The shocking thing to me is that actually going to the tactical level and building a base of knowledge about local conditions and writing about in a systematic fashion is "innovative".

I'm more shocked by how little the people who allegedly "own" that very battlespace know about it, much less the decision-makers in Kabul, each time I go somewhere on mission.
