Default The Future Character of Conflict

The UK's 'Future Character of Conflict' paper can be accessed via the link: Defence Concepts & Doctrine Centre

The paper is mandated reading for all UK Army officers.

The paper briefly sets out the global and (UK) national strategic context for defence before analysing trends in the character of conflict (with 5 and 20 year snapshots) drawing deductions. It then concludes at looking at the implications for defence.

There are auxiliary papers dealing specifically with the Land, Air and Maritime environments.

It will be interesting with the announcement of the UK's Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) next week to see what coherence there is between the two...

Thanks Red Rat...looking forward to reading this!

I'm also on the hunt for the Australian Army's Adaptive Campaigning. I had a hard copy of it once upon a time, but can't seem to find it (a good sign I need to clean my office). If anyone knows where to find it, please post a link. Thanks!

Default Victory Among People: Lessons from COIN and Stabilising Fragile Stat

I suspect this book is a follow-on to Red rat's initial posting: 'Victory Among People: Lessons from Countering Insurgency and Stabilising Fragile States' edited by Greg Mills & David Richards:
Insurgency and instability continue to trouble a host of states worldwide. In Afghanistan, the effort to restore stable government is nearly a decade old; in Somalia, it is entering its third decade. So what must the international community do better to address conflict?

A unique new volume addresses the question that has plagued United Nations peace-builders and national militaries alike: how are threats to peace defeated in the midst or aftermath of war? Victory Among People provides lessons drawn from its comprehensive set of thematic and country case studies – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe – on counter-insurgency and stabilisation operations.

A taster is here, the preface and the first chapter by General Sir David Richards (now the UK's top military officer):http://www.rusi.org/downloads/assets...ple_sample.pdf

I plan to peruse a copy when next at RUSI (I am a member).
