With a hat tip to Kent's Imperative (http://kentsimperative.blogspot.com), and with thanks to Google, here is an old volume that I would love to find in hard copy:

The Soldier's Pocket Book for Field Service, 1871 (http://books.google.com/books/pdf/The_soldier_s_pocket_book_for_field_serv.pdf?id=uV YBAAAAQAAJ&output=pdf&sig=2Es8zhRVX00_XeHS2C7agbB5-Eo)

The book was written by Sir Garnet J. Wolsely when he was a Colonel - an old Victorian soldier who is the source of one of my favorite military quotes:

Soldiers should be taught to despise those in civil life and to keep away from the softening influences of old men and respectable women.
