The impending cuts in defence spending seem to be even more far-reaching than had been imagined. As we report today, not only are top brass numbers being reduced and procurement programmes scrapped, but the jump training of the Parachute Regiment may be scaled back. Under one scenario, just 120 members of this famous fighting force will be required to leap into battle, which seems to defeat the object of having airborne units at all. It is claimed that a lack of RAF Hercules transport aircraft – another target for cuts – means there is little point in having such a large paratroop force.
