Easy for a tank crew to take over as a HMMWV crew. Much harder for them to go back to being a tank crew. Lots of "muscle memory" involved in getting a tank crew up to speed. Pretty sure its the same...
What I've heard was that MPs are getting "pooled" at higher levels. BCTs will either get a Co (or in some extreme cases a Bn) or none.
Gute:
Bad idea trying to train tank and Bradley crewmen to rotate between ABCTs and IBCTs. Tasks are too differnent between an M1/M2 and a armored HMMWV.
IMHO, 2X2 Infantry Bn also not a good...
Which is basically what is being done. The inactivation of BCTs is really a shell game. Each remaining BCT will get: a third maneuver Bn, a third Arty firing Btry, a second Eng Co and plus ups to CSS...
Asked/said another way....
Why a USMC AND a AC Army AND a Army NG AND a USAR?
Do we need and can we afford all four?
Really is the Army NG is not going to go away. 50 governers and the DC...
Been awhile but saw something I wanted to comment on...
Background 12 years of active-duty followed by 18 years of RC duty (all Army Reserve). Three years with an AC/AR Training Support Bn.

A while back, the US Army talked about restructuring its BCTs by adding in a third maneuver battalion. Anyone have any idea when/how that adjustment might be taking place?
My latest has the Army...
And how is the situation differen then the one in Europe with V Corps and 4 BCTs?
Me thinks its a response to some bad PR regarding/about Lewis Soldiers.
The Army announced today a new mission to meet requirements in Afghanistan. Four brigade combat teams (BCTs), one separate brigade and an Army command, each in a modified configuration, will deploy...
I pulled the briefings for: HBCT, IBCT, SBCT and BFSB.
Lots of discussion points around the two newst "buzzwords" Wide Area Security (WAS) and Combined Arms Maneuver (CAM). All formated allong the...
BFSBs are an out-growth of the transformation/modularization of the Army. In one respect, they are a combination of the "old" division Military Intell (MI) Bns and the Theater Intell Bde (TIB).
...
Pretty sure that in order to minimize the overall personnel increase, the size of HBCT Bns will drop from 4 to 3 companies. Overall increase of 8 to 9.
Adding a third Bn will also require...
Oh you Commonwealth guys :wry:
From what I've read, they will covert the existing Special Troops Bn Hqs toan Engineer Bn Hqs (Means an Engineer O5 CMD slot vice MP or Eng or Chem or Signal or MI). Pretty mush as wash for the 73...
Post Number 100!
Confirming what Gute said, the BEB (Brigade Engineer Battalion) will take the place of the existing BSTBs in HBCT/IBCTs and get added into SBCTs.
The "bill payers" will be EBA...
Thought I saw something earlier this week (Army Times?) that talked about adding a third maneuver battalion and an engineer battalion to each BCT.
Will be interesting to see if that happens and...
Dan Bolger (an Army BG now) wrote a book called, The Attack on Hunger Hill. Its about his battalion's rotation through the JRTC back in the 90s. He also wrote Dragon at War, back in the 80s. At that...
The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa
A very short but thought prevoking book along the lines of Defense of Duffers and Hill 781.
Set in COIN and centered around a US Army unit scout platoon with...
Today, the costs for AC versus RC for equipment are essentially the same as they both will generally have the same types and amounts of equipment.
It costs the same for training, both individual...
Some of this is not some much airframe number comparision versus numbers of advanced Air-to-Air weapons. Buy enough AMRAAMs and the number of F22 begins to become mote. Don't buy enough and the...
What I read stated that in addition to relieving the Bde Cdr, the Bde Command Sergeant Major was also removed....
me thinks there is more here that just a "bad" Commander.
Based on what I read today, the Army is being asked/tasked to cut 27,000 active-duty troops (plus 22,000 already programmed to go) by 2015.
Will be interesting to see where the cuts go.
If out...
Being on the outside, I've heard that there are training issues with the modular BCTs. Mostly revolve around low-density situations, FISTs/FOs in the maneuver Bns, Planning of fires across BCTs,...
Correct on the biggest cost is for personnel.
A bit about the Strykers.
1. They didn't really retain three battalions, they have always had three battalions.
2. They cut corners: No Bn...
