Pro Russians not ceasing fire east of #Mariupol. Shelling ongoing this morning.

The Russians since 2014 have wanted to break through this area as it is the direct line into the port of Odessa which separatists had wanted to initially take over giving them a port but failed when the locals pushed them out of Odessa...

Taking Odessa cuts Ukraine off from the sea and makes it basically a land locked nation state dependent on Russia..and gives the Russians two things...1) a land corridor to Transnisteria and Crimea and provides for a secure eastern flank to Crimea....

During heavy breakthrough attempt attacks on Mariupol last night UAF returned heavy SAF and artillery fire to push back the Russian attackers....

Ukraine insists that Russian troop withdrawal come before local elections in rebel territory, despite pressure from France and Germany

ACTUALLY the Germans and French laid out in Minsk 2 a roadmap that foresaw the implementation of military/security measures before the political/election measures....

Russia has wanted to flip Minsk 2 and has been demanding political unilateral appeasement moves NOT even found in Minsk 2 and the US supports them....

Does not make sense as the winter fighting months are tough for any army.....while the ground is frozen for tank warfare...the environment makes it hard on the infantry...the traditional Russian choice would have been this last spring and summer...they actually did try to make a mini then major ground offensive BUT largely and badly failed and then went back to shelling's and ground attacks.....BECAUSE they could not find nor develop a breakthrough point as per Russian military doctrine....
