linked directly to battalion tactical groups, to facilitate indirect fire. Ukrainian forces attempted to break out of their beleaguered position several times, but were never successful. By the end of the month, the critical situation forced the Ukrainian government to seek a political solution, which led to the Minsk Protocol on September 5, 2014.

The agreement allowed for a peaceful withdrawal of Ukrainian forces along a corridor back to Ukrainian-held territory. However, Russian forces opened fire on the Ukrainian forces as they withdrew. The carnage from the battle and the shooting gallery along the withdrawal corridor killed over 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, wounded hundreds more, and destroyed scores of combat vehicles. The Battle of Ilovaisk was the bloodiest battle of the war for the Ukrainian army. The Minsk Protocol did little to inhibit combat operations, and Russian siege operations continued.

The next major Russian siege was at the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport—or “Little Stalingrad” to its Ukrainian defenders—which occurred from September 2014 to January 2015. During this battle, Russian forces sought to capitalize on Ukrainian initiative by allowing them to invest a considerable amount of force at the airport, before deploying multiple battalion tactical groups to encircle the facility. Once isolated, Russian forces and partisans began a slow, concentric squeeze on the Ukrainians controlling the airport, much of which consisted of incessant artillery and rocket bombardment. As their grip grew tighter, Russian and partisan forces entered and cleared terminals, hangers, and other facilities in which Ukrainian forces were located. The combined Russian–partisan team employed tanks in an infantry-support role throughout the clearance operation, providing covered movement from objective to objective and using mobile, protected firepower to achieve local overmatch against Ukrainian infantry. The battle ended with the airport destroyed and Ukrainian forces having suffered approximately 200 killed in action, another 500 wounded, and double-digit losses in tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery, and other combat vehicles.

The Battle of Debal’tseve was the last major siege of the Russian–Ukrainian War. Like the Battle of Ilovaisk, the two sides fought for strategically important highway links. The city of Debal’tseve, with 25,000 inhabitants, was the furthest east piece of Ukrainian-controlled territory. The city formed a salient into Russian- and partisan-controlled territory, which offered Russia an enticing opportunity to shore up its front lines. On January 14, 2015, Russian and partisan forces attacked, aiming to collapse the shoulders of the salient and cut off the Ukrainians in the city—a pincer movement reminiscent of the Battle of the Bulge. Once isolated, Russian forces launched massive salvos of rocket and artillery fire at Ukrainian forces and on the city’s infrastructure. They also cut power and utilities in the city, creating a humanitarian crisis within Debal’tseve. By the end of January, Russian offensive action, coupled with the harsh Ukrainian winter, led to the death of 6,000 civilians. Another 8,000 fled Debal’tseve. The battle triggered the Minsk II agreement on February 11, but fighting continued until February 20, when the city fell to Russian and partisan forces. All told, the battle saw approximately 8,000 Ukrainian soldiers defeated by over 10,000 Russian and partisan forces. The Ukrainians suffered close to 200 killed in action, over 500 wounded, and hundreds missing or captured.

Minimizing Dust Clouds: Understanding the Purpose of Modern Siege Warfare

What explains Russia’s evident preference for the siege? Would it not make more sense to quickly annihilate the Ukrainians? Perhaps. However, the siege’s benefit is its ability to transfer military power into political progress, while obfuscating the associated costs. A rapid, violent, decisive victory in which hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers are killed in a matter of days is counterproductive to Russia’s political goals, whereas the incremental use of violence over time accomplishes the same objectives with less disturbance to the international community. Imagine a formation of tanks driving through the desert. They can quickly get to an objective by driving full-throttle, but in doing so they kick up a large amount of dust, making the formation and its direction of travel observable to any onlooker. However, a formation of tanks moving slowly through the desert produces a much smaller dust signature, making its presence less noticeable and its intentions less discernible. “Dust clouds” on the battlefield are inevitable, but how they are managed in pursuit of political objectives is the essence of good strategy. This is a key consideration in understanding Russia’s proclivity for the siege.

As the Russian–Ukrainian War illustrates, the battalion tactical group has proven to be a uniquely responsive and effective tool for conducting siege warfare. The formation’s versatility and success led Gen. Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, to announce in September 2016 the Russian army would increase the number of battalion tactical groups from sixty-six to 125 by 2018. Additionally, professional soldiers will staff the formation, whereas conscripts will be assigned to rear-echelon formations—which will likely yield more effective battalion tactical groups. As a result, the US Army can expect to find Russian battalion tactical group continuing to emerge in areas in which Russia employs ground forces to achieve political objectives.

The Russian Threat Beyond Eastern Europe

Looking beyond Eastern Europe, Russia is employing a similar approach to war in Syria, specifically in Aleppo. Russian armed forces, in conjunction with Syrian allies, have encircled the city, cut all ingress and egress routes, and ruthlessly assaulted the city. So Russia’s fondness for the siege is evidently not unique to Ukraine. The methods Russian forces employ in Syria are different than those in Ukraine; for example, in Syria they use airpower in lieu of the rocket and artillery fire in Ukraine. But the approach—use of the siege to achieve political ends—is the same in both...

Donetsk Airport was a light skirmish by Eastern Front standards. The Ukrainians fell into yet another Russian trap and refused to extricate their besieged men or reinforce them sufficiently. BUT here is the critical missing piece that is often overlooked....in 2014 and we are talking about 2014...the UAF was undermanned......poorly trained and equally poorly equipped....the fighting of the Cyborgs against largely Russian active duty forces ie Spetsnaz gave the UAF a massive morale boost and gave the UAF time to reorg and requip as the Russian military was busy trying to take the airport as a prestige win...actually very similar to the Texas Alamo fight that gave the Texans a chance to reorg under Gen Sam Houston and attack Mexican Gen Santa Anna winning Texas independence...

Cyborgs knew that it was a lost fight but holding out every single day gave the UAF one more day o the battlefield..

If we look at the Debaltseve encirclement....taken by truly Russian forces after repeated failures by Cossacks to take the town.....Debaltseve was in fact ceded to Ukraine in Minsk 2 YET Putin demanded it be taken and thus kept the Minsk 2 negotiations ongoing as long as possible to ensure his troops won Debaltseve.....

Take a reread of the Merkel comments and then Putin's crowing in his Norway visit that UAF had been surrounded and beaten by truck drivers and miners...BUT then was totally surprised when told by reporters UAF was able to fully pull out all troops and most of their heavy weapons....his comment was he did not believe it......

Actually pulling 3500 and weapons out of a Russian encirclement is a major feat....while fighting all the way out....

The Russian hacking and the Russian ties to Team Tramp are getting a tad harder and firmer in the last week....

THIS is a serious warning to all users of Kaspersky Internet Security software...for the last several years Kaspersky was privy to a number of types of free in the wild malware that they had known about but had not informed the rest of the global internet security companies about allowing them to upgrade their own security tools...many accused Kaspersky of unfair competition....

SOME of us have questioned who Kaspersky in the end answers to as they reside in Russia and their CEO is close personal friends to the FSB General...Kasperskly CEO fluffed off those worries stating his customer database is secure and protected and has no connections to the FSB.
BUT with events in Russia over the last two years and the tightening of Russian FSB control since Ukraine...that fluff off excuse can no longer hold water..

REMEMBER the ultra secret NSA internet company "The Equation Company" that worked for 15 or so years undetected on the internet was "discovered" by Kaspersky Labs...when even US companies had not discovered them.

NOW through this arrest for treason being charged against a FSB Major...actually being publicly made is first of all amazing and secondly the assumption is it is tied to the Russian hacking and Russian influence operations during the Trump campaign....hence the massive overreaction of the FSB....

It is interesting that via Russia news media it comes out that Kaspersky has a Major Crimes Lab run by a cyber expert who is a MAJ in the FSB when all along Kaspersky CEO has said they have no connections to the Russian FSB outside of his being friends with the FSB General...now we see FSB cyber personnel employed by Kaspersky...

Kaspersky confirmed arrest of its cyber-crime chief on charges for treason, He access to state secret due to co's collaboration with FSB.

Maj. Ruslan Stoyanov, Chief of Cyber Crime at Kaspersky, arrested along with FSB Cyber Security Deputy Chief Ser. MIhailov since December.

There is possible tie in back to the top former FSB General who was found also in DEC dead (killed was the first report but a week later changed to heart attack) in the backseat of his car in Moscow.

THIS story will keep getting deeper over the coming weeks as some are now tying this to the Russian hacking in the US...the Russian top hackers arrested in Prague and Spain and links now to certain Russian mafia types in the US who had ties to Trump.....

HERE is what is known as of today....

1. Sergey Mihailov was arguably the top internet authority at FSB, holding huge sway over the internet business in RU. It seems Mihailov

2. is charged with treason for "passing information to foreign information for money brokered by top cyber security company officer (=Stoyanov)

3. So the story is taking shape. Kaspersky's Stoyanov convinced (bribed) FSB top internet sec officer to share data on RU hacking. With whom?

4. Clearly "Steele" is one poss. answer. But it might be directly to CIA. Remember what Clapper said on FoxNews last week?

BTW....

Solovey on the Shape of the Emerging Putin-Trump ‘Big Deal’ on Ukraine and Much Else

Staunton, January 30 – Valery Solovey, one of the best connected and most thoughtful of Moscow’s foreign policy commentators, says that the telephone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin was the “first step toward ‘a big deal’” between the two not only over bilateral ties but also over a re-division of the world that will leave many countries at Russia’s mercy.
The MGIMO professor outlines what he sees as the seven most important aspects of such a deal in a Facebook post that subsequently has been picked up by other outlets.

Solovey’s seven points of a possible “deal” between Putin and Trump are:
1. “Moscow considers that a personal meeting of Putin and Trump will be marked by mutual understanding and can lay the groundwork for a strategic deal.”
2. “In the new American administration there are influential people who think that agreement with Russia corresponds to the national interests of the US. Expert workups of these agreements have already begun.”
3. “For the US, the main themes of the deal are the destruction of ISIS and restraining Iran and China. For Russia, they are the de facto recognition of a new geopolitical status quo, a recognition of the post-Soviet space (except for the Baltics) as a zone of Russian influence, a normalization of relations with NATO, and a decisive easing of sanctions.”
4. “A mass joint operation of the US and Russia against ISIS (the theater of military operations in addition to Syria would include two or three additional countries) would prove capable of removing the objections of the Congress against a deal with Russia.”
5. “Regarding the policy of post-sanctions Iran, Moscow now has poorly concealed objections so that a firm base for a future agreement exists.”
6. “For Russia, it is critically important to avoid complications with china, therefore the potential model of agreement with the US regarding China may be formed not on a military-political but on a geo-economic basis involving massive economic cooperation in Siberia and the Far East, with the involvement of South Korea and Japan.”
7. “Regarding Ukraine, the position is the following: to give guarantees that the Russians will not seize Ukraine, and in the future to allow the two neighboring sides to agree among themselves. The US has other priorities.”
It is important to remember that Solovey’s conclusions, however accurate they may be as a statement about where Putin and Trump are now, may not be what any final “deal” will look like: There are simply too many players in both Russia and the US to be certain of that. But they do point to two disturbing possibilities in the former Soviet space.
On the one hand, if Solovey is right, Trump is prepared to leave the 11 former Soviet republics to face Russian power on their own, something that will represent a betrayal of what has been American policy since 1991.

Moscow apparently is prepared to recognize that the Baltic countries are out of its zone, but any Putin promise to not try to take Ukraine is worthless.
And on the other, in the MGIMO analyst’s view, Trump and Putin are prepared to launch a major military campaign against ISIS not because it would really defeat Islamist radicalism – the experience of Syria shows how unlikely that is -- than because it could serve as a means for Trump to marginalize critics in the Congress of his all-too-obvious tilt toward Russia.

Given the gratitude that Trump would likely have for such additional Russian assistance in US domestic politics, it would be most unlikely that the US president would do anything to block Putin’s authoritarianism and imperial pretensions in Eurasia, guaranteeing not only more violence there but destroying what is left of US credibility more generally.
#
And tragically, if Solovey is right, Trump apparently is only concerned about containing Islamic radicalism and China and is prepared to yield to Russia on everything else. Thus his constant promise to “make America great again” will in the first instance contribute to making Russia great again even as it diminishes America’s influence and standing in the world.

From RFE/RL: http://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-russia-creeping-offensive-escalation-fighting/28268104.html

From WIB: https://warisboring.com/russia-unleashes-artillery-in-eastern-ukraine-fba04677463d#.d7o26ww4t

According to journalist Christopher Miller, former editor at Kyiv Post, the Ukrainian Army has been engaged in a “creeping offensive” since mid-December by advancing into the no-man’s land between the Ukrainian and insurgent front lines. The insurgents finally became aware of the situation and have launched massive artillery barrages at Ukrainian lines and have launched at least two failed counter-offensives.

This boldness on the part of Kyiv seems to be due to Ukraine’s improving military position as well as frustration with the stalemate, and there are calls for another attempt to liberate or reconquer all of Donbas.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/01/ukraine-clashes-leave-several-dead-and-test-trumps-russia-stance

Since the Russian troop commanded Russian mercenaries started their attack immediately after the Putin/Trump telephone call...19 UAF KIAs...and 55 WIAs...and the fighting is unusually heavy....

Parts of east Ukraine are on the brink of a humanitarian crisis as the worst violence for a year in the conflict between Kiev and Russia-backed separatists has left up to 19 dead and thousands of people without water and heating in freezing temperatures.

The violence is an early test of Donald Trump’s stated desire for better US relations with Russia. Kiev has watched nervously as Trump has repeatedly praised Vladimir Putin and floated the idea of lifting sanctions.

The conflict in Ukraine has raged for nearly three years and cost more than 10,000 lives. A ceasefire was agreed in Minsk two years ago, and although little progress has been made since on a political solution, large-scale clashes have been rare over the past year.

However, in the last few days both sides have accused the other of using Grad systems, imprecise weapons that rain down multiple rockets over a wide area.

On Wednesday the Ukrainian military said three soldiers had died overnight, and separatist authorities claimed four civilians had been killed.
'It's a pretty disturbing time for Ukraine': Trump's Russia ties unnerve Kiev

In a clear sign that US policy towards Russia could indeed be heading for a sharp change of course under Trump, the state department made no criticism of Russia or the separatist side, in contrast to most of its statements in response to similar spikes in violence in the past.
The acting state department spokesman Mark Toner said the US was “deeply concerned” by the violence and called for “an immediate, sustained ceasefire”.
However, the statement stopped short of apportioning blame.
Russia’s state newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta excitedly noted the change in tone. “Washington is not blaming the unrecognised republics for breaking the ceasefire, is not stating any support for Kiev, is not saying a single word about the role of Russia …

Different variations of these elements were, as a rule, a key part of all statements of Ukraine under Barack Obama’s administration.”

The state department statement was markedly different in tone to comments from the US mission to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is staffed by career diplomats and may be out of step with the new mood in Washington.

“Russia and the separatists initiated the violence in Avdiivka,” said the US chargé d’affaires to the OSCE, Kate Byrnes. “We call on Russia to stop the violence, honour the ceasefire, withdraw heavy weapons and end attempts to seize new territory beyond the line of contact.”

There are several rounds of US and EU sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Crimea and actions in east Ukraine. Trump has suggested it could be time to lift them, and has spoken of the potential for a grand deal with Putin. The two leaders spoke by telephone at the weekend and agreed to meet soon.

Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko, said during a meeting with security officials on Tuesday: “The shelling is massive. Who would dare to talk about lifting the sanctions in such circumstances?”

In Moscow, officials accused Kiev of provoking the fighting to derail the rapprochement between Putin and Trump. “Kiev is trying to use the fighting it provoked itself as a pretext to refuse to observe the Minsk agreement and blame Russia,” the foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said on Wednesday.

Fighting has centred on the town of Avdiivka, which lies a few miles from the separatist capital, Donetsk, but is controlled by Ukrainian authorities. The violence has come during a cold snap, with temperatures falling as low as minus 18C.

East Ukraine: on the frontline of Europe's forgotten war
Giovanna Barberis, Unicef’s representative in Ukraine, said: “Not only are the lives of thousands of children in Avdiivka, and on all sides of the conflict, at risk, but to make matters worse the lack of water and electricity means that homes are becoming dangerously cold and health conditions deteriorating as we speak.”

Also on Wednesday, Ukraine’s defence minister, Stepan Poltorak, claimed a Ukrainian military cargo plane had been shot at from a Russian-held gas rig on the Black Sea. “The shot damaged the plane. The crew were not hurt,” he wrote on Facebook.

So far there has been no comment on the increased violence in Ukraine from Trump’s inner circle. The new US president has repeatedly made favourable statements about Russia and Putin and signalled a very different approach towards Moscow. This month Trump tweeted: “Both countries will, perhaps, work together to solve some of the many great and pressing problems and issues of the WORLD!”

Diplomats who served during the Obama administration have cautioned against making deals with Russia. “For almost three years the United States has worked closely with our European partners to support a peaceful resolution to the conflict through full implementation of the Minsk agreements, including by using sanctions to encourage Putin to comply,” said Dan Baer, formerly the US ambassador to the OSCE. “This should continue to be US policy going forward; anything else would be irresponsible.”

Reports suggest Russia engages in psychological warfare in Avdiyivka - media In a disturbing echo of the battle for Debaltsevo two years ago, there are reports that SMS text messages are being broadcast to Ukrainian soldiers and residents in Avdiyivka, containing threats and warnings, according to Interpretermag.com.

https://www.unian.info/war/1754086-reports-suggest-russia-engages-in-psychological-warfare-in-avdiyivka-media.html

Examples of such threats have been posted on social networks, Interpretermag.com reported.

Translation: #Avdiyivka look what SMS messages are coming in: "Ukrainian soldier, you're all just meat for your own commanders." Another pair of messages via Pyotr Dudnik on Facebook:

Translation: "Soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, they will find you when the snow melts." "ATO fighter, this winter will be for you like the one for the Germans outside Stalingrad."
As some have already noted on Twitter, the broadcasting of such messages is likely performed by Russian electronic warfare units. During the battle for Debaltsevo, which ended with Russian regular forces taking the city on February 18, 2015, Ukrainian

Viktor Kovalenko, an officer in Ukraine's 40th Infantry Battalion at the time, described their use: During daily attacks in January–February, the Russian-sponsored terrorists used portable cell transmitters to deliver fake and provocative text messages to our mobiles, in order to instigate anger or panic among our troops and destabilize order in our units.

For example, on 12 February – on the very day the Minsk-2 peace agreement was signed – many of our servicemen received the same SMS, composed in a Russian criminal-jargon style, declaring that President Poroshenko “betrayed us, thus he should be killed”. Another fake message, received at the beginning of February, was addressed to ordinary soldiers, saying that their commander (with no name given) had fled to the city of Kramatorsk, thus “all of us were going to flee tonight as well”. Indeed, the terrorists had been taking control of our cell phones for up to 5–10 minutes, in order to deliver their propaganda messages. Sure, the SMS texts were anonymous and false.

And not one of us fled, not one of us left our positions. Many times our unit commanders banned the use of cell phones in the battle zone, but our servicemen’s wish to reach relatives was so strong that they often ignored the ban and tried to catch any signal as best they could.

Russian RB-314V Leer-3 electronic warfare systems have been documented in Donetsk and, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, working in conjunction with Orlan-10 drones, are able to jam GSM mobile communications and broadcast SMS messages.

Right now yes....Russians are using the typical WW2 artillery tactic for a breakthrough of pounding fixed positions into dust.and then attacking over the destroyed defense point....looking for a breakthrough point for their armor but are cautious due an strong ATM presence....

UAF has negated that by thinning out those in the bunkered front line...just enough to hold at first a ground attack and now has placed mobile mech infantry units (BNs) in a staggered formation behind the artillery ranges as a QRF with punch...if a breakthrough is achieved....

(CNN)Fighting in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian armed forces is escalating, officials have warned.
A higher number of ceasefire violations were reported between Sunday and Monday evenings, compared with the previous 24 hours, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine said Monday.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said eight Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the Donbass region in two days.

"Russian occupation forces carried out massive attacks across the contact line using all available weapons, including (artillery, mortars and tanks) -- all prohibited by the Minsk agreements -- and small arms," the ministry said. At least 26 troops were wounded.

Interesting. The thinking seems to be that the UAF may have bitten off more than it can chew, and that while it has improved significantly, particularly in terms of quantity, qualitative reforms have been difficult to enact. Certainly the UAF is now experienced in terms of trench and low-level warfare, but can it withstand another encirclement by regular Russian forces as was the case at Ilovaisk and Debaltsevo? Any sources (English please)?

Admittedly these advances were in "gray areas", bringing the frontlines closer together, and Debaltsevo should have been in Ukrainian hands per Minsk II. Having said that, it would be considered an offensive, just as Russia invaded Chechnya in 1994 and 1999, and Georgia invaded South Ossetia in 2008.

The term offensive is one of those misused words...if in Minsk 2 it states location X then UAF now has the power to either take X or to defend X.......

While they are taking loses manpower wise they are chewing up Russian mercenary units and Russian commanders are also among those being killed...

And a big difference...in previous strong mercenary ground attacks...UAF has often not returned fire in order to not be accused of breaking Minsk 2....

Now they return fire immediately and strongly.....

Yet Kiev accepted the loss of Debaltsevo and other deviations from Minsk II for 2 years, before launching an offensive. Moscow has gone to great lengths to convince Kiev that it does not have a military solution.

What happens when Russia takes punitive action? To my mind, this offensive was an attempt to keep the conflict front and center in EU and NATO thinking, but it seems to be a roll of the dice in the manner of Tbilisi.

Moscow can claim an egregious violation of Minsk II and note that the Russian Air Force can pound the UA to death before any Javelins, TOWs or Patriots can be supplied and deployed. Russia may well decide that the loss of Kharkiv or Mariupol would suffice as a lesson. Did the "gray zone" incursion truly result in any strategic gains other than MSM attention?

You do know that Russia is fighting with one hand behind its back, right? What happens when the other one comes out?
