    Default Mugabe-style COIN: Gukurahundi

Gukurahundi is a Shona phrase and is often used to label the campaign by an independent Zimbabwe, led by Robert Mugabe, between 1983-1987 against rebels from the Ndebele in western Zimbabwe. A campaign where the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade killed between 8-20k and aroused eventually IRRC condemnation within and beyond Zimbabwe.

There is a new book on this period in Zimbabwe's early history, by Dr Stuart Doran, 'Kingdom, power, glory:Mugabe, Zanu and the quest for supremacy 1960-1987'.

From the South Africa-based publisher's website:
This groundbreaking book charts the development of an intense rivalry between two nationalist parties—Robert Mugabe’s Zanu and Joshua Nkomo’s Zapu—and reveals how Zanu’s victory in the elections of 1980 was followed by a carefully orchestrated five-year plan, driven by Mugabe, which sought to smash all forms of political opposition and impose a one-party state.
Doran shows not only what happened during Zimbabwe’s darkest chapter, but why—and why it still matters. In an expansive narrative saturated with new findings, he documents a culture of political intolerance in which domination and subjugation became the only options, and traces the rise of those who became (and, in many cases, remain) the key proponents of this supremacist ideology.

There are no Amazon entries for the book; nor on Google yet.

    Default Gukurahundi: the British role

A British academic historian, Hazel Cameron has published a 20 pg article in the journal 'The International History Review' (behind an expensive pay wall):http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/...2.2017.1309561

So I rely on this article by an independent Zimbabwean e-paper (not based in Zimbabwe IRRC) and sub-titled:
President Robert Mugabe not only got military support, but was actively aided by the British government to conceal to the world Gukurahundi atrocities soon after the country’s independence, a new report has revealed.

(Later) declassified information from United States diplomatic cables from that era is now providing new information on Gukurahundi.

Dr Stuart Doran cited in the first post has commented too:https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/arti...res-of-1983-4/

There is a useful Wiki on Gukurahundi too:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gukurahundi

Default Gukurahundi genocide 36 years later

This is the name of a new documentary, made in Zimbabwe; id'd in a BZS newletter. It is 73 min long and I have just started to watch. Earlier on there is a 5th Brigade member talking.

There are a number of new facts presented, leaving aside the brutality involved. At the start of the troubles the ZANU government, led by Prime Minister Mugabe, announced large weapons cache had been found on a farm linked to ZAPU; interviewees state these for the ANC's military wing to enable their campaign in South Africa. Mugabe due to politics could not admit the caches and the ANC's presence, so they were used to demonise ZAPU.

A number of the interviews are not in English and the sub-titles appear to be shorter than what they say.
