Russia’s state-run media agency RIA Novosti reported Saturday that the country’s navy scrambled Su-24 fighter jets when the American guided-missile destroyer USS Ross allegedly approached Russian territorial waters after departing port in Romania. It quoted an unnamed source as saying the ship’s crew was acting “provocatively and aggressively.”
According to the report, the ship changed course after detecting the aircraft.
US Naval truth
U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa denied that account in its statement, saying the ship was operating in international waters and never altered operations. The release said the ship observed the Su-24 aircraft in routine operations but did not interact with them and that ship crewmembers acted professionally.
Ross' Sailors observed that the SU 24 carried no weapons - wings were "clean."

Just a side comment--the Azov BN is an interesting development in the Ukraine--it began as a "volunteer unit" with limited weapons and little to no military experience or training and has developed into a rather elite fighting force which has been at the fore front of all the serious fighting and is feared by the Russian mercenaries--lately they have resisted massive shelling after shelling and have repealed ground attack after ground attack inflicting a high loss rate among Russian mercenaries.
In some ways it is copying the US Ranger concepts in their recruitment and recruit training and have an espirit de corp rivaled even by US military units.
A former Swedish elite sniper is behind their basic recruit training.
If we look at say the lack of fighting abilities by the US trained Iraq Army --that does not fight for flag and country--Azov fights for flag and country and that alone has made the difference.

Exactly one month after the arrest in Crimea was reported of an alleged member of the ‘Azov’ Battalion, the man remains unnamed, but the list of his supposed offences now includes an attack on a synagogue and on a mosque, as well as on the prosecutor’s office. Let’s hope the court learns his name since, according to Crimean Prosecutor Natalya Poklonskaya, this Mr ‘Azov fighter’ is facing a life sentence.
The Azov Battalion has received a great deal of attention and negative comment over the last year due to the pronounced neo-Nazi views of at least some of its leaders, and its use of an inverted Wolfsangel. This is presumably why it seems to have replaced ‘Right Sector’ as the target for dubious prosecutions in Crimea under Russian occupation. Poklonskaya announced on May 29, for example, that criminal proceedings had been brought against Stanislav Krasnov whom she called a member of the “punitive Azov battalion”. Krasnov is in fact the commander of the ‘Crimea’ battalion, and was on Maidan with Oleksandr Kostenko. The latter was recently sentenced by a Crimean court to 4 years imprisonment over an alleged and unproven injury to a Berkut officer in Kyiv before Russia invaded and annexed Crimea. Poklonskaya’s claim that Kostenko ‘confessed’ and gave testimony against Krasnov is almost certainly false.
None of these inaccuracies make the claims regarding the person allegedly arrested on May 1 any more credible. The Azov Battalion immediately denied that any of its fighters had been detained in Crimea. It added that it does not fight civilians, nor does it have any branches or units in Crimea.
This would surely have been the moment for the Prosecutor or Russian Centre for Countering Extremism to produce evidence and, at very least, name the man. Instead only further accusations have been made and the assertion that a life sentence is envisaged.
Tragically, it seems likely that some individual is being held incommunicado and under the total control of ‘investigators’ whose task will be to extract ‘confessions’.
The man was initially accused of an arson attack on a Simferopol mosque on June 13 and an attempted terrorist attack on the prosecutor’s office in August 2014 when a bag with explosives was found outside the building.
Then on May 19, the deputy prime minister of the de facto government Ruslan Balbek claimed that this same unnamed individual had been planning provocation around the anniversary of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar People on May 18. Balbek said then that the arrested man “has already confessed that he came here to organize provocation around May 18 in order to arouse a wave of disgruntlement among Crimean Tatars so that the world community received a ‘picture’ of how the Crimean Tatar people are suffering here.”
Mr ‘Azov fighter’, according to the Crimean prosecutor and Centre for Fighting Extremism, certainly gets around. As well as finding time to fight in eastern Ukraine, and on top of charges linked with June and August 2014, and May 2015, he now appears to be accused of desecrating the Simferopol synagogue back in February 2014, the day after Russian soldiers seized control.
Anatoly Gendin, head of the Crimean Association of Jewish Communities and Organizations has been informed that the Crimean prosecutor has appealed against the termination of the criminal investigation into the desecration of the Ner Tamid Synagogue and sent it for additional investigation. Gendin was told that a 20-year-old, arrested a month ago, is now suspected of the offence. Although he has also not been told the man’s name, the same person is allegedly an Azov fighter and is suspected of the above-mentioned arson attack and alleged terrorist plan. Vyacheslav Likhachev, researcher and long-time monitor of xenophobia and anti-Semitism, notes drily that the man would seem to have first desecrated the synagogue, set fire to the mosque and attempted a terrorist attack before, at the earliest in August last year, joining up with Azov and fighting, in order to then arrive back in Spring to await arrest.
The Ner Tamid Synagogue was desecrated during the early hours of Feb 28, with the words ‘death to Jews’ (an offensive word is used) daubed in red paint on the door, as well as a swastika and a wolf’s hook. Likhachev notes that the image of the Wolfsangel was the mirror image of that used by Ukrainian nationalists such as those in the Azov battalion (who say that it represents ‘I’ and ‘N’ - Idea of the Nation). He points out that the anti-Semitic vandalism was actively used to discredit ‘Ukrainian nationalists’ with the term used to describe anybody asserted Ukrainian territorial integrity and therefore opposing Russia’s invasion and annexation of Crimea. In fact, however, the synagogue was desecrated within 24 hours of the seizure of control by Russian soldiers, at a time when to his knowledge, there were no organized Ukrainian radical nationalists active in Simferopol.
The attack on the Chukurcha-Dzhami Mosque, when three Molotov cocktails were thrown at the building was recorded by a surveillance camera. The same assailant was probably responsible for a swastika daubed on the fence nearby, with the date 13.06.2014 and letters NS/WP (the letters for national socialism, white power).
Worth noting that there have been a number of attacks on mosques over the last year, as well as cases of desecration of Crimean Tatar monuments. There is no evidence at all of the authorities trying to either stop them or properly investigate.
Likhachev is surely correct in pointing out the clear parallel to the situation last year when four opponents of Russia’s annexation were arrested and charged with a ‘Right Sector terrorist plot’. They included renowned film director Oleg Sentsov and left-wing civic activist Oleksandr Kolchenko who both asserted they were tortured to force ‘confessions’. Unlike the other two men – Gennady Afanasyev and Oleksy Chirniy – Sentsov and Kolchenko have continued to deny the charges and are now facing sentences of up to 20 years imprisonment.
There are serious grounds for fearing that a young man is being held in custody and being tortured into ‘confessing’ to various anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim offences in order to come up with a show trial, with ‘Ukrainian nationalists’ and especially the Azov battalion as the alleged villains.

NATO: Countering Strategic Maskirovka

What must NATO do to counter President Putin? Maskirovka is the traditional Russian use of military deception and Russia's seizure of Ukraine-Crimea and incursion into eastern Ukraine is just the beginning of a new multi-dimensional Russian challenge to NATO and the West. Moscow has established a new level of ambition – strategic Maskirovka – by which disinformation is applied against all levels of NATO's command chain and wider public opinion to keep the West politically and militarily off-balance.
First, NATO's strongest military powers must demonstrate the will and the capacity to meet the Russian challenge. Second, NATO, an alliance of democracies, must re-establish itself at the core of a world-wide web of secure, mutually-reinforcing democracies anchored on the United States. Third, defence expenditure of all the NATO allies must move towards 2% GDP and quickly. Fourth, the Alliance must mean what it says. Strategic unity of effort and purpose is key to deterring Russia. Fifth, Europeans must take the lead in efforts to convince President Putin that Russia has nothing to gain from such an aggressive strategy.
President Putin is an opportunist. He believes that the West is decadent and declining and that his use of strategic Maskirovka can keep the Allies sufficiently divided and politically offbalance to enable him to achieve his primary strategic objective: the creation of a new Russiancentric sphere of influence around Russia's borders and the ending of 'frozen conflicts' in Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Russia's favour. Putin also believes that whatever weapons systems NATO has at its disposal, Europeans are so weak and divided that little or no military action will ever be taken against him. Putin may be right and his gamble (for that is what it is) could pay off if the Alliance does not stand firm and act together....

NOTICE--bellingcat and Atlantic Council made a clear decision to release the analysis of the fake Russian MoD satellite photos in Russian.A well-known Russian blogger has debunked the so-called forensic analysis by British online investigative group Bellingcat of satellite photos of the downed MH17 flight released by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Russian blogger 'ntv' uncovered a number of obvious logical errors, exposing the incompetence of the amateur sleuths who accused the Russian Ministry of Defense of falsifying the imagery, based on irrelevant and insufficient evidence.
For example, in their eagerness to find a 'smoking gun', the investigators jumped at the revelation that the photos were digitally modified using Adobe Photoshop CS5 software.
The blogger however explains that the use of Adobe Photoshop CS5 software is the standard method for changing the size of the pictures and the ministry obviously used it for this very purpose and not, in fact, to modify the actual imagery.

The blogger went even further and uploaded a random photo from the Bellingcat website onto the website used by the group for analysis, only to find out that it had also been artfully edited in Adobe Photoshop.
The blogger also debunks the Error Level Analysis (ELA) of the imagery that Bellingcat claimed was so significant.
The ELA for Picture 4 shows five areas with significantly different error levels
ELA identifies areas within an image that are set to different compression levels. With JPEG images, the entire picture should be at roughly the same level. If a section of the image is at a significantly different error level, then it likely indicates a digital modification.

Bellingcat was started on 15th July 2014, funded by a Kickstarter campaign, just 2 days before the MH17 tragedy by British journalist and blogger Eliot Higgins, also known as Brown Moses.
In the blogger community he is well-known “for having, through incompetence or design, passed on, passed off, incorrect MH17 information”, according to The Truth Speaker website.
The blogger, the website claims, “has a long track record for selling his 'citizen journalist reports' to anyone willing to pay.”
Back in 2013, before the war in Donbass, Eliot was covering the war in Syria, despite either speaking the language, or ever having been there, as is the case with Ukraine/Donbass.
The website notes that he covered Syria, and covers Donbass as a ‘citizen blogger’, analyzing video evidence, despite admitting to having no expertise in the sphere: "before the Arab spring I knew no more about weapons than the average Xbox owner. I had no knowledge beyond what I’d learned from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rambo," Higgins apparently claimed.
At first the Russian propaganda machine did not respond to their analysis but when the Russian report made it back into Russia --THEN Russian counter propaganda kicked in.

Maybe the Russian MoD should have let dead cats lay----once the original sat photos are available wonder what the next defense will be.
The sat photos will cost 1200 USD and a crowd funding request went out to social media--response----
