Slap,
On such poor details I hesitate to be alarmed. If they have been assessed repeatedly before arrival and then taught a skill in the USA - to go AWOL into a 'land of milk and honey' should not come as a shock. If they had all come from one village which had been hit hard, e.g. drone strike then I would have some concerns. I expect they will end up as day labourers or haulage drivers, two occupations Afghans have preferred in the UK and Pakistan respectively.

McDill confirmed that weapons were involved and then it fell off the news radar, still looking about New Jersey. |

Pretty standard fare on the civvie side. The US has this habit of trying to teach foreigners to love the US by bringing them stateside for education rather than by educating them in situ. Visa restrictions for these folks in the US and the conditions imposed on sponsors are pretty draconian. Quite a number pledge commitment to improving their nation to get a seat and then, once in the states, spend a lot of time looking for ways to avoid going home. A good way to do this is to head to Canada and claim refugee status.
Pretty easy really. Anybody who is a dog-washer (i.e. works with us infidels) is a legit target for the bad guys back in Afghanistan. The really good ones are the people who get invited to the States. So, the way it is set up precisely those who are most likely to qualify for refugee status and precisely those who are most competent are given the opportunity to go to the States. Canada isn't stupid. Greeting these folks with a bottle of Molson in one hand and a toque in the other is damn good immigration policy. I don't know of any case that has gone sideways...but I'm not in the position to know. I used to be all 'how could you' about this till somebody pointed out that were I in their position I'd do just the same. |
