Ok I have seen some stuff here about online schools, does anyone know anything about Walden? They have Ph.D. in Public Policy with a specialization in Homeland Security Policy and Coordination which I have been looking at http://www.waldenu.edu/c/Schools/Schools_9231.htm

Any thoughts, advice, etc.?

What do you intend to do with it? In the government, simply having an advanced degree is enough for career advancement. They don't care so much about where it was from. In academia, where your degree is from matters greatly. To be frank, it would be very, very difficult to get a college faculty position with a doctorate from Walden, at least at anything other than a junior college.

Along this note - I'm investigating the Security Studies school at Kansas State for my master's and possible follow on - what's the take on that one?

Which department administers that one? I have some experience with the K-State history department...though it's a bit dated (10 years).

It’s more something I want to do than something with a direct use. I work for the army (DA civilian) as an intelligence specialists and I don't see my self leaving that general line of things anytime soon.

It's apparently a new department started - however all the courses are primairly from international relations and political science, focused on defense/security issues. About half and half, as best as I can tell. Here's the link - they offer coop/DL with Ft. Leavenworth.

I recognize the majority of those names from the history department. The director was a Japanese history specialist when I was there...guess he moved up in the world!

One of the guys on there is an environmental historian...not sure what he's doing messing with security studies. Another is an authority on French history. Some are really strong...others not so much. If you get curious, PM me for some off the record opinions of a former student (very much YMMV).
