Peter Baker, NYT, provides a blow-by-blow chronology of Presedent Obama's process for decisions on the Afghan War.

Still reading it, but it sounds like the basics upon which much few history and a lot of later books will be written on.

There is a very good issue of the periodical 'Intelligence and National Security', on the (US) Presidents Daily Briefing; which touches upon the interaction between the briefing officers and the principal reader. Behind a pay wall. It is on my bookshelf if a citation is required.
