Used Books - Military History

Looking for a couple of out of print but not ancient books on mechanized warfare and the British Army, anyone know any good used book sites or stores? Tried Abebooks and Amazon, neither had what I wanted.

For reading or purchase? For reading I'd suggest the Imperial War Museum (London), National Army Museum (London), RUSI (Whitehall) and the Tank Museum (Dorset). Regimental museums for armoured / cavalry units still exist, but no direct knowledge (although I have a book listing them somewhere).

I've been a happy customer of the (now on-line) shop, Articles of War, ever since the owner, Bob Ruman, had a small shop in the 1980s near the Skokie Swift terminus on the Chicago Transit Authority's elevated line.

If he doesn't have the antiquarian military history you want/need, he'll almost certainly know where to find it.

I can also recommend the Military Bookman, in mid-town Manhattan -- though it is quite a bit pricier, the shop does carry some amazing antiquarian military history. Find them on-line at

I founded Hailer Publishing to make sure that the great books of yesterday are available for today's readers at a reasonable price. Although, the emphasis will be on books about military history and strategy, I hope to expand my offerings to include unique books from a whole cross section of interests.

The genesis of Hailer Publishing was more than a decade ago when I was given a recommended reading list while in graduate school. Many of the books were long out of print and hard to find (this was before the ubiquity of the internet), and if I could find them they were too expensive for a struggling graduate student. The titles that have provided the continuing inspiration are A.J. Marder's five volume series: From Dreadnought to Scapa Flow. Considered by many to be the seminal work on the Royal Navy and its development up to, and subsequent activities in WWI (1904-1918 timeframe), it carried a hefty price tag of $1,200 used. Over a decade later (2004) I looked for the books on the internet, and they were still $1,200; Hailer Publishing was off and running.

Although I still am planning on having Marder's books as an offering, our inaugural title, Counterinsurgency Warfare, seemed much more timely, and hopefully it will provide some useful knowledge to those on the frontlines today.

Hailer Publishing is always looking for suggestions to add to our catalog, and we are also available to work with academics who would like to re-introduce the great titles to their classes.

As a side note, I've been able to build my mil hist library from Ebay over time - often getting $30+ books for less than $5 including book rate shipping.

You can even set up alerts for when a book you're looking for is listed.
