The New Challenges for Military Operations in the 21st Century: Emerald Express Insights and Observations from Operation Iraqi Freedom video DVD is now available for distribution.

This documentary video was produced as part of the annual Joint Urban Warrior (JUW) program and provides insights and observations from Emerald Express seminars in support of JUW 04, 05, and 06.

The video is divided into seven sections - Introduction, Winning the People, Strategic Compression, Filling the Gap, Becoming an Agile Force, Improving Civil-Military Unity of Effort, and Enhancing Coalition Operations. It runs 55 minutes, combines video, still images and interviews, and is professionally narrated and produced.

Distribution of this project is authorized to U.S. Government agencies and their contractors; lead representatives of multinational participants in the Joint Urban Warrior and Emerald Express programs; and for administrative and operational use. To request a copy, please send an email to wargaming@usmc.mil. Please include organization name, organization mailing address, phone number, and point of contact in your request.

The Joint Urban Warrior Program is cosponsored by the US Marine Corps and US Joint Forces Command and is designed to address and improve joint and combined urban operations concept development and experimentation. It is a recurring program consisting of an annual series of events. The JUW 04 and 05 programs consisted of a major war game and associated workshops, seminars, and planning events. JUW 06 built off the 04 and 05 programs as well as service, joint, multinational, and interagency lessons learned to further address critical issues associated with urban operations and small wars. JUW involves service, joint, combined, and interagency participation throughout its annual series of events.

The Emerald Express program gathers insights and observations from acutal operations for use by appropriate organizations and individuals. The program was molded after the Exercise Emerald Express conducted by the Commanding General, 1 Marine Expeditionary Force, in 1995. That event was the first of several large-scale interagency exercises that addressed operations from comprehensive military and civilian perspectives. Past Emerald Express seminars have reviewed operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia, Turkey, East Timor/Indonesia, Hurricane Katrina, and tsunami relief in South and Southeast Asia. Emerald Express has also been a key component of the Small Wars Center of Excellence.

If you are in an official capacity and a student of Small Wars - go to the MCWL site and request this DVD. Yea, I was involved in producing it - but it is very good and lays out what we are and will be facing for the quite foreseeable future...
