    Dmitry Tymchuk: Military update 4.15
    Posted on April 17, 2015

Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

    Operational data from Information Resistance:

The military activity of Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas continues increasing. Over the last 24 hours, the most heated area was the Pisky – Avdiivka stretch (including the Donetsk Airport and Opytne). During the day, the positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Pisky were shelled 7 times, including 4 fire attacks from 120-mm mortars.

Additionally, the advanced positions of Ukrainian troops in this area were attacked by a group of terrorists supported by 4 armored vehicles. As a result of the firefight, the enemy lost 2 motor vehicles and 1 armored combat vehicle (MT-LB). During the clash, the enemy supported their unit with two ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft units and several mounted grenade launchers (AGS-17 “Plamya” [Flame]), in an attempt to suppress the defensive fire of the Ukrainian unit.
    Right Sector leaving Pisky. Source
    “Right Sector” leaving Pisky. SOURCE

Shelling by Russian-terrorist troops was also observed in the vicinity of Opytne, Mayorske, Leninske, Troitske and Krymske (in 4 instances).

The insurgents are commonly using the following tactic in their attacks: a group of 10-15 insurgents (less frequently, 25-30), supported by 1-2 mortar details operating 120-mm or 82-mm mortars (sometimes also supported with 2-4 armored vehicles), makes a concealed approach to the advanced positions of Ukrainian troops to reach the effective range, and delivers a brief fire strike. In these “raids,” the terrorists, in addition to small arms, are armed with heavy machine guns and mounted grenade launchers, which they are using in an attempt to quickly create fire superiority and suppress the retaliatory actions of Ukrainian units, which are mounting a defense at the advanced positions. Less commonly, the attacks use 2-3 groups, one of which is always employed for cover or fire suppression of the enemy.

During the last 24 hours, we observed 27 transport vehicles moving through the ATO zone (including 9 vehicles moving individually). The supply traffic mainly follows the “northern” route (11 units) – past Debaltseve, from Luhansk and through Alchevsk, in the direction of Yenakijeve and Horlivka. Two more convoys drove towards Starobesheve (through Amvrosiivka) and Snizhne.

The following movements of personnel and combat equipment were observed:

    – 7 tanks (including 2 tanks repaired after battles in Debaltseve) arrived in Donetsk through Makiivka. The convoy was escorted by two BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles.

    – The insurgents are carrying out active construction work near Telmanove. 4 armored vehicles (three BMP-2 and one MT-LB) were transferred to this area.

    – Insurgent reinforcements arrived in the Kuibyshivskyi district of Donetsk. The unit includes 100-120 personnel, 5 tanks, 3 trucks, and 120-mm mortars.

If one takes the time to read phases one and two of the Russian UW doctrine of non linear warfare you will notice the extreme importance of "informational conflict" or what some of us call "weaponization of information".

Russia lies, cheats and steals if necessary to fulfill their geo political goals as that is "allowed" when using their doctrine all the while complaining the West is not influencing the Ukrainians enough and or actually responsible for what is happening in the Ukraine--"it ain't us" is their constant mantra and has been since Crimea.

    We have heard the countless "myths" spun since the crimea;

    1. NATO expansionism
    2. violating our perceived "sphere of influence"
    3. we were lied to during the 4+2 German agreements about no NATO bases in the east
    4. US supported and pushed a junta style takeover of the Ukraine
    5. the US is responsible because of it's previous actions in Libya, Serbia, Kosovo, Iraq, Syria and Yemen
    6. the US "wants" to keep us from being a great country-they are attempting to dictate to us as a vassal
    7. we were forced by US actions to physically take Crimea

And the list goes on for a couple of more points.

BUT then Putin himself yesterday basically blames the Soviet Union for the mistreatment of the eastern European countries and then this today:

U.S. military trainers in Ukraine may 'destabilize' situation: Kremlin http://reut.rs/1DcAN5s

    One could actually make the accusation that it is in fact Putin is the "destabilizing factor" ie;

    1. he defined his Putin Doctrine in his Duma speech after the Crimea annexation--I will defend all ethnic Russians regardless of where they reside PLUs he annexed Crimea

    2. Putin is driving a neo nationalistic form of Russian fascism that is built on expansionism--built on religion and hatred of anything non Russian and or neo liberal

    3. Putin supported a very corrupt Ukrainian President where the country is basically missing an unbelievable shortfall of 30B USDs that "disappeared on his watch"

    4. Putin "allowed" eight different Russian nationalist mercenary groups to cross into the Ukraine as paid mercenaries

    5. Putin has provided "vacationing and contract Russian soldiers" to fight in the Ukraine as well has new and modern heavy weapons, munitions and fuel almost on a daily basis and yet denies it all

    6. Importantly Putin is paying for all the Russian mercenaries AND stealing factory after factory and shipping them back to Russian along with Ukrainian coal.

    6. AND most importantly Putin is not implementing any of the Minsk 1 and 2 agreements yet complains it is the US that is "destabilizing" and the Ukrainians are not "fulfilling Minsk".

Strange is it not that the West continues to believe they can actually deal with him on any level???

Another Russian mercenary disinformation report or simply put another lie—even the Ukrainian ATO side has not reported that number and they tend to be in agreement with OSCE numbers.

Also just like their previous claim of over 300 wounded Ukrainian soldiers and over 80 vehicles damaged in the Pisky fighting.

Or like their claim of two journalists wounded this week at the Donetsk airport from a Ukrainian ATM –then it was one and then it was announced by western reporters in the area of the airport it was fake report by the DNR--- but after it made the Russian news agency cycle.

#DPR reports 46 ceasefire breaches by Ukrainian troops in past 24 hours

ATO headquarters: Plotnytskiy planning to flee to Russia

    17.04.2015 | 13:47

The leader of the Luhansk People’s Republic militant organization Ihor Plotnytskiy is planning to flee to Russia, Deputy Head of the Anti-Terrorist Operation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions Colonel Valentyn Fedychev said on Friday, according to the press service of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.

"Plotnytskiy is feverishly looking for ways to get indulgences, and salvation from the wrath of the deceived citizens of Luhansk," Fedychev said.

According to Fedychev, the separatist sees his only defense from this anger as being a "palisade" of Russian bayonets, and is even afraid of his own local fighters, according to Ukrainian online newspaper newsru.ua.

"Plotnytskiy is praying for each regular column of Russian weapons and military equipment, as well as Russian soldiers. He is afraid that someone or something could prevent it," Fedychev said.

According to the colonel, the leader has recently ordered the disarming of the militants at the Dolzhanskiy frontier point in order to establish his complete personal control of the point.

"Plotnytskiy has an urgent need to have his own ‘window’ to Russia. The time of his ‘regime’ in Luhansk region is inevitably expiring. He must be prepared to escape and export his stolen money," Fedychev said.

    Orthodox Terrorism

    by Mykhailo Cherenkov

    May 2015

Long before Russia’s annexation of Crimea and unproclaimed war in the Donbass, Ukraine had become a religious battleground. Despite the warning of Yurii Chernomorets, Cyril Hovorun, and other observers, none of the leading Ukrainian and Western politicians foresaw the threat posed by an increasingly aggressive form of Orthodox Christianity being promoted by Moscow. As events in Ukraine have now shown, Orthodox fundamentalism is no less aggressive than Islamic fundamentalism, and the “Russian Spring” is no less bloody than its Arab counterpart.

The facts speak for themselves: Greek Catholics and Kiev-patriarchate Ukrainian Orthodox churches have become de facto #il#legal entities in the annexed Crimea; in the Donbass region, an “Orthodox army” is active; dozens of Protestant #churches have been seized; there have been cases of kidnapping, torture, and killing of pastors; #Moscow-patriarchate priests openly bless terrorists and refuse to pray over deceased Ukrainian soldiers; Patriarch Kirill of Moscow predicts the downfall of Ukraine as a “kingdom divided against itself.”

Russia’s war against Ukraine has exacerbated a series of international, interethnic, and interconfessional conflicts. It is the religious aspect of the conflict that may prove to be the most significant, because Moscow Orthodoxy has been presented as the thing holding the “Russian world” together, and thereby as the main actor in the bloody Russian Spring.

Putin has justified the annexation of Crimea by saying that it has “sacred meaning for Russia, like the Temple Mount in Jerusalem for Jews and Muslims.” He calls it “the #spiritual source of the formation of the #multifaced but monolithic Russian nation. . . . It was on this spiritual soil that our ancestors first and forever recognized their nationhood.”

There is a nineteenth-century saying: “To be Russian is to be Orthodox.” This is becoming the main motive for the consolidation of “Russians” and the defense of the “Orthodox.” The Declaration of Russian Identity, passed at the end of the 2014 Global Russian National Assembly, asserts: “Claims that every Russian must acknowledge Orthodox Christianity as the basis of their national culture are both justified and fair. Rejection of this fact, and even worse, a search for a different religious basis for the national culture, testifies to a weakened Russian identity, to the point of its loss.” In short, Putin has reversed the old principle “Whose realm, his religion” (cuius regio, eius religio) that settled religious loyalties in post-Reformation Europe by allowing the ruler’s Protestant or Catholic commitment to define the religion of the realm. Now Putin seems to presume an expansionist principle: “Whose religion, his realm.”

“The conflict in Ukraine has a clear religious underpinning,” wrote Patriarch Kirill to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople in a letter published on the website of the Moscow patriarchate. “Uniates, and schismatics that have joined them, are trying to seize the upper hand over canonical Orthodoxy in Ukraine. . . . I ask Your Holiness to do all you can to raise your voice in defense of the Orthodox Christians in eastern Ukraine who, in a situation of increasing violence on the part of Greek Catholics and schismatics, live in daily fear.”

For the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, there are no other Orthodox churches—they are all impostors and schismatics. Additionally, the patriarch hides the well-known fact that even if one accepts the notion of “canonical territory,” Ukraine is on disputed canonical territory and belongs more rightly to the ecumenical patriarchate than to the Moscow patriarchate.

The identification of Orthodox faith with the Moscow patriarchate is becoming a mighty propaganda tool. The Orthodox militant Igor Druz, adviser to the minister of Defense of the Donetsk People’s Republic, remarked:

On the Ukrainian side there are no Orthodox at all, because not a single churched Orthodox individual would go to fight against New Russia, because they know that the unity of Holy Rus is pleasing to God. All saints who have spoken on this topic are unanimous in saying that Holy Rus must be united. Meanwhile Ukrainian fascists are the real separatists and they want to divide New Russia from Holy Rus and unite it to the decaying warmongering West. Therefore there are no church people on the Ukrainian side at all. Their battalions are made up mainly of uniates, schismatics, neo-pagans, and sectarians.

In July 2014, Metropolitan Onuphrius of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate addressed a personal letter to Ukrainian president Petro #Poroshenko, explaining that he was “forced to draw attention to the violation of the rights and freedoms of believers and interference in the work of the parish of the Donetsk diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ukrainian military in eastern Ukraine.”He did not mention the problems of other confessions or abuses by the occupying forces and terrorists. Thereby the UOC-MP confirmed not only its spiritual, but also its political dependence on Moscow. In a conflict between an Orthodox empire that swallows Ukraine and a nation, between imperial ideology and civil society, the “Ukrainian” Orthodox Church has chosen its side.

In one sense, it is no longer Russia as a country, but Russian Orthodoxy as a supranational movement, that is becoming a geopolitical factor. Claiming to defend “true” traditional canonical Orthodoxy, Orthodox leaders justify the actions of the “Orthodox army” in the Donbass region.

Through the efforts of Russian Spring ideologues, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, between Moscow Orthodoxy and Ukrainian “Uniates, schismatics, and sectarians,” is portrayed as part of a global conflict, represented as a contest between the “Russian world” and the “decaying West,” between “traditional values” and “gay Europe,” between salvific spirituality and #corrupting secularity.

Moreover, as the main unifying force for the New Russia, the Russian Orthodox Church today is trying to create an alliance with those Protestants, Jews, and Muslims who agree with the Orthodox view of Russian history and accept without a murmur their own subservient position. As the director of external communications for one of the Protestant denominations in Russia told me, “We Protestants understand that all the seats at the government table are taken, but we don’t object to feeding on crumbs that fall from the table.”

These allies of “true Orthodoxy” will soon become the next victims. Indeed, they already are. While Protestant leaders are participating in government councils and receiving presidential awards, their churches are being mercilessly persecuted.

The defense of “purity of faith” is being put forward in order to justify the horrors of the Russian Spring in Ukraine. Only the defense of mythical traditional values can cover up the imperial ambitions of Moscow Orthodoxy. Only a fanatical faith in the faith itself and in its own exclusivity could close its eyes to the commission by Orthodox crusaders of unmentionable crimes against humanity, against Ukraine and the world, against God and their neighbors.

Sooner or later the global community will have to acknowledge the fact of “political Orthodoxy” and the “Orthodox terrorism” connected to it, supported by Russia and destabilizing all of Eurasia. The sooner this happens, the better—for regional and global security, for defense of religious freedoms and civil rights, and for the self-determination of individuals and nations. One of the first steps in this direction should be the recognition that the “Orthodox” people’s republics that have formed in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk and Lugansk) are terrorist organizations. Such honesty would bring clarity to the situation and allow a nonpolitical and nonaggressive Orthodoxy to separate itself from the political and aggressive pretender to the Slavic world’s Christian inheritance.

Mykhailo Cherenkov, a Baptist theologian, is the former provost of Donetsk Christian University, which was seized by pro-Russian terrorists in 2014. He now is associate professor of philosophy at Ukrainian Catholic University.

There as been heavy fighting in a town close to the Ukrainian city Mariupol Shyrokyne which if taken by Russian forces would allow them immediate attack abilities into Mariupol. It was from this general direction and near Shyrokyne that the Russians launched a massive BM27 MRLS attack on the city that caused over 21 civilian deaths.

Russia failed to take #Shyrokyne with small arms and mortars so far, so they try the 'diplomatic' waynow. https://twitter.com/GorseFires/statu...14519214649344

*** Two days ago, Russian Col-Gen Lentsov demanded "demilitarization" of #Shyrokyne. Today, Ukrainian General Staff cave in to his demands.

OSCE wants all armed forces to retreat 5-8kms from #Shyrokyne = Ukraine must give up all buffer zone before Mariupol. pic.twitter.com/Xn8Fa47wFb
    pic.twitter.com/5k1W6s7CQb

#OSCE observers decide to stay in #Shyrokyne round the clock – Interfax

Suddenly #OSCE_SMM are DPR militia's "best friends" with promise to "monitor the situation day and night in the village #Shyrokyne"

Azov regiment said "the initiative to demilitarize Shirokino is extremely dangerous and irresponsible" http://ru.tsn.ua/ato/v-azove-ubezhde...ol-421099.html

#Shyrokyne or #Shirokino is key strategic point and firing position, from which Russian enemy regularly shelled #Mariupol city. #Azov

IF... Ukraine is so stupid to give in into this, will OSCE stop the Russian tanks when they come in #Shyrokyne? pic.twitter.com/N8giQtVQdj

Once all UA arms are gone, Russians can just walk in overnight and without a fight #Shyrokynehttps://twitter.com/OSCE_SMM/status/589031256618356736 … pic.twitter.com/kXWqlpGoLh

Then the Ukrainian response came concerning the demilitarization today.

Ukraine is ready to ensure the demilitarization of Shyrokyne, Donetsk region, on the condition of full observance of ceasefire for the duration of a set period of time, the press center for the Ukrainian military operation reported on April 17.

Notice---the Ukrainians after four so called ceasefires have learned the Russian game and demand a complete ceasefire ie absolutely not a single shelling, ground attack, small arms attack, tank shellings and or ATM firings
THEN they will demilitarize the town.

After the complete failure four times by Russia and her mercenaries to actually conduct a true ceasefire the Ukraine simply does not trust them any longer.

Then the Russian FM response came almost immediately after the Ukrainian statement.

#Lavrov: The ministers, including Mr Klimkin, who adopted the recommendation in Berlin, thought it would help reduce the risk of incidents

    MFA Russia ✔ @mfa_russia
#Lavrov: Lugansk and Donetsk have supported the idea. Unfortunately, Kiev has again advanced preconditions

Interestingly Russia FM equates "preconditions" to not wanting to be constantly shelled by Russian troops and her mercenaries.

A series of very astute social media comments by a well known journalist who is working the Ukrainian region.

Russian TV presents coherent single narrative in a way that democratic countries' media cannot. Need to think assymetrically

Putin may use baltics to test or humiliate NATO -- but biggest danger is misunderstanding. Putin is deluded, thinks west is attacking him

This is a core Putin geo political demand:
Russia likes idea of "new Yalta" (or "new Helsinki") to settle European security. Beware! @FOIresearch

Main explanation of more aggressive russian foreign policy is that west is dramatically weaker than in 1997-2004

This is the serious concern of the entire Baltic region--that Russian troops can actually overrun most of the Baltics in under four hours.
Big danger from Russia is snap attack creating fait accompli. But russia already stretched to limit by 15-20k troop commitment in Ukraine

Russia's army of bots & trolls is getting reinforcements: Moscow plans a special “information ops” military unit. https://meduza.io/en/news/2015/04/17...rces-in-crimea

Russia to set up ‘information forces’ in Crimea

    14:49, 17 April 2015 TASS

The Russian Ministry of Defense will set up a special “information operations” military unit in Crimea, according to a source from the Ministry who spoke to information agency TASS.

According to the source, the new unit will be assigned the task of “disrupting the work of the potential enemy’s information networks.” Work will begin in the fall of 2015.

The tasks of the special unit will include “disrupting the work of the potential enemy’s information networks and the subsequent disruption of the functioning of their system of troop command and control,” as well as “enforcement of cyber security in their own information networks.”

Already in the spring of 2014, it was reported that the Ministry of Defense had made plans to establish “information operation forces.” Reports at that time stated that the new division will work with securing Russian military command and communication systems.

In April 2015 Ukraine said it was recruiting an ‘iArmy’ to ‘fight back the Russian occupiers on the information front.’

Was the killing of two proRussians in the Ukraine recently actually Russian "false flag operations".

Why is it a possibility??? Putin was already talking about it in his Q&A telephone session --even before the news broke officially he was critiquing the Ukrainians for calling themselves "democratic".

Kyiv Alleges Journalist's Slaying Not Only Ordered, But Timed To The Minute

Oles Buzina was killed on April 16

    By Daisy Sindelar

    April 17, 2015

At 1:55 Moscow time on April 16, the Ukrainian National News agency posted a bulletin announcing that journalist Oles Buzina had been shot dead.

At 2:05, Ukrainian presidential adviser Anton Herashchenko confirmed the slaying on Facebook. And by 2:17, Russian President Vladimir Putin was already using Buzina's killing to attack Ukraine's "democratic" values during his annual call-in show with the Russian public.

"This isn't the first political killing we've seen. We've had an entire series of these kinds of killings in Ukraine," Putin said smoothly, responding to a moderator who interrupted the live television broadcast to announce Buzina's slaying. In all, just 23 minutes had passed from the first bulletin on Buzina's death in Kyiv to Putin's cursory condemnation in Moscow.

It's a turnaround some Ukrainian officials found remarkably rapid for a president who earlier this year took more than four days to comment publicly on the far more resonant assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov just outside the Kremlin walls.

Kyiv officials now allege that Buzina's killing was not only ordered at Russia's behest, but also purposefully timed to serve as seemingly impromptu anti-Ukrainian fodder for Putin's Q & A.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described Buzina's daytime slaying by two masked men on a central Kyiv street as a "deliberate provocation."

Herashchenko spoke more pointedly, describing Buzina as a "sacrificial victim" and noting that the call-in show's announcement about the journalist's death "was so carefully worded I got the impression they could have known about the tragedy in advance."

Later Herashchenko spoke even more bluntly, accusing Russia's special forces of carrying out Buzina's killing "to create an atmosphere of terror in Kyiv."

He added that the nearly simultaneous death of Oleh Kalashnikov -- a crony of ousted leader Viktor Yanukovych -- was an attempt to show that "opposition politicians are also supposedly killed in Ukraine, just as Nemtsov was killed in Russia."

    'Absurd' Allegations

Konstantin Dolgov, the human rights representative of Russia's Foreign Ministry, has hotly rejected any suggestion its own special forces were involved, calling Kyiv's accusations "absurd" and "blasphemous."

To be certain, Ukrainian officials have done little to resolve a recent string of suspicious deaths that have targeted, almost exclusively, allies of ousted leader Viktor Yanukovych and other pro-Russian figures.

Kalashnikov is the ninth member of Yanukovych's Party of Regions to die violently in the past three months. The majority of the deaths have been ruled suicides and the cases quietly closed.

The rash of unexplained deaths has prompted critics, including Russia, to accuse Poroshenko's government of tacitly approving the elimination of Yanukovych's clan. Pro-Kremlin observers have also accused the West of turning a blind eye to Ukraine's judicial negligence.

Officials from the OSCE and the European Union have urged an immediate investigation into the killings of Buzina and Kalashnikov. Arsen Avakov, Ukraine's interior minister, says the country's "best criminal search experts" have been put on the case.

Still, some incidents are likely to fuel Ukrainian theories that Buzina -- the former head of Segodnya newspaper and a vocal supporter of Russia's policy towards Ukraine -- had been fingered for a false-flag killing aimed at throwing suspicion on Kyiv officials.

Pravda Ukraine, a marginal online publication, ran an article prematurely announcing Buzina's killing on March 10 -- more than a month before the fact.

Russia's pro-Kremlin LifeNews website wrote on April 16 that Oleksandr Kofman, the "interior minister" of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, had warned Buzina -- a Donetsk native -- to flee the Ukrainian capital shortly before his death. And Ukraine's pro-Russian Opposition Bloc party today announced it had received a letter from an unknown nationalist group, the "Ukrainian Rebel Army," claiming responsibility for the recent killings.
