Default Stay calm

Slap,

On such poor details I hesitate to be alarmed. If they have been assessed repeatedly before arrival and then taught a skill in the USA - to go AWOL into a 'land of milk and honey' should not come as a shock. If they had all come from one village which had been hit hard, e.g. drone strike then I would have some concerns. I expect they will end up as day labourers or haulage drivers, two occupations Afghans have preferred in the UK and Pakistan respectively.

That alone by itself doesn't bother me that much but we have had an incident at McDill AFB in Tampa,Fl. and now a lockdown at an Army post in New Jersey.
McDill confirmed that weapons were involved and then it fell off the news radar, still looking about New Jersey.

WRT the original post, I had a flashback:

Three Afghanis were arrested Wednesday at an international airport in India’s Kerala state for flying with forged Mexican passports. They had just arrived there from Kuwait, where officials examined the passports identifying them as “Antonio Lopez Juan,” “Javier Sanchez Alberto,” and “Atonio Lopez Ernesto,” and found that they didn’t understand any Spanish. Maybe they were also suspicious of these inept attempts to ape Spanish names*.
* One can only wonder if the writing in the passports looked like the bogus English proofmarks applied to Khyber Pass Martini-Henry rifles. Then again, the Baghdad Embassy issued a passport to our 6'3" Big-Bird Lookalike S6 with his sex listed as "F".

Default almost to the canada border...

Pretty standard fare on the civvie side. The US has this habit of trying to teach foreigners to love the US by bringing them stateside for education rather than by educating them in situ. Visa restrictions for these folks in the US and the conditions imposed on sponsors are pretty draconian. Quite a number pledge commitment to improving their nation to get a seat and then, once in the states, spend a lot of time looking for ways to avoid going home. A good way to do this is to head to Canada and claim refugee status.

Pretty easy really. Anybody who is a dog-washer (i.e. works with us infidels) is a legit target for the bad guys back in Afghanistan. The really good ones are the people who get invited to the States. So, the way it is set up precisely those who are most likely to qualify for refugee status and precisely those who are most competent are given the opportunity to go to the States. Canada isn't stupid. Greeting these folks with a bottle of Molson in one hand and a toque in the other is damn good immigration policy. I don't know of any case that has gone sideways...but I'm not in the position to know.

I used to be all 'how could you' about this till somebody pointed out that were I in their position I'd do just the same.

A loose network of Mexican-American women, some of whom may be illegal immigrants, have been responsible for helping numerous Afghan military deserters go AWOL from an Air Force Base in Texas, FoxNews.com has learned.

Many of the Afghans, with the women's assistance, have made their way to Canada; the whereabouts of others remain unknown. Some of the men have been schooled by the women in how to move around the U.S. without any documentation.

The Afghan deserters refer to the women as "BMWs" — Big Mexican Women
— and they often are the first step in the Afghans' journey from Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, to Canada, a diplomatic official told FoxNews.com. He requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly during an ongoing investigation by U.S. and international authorities into who helped the Afghans leave the Defense Language Institute’s English Language Center at Lackland.
