    Default Article search

    Guys,
Sorry to keep bugging you with requests, but there's an article that I read back in 2005, I believe, about a Marine CPT who likened determining relationships in Anbar to cliques in high school, and through his efforts to learn the local networks, ended up becoming an honorary sheik and met great success with his little piece of the pie. I've tried a zillion different Google searches, but have had no luck. Worst case, I'll search back through all the DoD EarlyBird editions I saved, but wanted to give it a shot to see if anyone recognizes who I am speaking of or the specific article. Thanks.

Default American Soldier Becomes Iraqi Sheik

Here's one link that could be helpful:

    And another:

    [Washington Times, August 1, 2005, Pg. 1]
Army Staff Sgt. Dale L. Horn is known as the American sheik by residents of the 37 towns and villages that he patrols. His ascension to that position came through dry humor and military’s need to clamp down on rocket attacks. Horn has also managed to funnel $136,000 worth of aid into the area he patrols. Part of that paid for clean water delivered to 30 villages during the broiling summer months.

Well, I found the article. It was in Anbar, although it was an Army CPT and not a Marine CPT. Also, he didn't become an honorary sheik, but did compare tribal relationships to high school. I guess I'm getting old, and not just on my PT test.
