The Strategic Corporal phenomenon reminds me of a war story I once heard. When I was stationed at Fort Ord in 1982 the mechanic who used to fix my car was an Englishman whose shop was in a shacky building about two blocks from Cannery Row in Monterey, California. Ed said he had been the flight engineer on the RAF crew that flew Winston Churchill to the Potsdam Conference in 1945. When the plane landed in Berlin Churchill tried to exit the plane with a lit cigar. The RAF airman standing on the tarmac at the foot of the stairs on the plane told the Prime Minister that he couldn't smoke around the aircraft. Several RAF officers started berating the airman for speaking to the PM like that. "Oh shut up," Churchill said. "He's got more ba*ls than all of you!"
