The West seemingly assumed rather falsely that one could in fact negotiate with a Russian fascist intent on empire building and that the "rules of diplomacy" of the 19/20th centuries applied to the 21st century.

Putin has rewritten those rules and yet the West still thinks they will somehow work---now 13K Russian troops inside the Ukraine later, with 50K sitting directly on the border and literally hundreds of Russian heavy tanks, artillery, MLRSs and APC not to mention fuel and munitions being regularly supplied under the guise of "humanitarian relief supplies" the West is still attempting to come to terms with the apparent failure of "diplomacy ie soft power".

Now there is talk of supplying the UA with weapons and NOW we are getting the standard Russian threat thrown back at the West BUT Putin just keeps on supplying both troops and weapons on top of the Russian threats against Bosnia for supplying munitions to the Ukraine.

When will the West ie the US finally learn to stand up and state we are shipping weapons as you ship weapons and then release all intelligence data that has been collected to the UN GA, UNSC, OSCE, PACE and the EU Parliament and then let's see if Russia decides war is the way forward.

Meaning---We will stop shipping weapons when you stop shipping--we will provide military trainers until you pull out "your so called vacationers" and match move for move. That is in effect true leadership---all the talking the EU and US has done has achieved absolutely nothing.

With the current Russian ethno nationalism ie fascism driving their decision making processes only the true threat of "force" will get Putin's attention.

Myself and others have said this since the Crimea and nothing has changed that perspective--the West has greatly underestimated the impact of a Russian styled fascism on this current Russian leadership. It has in fact taken until this month to start even seeing articles in western media begin to discuss Russian fascism ie their "Holy War" with the West

Anything else is just an utter waste of everyone's time and at the same time displays the total lack of unity among Western leaders which in Moscow is being interpreted as a "sign of weakness".
Seems now the US fully understands the Putin Duma speech and his use of the term "New Russia" were not simply talking points---he wants now the annexation of eastern Ukraine as the manpower and financial cost is at a point he must show his people a full victory or lose his job.

Secondly, he badly needs the Odessa land corridor to make the Crimea a viable entity AND he needs to hobble the Ukraine by cutting off it's two harbors.

This was all there to see last June so I am not sure why it took the US NSC this long to "understand" Putin's geo political goals.

Might be only a bluff but the US can only bluff for so long before the cards need to be laid on the table.
