One thing that is not getting covered in the International papers is the oppositions CNRP's use of ethnic hatred. We are starting to see violence against Vietnamese businesses. This is from local paper the Cambodia Daily. Sorry it is paywalled. But you could try Google cache.

If CNRP don't get off the 1990's narrative Cambodia will keep an 1990's dictator. This is not a simple good guys exploited workers versus capitalist bought dictator bad guys. The problem with the CNRP leadership, especially Sam Rainsy and Khem Sokha is their racism towards the Vietnamese minority in Cambodia. This is being born out in their inability to win the police and military over to the side of the people as happened in Indonesia or East Germany. Their hatred filled conspiracy narrative that the security forces are actually Vietnamese soldiers has led to a situation where the security forces are more than willing to crack down like in Beijing at Tienanmen Square. In short you can't run a non-violent movement based on hatred. And the CNRP can't win unless they win over the police and army. I hope that the CNRP sit down and learn some lessons from this. They need to have a serious discussion about what to do with the Vietnamese minority in Cambodia. Hun Sen needs to go. But at the moment he seems to many expatriates living here to be like Tito. Keeping the lid on ethnic violence.

While not condoning the violence of the CPP let's not forget the Vietnamese minority. At least 5 Vietnamese business's were burned two nights ago. I expect more in the near future. It is easier to beat up your Vietnamese neighbors than to take on armed police. A good background on the issue. The California Law Review solution would be a good place to start. http://www.khmer440.com/k/2013/11/ha...a-nationalism/

Slightly off topic. It is still safe to come here for a holiday. Neither side is anti foreigner. Provided you don't look Vietnamese.
