kelly,

Moved this post to the RFI arena. There have been discussions on this issue before. Have you searched SWC? There are several SWC members who watch Latin America and gangs - hopefully they can help.

Appreciate the help!! One of my friends who deals with missionaries in Latin America asked me about this, with my focus being Afghanistan I really dont know where to start.

Hi! My Google Alerts turned up a link to a question from sabers8th - name Kelly - asking for info on Latin American gangs. If you'd like to pass this along, I have a bibliography - more than 50 pages - on Gangs in Central America at http://www.box.net/shared/m267o3f1is

PJMunson on the 'What are you reading' thread posted this:
Looking for an academic, at least well researched and hopefully noted, book on the dynamics of gangs like MS13 and 18th Street and how they have spread across borders from LA to Mexico and Central America.

I have advised him on that thread that I think the answer lies on this thread.
