I have no background or experience in this subject, but am just wondering if this is coincidence or is there a bigger issue? Story is at:

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2008/05/02/223445/ukraine-sees-two-fatal-mil-mi-8-helicopter-crashes-in-a.html

Ukrainian government reaction is at:

I like the communications and transport minister's explanation of causes. He really narrows it down...

Today, in Ukraine, is an official day of mourning for the victims of the crashes and their families.

Hey Eric,
Flight Global found the crash and subsequent explosion on the Tavrida oil rig to be an accident with experienced pilots (10,000 flying hours each).

Kinda wondering what Minister Yosyp Vinsky means by 'external causes' seeing how the 2nd and 3rd conditions were weather and technical

Interfax reports the data recorder was recovered and being decoded as of the 29th.

But what of the other crash ?

IS a question. Has there been recent experience in the area of "faulty" instrument readings without being able to identify the cause afterwards.

Seems plausible to be accidents but the particular environments in which both took place seem slightly more than coincidental.

I would see "external causes" as being the action of an outside party or thing. If I hit your car with mine, and the engine quits running, than your car stopped running due to "external causes".

Thanks Drew !
My sarcastic side is showing again :D
I was wondering if the Ukrainian government was going to qualify "external causes" as Russian missile attacks or sabotage. I reckon a bird strike is unlikely :wry:

I think this incident and the helicopter incidents are linked.

2 dead, 8 injured in amusement park accident in Ukraine (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/10/europe/EU-GEN-Ukraine-Carousel-Deaths.php)

Of course, in this case, official permission means that you have to pay someone off to run your amusement park ride/business. local authorities should be required to personally inspect these rides...
