Israel Confirms Arms Shipment Sent to Aid Abbas

JERUSALEM, Dec. 28 — After coordination with Israel and the United States, Egypt has sent a shipment of weapons and ammunition into the Gaza Strip to forces loyal to the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah, Israeli officials said today.

Senior Palestinian officials denied the report, including the spokesman for Mr. Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, calling the story “Israeli propaganda aimed at aggravating the situation between Fatah and Hamas.”

But Israeli officials confirmed a report in the Haaretz newspaper that the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, approved the shipment in his meeting Saturday evening with Mr. Abbas. Four trucks with some 2,000 automatic rifles, 20,000 ammo clips and some 2 million bullets passed from Egypt through the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza, they confirmed, and were handed to Mr. Abbas’s Presidential Guard at the Karni crossing.

I completely understand why Israel would support Abbas and Fatah against Hamas, but why publicize it like this? The next Hamas IO move will be to label Fatah and Abbas puppets of the Israelis and the US.

It's generally in Israel's interest to see the Palestinians as divided as possible, so perhaps this is a good move to weaken the PA in the mind of the Palestinian public while strengthening its security forces at the same time. A good Fatah-Hamas civil war will allow plenty more of this without undue pressure from the Americans or the international community.

I might add sampsonblinded.org is a notoriously poor source of information. It includes such gems (and I quote) as:
- Only Israel's cruelty can instill fear in poor Palestinian people
- Israel must use chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons
- Humane war is costly and ineffective
- Israel must abandon the pretense of humane war with Arabs
- Israel can use large Israel Defense Forces for conquests in the Middle East and Africa
- Force Arab disarmament and turn Arab states into Israeli protectorates
- Israel should conquer only militarily weak, economically viable Muslim states
- Israel may annex foreign land
..and so forth.

Yes. These guys are an embarrassment. Google has banned them from banners, and they represent the worst in bad ideas. I suspect they are mainly US and Russian Immigrants, who always seem to be more extreme than those born here.
