Shellings and ground attacks began early yesterday evening and have continued into the noon time frame today--some areas were hit over a period of several hours--it has been an amazing amount of artillery and mortars shells fired by Russian troops and her mercenaries over the last four weeks.

They are slowly working their way back up to the 150 tons per day ranges that were achieved in Feb 2015.

Ex-terrorist leader: “Referendum in Crimea was a farce”

    2015/01/24 • Russia

    Article by: Jaroslav Jay

Igor Girkin, ex-minister of defense of the so-called Donetsk Republic, who fled Donetsk in August of 2014, when Ukrainian forces began their suppression of terrorist forces, has now become a peculiar kind of self-whistle blower. Recently, sitting in a studio of the “Polit-Ring” debate TV show featured by something called NeuroMirTV, Girkin has openly described some of the schemes which were implemented during the illegal referendum in Crimea in the spring of 2014, which was later used as the excuse by Russia for the annexation of the peninsula.

As his opponent is passionately describing how Crimean outfits of the Ukrainian army and the police were, in his opinion, in all ways supporting of “people’s desire to reunite with Russia”, Girking quietly laughs, and retorts:

“Have you actually been to Crimea during the referendum? Well, I have. I have been there since February the 21th. What you are describing here is absolute rubbish. There were no policemen who supported our side at that time. The only law-enforcement subdivision that has joined our ranks back then was the Berkut.

The rest of the law-enforcement agencies remained under control of Ukrainian Ministry of Internal, and kept carrying out the MIA’s orders. Yes, sometimes they were sabotaging these orders, but all in all they were under Ukrainian control. I haven’t seen any support from official governmental representatives in Simferopol.

Our troops had to force the deputies into the Oblast Council hall so that these representatives would vote in favor of our initiatives. I know this because I have been at the time commandeering one of such militant teams and I’ve seen it all from the inside. We had absolutely no support from the people, not to mention the army. The Ukrainian army units remained loyal to Kyiv as they were. Furthermore, most of the army remained that way. The only thing that made what we have accomplished in Crimea possible was the presence of Russian army.”

Girkin’s militant façade is pretty much gone today, as if the ex-terrorist is trying to distance himself from responsibility for his crimes. His Cossack style wavy hair has become neatly trimmed; his camouflage is now replaced with cozy Mr. Rogers cardigan.

Though outspoken about the atrocities he caused, of which he seems to be nevertheless proud, an ex-rebel prefers to maintain somewhat neutral towards the war today, though bitter about, as he puts it, the lack of Russian support in the East of Ukraine.

Whether this is his way of agitating for further Russian invasion or simply a covert lie to avoid awkward questions about his rushed departure from Donetsk in the end of August 2014 is hard to tell. What is undeniable though is that Girking is not too keen about returning to his “rebellion” activities in Ukraine. Perhaps it is time for his comrades to follow their leader’s example. After all, he is still alive and in one piece.

Notice the French and the Germans want the Ukraine to basically give up the Crimea and eastern Ukraine without the Russian fulfilling a single point of the Minsk 2 agreement.

Seems that Hollande and Merkel appear to not have paid attention to the recent intelligence report handed to the US by the Ukrainians.

European media downplays the Kremlin’s role in Ukraine's war
US politicians do not know the actual scale of Russian aggression – Levus

Commenting on the six Russian commanders allegedly in charge of Kremlin-separatist forces that are mentioned in the report, Levus said some of them were active generals. Others are formally retired but de facto still report to Russia’s defense minister, since they have not been stripped of their military rank and are on standby for duty, he said.

There is also a Russian general supervising separatist troops who is not mentioned in the presentation published by Bloomberg – Alexander Lentsov, Levus said. Lentsov is a member of the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC), a group of Russian and Ukrainian officers that monitors the implementation of the Feb. 12 Minsk ceasefire deal.

Levus accused Lentsov of using the information on Ukrainian positions he obtained during meetings with Ukrainian generals to help Russian-separatist forces during the battle of Debaltseve in January and February. Lentsov was not available for comment.

“Oleksandr Razmaznin, a Ukrainian general and member of the JCCC, says that the JCCC binds the Ukrainian army hand and foot and transfers intelligence data to militants,” Levus said.

Outlining the “structure of Russian occupation,” Levus said the about 9,000 Russian regular troops in Donbas were separated into battalion-sized tactical units attached to several sectors.

These units consist entirely of Russian servicemen. During military action, they may change their uniforms and disguise themselves as separatists, Levus said.

Apart from Russian regular army troops, “each separatist brigade has a Russian instructor as its chief of staff, or a deputy commander who de facto makes all tactical decisions during military action,” he said.

In each separatist brigade, there is also a unit of Russian regular troops enforcing discipline and obedience to the Russian General Staff’s orders, Levus said. Such units are used to train separatists and purge their ranks of disloyal elements.

Levus compared such Russian units to the “barrier troops” used by the Soviet Union to shoot retreating soldiers during World War II, as well as to the Bolshevik commissars, who made sure troops toed the party line.

While separatist troops are used more often as “cannon fodder” on the frontline, Russian regular troops are mostly used for artillery support, the operation of armored vehicles and sabotage operations, Levus said.

The Russian army’s headquarters moves around the Donbas depending on the location of current hotspots, according to Levus. For instance, during the siege of Debaltseve, it was transferred to the north of Donetsk, he said.

Over the past two months, Russia has moved in a large amount of Russian intelligence equipment and more drones to Ukraine, which proves that it is gearing up for an expansion of the frontline, Levus said. He said he thought the next escalation might come this fall.

This is what is not being understood by both --no actually all three Obama, Hollande, Merkel--IF you cannot get a true ceasefire in place to stop all shooting THEN political solutions are simply a "façade" in order for them to "get back to business"--meaning economic business especially between Germany and Russia where right now a number of large German companies are breaking the sanctions while they still do business with Russia.

    Dimitry Tymchuk: Military update 7.10

Posted on July 11, 2015 by chervonaruta
    07.10.2015

Translated and edited by Voices of Ukraine

    Operational data from Information Resistance:

Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas continue shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, actively using “forbidden” weapons systems – cannon artillery (122- and 152-mm in caliber), reactive artillery (MLRS), armored vehicles, and 120-mm mortars.

During the past 24 hours, insurgents actively fired at the advanced positions of the ATO forces in the western direction using the “harassing mode” of warfare practically throughout the entire section from Mar’inka to Avdiivka and areas north of it (including Kirove and Shumy). Terrorists used small arms, AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers, 82- and 120-mm mortars, ZU-23-2 mobile anti-aircraft autocannons, SPG-9 mounted grenade launchers. Opytne, Avdiivka and Pisky were fired at the most (insurgents also used 122-mm artillery in these areas).

During the last 24 hours, insurgents repeatedly opened heavy fire on the advanced positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Berezove, Stepne, Yasne, and Novotroitske with 120-mm mortars. Also, terrorists actively shelled the positions of the ATO forces in these areas from the vicinity of Olenivka and Dokuchajevsk with 122-mm artillery. It is noted that the enemy is simultaneously increasing the strength and frequency of fire strike impact on the positions of ATO forces in these and neighboring areas.

Thus, in the vicinity of Hranitne, insurgents carried out a powerful fire strike from 122-mm MLRS BM-21 “Grad” (at least six MLRS units were used). Near Novohryhorivka, terrorists used 152-mm cannon artillery; several tanks carried out adjusted fire from regular 125-mm weapons from firing positions set up and camouflaged earlier in different locations in this area. The settlement of Olhynka and the positions of Ukrainian troops in the area were fired at from 120-mm mortars.

The concentration of a terrorist strike “brigade” – the size of three battalions with a significant number of armored vehicles (38 tanks alone) and artillery (24 units of cannon artillery, up to 12 MLRS systems) was observed along the Mospyne – Starobesheve – Komsomolske line. The transfer of weapons to this “brigade” continues. At the same time, three reinforced “mechanized infantry battalions” operate in the area south of Donetsk (on the Syhnalne – Telmanove stretch) (predominantly active along the Olenivka – Dokuchajevsk line and the vicinity of Hranitne) using artillery and armored vehicles.

Kyivskyi District of Donetsk, “Sarepta” neighborhood, after shelling. Source.

At the moment, it is difficult to say whether such a concentration of Russian-terrorist forces is [purely] symbolic and is used to mislead the ATO forces, or the enemy is in fact preparing for an attack to the south of Donetsk, in the direction of Volnovakha. In any case, analysts from the IR group indicate that the ATO forces must be ready for enemy activities in the following directions: the Telmanove – Volnovakha highway, the Donetsk – Mariupol highway, the area from Novomykhailivka to Chermalyk, Mykolayivka, and Hranitne – predominantly on the stretch south of Donetsk.

During the past 24 hours in the vicinity of the Svitlodarsk springboard (the Luhanske – Myronivskyi area), insurgents carried out active fire strikes from small arms, 82-mm mortars, and AGS-17. Terrorist provocations with infantry weapons continue in the area of Popasna, Katerynivka, Zolote, Novotoshkivske, Krymske, Shchastya, and Stanytsia Luhanska. In most instances, insurgents are employing the old tactics: under cover of mortar fire (or in advance, in secret) at a range of effective fire, 1–2 groups of insurgents advance, or rarely 2-3 groups (usually – up to 30, rarely up to 50 people), into the “vegetation” in the “neutral zone” where they equip the firing positions. They are followed by open fire (including sniper [fire]) onto the ATO forces’ advanced positions and strongholds. At the same time, infiltration attempts by enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups of the rear of the Ukrainian troops are observed under cover of these insurgent infantry groups. As a rule, after the ATO forces’ retaliatory fire, the enemy moves back to their starting line.

The movement of transport and military equipment convoys in both directions is being observed in the border areas, including the occupied territories (Sukhodilsk, Krasnodon, Sverdlovsk). In the last 24 hours, 12 armored vehicles and artillery moved through Sverdlovsk, three 2S9 “Nona-S” and four 122-mm 2S1 “Gvozdika” self-propelled howitzers, six BMD-2 IFVs were transferred to Donbas from the Russian Federation.
WHAT is extremely interesting was right after the shot down of MH17--IT was the German BND (their CIA) that attempted to actually drum beat the Russian mantra --it was the Ukrainians that shot down MH17 and then when their CIA was called out by social media open source analysts even the German CIA super quietly never said another word.

Obama, Hollande and Merkel all know this is a key point in Minsk 2 THAT has been fully violated by both Russia and her mercenaries---

Until there is a true ceasefire and a true exchange of POWs the Ukraine cannot and will not accede to Merkel's demands to move to a political solution.

REMEMBER it was both Hollande and Merkel that have been responsible to a large degree for this mess called Minsk 2--AND they fact that they blocked EU and NATO entrance for the Ukraine repeatedly since 2005.

NOTICE too that both have not said a single critique of Russia on this latest round of heavy shellings and ground attacks AND both said nothing about the attack on Debaltseve even when they knew the attacks were ongoing--not a single word then and now.

    Wonder why that is???

Appears the Russian FM still does not really know how to read and understand the NATO Founding Act which they themselves have violated a total of 21 times since Crimea.

Comment by the Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department on Poland’s statements concerning NATO building up its military presence in that country

    1381-10-07-2015

Some Polish officials have made statements as of late regarding their country intending to cling further to a policy enhancing the armed presence of NATO and some of its member states, particularly the United States. These officials also call for revising the allegedly outdated Russia-NATO Founding Act of 1997.

Importantly, these statements are made while NATO military activity near the Russian border has reached unprecedented scope, as it is. Building up military tensions on NATO’s so-called “Eastern flank” is a clear goal toward which Poland and some other NATO countries are working consistently. However triumphant their reporting of the developments might be, this activity undermines regional security instead of strengthening it, as we have stressed on a number of occasions.

The Russia-NATO Founding Act formalises NATO commitments preventing the “additional permanent stationing of substantial combat forces” on the territory of new bloc members. We regard calls to revise the act as revealing a desire to make irreversible the bellicose NATO policy toward Russia.

Such moves have tremendous destructive potential and threaten negative consequences to the entire existing security system in Europe.

Appears that Russia knows about the NATO Founding Act BUT absolutely nothing about the Minsk 2 Agreement they also signed and CLAIM to want to fulfill.

Can any SWJ commenter explain to me just why we have Congressmen that seem to be pro Russian and or pro Fasicst?

In Russia they call this group the "sixth column"--but they really mean liberals and or democrats--not fascists..

#Putin-fan Dana Rohrabacher will meet with the MP.
