Hello all,

I've decided to embark upon a project to build an online library of books, articles, videos, downloads, and links. Here's the link (http://sites.google.com/site/onlinemilitarylibrary/). I'm doing this because while there is a whole wealth of information on the internet regarding conflict, it is difficult to manage and organize the various sources. I intend to consolidate that information and knowledge into one location. The obvious caveats regarding classified and OPSEC material are noted. Suggestions and submissions are welcome.

Also, I'm looking for recommended reading lists (5-10 items) for the listed subjects in the main directory (http://sites.google.com/site/onlinemilitarylibrary/main-directory).

There's a section for blogs and forums also. I intend to consolidate every conceivable source. Thanks for your contribution.

As an aside, I would ask why build a new one? Why not start with SWJs and build from there?

In any case, look at CSI Press, CMH, and MHI.

Tom,

SWJ has an excellent selection. What I intend to do, however, is provide a centralized location where researchers and soldiers can come to easily find information on every aspect of war; history, leaders, theories, causes, videos, books, literature, documents, references, forums and blogs, and so on. Small wars are a part of that bigger project. So the user will be able to search by subject, region, author, and type of work. Courtesy of Worldcat, we can also connect users directly with the libraries holding the works they're searching for. Ambitious? Certainly. :)

Thanks for your contributions. Much appreciated.

ADDED NOTE: My motivation is the difficulty I had as an undergrad finding solid, comprehensive source material. I think too much time is lost searching for material that could be used to study it. I hope to facilitate the research process by easing the search.

Dear American Pride

Your 'online library' is full of copyright infringements, with monographs and book titles from Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Harvard Press, Routledge, Frank Cass, and many other publishers. I would ask politely that you remove all copyrighted material from your site.

I have instructed the AAP (USA) and the Publishers Association (UK) to follow up. If copyright material is not removed within a reasonable time, I shall instruct the ISP (Google) to remove the entire site.

How is it a copyright infringement to provide a link to a book available online, or to a search engine that finds the physical locations of books not available online? No books are sold or downloaded from the site. If it's illegal to provide links to where books and articles are already legally available (which is the all website does), I'd imagine nearly every website on the internet is in violation of some law or another.

The position is as you've surmised. This is laid out in US Law: the DMCA. Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

"The law is currently unsettled with regard to websites that contain links to infringing material; however, there have been a few lower-court decisions which have ruled against linking [...] links from websites whose sole purpose is to circumvent copyright protection by linking to copyrighted material.[4]" (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act, my emphasis)

I believe you probably weren't aware of the details, and that this isn't a case of wilful or malicious infringement, but it is infringement nonetheless. Your links point to websites (be they one-click hosting sites such as rapidshare or otherwise) which hold copyrighted material which has had the DRM hacked and removed. Hence my quoting of the text in bold above.

I will declare my interest: I am acting in the capacity of the rightsholders for some of the titles you have linked to. I am more than happy to provide you with links to Amazon Search Inside, Google Book Search, or our own Look Inside programmes so you can display the works with some preview ability. But I must insist that the entire works and all links to them are removed from your site.

I am happy to remove any links that link to a website that actively infringes copyright laws. Please be so kind as to identify which links and websites are iinfringing so that they may be removed, and that future infringements may be avoided.

majurey - AP is being quite helpful here. I'd recommend you be a bit more forthcoming by providing him the specific links you question. Moreover, and OBE though, I would have thought a PM or e-mail on this to him would have been the appropriate venue for this discussion.

SWJED -- I agree, AP is being very helpful, and I had already sent him the links by PM prior to your response, with a further offer of providing widgets for each of our titles so his site can continue to provide a preview of the books so his site visitors still benefit.

A PM from the start would have dealt with the listings issue. But I'm also aware that other forum members (bourbon, for example) hold copies of the infringed files on their own sites.

Example: bourbon's link points to: http://bourbonandlawndarts.googlepages.com/MI6andtheMachineryofSpying.pdf

A user with the name bourbon linking to infringed files on a domain with bourbonandlawndarts in the name leads me to a not unreasonable concern that this might be bourbon's own site.

Hence my decision to post once on the thread, rather than PM everyone who may or may not be hosting or linking to infringed content.

Well, I don't think you really got my point. This board does not exist as a shortcut in the conduct of your detective work. Got it? Deal with your problems offline - one to one - not publically on this site. That is the final word on this - no further discussion.

This is depressing me. A nice little group discussing freedom, tyranny, terror and countering terror and a copyright infringement guy shows up and starts throwing his weight around.

JMM99 and LawVol what are your opinions?

I go with SWJED's call - no further discussion. If you want, drop me a PM and we can emote more freely. :)

First off, LOL!
Second, thanks for reviving this thread - I lost my bookmark to AP's site.
Third, an additional idea would be to maintain a directory of RSS feeds, email lists, Twitter feeds, etc for organizations that focus on this subject matter (departments of various universities, think tanks, specific niche journalists, bloggers, freelancers, etc).

It's nice to know someone other than me as the site bookmarked. ;)

I plan on moving the site sometime in the near future to a better location that allows me to maintain it easier. Right now, it's simply too time-consuming to update regularly. I'm considering moving it to a wiki so that members of the community can also participate in maintaining the library, including providing reviews and recommendations.

Hi AP,

I plan on moving the site sometime in the near future to a better location that allows me to maintain it easier. Right now, it's simply too time-consuming to update regularly. I'm considering moving it to a wiki so that members of the community can also participate in maintaining the library, including providing reviews and recommendations.

You might want to think about moving it to a Wordpress instal - they are much easier for people to use than most of the wiki software.

Cheers,

Marc
