I am trying to write something both for a Professor and potentially for Cornell's joke of a foreign affairs journal about Peacekeeping - I know a little about South Africa-based Executive Outcomes in Sierra Leone, but I was wondering what other people might know about their employment as a substitute for multinational forces in peacekeeping scenarios - what I've read has usually painted a rosy picture of EO's time in Sierra Leone. Any of the old Africa Hands around here know anything?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Try the following:

http://www.iiss.org/publications/adelphi-papers/2006-adelphi-papers/ap-384-regulating-private-security-industry/ (maybe found in a good library?)

Adelphi Paper 316 Private Armies and Military Intervention, David Shearer (1998;maybe found in a good library?)

Try a Google search with: "kevin o'brien" + executive outcomes (He is a ex-RAND analyst who wrote on EO / PMC a few years ago).

If you want PMCs as a whole, rather than just EO, you might want to check out Tim Spicer's autobiography An Unorthodox Soldier (http://www.amazon.com/Unorthodox-Soldier-Peace-Sandline-Affair/dp/184018180X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217443630&sr=8-1).

He was the guy that ran Sandline, and was involved in a lot of business in Sierra Leone and west Africa. Fascinating book, even if a bit self-aggrandizing (but what autobiography isn't)
