The Finnish Institute of International Affairs has launched a new publication on the Islamist oppositions and their relevance to EU policy-makers. The book, “Islamist Opposition Parties and the Potential for EU Engagement”

By now, it has become clear that the EU should start distinguishing between the different streams of Islamism, from the most extreme to politically moderate, and that it is in the foreign policy and security interests of the Union to formulate coherent policies towards these differing groups in the respective countries. The importance of engaging with moderate Islamists stems from the consequences which successful policies would have on the respective countries’ political systems. These are: preventing mainstream Islamist radicalisation, enhancing the pro-democracy opposition’s impact and decreasing government authoritarianism.
