Russian AF in a rather strong airborne nuclear strike formation is now over the Baltic Sea again.
Right now the Russian military has decided to "play chicken" nuclear wise with NATO over the Baltic since last Friday and yet still no comments from the Sec of State Kerry, the new SecDef, or just about anyone else in the White House. NATO's Breedlove is also strangely quiet.
Just hit social media:
Right now!
4xTu-95
2xTu-22
2xTu-134
over the Baltic Sea. More on the way out from the Gulf of Finland.
#What the hell is going on? Is Russian Air Force on exercise or actual live mission? Several days "playing chicken" with NATO QRA over Baltic
If Moscow's aim is to intimidate: NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission is not intimidated. But risk of accidental 'event' is high.
(NOTE: last week a Russian SU 34 almost crashed into a Norwegian F16 as per the video that was taken by the Norwegian pilot)

Folks that know are expressing a lot of surprise at even more Tu-22/Tu-95 (multiple) Russian bomber activity over the Baltic this evening.

A solid article on understanding the dynamics between Russia and the EU concerning the Ukraine and the direction the EU should take with Russia.
http://carnegieeurope.eu/2014/12/09/...th-russia/hw8b
For more than two decades, the main goal of the EU’s Russia policy was to help the country transform: from autocracy to democracy, from planned economy to market economy. The guiding vision was the “common European house”―the idea that Russia would gradually integrate into the structures that the EU had built over decades. The EU and its member states designed many bilateral and multilateral initiatives with Russia to create a whole web of relations. The bloc helped Russia become a member of the G8 group of leading economies, supported Moscow’s entry into the World Trade Organization, and set up a host of programs to foster Russia’s transformation. Russia was at the center of the EU’s activities in the region; other post-Soviet countries (besides the Baltic states) received considerably less attention.
This approach to the post-Soviet space has failed. Russia today is more autocratic internally and more aggressive toward its neighbors than at any time since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Official propaganda paints the West as an enemy and actively tries to undermine unity in the EU and coherence in the transatlantic alliance. Russia has attacked Ukraine and even annexed a part of its territory, in violation of the agreements that underpin today’s international order and to which Moscow has signed up. At the same time, many other post-Soviet states are still very weak, which provides Russia with opportunities to endanger stability. In light of this changed context, the EU should shift its focus from Russia to other Eastern European countries.
Understanding Russian Behavior
There are two schools of thought that seek to explain Russia’s behavior.
For one school, Russian aggression is a reaction to the refusal by the United States to treat Russia as an equal power and to grant it an exclusive sphere of influence. According to this school, Russia never really gave up its imperialist mind-set―the view that Russia has the right to control its neighborhood in a world that Moscow perceives as multipolar and dominated by a small number of great powers. Having consolidated internally, Russia is now trying to rebuild a kind of Soviet Union lite. For two decades, Russia has been pushed around by an aggressive West; now, the country is on its feet again and is pushing back.
According to the second school of thought, Russia’s attack on Ukraine is defensive: the desperate move of a kleptocratic regime facing an existential threat, trying to keep democracy away from Russia and to regain legitimacy by rallying the population around a nationalist cause. In this view, the nightmare scenario for Russian President Vladimir Putin would be a color revolution in Russia like the popular uprisings of the early 2000s. By actively undermining democratic forces in neighboring post-Soviet countries, the Kremlin is building a buffer zone against Western influence.
Finnish Air Force has a very artistic take on QRA photos.

In the just cited Finnish MoD public website, a necessary detail:One assumes these flights are in international airspace, although presumably encroach upon air defence identification zones (ADIZ), hence the NATO air policing response.Quote:
Most Russian packages have departed from bases within Russia's mainland and headed towards the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, to return via the same general routing.

Russian warplane did not cross into Estonian airspace - defense ministry
MOSCOW. Dec 10 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry's aircraft did not violate the airspace of the Republic of Estonia, a ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"On December 9 the Russian military aircraft was making a routine flight from the Kubinka airfield (Moscow region) to the Khrabrovo airfield (Kaliningrad region). The flight was carried out according to the established itinerary strictly in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace," the spokesperson said.
The Estonian Defence Forces' General Staff said on Wednesday that a Russian spy aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-20, had crossed into its airspace the night before.
Again it appears Russians are in an "altered state of reality" and it was their moves into the Crimea and sending Russian troops and heavy weapons into eastern that nudged NATO eastwards with men, equipment and exercises.

Appears France's Thales has been providing ITAR restricted equipment to Russian defense companies and the Chinese as well.
Thales's close ties to RUS military: avionics of Su-27, Ka-52 heli; MiG-AT aircraft ; Su-30 fighter; T-90 tanks; Superjet 100.
Thales should be ready for a big ITAR sanction and fine... that is going to hurt
US detected violations in transferring the restricted US space technology by Thales to China.

pic.twitter.com/AuUB3oqBPX
Thales (and others) uses a bunch of front companies for weapons/tech transfers, specially to certain customers.
Another proof that the EU Arms Export Control not functional.
Selling “ITAR-free” is a serious violation, US's Aeroflex fined, wondering why Thales isnt fined yet.
Ukrainian Rada is going to change the ATO term they currently use--anti terrorist operation title-- to formally the term war in the next day or so and then on top of it declare the non block status null and void---that will agitate the Russians again.
