Both of these Ukrainian cities are key in forming a "New Russia" and Russia was astounded they did not fall during the initial uprisings---seems to be they are making up for lost time.

Putin gave a press conference in the last two months where he slipped in an answer and seemed to imply that there were ethnic Russians as well in Kazakhstan which caused him to back pedal for about three days after the interview.
Seems now it is becoming a pattern---and yet many claim he is not wanting to reinstate the Soviet Empire.
Remember the stated Putin doctrine applies to all Russian speaking population regardless of size and in what country.

It seems that right now Russia ie Putin is working to two levels---one reality and one an altered state of reality.
On the altered state here is any interesting insight to their double standards.
The Duma basically Putin can formally invade the Ukraine if the US gives defensive weapons to the Ukraine BUT the Russians have already invaded and are already providing heavy weapons and mercenaries on top of their own troops. BUT the US cannot do the same thing.
