Instead of meeting first with his Iraqi hosts, as protocol normally requires, upon entering Iraq on Thursday U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates proceeded directly to Camp Fallujah in Iraq’s Anbar province. After receiving a briefing from the American ground force commander in Anbar province, Mr. Gates retreated to a conference room. There he held a council of war.

Joining Mr. Gates were:


General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff,
Admiral William Fallon, Commander, U.S. Central Command,
General David Petraeus, U.S. commander in Iraq,
Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, ground force commander in Iraq.

The council of war extended well into the evening.

We don’t know what these men discussed. We will guess that when the Secretary of Defense orders all of his top officers to the middle of the Iraqi desert and then locks them in a room well into the evening, some important topics were likely discussed...
