Default The Unsung Hero Donkey Thread

Let me be the first to contribute what the donkey goes through in the everyday life in a small wars environment.

My horses aren't sure about the donkeys (3) that live across the street - especially when they bray! In fact, they aren't to sure of any long eared equines.

Seiously, if you want a donkey, think about adoption through the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) wild horse and burro adoption program. The site in Pauls Valley OK is close enough that we are planning a visit - thinking about a mustang.

    Cheers

HMMWV run out of gas? Donkeys to the rescue. A little less armor protection, but what it lacks in protection, it makes up for in stealth and less required maintenance.

Canadian Forces in Afghanistan will have another item added to their arsenal next summer — donkeys.

Maj. Charles Janzen, the Canadian soldier spearheading the donkey brigade idea, says the animals can survive with very little water and can carry a significant amount of weight — nearly 160 kilograms.
Donkey? Sounds like he's describing a student in Ranger School. In fact, he sounds like an RI - sees the student as non-human and always thinks that he can carry more ammo.

When the Gun truck won't do, go for the donkey.

I need to ask 1CD and 3d ACR why they have no Donkey Troop. I think they are missing out.

People think we have a horse's head on our patch

I say its because we are stubborn as mules

and it takes a mule to maintain a horse troop

but it does make for a nifty picture!

I remember being there the day the original photo was taken. The horse detachment really works their butts off here. With the recent heat I feel bad for all the 4ID stuff they are having to go to.

    No sh*t, there we were.

In summer 2003 the Ministry of Oil in central Baghdad (guarded at the time by our HHC) was subjected to a donkey cart rocket launcher attack. Insurgents put the donkey in the field, triggered, and ran. The poor donkey didn't survive. The missiles went wild, but at least one hit the target.

We suggested a Donkey Defeat Organization with a multi-billion dollar budget to create electromagnetic and space based countermeasures.

If only they had listened ... we had some locals up the road get slotted by a DBIED in 2005 near Kandahar. Wasn't much left of ol' Eeyore after that either.

The huge explosion showered the soldier standing on “top cover” out of the Mastiff’s turret with donkey entrails and blood, and the sight was so gruesome that the rest of those in the vehicle thought he had been mortally wounded in the blast, south of Garmsir in southern Helmand province.
