Notorious Russian television host Dmitry Kiselyov, famous for his anti-Western rhetoric, has admitted to using a fake document during his weekly Vesti Nedeli news show.

During his show on the Rossia 1 television channel on April 24, Kiselyov displayed the ID of Ukrainian Roman Kolia, an officer in the Galician SS-Volunteer division. In a report on the modern-day relationship between Ukraine and the U.S., Kiselyov compared the U.S. to Nazi Germany, the Meduza news website reported.

In the following week's program, Kiselyov thanked the attentive audience for finding “inaccuracies” in the document and said it was fake.

“There are plenty of fakes now — from counterfeit paintings of brilliant artists to quotations falsely attributed to famous people. It is no wonder we fell for it,” he said.

Kiselyov did not apologize for misleading viewers, but used the situation to once again mention the fact that some Ukrainians fought alongside Nazi Germany and said he is thankful for “such artifacts, even if they are made in our time” for “reminding us about true history. “
    http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/n...ow/569657.html

This kind of behaviour is profitable.

Other leaks show that Kiselyov reportedly bought a $4.6-million home in central Moscow in 2014. Navalny has confirmed the purchase in a blog post, citing previously publicly available records, but added he did not know whether the other claims were real. Meanwhile, Shaltai-Boltai's website has been blocked in Russia.

    Default Russia Active Measures

Beyond Propaganda: Soviet Active Measures in Putin’s Russia

    https://connections-qj.org/article/b...-putins-russia

Note: you can open the entire article by selecting the pdf link below the title of the article.

Today, in Putin’s Russia, these active measures are once again in use, updated for digitally interconnected “global information space.” The paper begins with an introduction to active measures, then discusses their role in Soviet foreign policy and the attempts by the American “Active Measures Working Group” to counter them. The paper then describes how the Soviet active measures playbook has been updated for the modern era, using three case studies as examples. The paper concludes with a discussion on strategy, reproducing a number of recommendations from key publications.
It isn't too hard to discern how this information warfare tactic can be applied today to further fan the flames of hatred that are escalating on our streets.

Our KGB staff, using new typewriters and wearing gloves so as not to leave fingerprints, typed up hundreds of anonymous hate letters and sent them to dozens of African missions. The letters, purportedly from white supremacists as well as average Americans, were filled with virulent racist diatribes. The African diplomats publicized some of the letters as examples of the racism still rampant in America, and members of the American and foreign press corps quoted from them.

    — Oleg Kalugin, 1994
Overall a very insightful article, and in my view it points to the need for a new interagency Active Measures Working Group (U.S.). The mission of the AMWG was to identify and expose Soviet disinformation.

We should also relook NSDD-75 (discussed in the article, and in the next post), as a means to more effectively compete with Russia and other states that threaten our interests.

Default Nsdd 75 u.s. Relations with the ussr

    https://www.reaganlibrary.archives.g...DDS/NSDD75.pdf

    U.S. RELATIONS WITH THE USSR

U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union will consist of three
elements: external resistance to Soviet-imperialism; internal
    pressure on the USSR to weaken' the sources of Soviet imperialism;
and negotiations to eliminate, on the basis of strict reciprocity,
outstanding disagreements. Specifically, U.S. tasks are:
And the Washington Times article for context

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...ld-war-secret/

    Crucial Cold War secret

It was 25 years ago, on Jan. 17, 1983, that the blueprint for American victory in the Cold War was quietly formalized by President Ronald Reagan. It came with the roar of winter, by the name of NSDD-75, probably the most important foreign-policy document by the Reagan administration, institutionalizing the president’s intention to undermine the Soviet communist empire.
Another NSC colleague, Tom Reed, called it “the blueprint for the endgame” and “a confidential declaration of economic and political war.” The Soviets, who somehow learned about the highly classified directive, were even more dramatic. An article on NSDD-75 in the Soviet press was titled: “New directive… threatens history.”
The new policy, said Bill Clark, would “turn the Soviet Union inside itself,” encouraging “anti-totalitarian changes within the U.S.S.R.” America, said Mr. Clark, would “seek to weaken Moscow’s hold on its empire.”

    Why Putin hates Hillary

Behind the allegations of a Russian hack of the Democrats is the Kremlin leader’s fury at Clinton for challenging the fairness of Russian elections.

By Michael Crowley and Julia Ioffe
    | 7/26/16, 5:11 AM CET
    | Updated 7/26/16, 7:36 AM CET

When mass protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin erupted in Moscow in December 2011, Putin made clear who he thought was really behind them: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

With the protesters accusing Putin of having rigged recent elections, the Russian leader pointed an angry finger at Clinton, who had issued a statement sharply critical of the voting results. “She said they were dishonest and unfair,” Putin fumed in public remarks, saying that Clinton gave “a signal” to demonstrators working “with the support of the U.S. State Department” to undermine his power. “We need to safeguard ourselves from this interference in our internal affairs,” Putin declared.

Welcome To The Russian Game: It’s Embarrassing, It’s Dirty, And It Might Be Out Of Control

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.

    Jul. 25, 2016, at 11:00 p.m.

    Miriam Elder

Back in 2010, a series of sex tapes started hitting the internet in Russia. Several members of Russia’s anti-Putin intelligentsia were caught in various states of undress with a woman named Katya, and sometimes with each other, and sometimes with cocaine, and sometimes without. The show was repeated again this spring, when a former prime minister who is now prominent figure in Russia’s embattled opposition was caught in bed with another activist, the whole thing leaked for the world to see.

The tapes landed with a thud — sexual lasciviousness isn’t exactly a shocker in Russia — but left the subjects pretty embarrassed. “Imagine knowing that all those people, everyone you know, have seen this tape,” one of the men, prominent writer Victor Shenderovich, told journalist Julia Ioffe at the time.

This is what the Kremlin excels at — call it kompromat, or black PR, or information warfare. (The terms in Russian are many! It’s kind of like the “Inuit have dozens of words for snow” thing, but with the added bonus of being true.)

The DNC hack appears to be just the latest example — but the boldest Russia has tried in some time, if ever.

The sex tape campaign hit pretty low — Putin has worked hard to marginalize any opposition to him and the people it targeted were largely unknown to those outside of the urban web-savvy elite. Two years ago, the Kremlin aimed higher — leaking a phone call that featured Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland saying “#### the EU” in the midst of hand-wringing over the future of Ukraine. Did the leak turn the tides of the war there and forever damage the transatlantic relationship? No. Did it work to further chip away at goodwill in Europe towards the Obama administration? Without a doubt.

Now comes the hack of the DNC. I could spend the next few paragraphs detailing all the evidence pointing to Russia’s involvement — the investigation by security firm Crowdstrike, first revealed by the Washington Post; the Russian trails found in the hacker who claimed, the day following the story, to have actually carried out the attack; the fact that the personal email of a DNC staffer investigating Trump’s pro-Kremlin aide Paul Manafort was targeted; and even the fact that the emails were leaked via Wikileaks, whose founder had a TV show on Russian state television, criticized the Panama Papers for including Putin in their investigation, and took credit for delivering Ed Snowden to the Kremlin’s doorstep. But that’s all been done a million times over. The Russian thing to do would be to ask, Komu eto vygodno?, which means, Who does this benefit?, and the answer would probably be the same.

Yes, Putin wants Trump in power — wouldn’t you? An anti-internationalist who questions the use of NATO and wants to withdraw from the WTO while pushing for “deals” without thinking about pesky things like “rights” and “freedom.”

But why this hack, and why now?

Because there’s nothing Moscow plays better in than shame — degrading the worth of things by chipping away at them in ways that makes the world an uglier place.

In fact, the hack, published on Wikileaks — coincidentally, of course! — on the eve of the launch of the convention in Philadelphia probably achieved more than Russia could have ever dreamed — the resignation of chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, full domination of the news cycle, an FBI investigation. The Russians, in fact, seemed stunned. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, is known among reporters to always provide a quick turn of phrase even when he had nothing to say. This morning, he refused to comment on allegations of Russian involvement in the hack. State TV is hardly covering it at all.

Maybe the Russians got in over their heads with this one.

The content of the hacked emails — namely, party favoritism of Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders — is real and indeed embarrassing, but has been overtaken by what appears to be Russia’s attempted meddling in the US election. Now Russia is the story, and that may not have been part of the plan. But that’s what happens when you jump into an environment you don’t entirely control, with a media you don’t entirely control, which is why Russia wants Trump, who wants to control the media. You see where this is going?

One line keeps running through my head throughout this whole mess — and it applies to Bernie supporters as much as it applies to those who have been warning for years of Russia’s destructive policies both at home and abroad: Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.

More on the use of the Russian cyber warfare as part of their non linear warfare against the US........

    Reference the Russian DNC breach....

    https://www.threatconnect.com/guccif...s-lead-russia/

Guccifer 2.0: All Roads Lead to Russia

ThreatConnect follows Guccifer 2.0’s French breadcrumbs back to a Russian VPN Service

Read the full series of posts following the DNC Breach: “Rebooting Watergate: Tapping into the Democratic National Committee”, “Shiny Object? Guccifer 2.0 and the DNC Breach“, “What’s in a Name Server?“, and “Guccifer 2.0: the Man, the Myth, the Legend?“

In our initial Guccifer 2.0 analysis, ThreatConnect highlighted technical and non-technical inconsistencies in the purported DNC hacker’s story as well as a curious theme of French “connections” surrounding various Guccifer 2.0 interactions with the media. We called out these connections as they overlapped, albeit minimally, with FANCY BEAR infrastructure identified in CrowdStrike’s DNC report.

Now, after further investigation, we can confirm that Guccifer 2.0 is using the Russia-based Elite VPN service to communicate and leak documents directly with the media. We reached this conclusion by analyzing the infrastructure associated with an email exchange with Guccifer 2.0 shared with ThreatConnect by Vocativ’s Senior Privacy and Security reporter Kevin Collier. This discovery strengthens our ongoing assessment that Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian propaganda effort and not an independent actor.

    Continued........

    Conclusion:

ThreatConnect is the first to identify and detail analysis of Guccifer 2.0’s operational infrastructure. In our original hypothesis, we suspected Guccifer 2.0 might be leveraging French infrastructure to communicate with the global media, and we have validated this finding with the help of the media. As more details continue to surface surrounding Guccifer 2.0, we continue to identify heavy traces of Russian activity, from the specific Russian-based VPN service provider, domain registrants, and registrars as well as various discrete events that have circumstantial marks of Russian origins.

As we pointed out in our previous analysis, we conclude Guccifer 2.0 is an apparition created under a hasty Russian D&D campaign, which has clearly evolved into an Active Measures Campaign. Those who are operating under the Guccifer 2.0 Twitter, WordPress and Email communications are likely made up a cadre of non-technical politruk attempting to establish “Guccifer 2.0” as a static fixture on the world stage along the likes of Manning, Assange or Snowden. Their use of Russian VPN services with French infrastructure may shed light on a method Russian intelligence operatives use — domestic services coupled with foreign infrastructure — to help hide their hand and deter any potential attribution to Russia.

Guccifer 2.0 has subsequently claimed responsibility, both publicly and privately, for the 19,000+ DNC emails posted on Wikileaks on 22 July, and it appears that his persona is not fading in the run up to the election. The execution of Guccifer 2.0’s campaign thus far is rife with errors that have allowed us to attribute this persona to Russian-based infrastructure.

Maintaining a ruse of this nature within both the physical and virtual domains requires believable and verifiable events which do not contradict one another. That is not the case here. Our research into Guccifer 2.0’s infrastructure further solidifies our assessment that the persona is a Russia-controlled platform that can act as a censored hacktivist
. Moscow determines what Guccifer 2.0 shares and thus can attempt to selectively impact media coverage, and potentially the election, in a way that ultimately benefits their national objectives.

Just whether a new thread is needed for the apparent Russian impact on the forthcoming US elections is a moot point.
