    What does the average Afghan in the hot zone strive to gain day by day? Money? Maybe food? Water? Rubber? Metal? Wood? What?

    Anything and everything. If it isn't tied down, they will take it. "One mans trash is another mans treasure" concept.

    They are definitely big on scrap metal. They get good money for scrap metal there.

    If you are interested, do some research on Khyber Pass and the arms trade. You will see a lot of what types of resources are needed to fuel that machine also.
