Infantry weapon development appears in several threads here, although the featured book concerns British infantry rifle development and procurement.

Not my subject, but I came across a podcast (7 mins) reviewing 'Weapon of Choice' by Dr Matthew Ford. The prologue says:
The process is examined through the lens of the series of new rifles adopted by the UK through the 20th century - the SMLE, No4 Enfield, SLR, SA80, and FN Minimi...... Ford presents his theses with a substantial level of detail and insight that I have not found elsewhere.Link:https://www.full30.com/video/b1d2108fa70f53d4bc5b4b6b8e747427

The Amazon link has no reviews:https://www.amazon.com/Weapon-Choice-Culture-Military-Innovation/dp/0190623861/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1499372735&sr=8-1&keywords=weapon+of+choice+ford&linkCode=sl1&tag=forgoweapo-20&linkId=4ce144e8ecdb0d930e02f710b6d35965

Added later. There is a recent SWJ article that may be relevant on a US weapon:http://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/the-complete-history-of-the-ar-15-rifle

Good book. Ian's review is spot on.
