    Default Hello

Hello to all. I am new to the SWJ and looking for a succinct article on Pashtunwali.

    Default A few pointers

This request appears irregularly and has been moved to the RFI thread. Taken a quick look and first from another old post:

    There are some first steps:

    1. Use the Advanced Search option, found on the RFI thread at the top
    2. the one word search option will find a dozen threads where the word appears
    3. I know there are some maps of the tribes and links to the Pashtun honour code, for example for maps: http://council.smallwarsjournal.com/...ead.php?t=6643 Post 7 and Pashtunwali: http://council.smallwarsjournal.com/...ead.php?t=4165

There's a starter and hopefully helpful.

In December 2006 The Economist published an article on the Pashtun code of honour, it is a good account, but is not available freely on their website.

Try this Canadian AF article, which took ages to download, hence later entry: http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/caj/doc...l10.3_09_e.pdf

    Default Hi John

You will find tons on refs to Pashto, Pashtuns and Pashtunwali (or the sh > kh dialect variation - with more variations in between the west and east).

For a hands-on application of Pashtunwali, you might want to look at Jim Gant's 45 page article which tells how to establish a secure tribal base point. See Chap. V.

That article has received some favorable responses here - run a search on Jim Gant.

MAJ Gant is looking at the village level, where my interests lie in local governance and the civil and criminal justice systems. We (coalition) are at the provincial level (at most), with some interest in the districts. At least, MG Flynn's "guidance" (this thread) cites "district" 34 times, but "village" 9 times. Gant cites "district" 8 times and "village" 50 times.

I speak of the present lack of capabilities in the political effort (the DIE in DIME) at the district and village level - especially in "Pashtunistan". The military effort is obviously down into the village level.

    Regards

    Mike
