My horses aren't sure about the donkeys (3) that live across the street - especially when they bray! In fact, they aren't to sure of any long eared equines.
Seiously, if you want a donkey, think about adoption through the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) wild horse and burro adoption program. The site in Pauls Valley OK is close enough that we are planning a visit - thinking about a mustang.

HMMWV run out of gas? Donkeys to the rescue. A little less armor protection, but what it lacks in protection, it makes up for in stealth and less required maintenance.

Canadian Forces in Afghanistan will have another item added to their arsenal next summer — donkeys.
Donkey? Sounds like he's describing a student in Ranger School. In fact, he sounds like an RI - sees the student as non-human and always thinks that he can carry more ammo.Quote:
Maj. Charles Janzen, the Canadian soldier spearheading the donkey brigade idea, says the animals can survive with very little water and can carry a significant amount of weight — nearly 160 kilograms.
When the Gun truck won't do, go for the donkey.

I need to ask 1CD and 3d ACR why they have no Donkey Troop. I think they are missing out.

No sh*t, there we were.
In summer 2003 the Ministry of Oil in central Baghdad (guarded at the time by our HHC) was subjected to a donkey cart rocket launcher attack. Insurgents put the donkey in the field, triggered, and ran. The poor donkey didn't survive. The missiles went wild, but at least one hit the target.
We suggested a Donkey Defeat Organization with a multi-billion dollar budget to create electromagnetic and space based countermeasures. :wry:
If only they had listened ... we had some locals up the road get slotted by a DBIED in 2005 near Kandahar. Wasn't much left of ol' Eeyore after that either.Quote:

The huge explosion showered the soldier standing on “top cover” out of the Mastiff’s turret with donkey entrails and blood, and the sight was so gruesome that the rest of those in the vehicle thought he had been mortally wounded in the blast, south of Garmsir in southern Helmand province.

Schmedlap,
Done as requested and into the 'Military - Other' thread. If it attracts derision and more I shall say you paid me!

Bet the donkey knows it isn't supposed to be carrying the handler's pack in addition to its normal load and is protesting the only way it knows how.

Big Deuce is a Ft Sill institution. Our DS used to remind us that the jackass outranked us. Short round too.
While i was there SFC Big Deuce was busted down to SGT because he kicked short round and killed him.
The Marines used donkeys to carry ECM's for dismounted patrol and it worked well.
With the exception of the baby blanket, this prime mover shows real promise and Yankee ingenuity - articulating front end and even has the wheels chocked when parked
My grandfather served with mules (mountain artillery). A fellow soldier on his last day of service approached "his" mule from behind and kicked it, shouting "This is the last time I have to see you, you bugger". The mule reacted and a well aimed kick shattered his skull.
Never underestimate the hoofs of a strong mule...

CAJ: The Kandahar Light Logistics Platoon
Quote:
Kandahar Province, in Afghanistan, is as diverse as it is beautiful. Its complex terrain ranges from rough mountains to lush vegetation to harsh desert. During my 10 month tour as the G4 for Task Force Kandahar I was amazed daily, not only by how the local population have adapted to this diverse terrain, but how it continued to challenge our ability to operate and support mechanized forces. Afghanistan is truly the ultimate test of our skills and abilities to adapt and overcome the unknown. Tasked with the responsibility for the conduct of logistics in the Province of Kandahar I was each day presented with unique situations requiring unique solutions. The creation of the Kandahar Light Logistics Platoon was undoubtedly the most creative and controversial solution throughout our tour. It certainly generated the most snickers.....

I can't believe no one posted this yet. When Canadian Forces started using donkeys in Afgh last year, they immediately dubbed the officer in charge of the animals ' The Assmaster.'

In President’s Square, the government dismantled a statue of Hafez al-Assad on June 10. The next day, residents recalled, a man nicknamed Gilamo put his donkey on the pedestal. Hundreds gathered, clapping, in mock displays of obsequiousness.
“Oh, youth of Damascus, we in Hama overthrew the regime,” residents recalled them chanting. “We removed Hafez, and we put a donkey in his place.”
Several residents said the security forces shot the donkey a few days later.

A Woman and a Donkey

A bit clich, but the almost caricatural image of this very typical westernized upper class Tehrani woman in the middle of the rural inland of Iran is somehow striking.
I met the odd couple on the path leading to Chak-Chak, one the most sacred Zoroastrian shrine (Zorostrianism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Zoroaster also known as Zarathustra, who lived in Persia around 1100 BC). The site is located on a mountain a couple of hours away from Yazd, in the middle of a rocky
I know this donkey that lives with 11 horses in a small herd. She keeps to herself at the edge of the herd because she gets picked on. The remarkable thing about her is that if one of the horses is injured or sick and can't keep up with the herd, this donkey will stay by it and, it looks to me, guard it. Then when the horse is recovered it will rejoin the herd and the donkey will be on her own again.
If animals can be saints this donkey qualifies.
From what I’ve seen I would agree. :)
