Several football fans were injured in central Moscow Saturday in clashes with Interior Ministry troops that broke out during a thousands-strong rally in memory of a Spartak Moscow supporter killed a week ago.

The incident, with its racist overtones, is likely to darken Moscow's image less than two weeks after Russia won the right to host the 2018 soccer World Cup.

Thousands of young men gathered at an unsanctioned rally on Manezh Square near the Kremlin around 7 a.m. EST in memory of Yegor Sviridov, 28, shot dead during a fight in northwest Moscow last Sunday night.

Russia: Studying Online Mobilization of the Manezh Riots

    Posted 15 December 2010

Recent riots on Manezhnaya Square next to the Kremlin showed that Russian soccer fans have become a powerful community who can mobilize thousands very quickly around an event. Last week, that event was the commemoration of Yegor Sviridov, a fan of the Moscow soccer club “Spartak” who was murdered in during a brawl among soccer fans on December 6. The memorial turned riot, and the crowd attacked people from North Caucasian and Central Asian republics, with many injured and one killed [RUS]. This was the third memorial for Sviridov, and all were characterized by their xenophobia and dissatisfaction with a system of justice that failed to prosecute Sviridov's killers.

sutki72, what is doing Kremlin sponsored youth activist there? Is this provocation (like most of their previous activities) or he just happen to be faschist, who is demanding that Caucasians and Centralasians must leave Moscow streets. Didn't new Moscow mayor demand something like this also?
