WARNING free Russian cell app is a RIS backdoor tracking app.....was even being pushed by Trump's daughter Ivanka.....

ASK the Trump administration if they knew that a free ware cell app being pushed by the Trump daughter Ivanka and Russian software types was in fact a spy app for the Russian SVR and GRU collecting movement data on each phone it was installed on???? warning came via social media not US IT companies and or US IC......

12h after getting exposed as RUS IC asset @skyguru_app backpedals, gets caught red-handedly.

THIS is the second Russian freeware app caught providing cell data back to RIS....first app called PRISUM....an number of Russian free games are also infected and controlled by RIS....

I find it mildly entertaining @skyguru_app claims their double citizenship is sufficient for plausible denial...claiming Russian and Israeli....

Russian app @IvankaTrump & Russian fake news channels are selling is registered in closed town of Snezhinsk in Chelyabinsk Oblast, #Russia.

Like this is something new?

LONDON -- “Russia is clearly testing NATO and the West,” Britain’s defense minister warned Thursday night. “It is seeking to expand its sphere of influence, destabilize countries and weaken the alliance.”
Michael Fallon said Vladimir Putin had sought, since the fall of the Soviet Union, to compete against the West, using deliberate misinformation and hacking to undermine Western governments and bolster populist sentiment.
“We see a country that, in weaponizing misinformation, has created what we might now see as the post-truth age,” said Fallon.

AdamG,

This was speech by Michael Fallon, the UK's Defence Secretary, was odd. First it was given @ St Andrews University, Scotland and appears to have been a response to a critical parliamentary report - which the MoD "spin doctors" ensured got ample coverage, diverting attention.

So what did the parliamentary report say? One passage in the BBC's report on the speech:
Meanwhile MPs have warned that a skills shortage and "chaotic" handling of personal data breaches are undermining confidence in the UK government's ability to protect its own infrastructure and economy from cyber attacks.

From a longer BBC report, which starts with:
A skills shortage and "chaotic" handling of personal data breaches are undermining confidence in the government's ability to protect the UK from cyber attacks, MPs have warned.

So. Indicator?

I am sure Fallon's invitation to St. Andrews was longstanding, with a text prepared - perhaps even suitable for a Scottish audience - and then appears to have been changed to make remarks about the cyber threat. Secondly whatever its academic standing St. Andrews is unlikely to get the fullest media coverage.

From a 2016 post by Outlaw09: From the archives: the Soviet military strategy of maskirovka dates back decades:http://warontherocks.com/2016/05/a-d...ling-red-army/

From AdamG in 2016: Maskirovka’ Is Russian Secret War

Sneaky tactics are an old Russian tradition:
The term is maskirovka, which in Russian literally means “something masked.” Maskirovka has its roots in the word “masquerade,” a synonym for “disguise.” It is a tactic as old as the Trojan horse … and a favorite of the Russian military.

“The Russians embrace maskirovka because it works,” said James Miller, managing editor of The Interpreter, a daily online journal that translates media from the Russian press and blogosphere into English for use by analysts and policymakers.

The staff at The Interpreter has tracked numerous examples of what they say are maskirovka tactics, Miller told War is Boring. What’s more, what they have found aligns with intelligence reports that NATO has released.

Ransomware for Dummies: Anyone Can Do It

https://youtu.be/5WJ2KHoo5Fo

Among today’s fastest-growing cybercrime epidemics is “ransomware,” malicious software that encrypts your computer files, photos, music and documents and then demands payment in Bitcoin to recover access to the files.

A big reason for the steep increase#in ransomware attacks in recent years comes from the proliferation of point-and-click tools sold in the cybercrime underground that make it stupid simple for anyone to begin extorting others for money.

Recently, I came across an extremely slick and professionally produced video advertisement promoting the features and usability of “Philadelphia,” a ransomware-as-a-service crimeware package that is sold for roughly $400 to would-be cybercriminals who dream of carving out their own ransomware empires.

This stunning advertisement does a thorough job of showcasing Philadelphia’s many features, including the ability to generate PDF reports and charts of victims “to track your malware campaigns” as well as the ability to plot victims around the world using Google Maps.

“Everything just works,” claim the proprietors of Philadelphia. “Get your lifetime copy. One payment. Free updates. No monthly fees.”

One interesting feature of this ransomware package is the ability to grant what the program’s architects call “mercy.”
This refers to the desperate and heartbreaking pleas that ransomware purveyors often hear from impecunious victims whose infections have jeopardized some priceless and irreplaceable data — such as photos of long lost loved ones.

I’ll revisit the authors of this ransomware package in a future post. For now, just check out their ad. It’s fairly chilling.

Some comments on the Wikileaks CIA/#vault7 leak

I thought I'd write up some notes about the Wikileaks CIA "#vault7" leak. This post will be updated frequently over the next 24 hours.

The CIA didn't remotely hack a TV. The docs are clear that they can update the software running on the TV using a USB drive. There's no evidence of them doing so remotely over the Internet. If you aren't afraid of the CIA breaking in an installing a listening device, then you should't be afraid of the CIA installing listening software.

The CIA didn't defeat Signal/WhattsApp encryption. The CIA has some exploits for Android/iPhone. If they can get on your phone, then of course they can record audio and screenshots. Technically, this bypasses/defeats encryption -- but such phrases used by Wikileaks arehighly misleading, since nothing related to Signal/WhatsApp is happening. What's happening is the CIA is bypassing/defeating the phone. Sometimes. If they've got an exploit for it, or can trick you into installing their software.

There's no overlap or turf war with the NSA. The NSA does "signals intelligence", so they hack radios and remotely across the Internet. The CIA does "humans intelligence", so they hack locally, with a human. The sort of thing they do is bribe, blackmail, or bedazzle some human "asset" (like a technician in a nuclear plant) to stick a USB drive into a slot. All the various military, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies have hacking groups to help them do their own missions.

The CIA isn't more advanced than the NSA. Most of this dump is child's play, simply malware/trojans cobbled together from bits found on the Internet. Sometimes they buy more advanced stuff from contractors, or get stuff shared from the NSA. Technologically, they are far#behind the NSA in sophistication and technical expertise.

The CIA isn't hoarding 0days. For one thing, few 0days were mentioned at all. The CIA's techniques rely upon straightforward hacking, not super secret 0day hacking Second of all, they aren't keeping 0days back in a vault somewhere -- if they have 0days, they are using them.

The VEP process is nonsense.#Activists keep mentioning the "vulnerability equities process", in which all those interested in 0days within the government has a say in what happens to them, with the eventual goal that they be disclosed to vendors. The VEP is nonsense. The activist argument is nonsense. As far as I can tell, the VEP is designed as busy work to keep people away from those who really use 0days, such as the NSA and the CIA. If they spend millions of dollars buying 0days because it has that value in intelligence operations, they aren't going to destroy that value by disclosing to a vendor. If VEP forces disclosure, disclosure still won't happen, the NSA will simply stop buying vulns.

There's no false flags. In several places, the CIA talks about making sure that what they do isn't so unique, so it can't be attributed to them. However, Wikileaks's press release hints that the "UMBRAGE" program is deliberately stealing techniques from Russia to use as a false-flag operation. This is nonsense. For example, the DNC hack attribution was live command-and-control servers simultaneously used against different Russian targets -- not a few snippets of code.

This hurts the CIA a lot. Already, one AV researcher has told me that a virus they once suspected came from the Russians or Chinese can now be attributed to the CIA, as it matches the description perfectly to something in the leak. We can develop anti-virus and intrusion-detection signatures based on this information that will defeat much of what we read in these documents. This would put a multi-year delay in the CIA's development efforts. Plus, it'll now go on a witch-hunt looking for the leaker, which will erode morale. Update:#Three extremely smart and knowledgeable people who I respect disagree, claiming it won't hurt the CIA a lot. I suppose I'm focusing on "hurting the cyber abilities" of the CIA, not the CIA as a whole, which mostly is non-cyber in function.

The CIA is not cutting edge.#A few days ago, Hak5 started selling "BashBunny", a USB hacking tool more advanced than the USB tools in the leak. The CIA seems to get most of their USB techniques from open-source projects, such Travis Goodpseeds "GoodFET" project.

The CIA isn't spying on us.#Snowden revealed how the NSA was surveilling all Americans. Nothing like that appears in the CIA dump. It's all legitimate spy stuff (assuming you think spying on foreign adversaries is legitimate).

Update #2: How is hacking cars and phones not SIGINT (which is the NSA's turf)? #The answer is via physical access. For example, they might have a device that plugs into the ODBII port on the car that quickly updates the firmware of the brakes. Think of it as normal spy activity (e.g. cutting a victim's brakes), but now with cyber.

WikiLeaks' CIA dump came with a huge dezinformatsiya campaign that seemed poised and ready to exploit it.

It appears many in Washington have known about the DNC/DCCC documents stolen by Russians at least in August.
http://www.bluedotdaily.com/paul-ryan-now-implicated-in-russian-scandal/#

The presidential election victory of Donald Trump may not be the only thing made illegitimate by Russian tampering.# It seems that the GOP congressional majority may also be called into question thanks to our Russian friends (?).
According to the New York Times:
The impact of the information released by the hackers on candidates like Ms. Taddeo in Florida and others in nearly a dozen House races around the country was largely lost in the focus on the hacking attacks against the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. But this untold story underscores the effect the Russian operation had on the American electoral system.[…]
The intrusions in House races in states including Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Ohio, Illinois, New Mexico and North Carolina can be traced to tens of thousands of pages of documents taken from the D.C.C.C., which shares a Capitol Hill office building with the Democratic National Committee.
“This is not a traditional ###-for-tat on a partisan political campaign, where one side hits the other and then you respond,” said Kelly Ward, executive director of the D.C.C.C. “This is an attack by a foreign actor that had the intent to disrupt our election, and we were the victims of it.”
The information gathered in this cyber attack was then fed to a Florida PAC supporting Paul Ryan, according to a Salon report:
After Florida Democratic House candidate Joe Garcia appeared at a primary debate against opponent Annette Taddeo with a printout of some of the hacked DCCC documents to attack Taddeo, the National Republican Campaign Committee and The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC with close ties to House Speaker Paul Ryan, used the hacked documents to defeat him in the general.
And it appears many in Washington have known about the attacks for a while:
After Guccifer 2.0 targeted the chair of the DCCC, New Mexico’s Ray Lujan, the Democrats sent a letter to his Republican counterpart on Aug. 29 arguing that “the NRCC’s use of documents stolen by the Russians plays right into the hands of one of the United States’ most dangerous adversaries,” and if the National Republican Campaign Committee continued using the materials, the GOP “will be complicit in aiding the Russian government in its effort to influence American elections.”

WikiLeaks Dumps Docs on CIA’s Hacking Tools

WikiLeaks on Tuesday dropped one of its most explosive word bombs ever: A secret trove of documents apparently stolen from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detailing methods of hacking everything from smart phones and TVs to compromising Internet routers and computers. KrebsOnSecurity is still digesting much of this fascinating data cache, but here are some first impressions based on what I’ve seen so far.
First, to quickly recap what happened: In a post on its site, WikiLeaks said the release — dubbed “Vault 7” — was the largest-ever publication of confidential documents on the agency. WikiLeaks is promising a series of these document#caches; this first one includes more than 8,700 files allegedly taken from a high-security network inside CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Va.

The home page for the CIA’s “Weeping Angel” project, which sought to exploit flaws that could turn certain 2013-model Samsung “smart” TVs into remote listening posts.
“Recently, the CIA lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal including malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized ‘zero day’ exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation,” WikiLeaks wrote. “This extraordinary collection, which amounts to more than several hundred million lines of code, gives its possessor the entire hacking capacity of the CIA. The archive appears to have been circulated among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive.”
Wikileaks said it was calling attention to the#CIA’s global covert hacking program, its malware arsenal and dozens of weaponized exploits against “a wide range of U.S. and European company products, includ[ing] Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows and even Samsung TVs, which are turned into covert microphones.”
The documents for the most part don’t appear to include the computer code needed to exploit previously unknown flaws in these products, although WikiLeaks says those exploits may show up in a future dump. This collection is probably best thought of as an internal corporate wiki used by multiple CIA researchers who methodically found and documented weaknesses in a variety of popular commercial and consumer electronics.
For example, the data dump lists a number of exploit “modules” available to compromise various models of consumer routers made by companies like Linksys, Microtik and Zyxel, to name a few.#CIA researchers also collated several pages worth of probing and testing weaknesses#in business-class devices#from Cisco,#whose powerful routers carry a decent portion of the Internet’s traffic on any given day.#Craig Dods, a researcher with Cisco’s rival Juniper, delves into greater detail on the Cisco bugs for anyone interested (Dods says he found no exploits for Juniper products in the cache, yet). Meanwhile, Cisco has published its own blog post on the matter.
WHILE MY SMART TV GENTLY WEEPS
Some of the exploits discussed in these leaked CIA documents appear to reference full-on, remote access vulnerabilities. However, a great many of the documents I’ve looked at seem to refer to attack concepts or half-finished exploits that may be limited by very specific requirements — such as physical access to the targeted device.
The “Weeping Angel” project’s page from 2014 is a prime example: It discusses ways to turn certain 2013-model Samsung “smart TVs” into remote listening devices; methods for disabling the LED lights that indicate the TV is on; and suggestions for fixing a problem with the exploit in which the WiFi interface on the TV is disabled when the exploit is run.
ToDo / Future Work:
Build a console cable
Turn on or leave WiFi turned on in Fake-Off mode
Parse unencrypted audio collection
Clean-up the file format of saved audio. Add encryption??
According to the documentation, Weeping Angel worked as long as the target hadn’t upgraded the firmware on the Samsung TVs. It also said the firmware upgrade eliminated the “current installation method,” which apparently required the insertion of a booby-trapped USB device into the TV.
Don’t get me wrong: This is a serious leak of fairly sensitive information. And I sincerely hope Wikileaks decides to work with researchers and vendors to coordinate the patching of flaws leveraged by the as-yet unreleased exploit code archive that apparently accompanies this documentation from the CIA.
But in reading the media coverage of this leak, one might be led to believe that even if you are among the small minority of Americans who have chosen to migrate more of their communications to privacy-enhancing technologies like Signal or WhatsApp, it’s all futility#because the CIA can break it anyway.
Perhaps a future cache of documents from this CIA division will change things on#this front, but an admittedly cursory examination of these documents indicates that the CIA’s methods for weakening the privacy of these#tools all seem to require attackers to first succeed in deeply subverting the security of the mobile device — either through a remote-access vulnerability in the underlying operating system or via physical access to the target’s phone.
As Bloomberg’s tech op-ed writer Leonid Bershidsky notes, the documentation released here shows that these attacks are “not about mass surveillance — something that should bother the vast majority of internet users — but about monitoring specific targets.”
By way of example, Bershidsky points to a tweet yesterday from Open Whisper Systems (the makers of the Signal private messaging app) which observes that, “The CIA/Wikileaks story today is about getting malware onto phones, none of the exploits are in Signal or break Signal Protocol encryption.”
The company went on to say that because more online services are now using end-to-end encryption to prevent prying eyes from reading communications that are intercepted in-transit, intelligence agencies are being pushed “from undetectable mass surveillance to expensive, high-risk, targeted attacks.”

A tweet from Open Whisper Systems, the makers of the popular mobile privacy app Signal.
As limited as some of these exploits appear to be, the methodical approach of the countless CIA researchers who apparently collaborated to unearth these flaws is impressive and speaks to a key problem with most commercial hardware and software today: The vast majority of vendors#would rather spend the time and money marketing their products than embark on the costly, frustrating, time-consuming and continuous process of stress-testing their own products and working with a range of researchers to find these types of vulnerabilities before the CIA or other nation-state-level hackers can.
Of course, not every company has a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars just to do basic security research. According to#this NBC News report from October 2016, the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence (the alleged source of the documents discussed in this story) has a staff of hundreds and a budget in the hundreds of millions: Documents#leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden indicate the CIA requested $685.4 million for computer network operations in 2013, compared to $1 billion by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).
TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY?
NBC also reported that the#CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence was tasked by the Obama administration last year to devise cyber attack strategies in response to Russia’s alleged involvement in the siphoning of emails from Democratic National Committee servers as well as from Hillary Clinton‘s campaign chief John Podesta. Those emails were ultimately published online by Wikileaks last summer.
the “wide-ranging ‘clandestine’ cyber operation designed to harass and ’embarrass’ the Kremlin leadership was being lead by the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence.” Could this attack have been the Kremlin’s response to an action or actions by the CIA’s cyber center?
NBC reported that the “wide-ranging ‘clandestine’ cyber operation designed to harass and ’embarrass’ the Kremlin leadership was being lead by the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence.” Could this attack have been the Kremlin’s response to an action or actions by the CIA’s cyber center? Perhaps time (or future leaks) will tell.
Speaking of the NSA, the Wikileaks dump comes hot on the heels of a similar disclosure by The Shadow Brokers, a hacking group that said it stole malicious software from the Equation Group, a highly-skilled and advanced threat actor that has been closely tied to the NSA.
What’s interesting is this Wikileaks cache includes a longish discussion thread among CIA employees who openly discuss where the NSA erred in allowing experts to tie the NSA’s coders to malware#produced by the Equation Group. As someone who spends a great deal of time unmasking cybercriminals who invariably leak their identity and/or location through poor operational security, I was utterly fascinated by#this exchange.
BUG BOUNTIES VS BUG STOCKPILES
Many are using this latest deluge from WikiLeaks to reopen the debate over whether there is enough oversight of the CIA’s hacking activities.#The New York Times called yesterday’s WikiLeaks disclosure “the latest coup for the antisecrecy organization and a serious blow to the CIA, which uses its hacking abilities to carry out espionage against foreign targets.”

BTW...it actually appears that this was the method being used on that Russian Moscow based Alfabank and Trump Tower set of email servers as the number of bits used is low on each communication set but enough to open an email account if it was a login and then clicking on draft....especially if in fact Jester is right that Iodine was used to setup the servers...

Wikileaks is Connected to Russia – Despite Their Claims
March 12, 2017 ~ patribotics

By Laurelai Bailey

Wikileaks has time and time again denied any connections to Russia or the Russian state, but – like Donald Trump – they are lying. This weekend, it was exposed on Twitter that they acquired major Russian servers – from a known hacker – one week before the Podesta emails were released.

I will walk you through the proof, since its a little complex for non computer experts. So let’s start with a primer.

All websites on the internet have an address, much like houses in the real world. This address are usually names and things you recognize, like google.com or amazon.com. But behind that address there are a series of numbers, unique to each server known as internet protocol addresses. If you have ever had to log in to your wireless router, you wound up typing a number into your browser like 192.168.1.1, this is an IP address.

Now IP addresses have physical locations, in the real world, and tools exist to discover where those addresses are.

Wikileaks -like every other website – has servers and IP addresses behind the domain name “wikileaks.org”. When we do a command on a linux machine called “dig” we find out all of the IP addresses behind the domain name. Here is the output of the dig command. Don’t worry if you can’t understand this part – just scroll down to the rest of the article. The writing in the middle explains it, but for those that want proof, we need to list how we get from a to b.

dig wikileaks.org

This information is the same for both IP addresses, and if you notice the last modified date as “2016-09-30” that is when the IP address’s pointing to a server was changed. So we can safely bet that this is when wikileaks added these addresses to their systems.

In turn, this proves Wikileaks gained Russian hosting on September 30th 2016, one week before the Podesta emails were made public. Wikileaks got Russian Federation virtual addresses one week before the Podesta emails. Let that sink in.

Now the actual owner of the IP addresses is a man by the name of Peter Chayanov, whose IP addresses have hosted spammers and hackers, according to my sources, who work in internet backbone companies.

Chayanov’s IP space is a virtual equivalent of a bad neighborhood that makes you lock your car doors when you drive through it. So this further implies a connection to Wikileaks and Russian hackers. That sort of stuff is Chayanov’s day job. And, further, it’s important to remember, this web host also stays around at the consent of the Russian government despite (or because of?) being known cyber criminal hosts.

The other addresses I told you to ignore before? When you do a whois on wikileaks itself you get shown IP’s in Amsterdam and Zurich, ones that make much more sense to have since they are in countries with strong freedom of speech and transparency laws. Places you would want an organization like that in, but the Russian IP spaces, to be visible to you have to be dug for carefully to find them. They did a fairly good job obfuscating it, but the records will always be able to be found.

Mr. Chayanov did not disguise his hosting carefully enough. And when he was exposed this weekend on Twitter, he made matters worse by deleting his account at once.

So why would Wikileaks, a “transparency” org acquire hosting in a country thats known to assassinate whistleblowers? Especially ones that challenge Trumps presidency? It makes no sense for people who claim to be for transparency to take up virtual residence in an autocratic nation that might try to kill them. So why would they do it? Well, it’s pretty simple; they would only be there with the consent of the Russian government, ieVladimir Putin. He wants them to be there and allows them to be there.

Why would he do that? Sounds an awful lot like putting a rattlesnake in your own bed to keep the neighbors away. That is if wikileaks was as neutral and would leak against anyone like they claim. Putin might be an autocrat, but he isn’t an idiot.

He would not allow them there unless he got something out of it for himself, like immunity to being leaked against or by having influence over what gets leaked and when. Putin like all politicians is a self interested lout and acts in ways that keep him in power. Much like many other world leaders. So wikileaks dropping info on the US alone isn’t enough to allow them to stay, he knows he would be next on the leaking list.

So that strongly suggests Russia is getting some kind of favorable or special treatment. Its also likely that the CIA was already aware of this and that this is part of the information they base their claims of Russian interference on. When you see this alone its enough to strongly suggests collusion with the Russian government either directly or indirectly.

So it seems fairly sure to me that Wikileaks is now in bed with the Russian government in some form or fashion.

Will we shortly discover that Mr. Chayanov is also connected to Guccifer2?

Here's what Rand Paul said on Face the Nation. He isn't making some broader point about warrants, he's leveling a very specific accusation.

Paul's defenders now want to shift the conversation to their general critique of 702 in order to divert from Paul's very specific falsehood.

That accusation is that NSA targets foreigners "purposefully" in order to "get to Americans," i.e. they do what's know as reverse targeting.

Over SIX MILLION of Trump's followers are fake. Paid-for Russian bots, perhaps?

So again no Russian connections...

I keep going back to the idea tha national security has two elements....

1. internal and
2. external

Right now on the interna side we have seen a strong tendency of the Trump WH to draw in adviors from the White nationalist side with Miller and Bannon...Bannon sits in the NSC....and white nationalism is the vehicle used to project white supremacy......

This is a long read but well worth reading as it is well researched and goes to a serious question I have....

Just how is it possible that these large amounts of Russian controlled bots on the social media side WERE absolutely not detected by US tech giants??

WHY did it take European social media open source analysts and IT researchers to find what Twitter or FB or Instrgram should have seen first??

AND why has Twitter been so resistent in understanding the significance of these developments and downplays it at every opportunity....

Meet Silicon Valley's Secretive Alt-Right Followers
I investigated the role of "alt-techies" in the extremist movement emboldened by Trump.

Readers of The Right Stuff long knew that founder "Mike Enoch" had two main interests: technology and white supremacy. Posts on the neo-Nazi site have included discussion of "a new blogging platform built on node.js," while other less techie content has alluded to the "chimpout" in Ferguson, putting Jews in ovens, and Trump's "top-tier troll" of Jews on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

In January, Enoch was outed as Mike Peinovich, a Manhattan-based software engineer. His unmasking highlighted a lingering question about the racist far-right movement that rose to prominence with Donald Trump's election: What support might the so-called alt-right have among techies?

Ever since I began investigating the extremist groups lining up behind Trump last spring, several of their leaders have made big claims to me about an alt-right following in Silicon Valley and across the broader tech industry. "The average alt-right-ist is probably a 28-year-old tech-savvy guy working in IT," white nationalist Richard Spencer insisted when I interviewed him a few weeks before the election. "I have seen so many people like that." Andrew Anglin, the publisher of the neo-Nazi Daily Stormer, told me he gets donations from Silicon Valley, and that Santa Clara County, home to Apple and Intel, is his site's largest traffic source.

Chuck Johnson, the publisher of the conspiracy-mongering site Got News, said he gets lots of page views from the San Francisco Bay Area.
"If you even try to posit that racism and sexism aren't why women and minorities aren't making it, that it's some combination of talent and values, people's heads just explode."

After Peinovich was outed, he also insisted to me that many techies secretly identify with the alt-right, which he attributed to a backlash against the "corporate feminist and diversity agenda" of tech companies. "The fact that speaking up about this virtually guarantees career and social suicide, as in my case, shows why so many white males in tech would be attracted to the alt-right."

None of these alt-right figures would provide any data to support their claims. As I've reported, some alt-right sites have wildly overstated their reach. Moreover, the tech industry is renowned for its globalist outlook: Public-opinion surveys conducted by a Stanford political economist have found that rank-and-file workers in Silicon Valley exhibit less racial resentment and more favorable views toward most forms of immigration than average Americans.

Nonetheless, "alt-techies," as Spencer and others call them, do appear to play a role in a movement that first incubated in the backwaters of the internet and eventually spread online with the rise of Trump. Some heroes of the far right are associated with tech: They include former Breitbart News "tech editor" Milo Yiannopoulos; the infamous neo-Nazi hacker Andrew Auernheimer (a.k.a. Weev); and the video gaming vlogger Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, whose "Pewdiepie" YouTube channel featuring Nazi-themed jokes has 54 million subscribers. (Last month Kjellberg apologized for the jokes and said he is not a Nazi.)

There are also successful figures in the tech industry who appeal to and have commingled with the alt-right: The DeploraBall, a gathering of far-right activists and conspiracy theorists during Trump's inauguration, was co-organized by software investor Jeff Giesea and attended by tech billionaire and Trump backer Peter Thiel.

San Francisco-based tech entrepreneur Curtis Yarvin is known for launching the pro-authoritarian "neoreactionary" movement and reportedly has been in contact with Trump's chief strategist, Steve Bannon. (Yarvin denies this.) Giesea and Yarvin, both of whom I interviewed, reject the "alt-right" label for its associations with white nationalism, yet they share the movement's disdain for the race and gender politics of the left. (Thiel's media representative did not respond to a request for comment from him.)

Dahua, Hikvision IoT Devices Under Siege

Dahua, the world’s second-largest maker of “Internet of Things” devices like security cameras and digital video recorders (DVRs), has shipped a software update that closes a gaping security hole in a broad swath of its products. The vulnerability allows anyone to bypass the login process for these devices and gain remote, direct control over vulnerable systems. Adding urgency to the situation, there is now code available online that allows anyone to exploit this bug and commandeer a large number of#IoT devices.
On March 5, a security researcher named Bashis posted to the Full Disclosure security mailing list exploit code for an embarrassingly simple flaw in the way many Dahua security cameras and DVRs handle authentication. These devices are designed to be controlled by a local Web server that#is accessible via a Web browser.
That server requires the user to enter a username and password, but Bashis found he could force all affected devices to cough up their usernames and a simple hashed value of the password. Armed with this information, he could effectively “pass the hash” and the corresponding username right back to the Web server and be admitted access to the device settings page. From there, he could add users and install or modify the device’s software. From Full Disclosure:
“This is so simple as:
1. Remotely download the full user database with all credentials and permissions
2. Choose whatever admin user, copy the login names and password hashes
3. Use them as source to remotely login to the Dahua devices
“This is like a damn Hollywood hack, click on one button and you are in…”
Bashis said he was so appalled at the discovery that he labeled it an#apparent “backdoor” — an undocumented means of accessing an electronic device that often only the vendor#knows about. Enraged, Bashis decided to publish his exploit code without first notifying Dahua. Later, Bashis said he changed his mind after being contacted by the company and agreed#to remove his code from the online posting.
Unfortunately, that ship may have already sailed. Bashis’s exploit code already has been copied in several other places online as of this publication.
Asked why he took down his exploit code, Bashis said in an interview with KrebsOnSecurity that “The hack is too simple, way too simple, and now I want Dahua’s users to get patched firmware’s before they will be victims to some botnet.”
In an advisory published March 6, Dahua said it has identified nearly a dozen of its products that are vulnerable, and that further review may reveal additional models also have this flaw. The company is urging users to download and install the newest firmware updates as soon as possible. Here are the models known to be affected so far:
DH-IPC-HDW23A0RN-ZS
DH-IPC-HDBW23A0RN-ZS
DH-IPC-HDBW13A0SN
DH-IPC-HDW13A0SN
DH-IPC-HFW13A0SN-W
DH-IPC-HDBW13A0SN
DH-IPC-HDW13A0SN
DH-IPC-HFW13A0SN-W
DHI-HCVR51A04HE-S3
DHI-HCVR51A08HE-S3
DHI-HCVR58A32S-S2
It’s not clear exactly how many devices worldwide may be vulnerable. Bashis says that’s a difficult question to answer, but that he “wouldn’t be surprised if 95 percent of Dahua’s product line has the same problem,” he said. “And also possible their OEM clones.”
Dahua has not yet responded to my questions or request for comment. I’ll update this post#if things change on that front.
This is the second time in a week that a major Chinese IoT firm has urgently warned its#customers to update the firmware on their devices. For weeks, experts have been warning that there are signs of attackers exploiting an unknown backdoor or equally serious vulnerability in cameras and DVR devices made by IoT giant Hikvision.
Writing for video surveillance publication IPVM, Brian Karas reported on March 2 that he was hearing from multiple Hikvision security camera and DVR users who suddenly were locked out of their devices and had new “system” user accounts added without their permission.
Karas said the devices in question all were set up to be remotely accessible over the Internet, and were running with the default credentials (12345). Karas noted that there don’t appear to be any Hikvision devices sought out by the Mirai worm — the now open-source malware#that is being used to enslave IoT devices in a botnet for launching crippling online attacks (in contrast, Dahua’s products are hugely represented in the list of systems being sought out by the Mirai worm.)
In addition, a#programmer who has long written and distributed custom firmware for Hikvision devices claims he’s found a backdoor#in “many popular Hikvision products that makes it possible to gain full admin access to the device,” wrote the user “Montecrypto” on the IoT forum IPcamtalk on Mar. 5. “Hikvision gets two weeks to come forward, acknowledge, and explain why the backdoor is there and when it is going to be removed. I sent them an email. If nothing changes, I will publish all details on March 20th, along with the firmware that disables the backdoor.”
According to IPVM’s Karas, Hikvision has not acknowledged an unpatched backdoor or any other equivalent weakness in its product. But on Mar. 2, the company issued a reminder to its integrator partners about the need to be updated to the latest firmware.

A special bulletin issued Mar. 2, 2017 by Hikvision. Image: IPVM
“Hikvision has determined that there is a scripted application specifically targeting Hikvision NVRs and DVRs that meet the following conditions: they have not been updated to the latest firmware; they are set to the default port, default user name, and default password,” the company’s statement reads. “Hikvision has required secure activation since May of 2015, making it impossible for our integrator partners to install equipment with default settings. However, it was possible, before that date, for integrators to install NVRs and DVRs with default settings. Hikvision strongly recommends that our dealer base review the security levels of equipment installed prior to June 2015 to ensure the use of complex passwords and upgraded firmware to best protect their customers.”
ANALYSIS
I don’t agree with Bashis’s conclusion that the Dahua flaw was intentional; It appears that the makers of these products simply did not invest much energy, time or money in building security into the software. Rather, security is clearly an afterthought that is bolted on afterwards with these devices, which is why nobody should trust them.
The truth is that the software that runs on a whole mess of these security cameras and DVRs is very poorly written, and probably full of more security holes just like the flaw Dahua users are dealing with right now. To hope or wish otherwise given what we know about the history of these cheap electronic devices seems sheer folly.
In December, KrebsOnSecurity warned that many Sony security cameras contained a backdoor that can only be erased by updating the firmware on the devices.
Some security experts maintain that these types of flaws can’t be easily exploited when the IoT device in question is behind a firewall. But that advice just doesn’t hold water for today’s IoT cameras and DVRs. For one thing, a great many security cameras and other IoT devices will punch a hole in your firewall straight away without your permission, using a technology called Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP).
In other cases, IoT products are incorporating peer-to-peer (P2P) technology that cannot be turned off and exposes users to even greater threats. #In that same December 2016 story referenced above, I cited research from security firm Cybereason, which found at least two previously unknown security flaws in dozens of IP camera families that are white-labeled under a number of different brands (and some without brands at all).
“Cybereason’s team found that they could easily exploit these devices even if they were set up behind a firewall,” that story noted. “That’s because all of these cameras ship with a factory-default peer-to-peer (P2P) communications capability that enables remote ‘cloud’ access to the devices via the manufacturer’s Web site — provided a customer visits the site and provides the unique camera ID stamped on the bottom of the devices.”
The story continued:
“Although it may seem that attackers would need physical access to the vulnerable devices in order to derive those unique camera IDs, Cybereason’s principal security researcher Amit Serper said the company figured out a simple way to enumerate all possible camera IDs using the manufacturer’s Web site.”
My advice? Avoid the P2P models like the plague. If you have security cameras or DVR devices that are connected to the Internet, make sure they are up to date with the latest firmware. Beyond that, consider completely blocking external network access to the devices and enabling a VPN if you truly need remote access to them.
Howtogeek.com has a decent tutorial on setting up your own VPN to enable remote access to your home or business network; on picking a decent router that supports VPNs; and installing custom firmware like DD-WRT on the router if available (because, as we can see, stock firmware usually is some horribly insecure and shoddy stuff).

Russia Tried to Use Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Assassination to Start a Race War
The plot involved the KKK, the Jewish Defense League, black militants … and a bombing

The Cold War often brings to mind visions of cloak-and-dagger spy escapades in Eastern Europe and Moscow — or the countless coups, revolutions, proxy wars and clandestine ops that pitted Communist and Western interests against one another in developing nations around the world.

Amid these sensational tropes of international espionage, it’s easy to forget the KGB and other intelligence agencies were highly active within the United States. Their exploits here weren’t quite as extravagant, but they went far beyond mundane intelligence gathering.

There were, of course, Soviet operatives in the United States who did focus strictly on intelligence. In the 1980s, a German-American spy hacked hundreds of networked military computers and sold the information to Russia, and KGB field stations established a massive surveillance program that monitored U.S. radar and satellite transmissions.

The Kremlin also ordered its agents in America to generate social unrest, undermine faith in the government and develop plans to sabotage targets in the military, energy and infrastructure sectors.

One such campaign sought to capitalize on the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — by using it as a pretext for inciting a full-blown race war.

Propaganda materials attributed to the Ku Klux Klan, black militant organizations and the Jewish Defense League aimed to aggravate ongoing tensions between those groups and compel them to engage in open hostilities against each other.

From there, in theory, the violence would spread and engulf the general public. The campaign ultimately span three decades and culminated with Operation PANDORA, a plan to bomb a historically black college in New York and blame it on the JDL.

In 1992 Vasili Mitrokhin, a former KGB archivist with the First Chief Directorate, the unit responsible for foreign intelligence gathering and operations, defected from Russia to England. He brought with him a massive trove of top-secret KGB documents, eventually sharing over 25,000 files with Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency.

The files became the basis for two books, 1999’s The Sword and the Shield and The World Was Going Our Way: The KGB and the Battle for the Third World in 2005. Mitrokhin co-authored both volumes with British historian Christopher Andrew.

The books discuss Soviet intelligence gathering activities in the United States and elsewhere, as well as the plans to attack or sabotage dams, oil pipelines, power plants and other targets on American soil. They also provide details on the KGB efforts to inflame racial tensions in hopes of provoking a race war within the United States.

The race war Moscow envisioned would, effectively, kill two birds with one stone. While the KKK was eventually a factor in the scheme, black militants and the Zionist JDL were the main emphasis. The Kremlin wanted black militants to become the dominant force in African American political discourse and social movements, and hoped to use them to take out the JDL in the process.

From the Soviet perspective, King’s call for peaceful protests and nonviolent direct action had prevented a more volatile civil rights movement from emerging. If someone such as Stokeley Carmichael or a group like the Black Panther Party took control of the movement, a civil war could erupt on the streets of America.

Forced to focus on internal conflict, the United States would at least temporarily take its eye off of its foreign interests and lose political and strategic footing on the global stage.

Carmichael was the preferred candidate, according to Mitrokhin’s source material. Despite his early work with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Carmichael had ultimately made his name by popularizing the term “Black Power.”

In 1967, he went on a global speaking tour, giving speeches in Moscow, Havana and Hanoi, in which he condemned racism and capitalism alike. In the speeches he hinted at an impending race war in the United States, referring, most likely, to the arming of the Black Panthers.
“We are preparing groups of urban guerrillas for our defense in the cities,’’ Carmichael said in Havana, according to The New York Times. “It is going to be a fight to the death.’’

Carmichael still harbored nonviolent inclinations, but he was more open to the prospect of violent resistance than King was, and his rhetoric often overlapped with that of his militant contemporaries. That, along with his popularity and influence, was good enough for Moscow.

Even if Carmichael fell short of Moscow’s more ambitious hopes and a civil war did not commence, replacing King with someone like Carmichael would still give communism a broader audience within the African American community, and potentially America at large. Carmichael and black militants were more openly sympathetic to communism than King, though the latter was not without his critiques of capitalism.

The KGB decided to hedge its bets anyway, or they just got greedy. Either way, it wasn’t enough for them to try to turn the black community against the white community. The Russians wanted to bring the Jewish community into the fray as well, particularly Zionist extremist groups such as Meir Kahane’s Jewish Defense League.

If they couldn’t get black militants to take control of the Civil Rights Movement and start a race war, perhaps they could at least get them to take out the JDL.

The Soviet Union’s propaganda department had been running an anti-Zionist and anti-Israel campaign since the early 1960s, at the latest. This was in part based on an official policy that cast Zionism as a racist and imperialist policy, but was more likely due to Soviet interests in the Persian Gulf and broader Middle East.

Moscow wanted access to Persian Gulf oil just as badly as Western countries did. The Soviet Union made inroads with some Arab nations, but it never achieved enough power in the region to gain control of the oil supplies. The Soviets increasingly laid blame for their problems in the Middle East on Israel and its ties to the West, thus making Israel and groups who support it targets.

With the goal of taking out the JDL and buttressing black militancy at the same time, the KGB began a disinformation campaign in the United States to target the JDL and undermine the U.S. government on the “Negro issue,” as Mitrokhin’s documents revealed.

In 1967 Moscow authorized Yuri Modin, the deputy director of the KGB’s Service A, to implement a strategy of portraying King as an “Uncle Tom” who was working with the the administration of Pres. Lyndon Johnson to secretly pacify the civil rights movement and prevent a violent uprising from the African-American population.

Modin, who had previously directed the Cambridge Five spy ring in England, would start the operation by using his contacts within the black press to plant articles that were critical of King. Initially, the KGB hoped to take advantage of images of the 1965 Watts riots to stir up feelings of rage. The sense was that if they could spark a certain degree of violence, King would be “swept aside by black radicals” such as Carmichael.

Mitrokhin’s materials sited in The Sword and the Shield state that Modin was authorized to do the following —

To organize, through the use of KGB residency resources in the U.S., the publication and distribution of brochures, pamphlets, and appeals denouncing the policy of the Johnson administration on the Negro question and exposing the brutal terrorist methods being used by the government to suppress the Negro rights movement.

To arrange, via available agent resources, for leading figures in the legal profession to make public statements discrediting the policy of the Johnson administration on the Negro question.

To forge and distribute through illegal channels a document showing that the John Birch Society, in conjunction with the Minutemen organization, is developing a plan for the physical elimination of leading figures in the Negro movement in the U.S.

The assassination of King in April 1968 abruptly altered the KGB’s plans. Instead of portraying King as traitor to his people and an accomplice in their oppression, it suddenly became preferable to cast him as a martyr to the cause, someone betrayed by the evil capitalist system that he sought to compromise and negotiate with.

The riots that erupted in more than 100 U.S. cities after King’s death suggested that racial tensions had perhaps reached a flash point, opening an opportunity for Moscow. The KGB revised its propaganda, but the goal remained the same.

Despite the violence after King’s assassination, and the KGB’s attempts to expand on it, the race war didn’t really come to fruition. Moscow, however, was still not ready to abandon the plan...

Wikileaks Hands “Keys” to Putin’s Russian Hacker – Readers, Leakers#Tracked

March 14, 2017

Exclusive analysis by Laurelai Bailey, published by Patribotics this week confirmed that Julian Assange and Wikileaks obtained two new servers in Russia just one week before the hacked Podesta emails were released.
Laurelai reported that the ultimate registrant of the servers was one Peter Chayanov, of Russia, a known cyber-criminal and hacker.
Julian Assange has been identified by the US intelligence community as a front for Russian distribution and ‘deniability’ of Russian government-sponsored hacking. Today, however, as a result of our reporting on the dox by Op Ferguson, that link is far clearer.
The internet is tightly controlled in Russia. Cyber criminals have to answer to Putin. Mr. Chayanov is the head of a firm called Hostkey, which hosts mail spammers and other malware and hacking tools, despite offering web space to Wikileaks. Wikileaks chose to use a Russian hacker to host their site – and they knew that he was connected to Vladimir Putin and operated with the blessing of Putin’s government.
Putin and Assange are thus already linked.
But it is much worse for Wikileaks – and the internet in general – even than it looks. In order not to bury the lead I will report what appears to be the conclusions of the web developers and hackers on Twitter discussing Laurelai’s story, and then report on how they appeared to have arrived there.
* Wikileaks has handed Chayanov access to everything stored on its site and servers
* The Russian hacker and spammer can ‘monitor traffic’
* He can tell who is reading anything on the Wikileaks site anywhere in the world
* The Russian hacker has access to all documents that have been sent to Wikileaks
* He can probably bust the anonymity of any computer or user who thought they were anonymously donating to Wikileaks
* It is not reasonable to suggest that this hacker is other than linked with Russia’s GRU – if he has it, they have it
* Through Julian Assange and his website, it appears that the Russian hacker and his government can track any readers of the Wikileaks site and any donors of material to it, thus allowing Russia to ‘blackmail’ anyone who ‘sent secrets’ to Wikileaks as a ‘whistleblower’.
I will update this story later in the day summarizing discussions among the hacker and developer community on Twitter that led to this bombshell conclusion.
All of the above appear to be factual statements. It is not a fact that Russia did indeed monitor web traffic to Wikileaks, but it seems to be an absolute fact that if they want to, they can – and it seems, from the reaction of Mr. Chayanov upon being outed, almost totally certain that Julian Assange handed Russia the keys to the Wikileaks site deliberately.
When Julian Assange wrote “Wikileak the Government” he apparently meant “Wikileaks is the Government (of Russia)”.
A subsequent post will explore the further possibility that Peter Chayanov is also Guccifer2 – providing the materials that hacked the US election, as well as helping Assange and Wikileaks work with Putin to do so.

Yahoo hackers spied on Russian journalists, US financial types, 14 employees of a Bitcoin firm, and a "Nevada gaming official.'

These hackers also went after Moscow officials—at the Russian Federation and in the 'Ministry of Internal Affairs.'

Not to mention employees at Russian cybersecurity and financial firms.

In other words the hackers weaponized Yahoo's data to attack a host of domestic & foreign, criminal & intel targets.

NOW we come full circle......

The two Russian intelligence agents were identified as Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin, both of whom work for the FSB, the Russian spy agency successor to the KGB.

Dokuchaev was described as an officer in the FSB Center for Information Security, known as “Center 18”, which is supposed to investigate hacking.

According to the Washington Post, which first reported news of the charges, he began working for the agency to avoid prosecution for credit card fraud.

Dokuchaev was one of two FSB agents arrested in December, according to Russian news agencies, and charged with treason over alleged cooperation with the CIA.

BLUF with today's DoJ reveal: FSB "cybersecurity" is cover for a global online organized crime wave of unprecedented magnitude & severity.

Russia has been a kleptocracy since the collapse of the USSR, if not before, but the Internet now gives them the tools to conduct massive criminal activity globally. Thiw activity can support economic and political goals simultaneously. Once we recognize this as a threat to our national security interests the next question is do we have the tools and policy to deal with it? This is a separate yet related issue tied to their massive disinformation efforts. Again, we don't seem to have the tools or policy to mitigate it's effects, which in short is creating their version of color revolutions, but to create populist governments that are arguably drifting toward fascism. In other words a grand scheme to get more countries aligned with Russia ideologically.

Bill...fully agree ....if you notice my comments early on Crimea and Ukraine.....Russian here I mean Putin...Russian power decision making rests on a four legged stool concept and how Putin balances those legs.......

1. Russian Orthodox Church which has been delivering the ideological drive on what is "Russia"
2. Russian oligarchs who supply the black money cut-outs and deniability
3. Russia intelligence services and related Ministry of Interior police AND lately Russian Private Military Companies (PMCs)
4. Russian mafia which also allows for cut-outs and deniability

Their internet activities also reflect this composition as well...whether from disinformation to propaganda to fake news to criminal activities to now formal Russian state sponsored hacking attacks....

Reference populist movements whether the US with Trump/Bannon and Miller...or Holland with Wilders or France with Le Pen or the AfD here in Germany really attempt to create fear and distrust by those that really are basically afraid of the following three things....

1. fear of getting sick
2. fear of getting old
3. fear of losing a job

COUPLED now with the attempt to blame someone other than themselves...NAMELY immigrants...foreigners...someone other than being white...

Why do I say blame others rather than themselves...because this group of voters seems to rather take cliches...slogans and rhetoric over the truth...meaning years ago they basically stopped being active within the concept of politics..stopped voting and dropped out...until someone comes along and places a verbal voice to their discontentment...and then suddenly they are energized again but in the wrong direction and rely on social media and right wing blogsites and are open to anything resembling a conspiracy theory IE "Deep State"....as it matches their own biases..thus they do not need "facts" or "truth".....

What is amazing to me is the simple fact that those that voted for Trump for whatever reason now are actually seeing that that hated ObamaCare WHICH they are on and or Medicaid for the first time is going to be taken away from them and they say..."but that is not what you said you would do"...or coal miners where Trump promised them their jobs back BUT is then cutting the Obamacare Black Lung medical coverage and disability pensions...

Which ignores the simple fact that yes Trump has lied so many times yet they still believe him because he is not "a politician"...and he is this perceived great "businessman" AND forgot his 650M USD debt load has to be paid by someone and SEVEN bankruptcies....

Actually I have been massively impressed with the Russia disinformation and propaganda campaign waged against the US...just as equally as good as their hacking...AND that is far more dangerous...

They have played the Trump supporters like a violin...just as Wilders has attempted to and as is Le Pen doing right now...here in Germany the AfD has been actually hurt by Trump and Brexit as their polling numbers which lay around 12-14% are now in the 7-8% range and still sinking.

BUT what is really interesting is that the general European public has seen the coming Brexit disaster and Trump front close and personal and has decided that the EU is not so bad after all...

In the Dutch vote....it took Erdogan and a stiff resistance by the government to him to finally wake the Dutch up to the facts that their economy is booming....society as a whole is doing actually well...and unemployment is sinking weekly to low levels not seen since 1975....AND were they willing to balance that against a railing fascist neo Nazi who wanted to throw everything overboard.....with no guarantee that things would be even better.

'The senator from Kentucky is now working for Putin': John McCain slams Rand Paul for blocking Montenegro from joining NATO

Natasha Bertrand, Business Insider

Republican Sen. John McCain slammed his GOP colleague, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, on Wednesday after Paul blocked the passage of a treaty that would allow Montenegro to move forward with joining NATO, Defense News'#Joe Gould reported.
McCain warned before the vote that “If there’s objection, you are achieving the objectives of Vladimir Putin...and I do not say that lightly.”
Paul then entered the Senate chamber, voted against the accession protocol,#and exited.#
“The only conclusion you can draw when he walks away is he has no argument to be made,” McCain said after Paul walked out abruptly, according to The Washington Examiner. "The senator from Kentucky is now working for Vladimir Putin."
Russian President Vladimir Putin is staunchly opposed to Montengro's accession to NATO, which he views as a threat to Russian sovereignty.#Albania and Croatia joined the alliance 2009.
"Senator McCain believes that the person who benefits the most from Congress’s failure to ratify Montenegro’s ascension to NATO is Vladimir Putin, whose government has sought to destroy the NATO alliance, erode confidence in America’s commitments to its allies, overthrow the duly-elected government of Montenegro, and undermine democratic institutions throughout Europe," McCain's spokesperson, Julie Tarallo, told Business Insider on Wednesday.
"The overwhelming majority of senators who support this treaty, and certainly the people of Montenegro, deserved an explanation from Senator Paul on the Senate floor as to why he sought to prevent this small, brave country from joining in the defense of the free world," Tarallo added.
For Montenegro to move forward with the accession process, which was approved in May, the treaty has to be ratified by the US Senate by unanimous consent.#Twenty-one#of 28 NATO allies have already#backed Montenegro's accession.
Asked about McCain's comment, Paul stood by his decision to block the treaty and said it would be#"unwise to expand the monetary and military obligations of the United States given the burden of our $20 trillion debt."
"Currently, the United States has troops in dozens of countries and is actively fighting in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Yemen (with the occasional drone strike in Pakistan)," Paul told Business Insider in a statement provided by#his office.#"In addition, the United States is pledged to defend 28 countries in NATO."
McCain promised#Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic in January#that the Senate would ratify the treaty soon, according to Radio Free Europe.
Markovic was the target of a coup#plot, allegedly orchestrated by Russian intelligence agents, to overthrow Montenegro's pro-NATO government and replace it with a Russia-friendly regime, The New York Times reported. The plot was uncovered in November after the pro-Russian mercenary who helped organize it was arrested by Montenegrin police.

Well worth the entire read.

The Kremlin’s so-called “partners”
Alexander Morozov 16 March 2017
For the Kremlin’s friends in the west, the reality of Russia’s actions is finally sinking in.

Before Crimea, everyone “cooperated with the Russians”. And until mid-2016, no one knew what to think or do with this history of cooperation. Sanctions hardly made a dent in this “cooperation regime”.
But beginning with the US presidential elections, important changes are taking place — and it’s hard to know what to call them or how to describe them. Externally, we see that people who were supposed to communicate with “the Russians” are losing their positions. And this is accompanied by public scandals. It’s not the case that these people cooperated with some questionable goals in mind, but they’d come into contact with a taboo — zashkvar in Russian criminal slang.
No one doubted the loyalty of US national security adviser Michael Flynn, but he resigned because of his “contacts” with the Russians. A few days ago, the vice-speaker of Lithuania’s parliament resigned. Mindaugas Bastys left because the Lithuanian security services refused him access to secret data. But the list of Russian citizens whom Bastys had contact with over the years doesn’t contain anything particularly shocking — representatives of Russian state corporations in Lithuania, the usual suspicious Russian businessmen and so on.
The recent hack of the email account of hitherto unknown Alexander Usovsky, who was working for the Kremlin in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Balkans, shows that Konstantin Malofeev, an Orthodox Russian businessman known for financing separatists in the Donbas, discussed or in fact conducted operations against elections in Bosnia and Poland.

October 2014: Alexander Usovsky discusses leaking an image of Milorad Dodik, pro-Russian president of Republika Srpska, meeting with Konstantin Malofeev. Source: bellingcat.
Malofeev’s activities are an extreme example of Russia’s openly subversive actions in other states. But when you look at Usovsky’s emails, and you’re aware of the state Russian affairs in Europe, you realise#that Malofeev’s strategy and tactics are no different from the actions of dozens and hundreds of similar actors beyond Russia’s borders. Before Crimea, for those who cooperated with the “Russians”, these activities looked like “supporting Russia’s interests”. Now these people are beginning to figure out what this really meant.
“What have we got ourselves involved in?” they asked themselves — people who’d performed one-off services or participated in “Petersburg Dialogue” (a German-Russian public form), the Valdai Club, the “Dialogue of Civilisations” (another public forum) and the dozens of other programmes where Russian money was involved.
All these political, cultural and media contacts are nothing compared to the scale of cooperation in business
Members of Russian émigré organisations (which refused to work with the “Russian world” programme fairly early on) have told me that, at the start, they were taken in by film director Nikita Mikhalkov’s initial cultural projects. They sincerely supported the director’s appeal to Russians abroad.
But around 2008 these émigré organisations felt that they were beginning to be recruited into an ideological support campaign for the Kremlin. Many people continued travelling to Moscow for émigré congresses, but already as “observers”. They already decided back then that this was the “New Comintern” and it was wrong to accept their grants. Other people continued to accept the money happily, and sailed off together with the Kremlin in the direction of Crimea.
Money talks
But all these political, cultural and media contacts are nothing compared to the scale of cooperation in business.
For more than a decade, millions of people across the world have been involved in networks of “Russian money”. After all, the large-scale capital flow out of Russia, the partial reinvestment of these funds back into the country through offshore structures and into infrastructure outside of Russia (companies, shares, property, yachts and so on) – this is the gigantic money-moving machine of Putin’s corporate state, which is operated by millions of people (solicitors, politicians, parliamentary deputies, cultural professionals, translators and so on).

March 2014, Crimea. CC BY-2.0 Sasha Maksymenko / Flickr. Some rights reserved.
As a result, by the time Crimea happened, the Kremlin had a significant lobby at its disposal. This doesn’t mean that people were actually “bought” (to use the language of anti-corruption). People merely “cooperated” and received certain bonuses for this cooperation. If you once took money from an old friend in your past, then, even if you see it in a critical light now, you’ll still maintain your loyalty to him or her in public. Who would want to start a scandal about the misdeeds of someone who once helped, let’s say, to finance your new home? You’d keep quiet.
The retrospective starts now
In other words, for over a decade — since roughly 2004, after Khodorkovsky’s Yukos company was seized — the Russian economy kept its (hard to measure) foreign networks well-oiled.
This wasn’t about corruption in the narrow sense. Of course, in the west, this was seen as economic interaction with a particular kind of “eastern” economy, where everything is accompanied by “signs of gratitude”, “kickbacks”, exchange of various bonuses and preferences, trips to the sauna, hunting expeditions with helicopters and so on. And this wasn’t criminal activity as such. It was seen as part of the “specifics” of dealing with the country. Russia is far from the only economy that operates this way — i.e. through “partnership”. The world’s largest companies opened offices and factories in Russia. And until recently, this was a privileged economy incorporated into the BRICS system.
Putin used Crimea to draw people who’d been involved in partnership into a one-off mobilisation. The Russian president made it necessary for all these “partners” to define their position
Crimea turned the results of this ten-year-long support into a problem. Obviously, Putin used Crimea to draw people who’d been involved in partnership into a one-off mobilisation. The Russian president made it necessary for all these “partners” to define their position. Putin’s “partners” (he often pronounces the word with irony) are often understood in the diplomatic context. But in reality Putin has other “partners” in mind — those millions of people who have for years sat on Russian contracts, Russian money and other forms of interaction with “the Russians”.
Unreliable partners
Now these “partners” have big problems. And I note sadly that their problems are not due to Crimea (as such), the sanctions or counter-sanctions regimes, nor the ambiguity of past participation in toxic projects with “the Russians”. The problem for them is that Putin does not want to stop.
This community would have sighed with relief if Putin had just “signed over the assets to his name”, i.e. taken Crimea and stopped there. But the extreme ambiguity that characterised 2014-2017 continues to be maintained and even expanded: it wasn’t Putin who shot down MH17, but some people working for Konstantin Malofeev; Putin didn’t murder Boris Nemtsov, it was a few Chechen security officers; it wasn’t Putin who hacked the US Democratic Party’s servers, but some hackers — possibly Russian, possibly not (but from Russian servers); Putin didn’t organise the coup attempt in Montenegro, but some unknown individuals; it wasn’t Putin who organised the campaign to destabilise and destroy Ukraine as a state, but Russian presidential adviser Sergei Glazyev; it was some guy named Alexander Usovsky who organised pro-Russian demonstrations in European states (with cash from patriotic Russian businessmen), not Putin. And so on.#
Now everyone is looking back on this time and asking themselves: who were really “partnering” with? Maybe it was Russian intelligence?
This list is growing by the day. And yet the Kremlin is not distancing itself from any of this with the previous energy so understandable to its so-called “partners”. The Kremlin doesn’t conduct investigations into any of these issues, but an ambiguous game that can be clearly read as “covering” all of its “own people”.
Thus, the previous decade of developing relationships transforms before our eyes into an “invitation to complicity”. Now everyone is looking back on this time and asking themselves: who were really “partnering” with? Maybe it was Russian intelligence? Or maybe from the very beginning this was just a trick to recruit us for dubious lobbying campaign?
Ambiguity rules
This is all scarily new. Everything that’s happening before our eyes regarding the US State Department and pro-Russian politicians in Europe reveals a complex problem — the borders between lobbying, partnership, espionage, propaganda influence and corruption are being washed out.
Thus a situation arises whereby it is impossible to distinguish between real partnership from participation in a campaign to distort “the borders of the permissible”. Just yesterday you were a “Christian Democrat” developing a partnership with the Russian Federation, and today you’re just a silent participant in the degradation of the very norms of European political culture.”

Continued...

Three years ago, I wrote that Putin was in the process of creating a rightwing Comintern. It’s since become known as the “black Comintern”. But now I think that the current situation is not only more complex, but worse. .

Outlaw,

I don't disagree that it is a risk, and while it won't parallel Nazi Germany, it will still present a threat to democracy. However, that will only happen if our judicial and legislative branches fail to check the executive branch.

I find it odd that after two years of attacking Obama, you are now championing him? As for Trump conning blind people to vote for him, that was hardly the case for the majority. Most who voted in that direction wasn't for Trump, but against Clinton, a known liar, and an advocate of failed policies. What is really sad is that the Democrats and Republicans didn't put forth better candidates.

Russia is in the midst of a massive anti-corruption drive to stamp out institutionalised stealing that has already costs the country some 5% of GDP, but has caused little comment. The robbers have until recently gotten away with their crimes with impunity and many of them are to be found living openly in luxury in London. But the crackdown is gathering momentum and starting to affect the Russian elites. Above all, the campaign is targeting Russia’s deeply corrupt banking sector.
The state has been nervous about closing banks, afraid of sparking a financial crisis. But bank owners have been blithely stealing from their depositors. When the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) finally gets round to shuttering a dodgy bank it typically finds at least a $1bn hole in the balance sheet and the owners long gone. As the first RUB1.4mn ($23,555) of deposits are covered by an insurance scheme the clean-up has already cost the government about $50bn, with approximately 200 more banks to close over the next two years. Last year alone, the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA) that is responsible for the reform launched 236 criminal cases against banks and won 25 of them.#

Bill..after two solid years of bashing the lack of any strategic strategy on the part of Obama I have not changed that stance in the least....

Right now the US does not have an effective DoS and or SoS who has been basically sidelined by Bannon/Kushner/Preibus...has now a budget that "deconstructs" using Bannon's on words EPA....FEMA...CG and the list does not end....

When we accept as a public the words from a white nationalist who states he is a Leninist and wants to destroy the "establishment" and then changes that to "deconstruction" we are in serious trouble.

When the majority of Trump voters refuse to accept the evening news or read MSM in favor of an right wing white nationalist/white supremacist echo chamber on social media and the internet then we really are in serious trouble.....

When truth and facts become "alternative facts" we are in serious trouble....

When people applaud when Trump states a blatant lie that a former President illegal wiretapped him and then refuses to apologize and openly admit he basically lied we are in serious trouble....

WHEN one party blocks completely any government movement for eight long years because they did not like a black man winning AND then selling it as being the fault of the other political party then we have a serious problem.....

WHEN we have conspiracy myths ruling over fact and truth then we are in serious trouble....

When a President refuses to accept the simple principle that Russian hackers were hard at work and turns around and then praises that same nation state...then we have a serious problem....

When a President openly states "we will have everyone covered by healthcare and it will be a beautiful thing"...and then the reality is 24M will lose it in 2026 then we are in serious trouble.....

When a President talks about progress BUT really only provides "motion" and sells it as a success with people applauding himl AND no one challenges him on it..we are in serious trouble....

AND especially when a US President deliberately and openly attacks the rule of law...IE the judiciary then we are in serious trouble...

WHEN fewer and fewer Americans actually vote allowing a minority President full and complete control of government we are in serious trouble...minority meaning he got fewer general votes by 3M yet "won"....

WHEN the US President is willing to take the US into a possible trade war that will hurt the US and the global trading nations then we have a serious problem...

YES we are sliding and sliding badly into an interesting form of fascism...one condoned in fact by democracy......

I will stand by that statement...as we will see more of it in the coming months....

But then, at the end of the 29-page dissenting opinion, Bybee, joined by Judges Alex Kozinski, Consuelo M. Callahan, Carlos T. Bea and Sandra S. Ikuta, wrote an unusual aside, saying he wished “to comment on the public discourse that has surrounded these proceedings …” He went on:

Even as I dissent from our decision not to vacate the panel’s flawed opinion, I have the greatest respect for my colleagues. The personal attacks on the distinguished district judge and our colleagues were out of bounds of civic and persuasive discourse — particularly when they came from the parties.

It does no credit to the arguments of the parties to impugn the motives or the competence of the members of this court; ad hominem attacks are not a substitute for effective advocacy. Such personal attacks treat the court as though it were merely a political forum in which bargaining, compromise and even intimidation are acceptable principles. The courts of law must be more than that, or we are not governed by law at all.”

Coming from Bybee, the statement had particular significance. He was head of the Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice under President George W. Bush and signed the so-called “Torture Memos” in 2002 permitting “enhanced interrogation” techniques on detainees.
Another 9th Circuit judge, this one concurring with the majority’s refusal to rehear the case, appeared to be referencing Trump as well. “I am proud to be a part of this court and a judicial system that is independent and courageous,” wrote Judge Stephen Reinhardt, “and that vigorously protects the constitutional rights of all, regardless of the source of any efforts to weaken or diminish them.”

Not clearly known who is behind this....

http://freebeacon.com/national-security/hack-attack-cell-phone-data-dc/amp/

Suspected Hack Attack Snagging Cell Phone Data Across D.C.

An unusual amount of highly suspicious cellphone activity in the Washington, D.C., region is fueling concerns that a rogue entity is surveying#the communications of numerous individuals, likely including U.S. government officials and foreign diplomats, according to documents viewed by the Washington Free Beacon and conversations with security insiders.
A large spike in suspicious activity on a major U.S. cellular carrier has raised red flags in the Department of Homeland Security and prompted concerns that cellphones in the region are being tracked. Such activity could allow pernicious actors to clone devices and other mobile equipment used by civilians and government insiders, according to information obtained by the Free Beacon.
It remains unclear who is behind the attacks, but the sophistication and amount of time indicates it could be a foreign nation, sources said.
Mass amounts of location data appear to have been siphoned off by a third party who may have control of entire cell phone towers in the area, according to information obtained by the Free Beacon. This information was compiled by a program that monitors cell towers for anomalies#supported by DHS and ESD America and known as ESD Overwatch.
Cell phone information gathered by the program shows major anomalies in the D.C.-area indicating that a third-party is tracking en-masse a large number of cellphones. Such a tactic could be used to clone phones, introduce malware to facilitate spying, and track government phones being used by officials in the area.
"The attack was first seen in D.C. but was later seen on other sensors across the USA," according to one source familiar with the situation. "A sensor located close to the White House and another over near the Pentagon have been part of those that have seen this tracking."
The data gathered by the ESD Overwatch program indicates the U.S. cell carrier has experienced "unlawful access to their network for the purpose of large scale subscriber tracking," according to a report prepared by ESD Overwatch, a contractor working on behalf of DHS, and viewed by the Free Beacon.
Information gathered by the program shows a massive uptick in efforts to identify and track cellphones. The third-party hacker appears to be identifying phones as they connect with local cellphone towers and recording this information.
This method of hacking could permit a malicious actor to track an individual's cellphone and pinpoint phones that may be of importance, such as government entities.
The cellular network involved in the attack is being abused in order to track phones subscribed to the carrier, according to one source familiar with the situation.
DHS's Office of Public Affairs confirmed that the ESD Overwatch program has been operating under a 90-day pilot program that began Jan. 18.#Before the surveillance program was initiated the federal government did not have a method to detect intrusions of the nature seen over the past several months.
The attack on this network is still underway, according to sources monitoring the situation.
An official with ESD Overwatch acknowledged the existence of the DHS program, but would not comment further on the matter.
The issue of cellphone vulnerabilities has been a top concern in Congress, where lawmakers petitioned DHS on Wednesday to outline steps the government is taking to prevent foreign governments from performing the type of attacks observed by Overwatch.
"For several years, cyber security experts have repeatedly warned that U.S. cellular communications networks are vulnerable to surveillance by foreign governments, hackers, and criminals exploiting vulnerabilities in Signaling System 7," which is used by cellular phones and text messaging applications, according to a letter set by Sen. Ron Wyden#(D., Ore.) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D., Calif.).
"U.S. cellular phones can be tracked, tapped, and hacked—by adversaries thousands of miles away—through SS7-enabled surveillance," the lawmakers write. "We are deeply concerned that the security of America’s telecommunications infrastructure is not getting the attention it deserves."
"We suspect that most Americans simply have no idea how easy it is for a relatively sophisticated adversary to track their movements, tap their calls, and hack their smartphones," the lawmakers write.
Concerns continue to mount that the government is not adequately taking steps to secure cellular networks.
The lawmakers request that DHS outline specific steps being taken to insulate networks from attacks and ensure that U.S. cell carriers are doing the same.

Security professionals are fond of saying that any#system is only as secure as its weakest link. It would not be at all surprising if Baratov was the weakest link in this conspiracy chain.
A look at Mr. Baratov’s Facebook and Instagram photos indicates he is heavily into high-performance sports cars. His profile picture shows two of his prized cars — a Mercedes#and an Aston Martin — parked in the driveway of his single-family home in Ontario.
A simple reverse WHOIS search at domaintools.com on the name Karim Baratov turns up 81 domains registered to someone by this name in Ontario. Many of those domains include the names of big email providers like Google and Yandex, such as accounts-google[dot]net and www-yandex[dot]com.
Other domains appear to be Web sites selling email hacking services. One of those is a domain registered to Baratov’s home address in Ancaster, Ontario called infotech-team[dot]com. A cached copy of that site from archive.org shows this once was a service that offered “quality mail hacking to order, without changing the password.” The service charged roughly $60 per password.

Archive.org’s cache of infotech-team.com, an email hacking service registered to Baratov.
The proprietors of Infotech-team[dot]com advertise the ability to steal email account passwords without actually changing the victim’s password.#According to the Justice Department, Baratov’s service relied on “spear phishing” emails that targeted individuals with custom content and enticed the recipient into clicking a link.
Antimail[dot]org is another domain registered to Baratov that was active between 2013 and 2015. It advertises “quality-mail hacking to order!”:

Another email hacking business#registered to Baratov#is xssmail[dot]com, which also has for several years advertised the ability to break into email accounts of virtually all of the major Webmail providers. XSS is short for “cross-site-scripting.” XSS attacks rely on vulnerabilities#in Web sites that don’t properly parse data submitted by visitors in things like search forms or anyplace one might enter data on a Web site.
In the context of phishing links, the user clicks the link and is actually taken to the domain he or she thinks she is visiting (e.g., yahoo.com) but the vulnerability allows the attacker to inject malicious code into the page that the victim is visiting.
This can include fake login prompts that send any data the victim submits directly to the attacker. Alternatively, it could allow the attacker to steal “cookies,” text files that many sites place on visitors’ computers to validate#whether they have visited the site previously, as well as if they have authenticated to the site already.

Archive.org’s cache of xssmail.com
Perhaps instead of or in addition to using XSS attacks in targeted phishing emails, Baratov also knew about or had access to other cookie-stealing exploits collected by another accused in today’s indictments: Russian national Alexsey Alexseyevich Belan.
According to government investigators, Belan has been on the FBI’s Cyber Most Wanted list since 2013 after breaking into and stealing credit card data from a number of e-commerce companies. In June 2013, Belan was arrested in a European country on request from the United States, but the FBI says he was able to escape to Russia before he could be extradited to the U.S.

According to the Justice Department, some victim accounts that Dokuchaev and Sushchin asked Belan and Baratov to hack were of predictable interest to the FSB (a foreign intelligence and law enforcement service), such as personal accounts belonging to Russian journalists; Russian and U.S. government officials; employees of a prominent Russian cybersecurity company; and numerous employees of other providers whose networks the conspirators sought to exploit. Other personal accounts belonged to employees of commercial entities, such as a Russian investment banking firm, a French transportation company, U.S. financial services and private equity firms, a Swiss bitcoin wallet and banking firm and a U.S. airline.
“During the conspiracy, the FSB officers facilitated Belan’s other criminal activities, by providing him with sensitive FSB law enforcement and intelligence information that would have helped him avoid detection by U.S. and other law enforcement agencies outside Russia, including information regarding FSB investigations of computer hacking and FSB techniques for identifying criminal hackers,” the Justice Department charged in its press statement about the indictments.
“Additionally, while working with his FSB conspirators to compromise Yahoo’s network and its users, Belan used his access to steal financial information such as gift card and credit card numbers from webmail accounts; to gain access to more than 30 million accounts whose contacts were then stolen to facilitate a spam campaign; and to earn commissions from fraudulently redirecting a subset of Yahoo’s search engine traffic,” the government alleges.

What is extremely interesting and not covered by the FBI's statements is the fact that in 2015 an Italian IT security software company which sold Lawful interception software and tools was hacked...hackers are still not known AND over 400Gs of data stolen and then uploaded to the net for analysis....

This Italian company had sold a large number of hacking tools, lawful interception tools and other various software tools to a number of Russians and Russian companies...

Part of the hack included all records of their sales...a lot of these sales were illegal under EU regulations which limits the export of EU developed lawful interception tools....

Where it gets interesting is a number of items around fake and real MS security certifications and the use of Cookie now appear to have been used by the Russians against Yahoo......so did the technology concept come from first from the Italian company or the Russian FSB???

Italy’s Hacking Team gets hacked
Unknown hackers have posted a torrent file-sharing link to more than 400GB of Hacking Team data, including source code, internal documents and emails that could reveal the identity of customers

He never defined during the interview nor was he challenged on the "from people who would know"....

This was repeated during the RT interview as well.....

THEN again on FOX News there was a legal pundit a former judge who repeated the UK story ....

Trump also referred to this great legal mind who also repeated the same exact UK spying story BUT this time he himself stated that THREE US intel types had told him....

But he never ever named the three US intel types...

THEN during a daily WH press conference Spicer read a report taken from FOX News repeating the same exact

Spicer on GCHQ allegations: "I don't think we regret anything"

THEN at the Merkel press conference Trump literally told the reporter to go "ask Fox News" about the false accusation made yesterday of British spying...

EVEN in the face of being told by the UK that in fact he was spreading "fake news" and basically lying..... Spicer kept repeating the UK myth.

BUT THEN even FOX starts backpedaling..........

FOX just said it CAN'T confirm its analyst's claim

So we see a Russian pushed conspiracy myth get started on Russia Today a propaganda media outlet...makes it then to Twitter...then makes it to FOX News and then gets picked up by the Trump WH....then FOX bails on it being the truth BUT the WH still stands by it....

Sen. Rand Paul: Whoever leaked transcript of former NSA Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian ambassador should "go to jail" #ThisWeek

Funny how three years ago @RandPaul described #Snowden's actions as »noble«

Listen to exactly what he was saying THREE years ago and then balance it against today's comments....

So in fact when conversing with a Russian source that you have lied about even contacting is not an "illegal leak"...BUT Flynn supposedly held a TS/SCI which requires one to inform your SSO if anything changes on your SF86....especially under "foreign contacts"...

BUT WAIT...Republican disinformation is often as good as Russian at attempting to deflect....

Suddenly there is no more accusations of wire tapping and now a full scale attack on those that leaked information on Flynn....

Nunes said on "Fox News Sunday" that leaks to reporters about former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn were criminal and that his panel was probing whether other names were leaked

AGAIN using FOX as the distribution point...

NSA documents prove SURVEILLANCE of TRUMP and his FAMILY https://www.infowars.com/nsa-documents-prove-surveillance-on-donald-trump-and-alex-jones/#… breaking now -

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Infowars.com have obtained credible information from law enforcement sources regarding individual records of U.S. citizens under National Security Agency (NSA) electronic surveillance in the years 2004 through 2010 – a database that suggests both Donald J. Trump and Alex Jones were under illegal, unauthorized government monitoring during those years.

Michael Zullo, formerly the commander and chief investigator of the Cold Case Posse (CCP), a special investigative group created in 2006 in the office of Joseph M. Arpaio, formerly the sheriff in Maricopa County, an Arizona State Certified Law Enforcement Agency, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, provided sections of the database to Infowars.com.

The electronic surveillance database, provided to Zullo by a whistleblower in 2013, was apparently created by the NSA as part of the NSA’s illegal and unconstitutional Project Dragnet electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens, first revealed by news reports published in 2005, as further documented by the revelations of whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013.
Sheriff Arpaio and Chief Investigator Zullo have identified dozens of entries at various addresses, including both Trump Tower in New York City and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, under which Donald Trump was apparently under NSA electronic surveillance from 2004, during President George W. Bush’s term of office, through 2009, the first year of President Obama’s presidency.

Interesting that this comes from the Russian CB...

Common thing is the skimmer technique...but this seems to be far different...

The article talks about the ability to place a virus into the RAM operating the ATM...that does not delete itself out after a reboot...what the virus does is allows one to punch in a specific code and the ATM will then dispense all large value bills that are in the ATM money cassette....ATM does not report the loss as no code lines are being used when say someone uses a debt card...

Normal virus detectors do not pick up this so called RAM virus....

Most viruses no longer use RAM because a reboot would delete them thus is interesting that there is potentially a RAM virus that does not delete with a reboot....

Russian techie says the FBI still hasn’t called, and now he’s back in the news

WASHINGTON

A young techie from western Siberia was only a bit player in the Russian hacking scandal roiling U.S. politics, when a powerful friend began applauding Kremlin actions to root out alleged traitors.
Now, Vladimir Fomenko has emerged as a more significant figure as the FBI examines connections between Donald Trump and a Russian campaign, possibly directed or supported by the Kremlin, to influence the 2016 presidential election.
Fomenko first made news last fall during an investigation over Russian meddling in the 2016 election. He says he didn’t know that clients routed their hacking attempts on state voting systems in Arizona and Illinois through his Bay Area servers. Those events are part of what the FBI confirmed this week is a formal investigation into Russian interference in the election and whether Trump associates were involved.
But it turns out that Fomenko is friends with a Russian internet tycoon who applauded the recent arrests of intelligence agents in a cybersecurity unit of Russia’s Federal Security Service on treason charges and who believes Russia has done too little to defend itself from charges that it harbors rogue hackers.
The political scandal in Washington and treason investigation in Moscow have pulled Fomenko, who operates from a base in Biysk, a small city in western Siberia, closer to center stage.
Registration websites show that Fomenko, while still in his teens, started a company called King Servers in November 2008. Media reports from Russia last year put his age at 26, indicating he founded his company when he was only 17 or 18.
It was an FBI amber alert on Aug. 18 that exposed the young Russian’s company. The alert listed internet identifier numbers, known as IP addresses, that were used in conducting hacking attacks in Arizona and Illinois. A Virginia cybersecurity company, ThreatConnect, said in a Sept. 2 report that six of the eight IP addresses in the FBI report belonged to Fomenko’s King Servers, suggesting “that the individuals behind the activity identified in the FBI report are Russian.”
In a months-long email dialogue with McClatchy reporters, Fomenko answered many questions, avoided many others and often played a cat-and-mouse game of revealing some information but holding back.
He insisted throughout that no U.S. investigators had contacted him.
When asked, Fomenko seemed to know important details about the now-famous intelligence dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, who was hired to look into Russian influence among Trump’s inner circle. The dossier asserted that the Russian government used its notoriously corrupt pension system to make payments to hackers.
Unfortunately, I can’t give you any more details.
Vladimir Fomenko, chief executive of King Servers
“A web money application was used, not bitcoins. Unfortunately, I can’t give you any more details,” he told McClatchy, repeating that in the form of a question. “How come the payment was not done by bitcoin, because bitcoin can’t be traced?”
The U.S. election investigation has led to arrests in Russia. In late January, Russia lodged treason charges against two intelligence officers in the cyber unit of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the KGB. Russian media reported that one of the two was believed to be feeding information that led U.S. intelligence agencies to say with “high confidence” in a declassified Jan. 6 report that Russia had attempted to sway the election in Trump’s favor.
Fomenko is Facebook friends with Russian internet tycoon, Pavel Vrublevsky, who publicly accused one of the FSB officers of leaking Russian hacking capabilities to the CIA before any trial has taken place. Vrublevsky founded an online payment company, Chronopay, and recently served a jail term for ordering a hacking attack on a competitor. One of the implicated FSB officers helped put him in jail. On the King Servers webpage, Fomenko’s company thanks Chronopay for its help.
In an email, Vrublevsky denied media reports that he had a business relationship with Fomenko, saying that he knew the Biysk entrepreneur casually and “we resumed talking a few years ago (on) Facebook.” He said he spoke by phone with Fomenko after the FBI alert, and the two shared the opinion that Russia’s image needed to be defended more forcefully.
Russian criminal meddling in U.S. affairs has taken on a new dimension this month with Comey’s testimony on Monday and a Justice Department indictment filed March 15 against two Russian intelligence officers for a massive breach of Yahoo. The indictment said the FSB commonly uses criminal hackers to conduct penetrations abroad.
An FBI spokesman said the bureau had no comment on whether Fomenko is under scrutiny as part of that investigation. The FBI is also looking at whether Russia used robotic networks to promote fake news about the campaign in favor of Trump.
Fomenko doesn’t look the part of a man of global intrigue. His Facebook page shows photos of a baby-faced millenial in front of an Apple laptop, wearing a gray hoodie, and looking at the camera, a tattoo of a mythic creature occupying much of the side of his neck. The page says he attended a high school in Kirovograd, Ukraine, and university in Aktobe, Kazakhstan. His Facebook friends are mostly young Russian millennials and a smattering of Western reporters.
From his base in western Siberia, Fomenko extended his business to the Netherlands and the United States. On its website, King Servers lists server space for sale in Fremont, Calif., and at the Serverius Data Center outside Amsterdam. There, it offers customers “placement and provision of undisturbed operation of network equipment.”
McClatchy obtained company formation documents from the Netherlands, where King Servers B.V. was incorporated on May 12, 2016. This was a month before numerous attempts to penetrate U.S. voting systems.
The company was registered by Nataliia Lysenko, a Ukrainian bookkeeper who works in the Dutch town of Leiden. Efforts to reach her failed.
The company formation documents also list a Ukrainian national, 27-year-old Pavlo Victorovych Zinkovskyi, as a 50-50 equity partner with Fomenko. Zinkovskyi has no apparent Internet footprint and could not be reached for comment.
Records obtained by McClatchy show that Zinkovskyi traveled to the United States in 2015. He arrived in New York on Oct. 15, 2015, and overstayed his visa by a month, leaving Los Angeles on May 6, 2016, 10 days before the company incorporated in the Netherlands.
Asked for details about his overseas operations and his partner, Fomenko said he was breaking off contact.
From now on I refuse to respond.
Vladimir Fomenko, a Russian high-tech entrepreneur
“From now on I refuse to respond. Your questions remind me of The New York Times. And yes, nobody (from law enforcement) contacted us. We are an international company registered in Europe,” he said Tuesday.
A day later, Fomenko said he had never been to the United States and added “we are planning further development of our business in the region.” The New York Times interviewed Fomenko last September in his Siberian hometown.
Fomenko told McClatchy that the article and the notoriety that followed had been good for business.
“Actually, we are more recognizable now, and everybody sees that this is just a media-created story,” said Fomenko, then offering another tidbit of information. “If we didn’t get in touch with The New York Times ourselves after we saw the FBI report, nobody would have known about us.”
An undated statement on the King Servers website addresses the issue of the U.S. hacking. It said the clients who rented the IP addresses from which the hacking occurred still owe the company $290. It did not identify them, saying only that the clients used “fabricated personal and identification data” to rent two servers, and that the servers had been shut down.
It went on to rebut any involvement of Russian security services in the hack, and said an analysis of the servers showed activity came from Sweden, Norway and Italy.
The statement said the firm had maintained log files and correspondence related to the clients, and would provide them to law enforcement, if asked, but that no authorities had contacted the company.
Whether King Servers was an unwitting Russian conduit or part of the plot is unclear. But one cybersecurity expert, Vitali Kremez, a cybercrime intelligence analyst at Flashpoint, a New York City cybersecurity firm, said someone from King Servers, using the alias Die$el, had been active on Russian-language cybercrime forums on the dark web, including on the now-defunct crutop.nu forum.
If nothing else, Fomenko’s history shows the ease with which foreigners – even those from the Siberian taiga – can snatch a share of U.S. internet business.
The U.S. internet is built and operated largely by private companies. Its open nature means that foreigners face virtually no barriers in playing alongside American entrepreneurs.
“At the lowest level, what it takes is a credit card and access to a computer,” said Mike Simon, chief technology officer at Critical Informatics, a Bremerton, Wash., cybersecurity firm.
It’s absolutely possible to set up the business without setting foot here.
Mike Simon, chief technology officer at Critical Informatics
“It’s absolutely possible to set up the business without setting foot here,” Simon added.
Foreign business owners often want to have their websites hosted in the United States to increase consumer confidence. Buyers of goods on the Internet may balk at addresses, for example, that end in .cn (the domain extension for China) or .ru (Russia’s country domain extension).

Albania Forms Commission on Mystery Spy Device

After claims broke in May that police had got hold of a mysterious device that could intercept communications, opposition MPs have won their demand for a parliamentary commission of inquiry.

Albania's parliament on Thursday approved the request of 35 opposition MPs to create a commission of inquiry into the mysterious electronic device “IMSI Catcher”, which some claim has been used to illegally intercept communications. The opposition accuses the Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, and police officials of using the device - given to them by Italian police as part of a training exercise - to intercept the communications of heads of institutions, leaders of parties, businessmen and journalists. The temporary commission will be comprised of 11 members - five MPs from the opposition and six from the ruling majority. In their request, the opposition MPs emphasized that the aim of the commission was to prevent such cases in future and identify those responsible for the misdeed. "We want to obtain knowledge of the full legal documentation used for this device ... to monitor the concrete behaviour and actions of the authorities included in this case, in order to shed light on this scandal," the request of the MPs reads. The prosecution already opened investigations into the case when the affair broke in May, while more information is still being gathered. An official source from the General Prosecution told BIRN that their investigation is continuing. "The prosecutors are waiting for the Italian authorities to reply to some requests for documentation that were made to them," the source told BIRN. When news of the use of “IMSI Catcher” broke in May, both the opposition and President Bujar Nishani accused the authorities of breaching the constitution. The head of Albania's Information Service, SHISH, Visho Ajazi, on May 19 told the parliamentary commission on security that the mysterious device that had entered in the country for police training purposes could pose a risk to national security. But Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri and the police insisted the device was not a piece of wiretapping equipment, although through it, telephone numbers used in a given area could be identified. Tahiri later mocked the opposition allegations, while at the police fair in Tirana on June 7, among the equipment on display was a black box captioned: "Is there a wiretapping device in here???". The Italian police in a letter to Albanian authorities, sent from senior police officer Gianpaolo Zambonini, backed the stand of Minister Tahiri, assuring that the device was not able to intercept communications. "The system is not able to carry out any kind of audio, SMS or data interception," the Italian police letter read.

NOTICE the Italian police basically lied...

An IMSI-catcher (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) is a telephony eavesdropping device used for intercepting mobile phone traffic and tracking movement of mobile phone users. Essentially a "fake" mobile tower acting between the target mobile phone(s) and the service provider's real towers, it is considered a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack.

NOTE....in this is included the Italian surveillance company that was recently hacked in 2016 and over 400G of data stolen and released on the internet....The Hacking Team probably sold the technology to the Italian police....

Optima was a GSM and 3G based IMSI catcher, capable of tracking a phone's location, and intercepting phone calls and SMS messages. But that was years ago: The company likely has developed more advanced features since then. According to a 2015 email included in Italian surveillance company Hacking Team dump, Cellxion may have an IMSI catcher that can inject code using 3G, and in the company's annual report for 2015, Cellxion writes "Thanks to the foresight of planning an upgradeable and flexible platform we are still at the forefront of addressing the technical and operational needs of our customer base."

For the last two years on the Ukrainian and Syrian threads I have been beating this drum....

I have since the release of the Russian military doctrine non linear warfare which is used as the vehicle for Russian political warfare been stating the two key corner stones of that doctrine are...

1. cyber warfare
2. information warfare or what some call the weaponization of information.

The CIA has said it...as well as NATO and EU and now NSA officially states it....

BUT WAIT what is the attitude of our President...Bannon and Miller....they use it via Infowars and Breotbart.com and all the other ultra right
blogsites supported by massive Russian twittier botnets..Russia Today and Sputnik International...as well as roving bands of Russian hacking criminals...AND then claim it does not exist.

AND it is happening in Bulgarian..Moldavia..France..Holland....Germany and UK...

Asked whether the NSA had any inkling that the Kremlin was going to orchestrate the release of hacked Democratic National Committee emails last July, he demurred. “I actually don’t want to talk about that.”
At the same time, he said, what Moscow did was “no strategic surprise.” Rather, “what may have been a tactical surprise was that they would do it the way they did.”

Campaigns of propaganda and disinformation, dating back to the Soviet Union, have long been a staple of the Kremlin’s foreign policy. Now, however, it is making effective use of its hacking prowess to weaponize information and combine it with its influence operations, or what intelligence officials call “active measures.”

“In general, if you’re responding to nation-state actions like that, you have to find out what are the levers that will move the nation-state actors and are you able and willing to pull those levers?” said Ledgett when asked how the United States should respond.

Have seen Russian darknet chatter on this Chinese attack method....

Hackers Using Fake Cellphone Towers to Spread Android Banking Trojan
Wednesday, March 22, 2017
Swati Khandelwal

Chinese Hackers have taken Smishing attack to the next level, using rogue cell phone towers to distribute Android banking malware via spoofed SMS messages.

SMiShing — phishing attacks sent via SMS — is a type of attack wherein fraudsters use number spoofing attack to send convincing bogus messages to trick mobile users into downloading a malware app onto their smartphones or lures victims into giving up sensitive information.

Security researchers at Check Point Software Technologies have uncovered that Chinese hackers are using fake base transceiver stations (BTS towers) to distribute "Swearing Trojan," an Android banking malware that once appeared neutralized after its authors were arrested in a police raid.

This is the first ever reported real-world case in which criminals played smart in such a way that they used BTS — a piece of equipment usually installed on cellular telephone towers — to spread malware.

The phishing SMS, which masquerades itself as the one coming from Chinese telecom service providers China Mobile and China Unicom, contains very convincing text with a link to download malicious Android APK.

Since Google Play Store is blocked in China, the SMS easily tricks users into installing the APK from an untrusted source.
"Using a BTS to send fake messages is quite sophisticated, and the SMS content is very deceptive. The message tricks users into clicking a malicious URL which installs malware," the researchers said in the blog post.
Once installed, the Swearing malware distributes itself by sending automated phishing SMSes to a victim's contacts.

However the maximum range of a BTS antenna may be as low as 10-22 miles, the technique is very successful and sophisticated in targeted attacks.

Discovered last year by Tencent Security researchers, the Swearing Trojan has the capability to steal bank credentials and other sensitive information from victim Android devices and to bypass two-factor authentication by replacing a user's legit SMS app with a malicious version that intercepts incoming SMS messages.

What's more interesting? To avoid detection of any malicious activity, the Swearing trojan doesn't connect to any remote command-and-control (C&C) server. Instead, it uses SMS or emails to send stolen data back to the hackers.
"This provides the malware with good cover for its communications and hinders attempts to trace any malicious activity."
While this particular malware campaign has usually targeted Chinese users, Check Point researchers warned in a blog post that the threat could quickly spread worldwide when adopted by Western malware.

The malware scheme seems to be larger than previously thought, as according to researchers, only 21cn.com email addresses were used in the initial malware campaign, while new attacks used other popular Chinese email service providers, such as 163.com, sina.cn, and qq.com, and Alibaba Cloud and other cloud service hosted email accounts as well.

Check Point also points out the nasty HummingBad malware trojan that was also discovered in the Chinese mobile market, and "turned out to be early birds which continued to spread worldwide" if adopted by western malware.

Another example of Russian intel services using hacking criminals as a "cut out"....

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/03/alleged-vdos-owners-poised-to-stand-trial/#more-38712

Alleged vDOS Owners Poised to Stand Trial
Police in Israel are recommending that the state attorney’s office#indict and prosecute two 18-year-olds suspected of operating vDOS, until recently the most popular attack service#for knocking Web sites offline.
On Sept. 8, 2016, KrebsOnSecurity published a story about the hacking of vDOS, a service that attracted tens of thousands of paying customers and facilitated countless distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks over the four year period it was in business. That story named two young Israelis — Yarden Bidani and Itay Huri — as the likely owners and operators of vDOS, and within hours of its publication the two were arrested by Israeli police, placed on house arrest for 10 days, and forbidden from using the Internet for a month.
After those restrictions came and went, some readers expressed surprise that there were no formal charges announced against either of the young men. This week, however, Israeli police sent letters to lawyers for both men stating that the official investigation was nearing completion and that they planned to urge government prosecutors to pursue criminal charges.
The police are preparing to recommend#prosecutors charge the men with computer fraud and extortion, alleging#they caused more than six million shekels worth of damage (approximately USD $1.65 million).
Bidani’s attorney Perach Aroch told KrebsOnSecurity that her client has not yet been officially charged with any crime. But she said once the investigation is complete the defense will have 30 days to review the evidence and to make arguments as to why the case should be dismissed.
“They have to give us 30 days to see all the evidence and to try to convince them why they should not take this case to court,” Aroch said. “After that, [the prosecutors will] decide if it should go to trial.”
18-year-old Yarden Bidani.
The arrest of Bidani and Huri came after the police received information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). But the United States apparently isn’t the only country weighing in on this case: According to a story published Sunday by Israeli news outlet TheMarker.com, the government of Sweden also is urging Israeli prosecutors to pursue formal charges.
It’s unclear exactly why the Swedish government is so interested in this case, but the vDOS service has been implicated in a series high-profile attacks that#brought down some of the country’s largest news media Web sites last year.
Shortly after those attacks in March 2016, Somerville, Mass.-based security intelligence firm Recorded Future published an analysis linking the assaults against Swedish media sites to vDOS and to “applej4ck,” the hacker nickname allegedly used by Bidani.
In publicizing the news of vDOS’s hack last year, KrebsOnSecurity also published several months of attack logs from the vDOS service. However, those logs only dated back to May 2016.
Itay Huri’s lawyer declined to comment for this story, but TheMarker’s Amitai Ziv obtained a statement from Huri’s attorney, who accused Israeli police of applying pressure and terror through the media instead of looking for the truth.
Ziv said sources he’s spoken to believe the case will almost certainly go to trial.
“Professionals involved in the case said the likelihood of indictments in the affair is very high,” he wrote.
According to Bidani’s lawyer Aroch, the two former friends are now pointing the finger of blame at each other and are no longer speaking to one another.
“They each now accuse each other in things, so it’s a little bit of a problem,” Aroch said.
“They each now accuse each other in things, so it’s a little bit of a problem,” Aroch said.
Aroch said both Bidani and Huri are free to travel and even leave the country, although both men have had their bank and PayPal accounts frozen.
Bidani and Huri allegedly started vDOS when they were 14 years old. By the time the service was shut down last September, it had attracted tens of thousands of customers who paid for attacks in PayPal (when vDOS’s PayPal accounts were shut down, the service briefly shifted to accepting payment via Bitcoin).
My Sept. 2016 investigation into the hacking of vDOS revealed that in just two of the four years the service was in operation, it brought in revenues of more than $600,000.
It’s unclear how many digital sieges#were launched by vDOS, but it was likely several million. The aforementioned user logs stolen from vDOS and leaked to KrebsOnSecurity show that in just the span of less than three months last year the service was responsible for more than 150,000 attacks.
KrebsOnSecurity paid a heavy price for breaking the story on vDOS’s hacking and the subsequent arrest of its alleged proprietors. Less than two weeks after those stories were published in September 2016, this site came under one of the largest DDoS attacks the Internet has ever witnessed.
That series of attacks ultimately knocked this site offline for nearly four days. According to follow-up reporting published in January 2017, the attacks were paid for#by a cybercriminal who was upset and/or inconvenienced by my exposé on vDOS.
Lawyers for Bidani and Huri have said their clients were merely operating a defensive “stresser” service sold to companies that wished to test whether their sites could withstand large cyberattacks. The owners of these stresser services#have sought to hide behind wordy “terms of service” agreements which all customers must agree to, arguing that these agreements#absolve them of any sort of liability for how their customers use the service.
Law enforcement officials both in the United States and abroad say stresser services enable illegal activity, and they’ve recently begun arresting both owners and users of these services.
In December 2016, federal investigators in the U.S. and Europe arrested nearly three-dozen people suspected of patronizing stresser services (also known as “booter” services).#That crackdown was billed as part of an effort by authorities to weaken demand for these services, and to impress upon customers that hiring someone to launch cyberattacks on your behalf can land you in jail.
